Idk what's been going on at the Millington tops, but recently they're taking 45 minutes to get people their food in the drive through. Many people pulling out of the line due to this and they're having you pay and then wait another 20 minutes for your food. It's unacceptable. This wasn't just a one time thing. Terrible first experience. I've never heard anyone rave over Tops but I was really craving BBQ and they were the only place open on Sunday night so I figured I'd give them a try...despite the fact that it's a 20 minute drive for me. They had an easy online ordering process, and the wait was only 10-15 min. That's where the positive notes to this operation starts and ends...the online ordering *appeared to be* effective and smooth. I show up on time and when I gave my name to the order taker, she immediately lowered her head, walked to the back to yell "-my name-" is here, then left out the front door in a hurry. There were nervous glances between the staff until the "manager" came out and asked "where is he?" At which point she approached me to inform me that they were out of brisket and ribs. Let's pause for a few seconds for a quick review: A BBQ joint...in the city that is supposed to be the birthplace of southern-style BBQ...that is open for business...out of the two main BBQ meats they serve...and they are still taking orders for stuff they don't have. I will say that the manager did indeed apologize and started off semi-cordial about my situation. However, she offered no compensation for my time and did not offer to "make it right" in any way. In fact, her demeanor and tone turned defensive fairly quickly. She was not coming across as customer-friendly or accommodating in the least. Another brief pause for a somewhat lengthy and admittedly shameless disclaimer: I *absolutely* understand that people have bad days, weeks, months, even years. And I am acutely aware of the pressures and maddening potentials of working with and for the general public. That does not mean you shouldn't have a *minimal* baseline of cordiality throughout all interactions with customers that are willing to pay your bills with their money, as a representative of the company you put a uniform on for, and especially as a member of leadership in said company. I asked the manager to cancel my order, which she promptly did without attempting to keep my business. I have yet to check the account associated with the card I paid with, but hopefully that issue won't add yet another stake in the heart of my opinion of this place (I have the cancellation receipt if needed, of course). To the owners: I suggest that you should first create a solid quality assurance program (which is lacking in a major way, especially in the customer service arena) or fix the broken one if one actually exists; then I recommend that you fix the broken online ordering system to show only items that you can actually produce and provide to paying customers. read more

First off tops smells a lot better than it tastes. I'm pretty sure they just pump good bbq smell out to lure you in. Than being said, it's not bad, but for sure not great. Actually I really love their bbq sauce, but I don't feel like their bbq is a good example of Memphis bbq. They also have good fries. Some people rave about their burgers, but a bbq place serving 'good' burgers should be a red flag. I don't care for their burgers btw. If you're in a pinch, Tops will do. Ordered food, brisket with ries, Mac and Cheese. First they were put of brisket so I got pulled pork. Then they came and told me no Mac and cheese so I got more fries. Order came and they had the wrong bbq sauce on there. There was no sweet bbq sauce at the tables anything. My wife and I could not finish our pulled pork taste was bad. This is my second time coming here. Last time it was about 4 years and last night nothing changed. Tops apparently has been in business since 1952 and personally I don't see why it's so popular, besides it may only be the only BBQ place in this city. Last night I ordered their BBQ sampler which includes two rib bones, Beef Brisket and Shoulder. All three of them are extremely dry, but the Brisket was very tough and chewy. Of course, adding BBQ sauce definitely helps and considering this is a BBQ restaurant one would think they might receive a decent amount of BBQ sauce for something that costs almost $20 with tax. However, you are only given a small one ounce container of sauce. For comparison purposes one ounce of sauce is about one table spoon, maybe less. This was a Togo order. Overall their baked beans and coleslaw are pretty good. I just wouldn't recommend this place unless you are starving. The ribs are mostly fat. Today I went and got me some food I ordered a jumbo pork sandwich extra slaw n extra sauce well behold the sandwich was regular with nothing extra on it. It took them 30 minutes to prepare the food I should've known better! Never heard of this place until today. Clean looking inside and out. I choose the huge sampler it comes with ribs, pork, fries, and coleslaw. I grew up eating Tops BBQ. I just moved to Millington from Memphis and I can tell you of all the locations, this one is the best! It's as I remember it tasting when I was a kid. The Memphis locations are doing something different with the pork because it just doesn't have that smoky flavor and smell. So happy about this Millington location. read more

UPDATE!!!!!! Gave Tops a 1 star review with the below writeup. Finally came back to give it another shot and they fired the guy who was causing all the issues and the service and quality is back to well above 5 stars! Best burger in Town hands down! Have been coming here for lunch at least once a week for almost 2 years. There were a wonderful group of people who had worked here the whole time. Recently, a new group of workers showed up. Specifically a very large man with a spider tattoo on his neck. I have witnessed him wear the same pair of gloves while walking away from the grill and touching everything including receipt paper, the register, trash, dirty trays, and most disgusting himself who at the time was very sweaty. He would then go right back to over cooking burgers on the grill with the same pair of gloves on. This used to be one of the best places in Millington to eat. The burgers at tops are fantastic! It is always fresh and served like it should be. The burger experience will have you second guessing whether you want BBQ or a burger. The pulled pork BBQ is great, so much flavor. One of my favorite places in the Memphis area to get traditional style BBQ. Since the ownership changed a few years ago, the slaw and beans have both been changed and it is not a positive change. Just finished up a round of delicious Bar-B-Que from Tops, Millington location. We sat outside, 3 tables available with a smoking ashtray post available at the farthest table close to the shrubs/bushes in the covered patio area. We sat with our dog out there, the patio is very pet-friendly. The staff offered to bring some a treat; not sure if they have a water bowl for your pet, so bring a container/bowl or ask for the styrofoam mini-bowl to get your pet hydrated. We picked out the pulled pork sandwich combination, with drink and Krinkle Kut French fries. The sandwich was chock-full of smoky pork, and did not skimp on portions! A layer of coleslaw topped the sandwich, and enhanced the hefty round bun. The slaw did not run gloopy nor overpower; it was the perfect companion to the pulled-pork sandwich. Hot fries and a 1/2 iced tea/lemonade rounded out the lunch. Staff were great! One staffer came out to greet our dog, and struck up a friendly conversation.
