I've heard nothing but great things about this restaurant and I can't say I understand why. The interior is clean, spacious and seat yourself. The staff were efficient and pleasant. The food came out within a decent time during dinner hours. The food itself was just ok. The mac n cheese was so dry and not cheesy (to be fair, I'm a mac n cheese snob) even my husband said it was way too dry. The baked beans tasted like they came from a can and barely warm, and the coleslaw was your standard run of the mill coleslaw. The chicken was fried about 60 seconds too long. Although it was extremely fresh, the meat was on the tougher side of fried. It had a nice flavorful kick but I like fried chicken that has a crunchy crunch to it (does that make sense?). The skin was borderline rubbery. The chicken was impressive at first glance (you can check out the other pictures; I forgot to take more because I was upset, which I'll explain). It had an extra dark, almost burnt appearance, but it was fried in peanut oil, resulting in perfectly crispy and crunchy skin--just how I like it. The seasoning added a subtle touch of spiciness that tingled on my taste buds, and the meat inside was tender, exactly what you would expect from good chicken. However, I gave a low rating for the sides and customer service. The macaroni and cheese was a mediocre attempt at transforming boxed macaroni into something delicious; surprisingly, it ended up being the best-tasting side on my plate, though that's not saying much. The greens were disappointing, consisting of canned greens with that familiar canned flavor. They needed a lot of hot sauce and additional seasoning to be enjoyable. In my opinion, the baked beans were horrible. Not only were they cold, but I couldn't even finish the small portion we ordered -- and it was tiny to begin with -- so my entire family skipped them altogether. I made my purchase through Uber Eats, ordering $132.65 worth of food (free delivery), which included 20 pieces of chicken, large okra, large fries, extra-large macaroni and cheese, large baked beans, and large collard greens. Unfortunately, I did not receive the fries and okra. While I understand that the Uber driver bears some responsibility for the missing items, I also reached out to Gus's for help. I spoke with a polite gentleman, but the manager's response regarding the missing food was unsatisfactory and left a lasting impression that makes me unlikely to return. When I informed him about the missing items (totaling $20.20), he said there was nothing he could do except write down my name, allowing me to come in with my next order to claim my missing sides. But when I asked if I needed to provide my name, he simply responded, "Sure." I have a feeling they will not "recall" if I were to show up. I have a feeling it was never even wrote down. A business like this that generates significant revenue and customer base should care about its customer experience. This was my first order, and we spent a lot, but what we received in return was undeniably poor quality service. There's no way to determine if the driver received the food or kept it. I wish I could tell you about the okra (we really wanted that) and the fries, but my advice is to go for the chicken and pick it up yourself. read more

After receiving my notification to see the cashier in 3mins I waited 5mins to actually go up to the counter to allow them a little more time to have my order ready. 20mins later I waited for my order to be ready. Delighted to catch up with two of our Church Boys, who are now young men with families. Gus's was a convenient location and we knew the food would be good. As usual, the chicken was fried to perfection (crispy, juicy, spicy); and the sides (beans, slaw) were great accompaniments. I heard this restaurant was a good place to get good food from. So I decided to try the order of fried pickles with ranch sauce on the side, a small order of chicken tenders with fresh seasoned fries, a 8 piece of mix chicken, a small order of Mac & cheese and a small order of fresh seasoned fries. I never had fried pickles until now and they were good. They have a good flavor by themselves but when you dip in the ranch sauce it takes it to another level. The chicken was good as well with a little spice to it which gives it extra flavor along with it being hot fresh out the grease it's a winner. The Mac & cheese was not what I'm used to which oven baked, but it was ok to go with the rest of meal. The fries was fresh and nicely seasoned and not over cooked. Overall, pretty solid. A few things.... I could never own a restaurant in today's market. So, they get some grace. Wait staff don't seem to listen when you order. Mind you, the order has always been fixed, but I don't like to see a restaurant, have to eat the cost of a meal, because the order was entered wrong, Biggest point to make here, is I've been coming to various Memphis locations for the last 4 or 5 years. I so happen to stumble across this location and I am glad about it! lol! I ordered takeout, but I must say that they have an awesome dining room. It's really spacious and has tv's for those who wants to watch sports. They also have bottled drafts for those who wants a little booze with their chicken. It was super crowded the night I went in, so of course the line was long as well as the wait. However, for the amount of people I would say we were in and out in an adequate time. I forgot the chicken is cooked to order so if you're by yourself or don't order starters, your phone is your friend. My table was not clean but I keep sanitizer in my purse so I cleaned it. I should have read my previous review about the greens, I did not like them last visit either. My order was hot when I arrived and the young lady at the register was also nice. It was not busy, but I did see tables being cleaned as guests were leaving. Overall, the meal satisfied my hunger and I will return in the future. I tried this place on the advice of a friend last time I was in Memphis. It was ok but nothing over the top. I had it door dashed and it was about twenty minutes away from my hotel. Tonight I checked and saw there was one just five minutes away this time and decided to get it myself. What. A. Difference. Hands down the best fried chicken I've ever had. Again the food was amazing and we paid for our tab in cash and had the tip sitting on the table. I've only had this place bookmarked for several years... It was totally worth the wait. Because we were traveling with our dog, we didn't want to eat inside so we ordered the tender plate. They were incredibly hearty (honestly wish they would sell a 2 tender plate because 3 was too much). The spice is a nice layer without being overpowering.
