Not sure what the hype is all about. Tried this today based off the good reviews and won't be able to eat here again. Not fresh at all. Teriyaki salmon was not properly cooked. Had this delivered from uber eats and basic instructions were ignored. Luckily there are plenty of other sushi spots so no need to order from here again. read more

This is actually one of my favorite places in DC. I love sushi more than any food but it's impossible to get reasonably price good sushi in the city usually. Torai is amazing, the mango roll, sunset roll, and crazy roll. All were delicious, the service is always great they are very polite. They suggested a delicious Japanese beer last time I was here. I have enjoyed Torai's poke bowl but the last couple of times they were awful. The fish wasn't fresh and I had a total of 6 tiny fish pieces. The bowl looked nothing like the photo. It's mainly rice with wilted lettuce, some carrot, cucumber and seaweed. Very disappointing. With delivery and tip, I'll pass. read more

This place has probably the best and most reasonably priced sushi in DC! It's a cute small shop that is run by the nicest people. Their menu features Korean, Poki bowls, and ramen! This is a true hidden gem in the city. Shop is small but don't let that fool you. The people working there are lovely. It holds a very special place in my heart because this is the first place I ate at when I moved into DC 2 years ago. The ramen is amazing. You can tell it's made with love because the broth taste- healthy? Like fresh and has the absence of all that MSG and sodium. The poke bowls are always superiorly fresh. This spot had a ton of great reviews so I thought we'd check it out while we were in town. I'm not sure what people were ordering that was so fantastic but I wasn't very impressed. It was moderately priced, mediocre sushi. The bulgolgi bento box wasn't too bad and had a lot of food for the price. The building is definitely a hole in the wall which normally I would be fine with, but the water dispenser was filthy and spit a wad of mold into my glass when I filled it. It's tough to find a good reasonably-priced Asian restaurant in DC, so I was pleasantly surprised to stumble on this little place. I went here for lunch with my sister after seeing all of the good reviews on yelp and I'm so happy that I did. The restaurant itself is very cozy. One large table and counter space around the perimeter of the room make up the seating for the entire floor plan. You have to place an order with the cashier first and they'll bring your food out to you as it is prepared - every meal is made to order. Between my sister and I, we ordered a miso soup, the shrimp tempura appetizer, a crazy roll and the spicy poke bowl with two drinks for $35. Not a bad price for sushi in DC! Neither of us usually has a huge appetite but maybe we were expecting portion sizes to be a little smaller. However we both felt like there were generous portions of food. The chef even prepared extra dishes for us (a house salad and a tuna appetizer) on the house, presumably because it wasn't too busy when we went in. The fish was very fresh and all of the food was excellent. Hope to make it back to this place soon! read more

We shared a jumbo lunch special (9 pieces of sushi and a tuna roll) plus a Boston roll (shrimp, avocado, and cucumber). The Boston roll was ok, except for the strange texture of the shrimp -mealy, almost as if it had been frozen. The salmon, eel, and tuna pieces of sushi were very fresh and tasty. The rest of the fish didn't taste so fresh, and the texture was mealy, almost as if it had been frozen. The seaweed was strangely tough and hard to bite through, so I ended up peeling off the seaweed from both rolls. I wish I knew exactly what types of fish were in the assortment so I'd know which ones to avoid in future sushi meals. read more

I really like Torai. It's a casual mom and pop place with a good variety on their menu. I've tried their sushi, sashimi, ramen, dupbap, and bibimbap. I've liked everything I've tried so far. I recommend trying the ramen. I've dined in and ordered takeout, and I like how quickly your order comes out. It makes Torai an ideal workday lunch spot. Their lunch specials are great. Unpopular opinion: I prefer Torai to Sushi Hachi. The owners at Torai are warm and inviting whether you're a regular or not. I've dined it at Sushj Hachi three times, and each time has been an odd, awkward, or cold experience due to the service (bum-rushing all the food you ordered to the table at once, appetizers come out after sushi orders, sliding your card through the card reader attached to a giant iPad while standing next to your table and asking you to select a tip amount). I'd rather support an establishment like Torai. read more

I'm from Raleigh, NC visiting for the weekend but this easily became my favorite sushi spot simply because of their authentic food and service. The chefs are so wonderful - they greet you when you walk through the door and the cashier/server is such a sweet lady. I ordered the poke with salmon and it's one of the best poke I've ever tried, along with the salmon nigiri. My friend ordered the miso ramen and tuna nigiri and she said the broth was just perfect, not too bland or salty. She loved the vegetables and the pork that was in it. If you order nigiri, it comes with a little bit of wasabi between the rice and the fish. read more

At first I was a little sad that Cafe Kimchi was no more, but sushi is something I miss having on 8th Street, so I was excited to see they had it once I stepped inside. Its got all the staple east Asian dishes - ramen, sushi, a couple Korean dishes - in a rich menu thats not overwhelming, and the sushi is actually really good, and thats hard to come by in DC.
