My boss took me here for my first day of work. Great food and fast service made it great for a lunch stop during a busy day

Man, Torchy's taco game has really gone downhill. Ordered four build your own tacos this morning and all had potatoes in them. Potatoes were undercooked and super firm. Bacon chips seem to be old and were hard. One taco was mislabeled. Major disappointment with my order. Seems like the last 3-4 times I've had Torchy's it's been mediocre at best. My advice, slow your jets on the growth and focus on quality not quantity. read more

Tacos. Big expensive tacos. I was on the fence between 3 and 4 stars here. But, the taco I was disappointed with was the verde pork. The jerk chicken was quite good though. One of the big pluses of moving to Austin is the option to have Torchy's just about whenever I want. There wasn't an available restaurant within 10 minutes of me and that just seems to be a crime. I am a bit late to the Torchy's movement, but better late than never. I don't think there's much I can say that most of the other reviews haven't said before, but I will say that all the tacos I have enjoyed since coming to Torchy's for the first time plus the amazing queso have made me a lifelong fan. I recommend the Baja Shrimp Taco, The Democrat, and the Trailer Park. All three were excellent and I could eat them every day. Watch out for the Brush Fire if you aren't the biggest fan of spice; you can always ask for fewer jalapenos. My girlfriend, who loves all things spicy, was overwhelmed by the heat. The soda selection is also great because it's not your typical Coke, Dr. Pepper, etc. Overall, the entire experience is amazing! read more

Everyone who hasn't eaten here yet and doesn't understand the hype: I'm here to tell you that you are wrong. This place delivers in every way it provides. The tacos are not normal, they are all experimental and they are LARGE. The queso is unique and very flavorful, in fact it has ruined queso from a lot of other places for us. Their sauces are a huge highlight as well. The Diablo is as delicious as it is spicy (or moreso) and their various pepper-mixed ranches are absolutely amazing. Their Lil' Nookies are lightly deep-fried balls of cookie dough with some stuff added.... holy crap they're amazing (and I generally don't eat sweet stuff). The tacos that claim to be spicy, like the Brushfire and a lot of their monthly specials, do not screw around AT ALL. One of my favorite things about Torchy's though is how a lot of their tacos can serve as sort of a blank slate for adding whatever you want to to them. I know that sounds obvious but it almost feels like some were specifically designed that way. As for recommendations, at the top I have to say the Tipsy Chick. It has some delicious sweet corn on it, one of the spicier ranch sauces and comes with a sweet bacon bourbon mixture on the side that is awesome even on its own. Second I love the republican because they have REALLY good jalapeño sausage and it's one of those blank slate options: only has sausage, melted cheese and pico de gaillo (I recommend adding onions). The chicken and beef fajita tacos are great in general though not necessarily unique. And if you want pretty freaking spicy, try the Brushfire. There are also some seafood options but I don't eat seafood. Honestly though, if the description of the taco speaks to your soul, get it so it'll get a chance to speak to your stomach. read more

These are really tasty tacos (despite that they seem to use tortillas from a bag). BTW, there are several locations in town so look for the one closest to you. Now....whoever thought of FRYING an AVOCADO slice and putting it into a taco is a freakn' genius. Out of the four tacos I tried, that one was clearly the best (but the others were great too). Mr. Pink was fine (I don't know about seared tuna, more like cooked throughly), but it had little flavor. Trailer Park (Trashy) and The Democrat were good decisions and I would recommend trying them. Dessert though.... oh man... they have locally created brownies called Love Puppies that are incredibly moist and rich (BTW, you can order these online @ lovepuppiesbrownies.com). I had the Double Chocolate Chip. And they have fried chocolate chip cookies (which I didn't get to try, but definitely will the next time). Overall, a great place to get your taco fix on. read more

Best breakfast tacos I've ever had! Got the monk special and the jalapeño breakfast taco, both were huge and delicious. I'm originally from Phoenix where it is usually breakfast burritos instead of tacos, this is the first time I've NOT wished it was a burrito. read more

Disclaimer(s): (a) I am a taco snob; (b) I believe good tacos must being with fresh tortillas . Tried two tacos at Torchy's - the famous fried avocado and a grilled shrimp. Both were decent. The tortillas were not very good, and the cheese and lettuce clearly comes out of a large frozen bag. I had been hearing about Torchy's Tacos for a while, so I was expecting some sort of orgasmic, soul-changing experience. After finally going here, all I have to say is, "meh." As others have stated, Horrible Parking. Not so great drive-thru situation. I waited for a LONG time in the drive-thru as well. And yes, for tacos, Torchy's is expensive... When I get tacos, I usually get the same thing: two chicken fajita tacos, a side of chips and queso and a medium drink. This meal costs $15 at Torchys. Whereas my boyfriend and I go to Taco Cabana and EACH get two tacos, drink, and chips and queso for $12 TOTAL. So basically Torchy's is more than double the cost. However, the chips and queso are rather exceptional (the queso is super tastey and probably a meal in itself) and you get a lot of chips. The tacos are pretty good, but nothing special. I feel like I could make something similar at home with my own fresh ingredients. Nonetheless, there are some interesting concoctions on their menu and I will likely be back to try some of their other offerings. read more

Easterner here. What can I say? These tacos were hands-down far and away the best I've had anywhere! I recall having one taco with a habanero salsa. The other had a smoked brisket. The brisket was simply superb. The habanero salsa packed a punch but not as much as some other similar salsas that I've tried. If only Torchy's was on the East coast. They'd make a mint. I've heard about Torchy's for YEARS but never actually stopped in until yesterday. I would agree that they offer some tasty combinations, but all in all I felt the reality didn't live up to the hooplah. The guacamole left a lot to be desired in my opinion and some tacos were overly full while others were lacking substance. Tochy's gets 5 stars based purely on creativity! These are some crazy and unique tacos. I'm not a fan of guac, but their chips and guacamole is a fiesta in your mouth. :) Get it, fiesta, guac? Anyway... The Democrat is a good place to start if it's your first time visiting Torchy's, it seems to be the most popular taco there and possibly the most generally pleasing to one's palate. If you want a breakfast item, definitely go for the Dirty Sanchez. Who doesn't like to get a little frisky in the morning anyway? All of their tacos are deceptively filling. I can barely scarf down two, as hard as I try. If the location is busy, don't fret the line moves fairly quickly, but you may have trouble finding a place to sit. Finally tried Torchy's after being inspired by yelp reviewers. Really good tacos and great sauces. The Taco's are not amazing, but the SAUCES are very tasty and make the tacos taste great. And why not? Whenever you are presented with ranch and mayonnaise based sauces you are bound to love them. If you love avocados you must have the fried avocado taco and if you like Queso, I highly recommend it here, it different here: there is guacamole and some other sauces mixed in - MUST HAVE. Chips are okay. The atmosphere is ultra casual, order at the window, indoor seating is very limited. Parking is very limited but they have a drive thru! It's a great place to go for lunch. If you haven't been there you should go. read more

Don't even think you're going to park at this location. The food is good as is most torchys locations. I got 'the roscoe' which is a chicken and waffle taco with a fried egg and maple syrup on the side. It was delicious. Definitely do yourself a favor and get the black beans and a individual queso. So the taco's are unique and damn delicious. I would recommend this place to the most interesting man in the DOS XX commercial as he will slap his momma at how good the food is. The green chile pork tacos are really delicious here. But dang, this place is expensive, plus eating here brings on such a strong sense of embarrassment since it's so clearly by and for white folks. (Would Mexican-Americans pay over $4 for a single taco? Probably not.) I've never had breakfast tacos, but you can't be in Austin and not try them! My husband had the migas and I had the wrangler. We both really enjoyed them. The street corn was so flavorful that sharing one order of it was a challenge. We will come here again and try more tacos for lunch! read more

We were visiting Austin for the weekend, so I wanted to get some great good eats to try. This one was the first stop on the list. All I can say is OMG,.. those were some fantastic tacos, and at a great price. Ordering two tacos, I thought would be good, but I was full after eating the first. I loved the tomatillo salsa. I love Torchy's Tacos, especially the brownies and queso. Their tacos are excellent, with menu items including less spicy and other items that are more adventurous. My favorite taco is Ranch Hand, which has steak, cheese, and egg. This particular location is quite crowded and you have to be careful where you park or you might get towed. I'm not a big barbacoa pro or anything, but I will say that they have the best barbacoa I've had. Everybody has their favorite best-queso-in-Austin spot, but I think it's here. The food is fantastic, but this review is actually about something far more important: character. A friend and I went to get some Torchy's last week. We had food, left and went on our way. Later in the evening she realized she was missing her card holder/wallet thingy. We searched high and low - her apartment, her purse, her car - nowhere to be found. The only thing we could think of is that she must have left it at Torchy's. She called them the next morning when they opened. They had it. She picked it up and everything was there. Not one cent was missing. All cards were there. Driver's license in-tact, everything. THAT is how things are supposed to be. I've been to a few Torchy's locations around Austin since moving here but the one on Spicewood Springs at Mesa is pretty rough. Both times I've been it was dirty inside as well as the patio outside. Sticky tables, dirty floor, etc. I also went through the drive thru there during lunch this week and it took about 21 minutes. Take that for what it's worth. The guy also forgot my drink, he did give it to me for free and apologized for the wait. Once I unwrapped the tacos at my office they were grease buckets, oil dripping everywhere. I'm not sure if they are always like that but it wasn't an appetizing sight. They tasted decent. Either way I feel like there are better Torchy's locations as well as numerous better taco options in town. read more

Like all my Sundays, this was a lazy Sunday and I was bumming around the house catching up on chores when I wasn't just relaxing on the couch. Being a bum of course, meant I woke up late missing What-a-burger breakfast and having some food around the house and generally messing up the eating schedule. So it meant it was going to be a linner (lunch + dinner) day. A lot of my friends had been talking about how awesome Torchy's Tacos were so it seemed like a good place to go and going around 4pm should negate all crowds when I go. Wrong. I got there with a friend around 4:30pm and Torchy's was busy (which was a good thing, means it is probably pretty good). We strolled in and I checked out the menu. I chose The Democrat and The Brushfire tacos along with a drink and it ended up being around $10 -- maybe a little much I initially thought, but I'll wait until I see the tacos to decide as I grabbed my drink and headed to the soda fountain. The soda fountain was full of my most favorite drink of all time: Dublin Dr. Pepper! So right there, I didn't care if the tacos sucked, I come here and just get a drink and drink Dublin Dr. Pepper. So I was feeling damn good about the place now. Then after a little bit of time, they called my name for the tacos and I was even more impressed. The tacos were loaded with meat and toppings.. way better than Taco Deli in my opinion. Now, did they taste good? I threw the salsas onto the respective tacos and then tried to fold them up so I could easily eat them. Not so much luck... too much topping (not a bad thing). I ate the tacos quickly and decided that The Brushfire would be my go-to taco here. The Democrat was good, just not as good as the spicy goodness of the Brushfire. So yeah, after one time eating here, I'd definitely come back as long as I can get me some Brushfire tacos and Dublin Dr. Pepper. read more

My husband and I frequent Torchy's often and we always take friends there who come to visit us here in Austin since it's one of our favorite places to eat. The tacos are like nothing you will find anywhere else. The most unique ideas for tacos I've ever seen and the quality of ingredients is great! I have enjoyed everything I've ever ordered. We did have a hiccup with our order this evening, however, when I brought it to the attention of the staff the manager, Kenny, quickly addressed the issue well beyond my expectations. When we first realized the mistake had been made my husband made a comment only to me about not returning to this location, however, the way the staff was so courteous with our concerns quickly changed his mind. I would highly recommend Torchy's Tacos and I applaud their customer service! They've earned my loyalty. read more

I am head-over-heels in love with Torchy's Tacos, and this is my favorite location. The staff is always incredibly nice and helpful. The tacos, oh the tacos... I swear I have dreams about Torchy's tacos. I usually order the taco of the month to keep things interesting, but my other favorites are the Democrat, Independent, Wrangler, and Fried Avocado. Be wary of the lunch hours... it's a popular spot and the parking before 2pm is horrendous. Most of the parking lot is reserved for a school from 12pm to 2pm, so I recommend making this your dinner place instead. read more

There are so many great taco places in Texas, and Torchy's was (apparently) one of them. They have some pretty fancy options for tacos and their queso is supposedly the best around town. And yes, the queso is indeed delicious and part of it is definitely due to the guac that they drop into the center of it. The two tacos I ordered were the Fried Avocado and the Republican (grilled jalapeño sausage), both on corn. USE THE SAUCES. I tried both of my tacos plain and then with the avocado sauce and they were always much, much better with sauce--too much better. The tacos are nothing without adding at least one sauce, which shouldn't be the case for truly good tacos, in my opinion. Also, the jalapeño sausage in the Republican was completely ordinary and a bit too firm for me to enjoy it. Because many of my friends really liked their tacos from Torchy's, we might be back for more, and I'll get extra sauce. read more

NW Hills location cannot get any worse, 5 regular parking spots, 7 tables inside and 4 outside and no street parking (who thought that was going to work)? There is a lot behind them but it's for the daycare not them and has tow away signs. Came here a few times and was forced to get a drive-thru which is backed up to the street because of how close they are to the street (2 lane road with no parking lane). Did I mention how horrible the location is? I got drive-thru 3 times and every time they forgot something, since there is no parking and no easy way to get back to ask them for the item (without blocking everyone else waiting) you pretty much accept the loss. The last time I just parked in the handicapped spot to get my queso and they gave me an annoyed look: "How dare you come back for something we forgot to give you..." Queso they gave me was half cooked. Another time I asked for a black bean taco which they said was no problem, instead I got a refried beans and way too much cold cheese. Overall the menu is some hit and mostly miss. Fajita tacos are usually very good. Democrat, pork and fried avocado are decent. Almost everything is swimming in oil so by the time you eat your take-out, the tortilla is soaked in oil; generally a soggy mess that requires a fork. I have no idea how people give this place 5 stars, it's not very good and very unpredictable (like a bad relationship, lots of downs that make the ups seem extraordinary if by comparison to something else they are at best average). I probably won't be going back, I spend half of my lunch getting through the drive-thru line (at 11am) and there is never any parking to eat in, I'll settle for a 'lesser' taco if I don't have to deal with the abysmal logistics. read more

This is the second Torchy's I have been to with my wife and it definately lives up to the hype. The tacos are always fresh and delicious and the service has always been great right down to the staff making time to explain the tacos to a newcomer. All in all a definate must eat. And give the Washingtonian a try while it is here it was quite good! read more

I don't think I can add too much to Torchy's reviews. This isn't authentic mexican tacos, but Torchy's has somehow managed to develop its own style of pseudo-mexican, not tex-mex, kind of gringo tacos. And they are delicious! The fried avocado is a can't be missed. The servings are generous and I can almost always use both tortillas to end up making two tacos out of one. The only thing I wish they would improve upon is their chips. If they had better chips, I'd be in heaven. read more

Oh torchys, I so wanted to love you. But it's just not gonna happen. You get excited by the names and descriptions of the tacos. But when they arrived they are super soggy underneath the tortillas. Can't they put some napkins under them or something? I didn't even want to pick it up. I had the fries avocado one and the mushroom one. The avocado one had no distinctive flavors I could taste. The mushroom one it seemed like the flavors were competing. It just didn't work. My hubby had the chicken fajita tacos. He was underwhelmed by his as well. Neither of us are rushing back. No long line wait is worth the meh food we had! read more
