We came to visit this place as a recommendation of this being one of the most famous restaurant chains growing in Texas. I asked for recommendations and they gave us 4 plates of tacos. We also tried the burrito chicken and the shrimp tacos. Steak tacos: steak was really good, served with avocado and onion and sauces on top. Definitely recommend it. Chicken burrito: very big plate, more than enough for one person. If you're not too hungry it can feed two. Comes with guacamole. Shrimp tacos: extremely good, cooked very well. Carnitas tacos: very well cooked And very Savory. Queso and salsa with chips: queso is spicy! Good choice. Salsa was good but not great. This place is not your traditional Mexican 3 to a plate tacos. First time coming to this location and omg the wait time for the tacos to come out was SO DAMN LONG (I've waited for over 30 min just for some tacos). This place wasn't even busy when I came in on a Sunday afternoon. The guy working the cashier didn't even greet me and first thing he said was "what do you want to order". Bad vibes when I first walked in, but I still gave it a shot thinking the tacos would still be worth it. The jalapeño sausage on my ace of spades order did taste good, but too much sauce imo (I did ask for sauce on side but guess they forgot.) They are now being cheap and not putting 2 corn tortillas like they used to, my corn tortilla was literally breaking apart (couldn't even pick it up and eat) and was super oily due to the meat. Don't sit at the bar if you're not one of the glorified waitress/bartenders' regulars....she(dark haired girl that's usually there during the day) will definitely make you feel unwelcome. She was rude to the manager as well, he was just asking a question, and all i wanted to do was sit and watch the game. Clearly rude to me as one of the regulars comes up to the bar and the attitude makes a complete 180, not trying to hide it at all. This location has been my go to for the past 5 years or so. But for the past 3 years or so this place has significantly gone down hill. Not sure what happened, but the food is warm at best. Typically cold tacos by the time you get it. Chips a queso is still on point but be prepared for it to arrive with your cold food because appetizers here are a thing of the past. Torchy's has cut costs on their ingredients unfortunately. Their chicken fajita tacos used to have fresh grilled chicken, you could see and taste the smokiness from being grilled. Yesterday, the taco contained obviously frozen grilled chicken. It had the fake grill marks that you see on Taco Bell chicken, and didn't have any real texture. It was weirdly too soft, which wouldn't happen with fresh chicken. They also stopped giving salsa on the side with your taco and they also changed the quality of the tortilla. This place used to be so good but unfortunately our last two visits were underwhelming. It is hard to say no to the queso. That is why we revisited. They have such a great location but the tacos disappoint. I could tell the tortillas were not warmed as well as the pork inside. Staff seemed better this time. Especially a young man who brought out our food. Not only was he kind but he was dressed professionally and we could tell he worked there. The majority of the staff I noticed didn't even have work shirts on and were wearing sweat pants. I remember about 3 years ago eating lunch at Torchys and it would be packed. I really want to like Torchy's but every time I go I'm disappointed. The tacos are mediocre at best and ridiculously overpriced. $4.85 for a single beef fajita taco - are you serious? There are multiple small businesses in the area that have delicious and reasonably priced tacos - Torchy's is just not it. The queso and lil nookies are good but that's about it. Was visiting the area from out of town and stopped in with friends. We waited in line for about 10 mins before we ordered, but once we ordered the food came out quickly. The chips and queso had great flavor but it was way too spicy for me. The thin chips were good. The steak fajita taco was spicy and very Americanized and not a real taco. The street corn was the best part of the meal. It's a small restaurant but plenty of seating. I will not return as there are other Mexican restaurants in the area. I like the food here but I do not think this place tastes good enough to charge more than $3.50 for a taco. They used to give 2 tortillas when you choose corn but they don't do that anymore which sucks because my tortilla was super soggy and barely existed. And this one is just like anything else in San Antonio or college station Simple fun quick service food Out of all the tacos I have tried there are only a couple that are worth the wait. The burrito however should just be pulled off the menu. The queso and guac is really one of the best things on the menu. And you can't forget the street corn. Sweet corn season and spiced to perfection. All in all I have had pretty good experiences with all the Torchy's. but nothing beats what you get in Austin This place is a dump. #1- the counter for the take out, is disgustingly sticky and dirty! #2- be prepared to be ignored and treated like garbage when asking for, paying, and picking up your order. 3- After being treated like crap, the cashier will offer you to speak to a manager as a surprise gift for being a regular customer and the employee decided to be a jerk. Okay okay okay, I'm not from Texas so I had a lot of local Texans tell me this place was so 50/50 in terms of their tacos but honestly I like reallllllly liked it. Obv nothing really beats taco trunks for some authentic tacos but this place had such a great variety of different meats and flavors of tacos that it was great for everyone and all their different taste buds. Picked up my favorite queso dip and chips for Super Bowl 55 on Sunday. The game was underwhelming but the queso was a HIT!

I love Torchys and this location is horrible. I ordered a Democrat, Two Fajita, and some Queso. The chips for the queso were half fried, chewy, greasy, and cold - fitting for the cold queso with a huge chunk of avacado peel inside it. The fajitas were NOT skirt steak. They were tough and full of gristle and everything including the Democrat was room temperature. The place wasn't busy and it all took about 25 minutes to arrive. I noticed the manager because he was interviewing a girl for a job two tables away. A grey headed middle aged cool looking guy with glasses. He came by with some food for another table apologizing for it taking so long and I stopped him to tell him my experience. I showed him the plate of picked over food and was pretty blunt about how much I like Torchy's and that this was the worst one I had ever been to. He asked for the opportunity to fix it - and went of to have my food remade. 10 minutes later he still hadn't come back so I Just left. From the very little bit I did eat I spent the rest of the night in the bathroom regretting it. I'm wondering now if the upset stomach and room temperature food has something to do with failure to follow safe food handling procedures, but there is now way to prove that. This is in a high end area and I expected more. Right now they are getting by in a recognizable name but I'm willing to bet that can't last much longer. I'll never be back. My first experience with Torchy's Tacos was in Austin with friends who know of my taco obsession. Ever since, I have been hooked. I love authentic Mexican tacos, but Torchy's offers variety! I come to this location because it is the closest. Usually, I call ahead with an order to pick up at the bar and leave. One time I have dined here, and the line moved reasonably. I have dined a few times at Rice Village and Montrose, which can be a wait most of the time. Food I have tried: Green Chile Queso & Chips (4/5): Chile queso with guacamole, cilantro, and diablo hot sauce. I mean, if you have not tried this... where have you been?! This is definitely shareable between 3 people. I usually like to ask for more diablo hot sauce and kick it up a notch. Democrat (3/5): Shredded beef barbacoa topped with fresh avocado, queso fresco, cilantro, onions and a lime wedge. Served with tomatillo salsa on fresh corn tortilla. This can be a hit or miss for me. It's never consistent when it comes to the barbacoa. There are days when it's juicy then not juicy. Usually, I like to mix the tomatillo salsa and avocado salsa with this. Fried Avocado (1/5): Hand-battered avocados fried and served with vegetarian refried beans, topped with pico, lettuce and cheese. Served with poblano sauce on fresh corn tortilla. I remember this was the first taco I tried from Torchy's Austin. I love avocados, but this taco didn't do it for me. Never ordered again. Republican (2/5): Grilled jalapeño sausage, shredded cheese, and pico de gallo. Served with poblano sauce and on a flour tortilla. I'd say the first 2 bites were great before the sausage overpowered everything. In other words, too much meat for me. For you meat heads, cast this Republican a vote. Never ordered again. Brushfire (4/5): Jamaican jerk chicken, grilled jalapeño, mango, sour cream, and cilantro. Served with diablo hot sauce on a flour tortilla. This is one of my go-to's with an extra diablo hot sauce. Can you handle heat? Everything goes well together. If you aren't into sweet and spicy, don't try it then. Otherwise, I definitely recommend this baby. Baja Shrimp (3/5): Hand-battered fried shrimp with cooked cabbage slaw topped with pickled jalapeño, onions, queso fresco, cilantro, and a lime wedge. Served with chipotle sauce. I love the mix with the cabbage slaw, which you can't really go wrong with. This is a hit or miss for me though. I've had from 3 to 6 pieces of shrimp, either being bland or salty. Mr. Orange (5/5): Blackened salmon topped with grilled corn and black bean relish, queso fresco, and cilantro. Drizzled with avocado salsa, then served with a lime wedge on fresh corn tortilla. This is my absolute favorite. It was my second taco I tried aside from Fried Avocado. I never had a problem with this taco and keep going back for more. Salmon was cooked perfectly. You. Will. Not. Regret. Hipster (2/5): Panko fried tuna, with green chiles, chopped bacon, black bean relish, cilantro, and cotija cheese. Served on a flour tortilla with avocado sauce and a lime wedge. Secret Menu. I personally have not tried Mr. Pink, but I'm an experimenter. The bread crumbs on the tuna are not bready. Tuna was probably a medium rare. I didn't like the bacon with this at all. It's kind of hard to eat this because the tuna is huge. Nothing really stood out to me though. Missionary Style Pork (4/5): Slow roasted pork carnitas with pickled onions, guacamole, shredded jack cheese and cilantro. Drizzled with creamy chipotle on a crisp corn tortilla inside of a flour tortilla. Secret Menu. Pork went well with the guacamole and chipotle. Thank goodness for the pickled onions. They just add the missing oomph. By the way, this taco is pretty heavy but double tortilla for the win. **Happy Hour is from 3-7PM Monday-Friday. $1.50 off all beers, $1 off margaritas, and $0.50 off everything else **Daily Specials run all day. Here each Taco type has names like The Republican, The Democrat, The Crossroads or The Brushfire. They also run a monthly taco special that links to the season. I try to eat something new each visit at Torchy's but do have my favorites. The tacos are big and meaty enough where just one makes a meal but two is possible for a norma human. Certainly if you want to wash that down with a local craft beer or any of their delicious beverages. You can see that Torchy's is popular because there is often a long line of people waiting to place their orders. I like the La Centerra Torchy's over Rice Village location too. The tacos are $3-5, they have calorie counts on the menu, and they're pretty big as far as tacos go. I eat two, and I'm decently full. The service at this location was friendly, generous, and funny - and he even brought us some complementary chips and salsa. I know it's a chain, and it's Americanized, and ok fine, yes I would rather pay around $1/taco, but I can't complain. It's a good place, ample parking, quick service, and they server beer.
