My wife and I found this awesome establishment a few years ago and we frequent it as much as we can. In my opinion, no Mexican place anywhere near here can beat Toretes. Food: The food here is amazing. It's not flashy. It's not over the top, it's just simply amazing. It's the type of food that even though you've eaten until you're full, you keep eating because it just tastes soo good. Service: We have never had poor service here... ever. Our server (I don't know her name but she's always there), is super polite, very attentive, always goes out of her way to make sure you have everything you need. Ambiance: The place is not over the top fancy or flashy. It's a relatively small place with interesting decorations everywhere you look. But the moment you step inside you immediately smell all the fantastic food being cooked, it literally fills the air because it's literally 15 feet away. I believe the chef and server are the owners and they bust their butts to prepare delicious food. When I walk to the register to pay I always tell the server how awesome everything was and tonight I even had a chance to let the chef know everything was just perfect. The smiles and thank you's I get in return are sincere and I know they appreciate the compliments. Alright - me and the Fiancé are crazy for Mexican food, so we were really, really excited about this place. We ventured in on a quiet Saturday night. To my knowledge, we were the first customers of the night. Our waitress was hospitable, very nice and welcoming. Upon sitting down, we were offered the trifecta of salsas. As pictured, red salsa, a green salsa and an orange salsa. The red was a mild spice and acidic. Not my favorite, but good. The green was very interested. Definitely some sweetness here and there, but a good burn going down your gullet. Finally, the orange salsa. For those with spice sensitivity, WATCH OUT!! Personally, I love spicy food, regardless of the side effects the next day. Heart burn, and you know what else... Anyway, I loved those salsas. I am going to call and order salsa so I can just have it at my house!! What can I say? I can be devious. The food. The old ball and chain for Quesabirria. I'll be honest, we were not blown away. The birria broth was good, but far from the best I've had. In addition, the quesadilla was good, I just wish it was dipped in the birria and then cooked. 6/10. My dish is pictured second, I'm sorry that I cannot remember the name. It was a chicken, beef, shrimp spicy fajitas meal. It was quite good! It looks really spicy, but it was actually pretty moderate. Beef was tender, shrimp was nice and taught! Chicken was buss. All in all, 7/10. The meal was fairly priced, and my finance and I had a nice evening. As you all painfully know, my lactose intolerance has really been an issue when going out to eat, but this place treated me well. What an amazing Surprise! The three salsas are just amazing. The red is tasty and just the right heat. I am not a hot person but I like these! The orange is great , the Green salsa.... Not your tomatillo salsa. This is a combo of herbs and oil that is as creamy as a guacamole without the avocado! Certainly a culinary delight!! Quite honestly I have to say these are probably the best salsas we have had at any Mexican restaurant!!! The shredded chicken is moist and tasty. The Enchiladas Verde I would say probably one of the best we've had. The barbacoa is delicious and moist. It is Tasty ,just yummy. I love barbacoa but sometimes it has too much cinnamon for me. Here the seasoning is just right. The Quesabirria( quesadilla with Barbacoa.)and the dipping broth is delish. Small pieces of sweet onion and cilantro floating on top and just beautiful and as tasty as it looks! There appears to be a full bar too. Not a large restaurant, front area is kitchen and take out. This nondescript Mexican tucked away in Van Dyke is the real deal. Service was friendly and attentive. It has the vibe if a Mexican restaurant in Mexico. But a non touristy one. To be honest, I don't understand any of these bad reviews that post photos of delicious looking food. I came here a few weeks ago with my partner and we had an amazing time! The service was great, the food was delicious and the margaritas were fantastic. Truly the best Margarita I've ever had. I got the classic with a salt rim and it was gigantic. The food prices are reasonable and everything I ate was authentic and delicious. The staff works very hard, juggling bartending, front of house, and back of house service. I would not recommend this place if you're concerned about piece for portion size. The portions were tiny! We paid for chips & salsa. We received one tiny 1 oz cup of salsa for our 2 bags of chips. (The chips were delicious by the way!) Paid for 2 orders of beans and rice. Received 2, tiny 1 oz cups of beans. The guacamole was okay, nice large portion, big thick chunky onions, but more onions than avocado, it was onions and tomatoes with a little avocado in between. The red sauce was just tomato paste? My wife and I were looking for a new restaurant to try and found Toretes. At first it was difficult to find as we drove passed the restaurant, it was dark and the lighting outside was lacking. The parking lot was very dark. We entered the building at the restaurant had pretty good decor for being a Mexican restaurant. We ordered the beef flautas and a taco dinner. The beef flautas did not have very much taste, really bland. I had the taco dinner which came with 3 tacos, I chose ground beef as my meat. Although, if I wanted to be courageous I could have gone with tongue or head. Not really sure what head is but I wasn't doing it. I enjoyed my taco dinner as the ground beef had a nice flavor and a little heat. We also had 3 types of sauce mild, medium and extra hot. I went with the medium and it was pretty hot. Oh by the way it is not a bar, the bar does not exist. There was no alcohol anywhere in the building that we could tell. read more

Let me start this review by saying that I am so full I can hardly breathe. Ahhh. We wanted to try a new place. One that was mom and pop type that would need some support. So we went through Yelp and found this place. We ordered take out. We went to pick it up and passed it by while trying to find it. Twice! It's tiny! What a great little spot! We got the food in the car and the smell was incredible. I wanted to dig in right away! But I controlled myself (for the time being!) I ordered chicken chimichangas and he ordered a wet burrito with jalapenos. The only thing knocking a star off was that I believe we both ordered meals, and mine came with rice and his did not. Rice and beans are cheap fillers. I'm not sure why they wouldn't just include that. But then again, I never eat the rice and beans so I don't really care. But he does. Shrugs* he just ate mine so no biggie. I was also a little disappointed that they didn't include chips and salsa. Again, seems like a cheap filler... But, as I said, I'm so full I can not move right now. The burrito was the size of my head. And there were two chimichangas. I worried that they would be soggy, but no. They were still crispy and delicious. I think they should be served with a side of sour cream and was surprised that they didn't offer it. However, it is supposed to be authentic Mexican. Pretty sure sour cream is an American thing. I love it thought. Mmmm. Any way, mission accomplished. The food was quick, hot and delicious. The tiny restaurant was cute, warm, and inviting. I don't ever write reviews, but I'm compelled to write a review for this place. I visit my girlfriend often in Washington township, and being from Ferndale surrounded by multiple great cities for authentic food, this place was a great find for me. I mean, it's actually authentic Mexican, in the middle of close to nowhere, it's authentic! The experience: When I walked in I was greeted by the sweetest little girl (she must be about five), and she handed me a mint. So that right there made my day. Then the waitresses were super friendly and attentive, which was bonus, but even if they weren't the food speaks for itself. So, if you are looking for good Mexican food, and you're from out this way, or just passing by I highly recommend it. The experience is great. It's quite refreshing to be in this environment and not surrounded by just white people. This place seems family owned if I had to guess. The food: Free chips and salsa was very nice! The pastor and the asada tacos are super good! You have the option of hard shell or authentic. I chose authentic because that is the experience and taste I prefer. Every place does their pastor a little differently, but their pastor is marinated very well. I was very pleased! The sauces are amazing as well so if you aren't used to traditional Mexican and you think it's dry use the sauces they are awesome they have three choices: mild, medium, and hot. The mild is sweet, the medium is like a verde and not much hotter than mild, and then hot is like a chipotle type flavor, and is hot but not over bearing at all if you like hot sauces. The previous reviews: If they have had bad reviews, I'd question the one writing the review, and not the establishment. If there are bad reviews, I'd say it was most likely left by an extremely uppity, I'm so important you should treat me like I'm the president of the United States type that tries to find a problem... This restaurant is under new ownership and just didn't impress me or my friend in any way. Let's start with the tortilla chips that weren't very good. I can buy better chips at the grocery store. Back up to the service and the waitress (who looked about 14 years old) appeared as bored as you can get!! The menu had at least half of the items crossed out and the remaining selections were strange and not common for a Mexican restaurant. I got the grilled chicken that came with Mexican rice and beans and the chicken was a bit tough and the beans were watery and bland. Wow. We were heading to Taco Loco and this popped up on Yelp with great reviews so we mixed it up and I'm so glad we did! Thankfully, I read that the place can't be judged by the exterior, because my hubby was like.. uh this looks like a dump in the parking lot. Fantastic food and service, super authentic. This place is fantastico! A co-worker had recommended this place, but since it's so far from me, I hadn't had a chance to go. We happened to be up this way at the pumpkin patch, and it was late and dinner was calling. I remembered about this Taqueria and we ended up going. Boy, am I glad we made that decision! My better half had a chimichanga, as is her habit, and it looked very good. She decided to go outside of her comfort zone and got it with al pastor (marinated pork), and she said it was really tasty. My mother-in-law got enchiladas and enjoyed them a lot. We got a chicken quesadilla for my little one, and she ended up eating rice so I had that for a late-night snack, and it was great. I got 3 tacos, and enjoyed them all. The chicken was my least favorite, it was a little dry. The al pastor was great, and the carne asada (steak) was so good that I ordered another one! The service was also great, our waitress checked on us often (they were slow that night but I suspect that would be the case at any time). The place was a little messy and a few tables were uncleaned because they seemed a little understaffed for the volume of people. There were quite a few locals who eyed us a little suspiciously but we ignored them. Staff were fine but again a little busy. Food: Being a San Diegan, I can say this place has some of the best tacos I've had. The corn tortillas were steamed and packed with a decent amount of meat. The pastor tacos were incredibly savory with a complex marinade. The asada was moist and had a great grill flavor as well. My wife enjoyed her carnitas and cabeza tacos as well. I wasn't as big a fan of the salsas as they lacked body and balance but did have a good chile flavor. We ordered from Toretes and it was definitely NOT a 4 star meal. My wife had a taco salad that was more like garden salad in a fried tortilla. It was cold, the ground beef had zero flavor and she had hunt for it, there was no sour cream, nor black olives. The tortilla was soggy on the bottom and was not very tasty. I had a wet burrito that also was cold. The ground beef also had zero seasoning and was scattered amongst more rice and shredded lettuce. Again, no sour cream nor jalapenos that I had added to my order. The hottest thing in this order was some sauce that was orangeish in color. I doubt I will order from here again. read more
