We pulled up to the restaurant at 4:45 right before our reservation and boom right in front 2 hour free parking! We walk in and festive music was playing we were greeted right away by our waitress. We sat down wherever we wanted since we were the first peeps there! Marian our waitress came right back with water and explained the entire menu and how it all worked. We ordered a bunch of tapas starting with the Jamon iberica and man was it delicious! As was all of our food, she also made our drinks mojitos and the old fashioned were great!! Everything came out so fash and fresh and we pigged out! The last to come out was the paella, and wow was it delicious! Make sure to order it with the habenero lime sauce, its so good!! Really enjoyed this visit to Toro on Commerce Street, so much so that I forgot to take many pictures! I had been to the 1604 location before and found the downtown spot just as good. They only reason for 4 stars vs 5 is that the Spanish trio music was wonderful but too loud for the small space and the restaurant seemed too crowded to be COVID conscious. I love Spanish guitar and one musician would have been plenty as it was hard to talk and enjoy conversation. But enough of that quibbling, let's talk about the delicious food! I had the Bacon Wrapped Goat Cheese Stuffed Dates, Solomillo, Scallops with guacamole and a couple of cocktails. Everything was cooked perfectly. I wish I could have lingered longer but I was really struggling to hear my date so we moved on to the next spot. I was hoping to visit the downstairs bar but it was at capacity so be sure to make a reservation for the restaurant and the bar if you plan to visit. Toro doesn't disappoint! I love a family style type of restaurant where you ordered a bunch of small dishes and try a little bit of everything! I stopped in to the pizzeria because the doorman at the cellar told me they didn't like my dress. I had a drink at the pizza place and received a well made cocktail and great service from Connie. Presentation of the food: 4/5, taste of the food 2/5, atmosphere: 1.5/5, service 2/5. Overall it was very disappointing. Every dish was on the salty side. Had high expectations of the squid ink paella and it wasn't so tasty. It was burnt on the bottom to the point that we could smell it and they charge more than $30 for burnt rice with a few pieces of seafood in it? No thank you! (And to the owner that responded below: I've had enough rice dishes so I don't need a lecture on what caramelized rice is. I can tell the difference burnt and caramelized rice.) The best one would be the scallops with the guacamole. Scallops were cooked perfectly but it was way overpriced for 3 little scallops. Blood sausage taste ok, but again, very salty. The octopus with garlic oil was good. Probably the second best dish at the place. Service was poor. The waitress seems to be gone most of the time and we waited for 10 mins to flag someone so they can tell the waitress to bring the check over. The music was super loud and seems like there's also a underground bar underneath the restaurant that's constantly playing loud music to the point that the floor was shaking. This is by far my favorite restaurant in San Antonio. The service is always quick, the wait staff is extremely friendly, and we are always ready to plan our next visit. We have been to Toro twice already and there hasn't been a single thing that we don't like. The patatas bravas are spicy but incredibly delicious. The spice is offset by the creamy garlic dipping sauce. Toro also has live music on Saturdays, so make sure you visit when the band is playing. If you do want to visit on a Saturday you should definitely make a reservation as well, which can be done on Yelp. Our go to drink here is the sangria, it is always made to perfection! If you are looking into trying something different, or taking visitors somewhere fun definitely take them to Toro on a Saturday night. read more

Our server was very knowledgeable of the menu and took time to explain the variety of foods available. Also insured that my dates request for a fully cooked portion was met without difficulty. Unfortunately the location of this restaurant is hampered by the lack of parking, especially on a Friday night where parking is consumed by the ESPEE. Customers should ask for the cost of their drinks before ordering, my date requested a specific kind of wine and it was delivered in a very small bottle that cost $20.. very overpriced for the wine delivered. read more

While enjoying a staycation decided to try this place out 3/15 at around 3pm. We were greeted and asked if we had a reservation, found it odd as the place was empty. As we were walked to our table it was obvious that the place had not been cleaned from the previous night, some tables still had dishes and bread on the floor. One of my favorite places in the Downtown area. The Paellas are big enough for two to share. My friend and I came here and ordered the smaller portion of Seafood Paella. It was big enough to fill both of our bellies and some to take home. I do recommend coming early if you're an octopus lover like myself, they tend to run out of the Pulpo Galleo. The ambiance transfers you over to Spain with lowly dimmed lights, music, and a display of their wines and cured meats. It pains me to write this review, but I feel the need to. First, the food here is great. I've eaten here a couple of times and really enjoyed it. However, I'm very disappointed with the experience I just had. We made reservations for 7PM earlier today and we had family meeting us. In the reservation, we specified we wanted indoor seating since it's currently 104° outside. It's 6:20PM, less than an hour before our reservation and we just got a call telling us they don't have indoor seating available. So yeah, less than an hour before our reservation, they tell us our options are to cancel (with no time to make a reservation elsewhere) or sit in 104° heat. If they had called us earlier, I would've understood but this is just very poor service and I'm not sure I'd be willing to give them my business in the future. It's a shame too since we really enjoyed our other experiences. Edit: Also, there was no willingness to find us a solution. If they would've offered to see if they could seat us later or checked with their other location to see if they could squeeze us in, I would not be writing a bad review. What we got was just "sorry for the inconvenience". read more

This is literally my fav restaurant in San Antonio. Sadly, I have yet to try their Paella, might have to change that. I love their calamares, pulpo al ajillo, panela 43, and dátiles al tocino. (To ñame a few) I've had the patatas multiple times and don't think they have the right flavor (in my non professional Spanish food connoisseur opinion). However, I still enjoy them every time. Stopped by here as it was walking distance from my hotel and I was barbecued out. I got the pulpo al ajillo, the Spanish sardines and croquettes. All of them were delicious but the standout was the octupus. We've been here a few times, the food is very good every time we visit, as is the service. I wear hearing aids and the inside dining noise levels make it impossible to hear conversations on busy nights so we always opt for outside seating and try to come when it's less busy. read more

My friend and I came here on a weekday for dinner. We got sat and served right away. We ordered the octopus with potatoes, tortilla, and mushrooms. Octopus was good. It wasn't overly done. Tortilla was a mini miss for me. The potatoes in it came in relatively large chunks rather than thin sliced pieces, which is what I'm used too. The mushrooms were my favorite because it was soaked in olive oil with garlic and chorizo. What was bizarre to me about our dining experience is that the server seemed very pushy. She greeted us with unsolicited cocktail suggestions. I hadn't seen my friend in awhile so we were catching up, and she kept checking up on us and we kept asking for more time. It felt as if we were rushed to order. It wasn't busy so maybe that's why she was so in our faces. This is very different than what I've experienced with other Spanish restaurants, and I didn't appreciate it. In the Spanish culture, they're all about sobrelamesa, which is includes socializing and taking the time to enjoy. With the limited meals I have in San Antonio since I travel here for work, i wouldn't come back personally. read more

Took my sister to treat her to some cuisine from Spain. The place is nice, dim lighting very clean. The hostess were nice, they were okay. Our waiter was more polite and friendly. The tapas I ordered were so delicious but! It was happy hour. The special was buy 2 and get the third free. I was charged for 3! And the waiter knew it but didn't say anything. He literally told us beforehand about the special but didn't correct it. I know he saw the receipt. Unfortunately, my sister and I had to rush out. We had tickets to a performance at the majestic. I didn't have time to protest the receipt. I thought it was a bit pricey. So I would score this place 3 1/3 stars out of 5. Will I go again? Probably, I always give a place a second chance. He studied in Spain. The jamon Iberico was as good as I've had at the Boqueria market in Barcelona. The paella was out of this world. Try the arroz negro. This is now officially my FAVORITE restaurant! I was visiting for the weekend and very excited to have a reservation here. I spent 6 months in Barcelona and thoroughly enjoyed the food while there. There is a tapas restaurant back home that is pretty good, but this one completely blew it out of the water! They had all the classics: pan con tomate, patatas bravas, camarones con ajo, and of course paella! We started off with a selection of jamón ibérico which was so flavorful. Then we had the tortilla Espanola, champinoñes, and Panela 43 which was fried cheese served in honey liquor. Lastly, we had the paella with the crispy bottom which I HIGHLY recommend paired with the white sangria. I cannot emphasize enough how delicious and flavorful everything is - you just have to go there for yourself and see! The restaurant is set outside of downtown in this cute little Barrio and definitely a place preferred by locals and tourists alike. If you have never had Spanish food before or want something off the beaten path, you must go here. Regardless you should go! PRO TIP: We went during lunch, but it looks like it has a stage and we thought it would be better at night so as to enjoy the live music. read more

Looking for excellent pulpo, go here. Paella, not so much, unless you like A LOT of rice. The waitress (Cindy) was excellent! The inside was excessively noisy, so we asked to be seated outside. Nice setting outside, but they had two different music channels playing and it was very distracting. We ordered the mushrooms with chorizo, pulpo, a bottle of wine, paella, and dessert. The mushrooms were fair and the chorizo was tasty. The pulpo was tender and excellent with exceptional garlic and red chili - nice kick! The paella with seafood was mostly rice. Squid ink, 3 mussels, 3 shrimp, a few calamari rings, and one baby octopus, and MORE rice. Flavor was nothing to write home about, this would have been a huge favorite with more seafood. Dessert was not on the menu, so had to scan the code. We ordered the traditional spanish dessert (can't remember the name), sweet bread soaked in cream and fried with honey liquor poured over. It was VERY lightly fried, even unnoticeable on some of the pieces, the honey liquor was flavorful. The only thing I could recommend would be the pulpo.
