Toro Tei was convenient for a quick meal as we were staying at the Royal Sonesta where it is located. It has an incredible view of the giant pool and beach, and the service was pretty fast. I got the miso soup which was exactly what I needed after a long day and 2 pieces each of salmon and tuna nigiri, which was super fresh!! I preferred the tuna to the salmon since it had more flavor, but both were good. It's a bit pricey but the fish was really fresh. If you are craving sushi, this is a good spot but not necessarily a must-try restaurant in Kauai. read more

Before the food, our server Shalyn was awesome! She was super personable and made our experience better than most every service I've had anywhere else, even off Kauai. The music of the night was David Parsons (on spotify) and he sounds like Jack Johnson. Very soothing and mellow voice that was sent from God (or gods if youre into that). On our last day of our trip to Kauai we spent the day at the Senesta. After a long day of swimming we stopped at the sushi bar and were greeted by "Auntie Jayne" as we call her now. She was the sweetest lady and made the trip. Not to mention the food was absolutely amazing. The sashimi is so fresh and the seared salmon roll was out of this world. My mistake. I was so overloaded with red meat by the time my Kauai trip came to a close, I just had to have some sushi. Hawaii is a state that knows how to handle their fish so how bad could the sushi be? Let's just say Toro Tei lives up to its ratings. When we got our first two rolls, I thought they were only one roll. One was deep-fried with molecules of tuna, salmon, cucumber, and eel. The Spicy Ahi Poke is simple. $28 for two 5-piece rolls. The Da Ali'i is worse. The spicy lobster topping is filling and rich, but $15 for 5 pieces?! That's $3 PER PIECE! I've had high-end nigiri cheaper than than that! The rolls taste pretty good, but Toro Tei will gut you like a fish with their pricing. AvoidAvoidAvoid! read more

The restaurant is just a bar inside of another restaurant, but that's ok. My problem was the balance of food quality and price. Very average tasting rolls and selection of sushi. You won't find something as simple as Salmon roll. It's better to drive to other towns, where they have some great authentic sushi places:) read more

Ok not the sushi chef fault. But the ahi the hamachi and I stopped there, was NOT FRESH. BRYCE WAS KIND AND TRIED TO MAKE US HAPPY. But today was a bad day here at Toro-Tei. Its 5 days later, I've been thinking. It was Bryce fault for not recommending something else. Working there for 11 years and being local, he should know the freshness and quality of fish. Really cool sushi bar right by the beach. The decor and food were top notch. We ordered the chirashi sampler and a couple rolls. We had never had a chirashi before but were in for a treat. It had many layers of sushi layered over sushi rice (see pic). So much food too and filling too. I think this beautiful creation was only $19. Our two rolls, salmon and eel were just great too. The sushi chef was friendly and presented everything beautifully. If you are staying at the Marriott, this is the best place to go eat, even if you are not staying, its a neat place for dinner instead of the other tourist joints. read more

We were traveling all day and wanted sushi asap so we settled for the sushi bar at the hotel we're staying at. Miso soup bland, I've had better insta miso soup. Hamachi sashimi was too thick and not properly cut. I don't mind paying $14 for sashimi but at least trim off the brown ends for me so I don't have chopstick cut them off. Ugg. I've eaten sushi all over the world and I cannot recall ever having a "chef" as dour and crabby as Bryce. Completely unfriendly and unwelcoming. The edamame was stale. The ahi tacos were tasty, but difficult to eat. The lobster kalapaki roll was unremarkable and tasted like crab, not lobster. The shrimp temptation roll was sour and bland. At least they have maui brewing beer on the menu. This place should close now, rather than insult the guests of the hotel further. What a shame. read more

The sushi is a bit on the expensive side, but considering that the location is at a Marriott on Kauai, I understand why. Having said that, it is of high quality and the portions are pretty good. Please save yourself from this place. If it's sushi you are looking for, there must be better places than this. We are staying at the marriott and thought it would be good and convenient to get sushi here for dinner. I wish I wouldn't have wasted my money or would have decided to try one of the other resort restaurants. The rice was stale and the fish did not taste near as fresh as I would expect it to in Hawaii. I had ordered a couple of orders of sashimi as well and while it was not terrible, it reminded me of grocery store fish more than restaurant fish. So many other food options on the island within a very close proximity to waste any time or money at this sushi spot. Chef was absolutely amazing!! Went back 3 nights during our stay on Kauai and would highly recommend. Amazing quality and top shelf service. The sushi chef made us feel like Ohana and recommended the best items and made some off the menu items in honor of our wedding anniversary. Do not be fooled by the smallish menu at Toro Tei. Long time Sushi Chef Bryce is a Master Sushi Chef who delivers extremely tasty works of art using a limited fish palette. Let him know what you like and you will not be disappointed. While the Marriott does not provide exotic fish choices on the menu (these probably would not sell well to their clientele), absolutely every dish Bryce has prepared for us over the past dozen plus years has been succulent and memorable. Spicy lobster, tender hamachi, flavorful eel, and the finest ahi and salmon are some of the best sushi I have had ANYWHERE. A few of us decided to have sushi one night in Kauai around 8:30pm, keep in mind the sushi bar is open from 5:30pm-9pm. Luckilly, we were able to sit down and order, but it was last call. I ordered the salmon sushi pc (2pcs per order) and a yellotail handroll with cucumber (custom order). My boyfriend ordered one of the poke bowls, which he said was pretty good, I disagreed. I've been searching all of Kauai for nigiri. I judge a sushi restaurant by the fish and the sushi rice, not the rolls. Salmon was from the pacific, very smooth and juicy, though not fatty. I ordered another, too good not to. Hamachi nigiri was very delicate and mild. Pleasant. Ahi nigiri was so-so. I was staying at the Marriott last week, and got hungry for sushi, so I stopped by the Toro Tei Sushi Bar. I had maguro and kani nigiri, along with a vegetable temaki, for $26. I was tempted to also get a beer, but the prices scared me away. Having had a lot of sushi in my time, it was good - nothing special, but nothing shameful, either. I got my sushi needs met. The advantage is that this was in the Marriott, so very convenient, but being in the Marriott, the prices were premium as well. The sushi bar is at the corner of Kukui's restaurant, and almost seems an afterthought. When I went there, nearly the whole bar was still filled with dirty dishes, left uncleared, and the bar was not staffed. I thought they had closed, and the chef and waitress seemed sort of annoyed that I showed up. Service was not speedy, but not insulting, either. Overall, OK. read more

I've eaten here at the sushi bar at least 5 times over the last 8 years. Bryce has been the sushi chef every time I've been here and he's awesome. I've had sushi at other places on the island but I keep coming back here. It is the most underrated sushi on the island. The fish is always fresh and the sushi is consistently great. This place is definitely a hidden gem. It's tucked away by the pool restaurant in the Marriott. There is sometimes live music playing too. I look forward to having sushi here whenever I come to the island. read more

Ok so I love me some sushi!! So when I saw this sushi bar at our resort I was excited. I assumed that being by the ocean in a nice resort that the sushi would be good - boy was I wrong! We ordered yellowtail sashimi, their "best roll" which was a lobster roll and some ahi poke.First off my yellowtail was fishy tasting...ugh!! Second the lobster roll was ok - but while prices look good keep in mind you only get 4 pieces. The ahi was pretty good, best thing we had that night. I had to keep drinking to make the meal better which brings me to the service, my waiter was very hard to find. Yep I said find...I basically had to raise my hand for another drink. I was staying at Marriott and was recommended to have sushi here , I can't tell you how horrible sushi was!! it felt like cardboard ... we had spicy tuna, spicy salmon, rainbow and tampura ... We left at least 6 pieces because it was so difficult to finish. waste of time, meal and money. Drinks however were really good and the bread , i filled myself up with the drink and bread and went to bed. Terrible sushi , Please don't waste money there. Mediocre sushi, but great service. Ricey rolls, but when the chef made a boo-boo, they gave us the cheaper, accidental roll at its lower cost and also included the roll we ordered for free. The only thing this restaurant has going for it is it's location. We were excited to try the sushi here but it was awful. The rice was not sticky and fish was borderline nasty. We really thought being on the ocean we would be guaranteed good sushi. Unfortunately this place only provided massive disappointment. We got a couple of rolls and sashimi and it was overpriced and barely edible. We also got the edamme and I've never had edamme that you didin't finish but this was disgusting and we couldn't do it. Soggy, and smelled a little funny. It's too bad this place isn't better. The location is ideal right on the beach. Hopefully they make some fixes and it gets better. read more
