Breakfast Bentos
Rob B.

Convient but shrinking breakfast options. Now missing the Spam musubi no longer found here but can be found on the pool menu at lunch. So'k loosing luster if you go every year

View from Aupaka Terrace

Perfect little spot. Breakfast bento box? Yes, please! The aunties who work here are super nice and friendly. And you can grab a table with a view of the pool, palm trees, and ocean.

Update: it's hard to resist buying a bento breakfast here. It's such a nice way to start the day. The ladies that work there are always happy to help you with your purchase and the tables available offer a beautiful view to enjoy as you relax and enjoy your breakfast. And, the refillable cups of coffee are always good! Update: still a convenient place for breakfast with nice bento breakfast, good coffee, and good service. The staff working the counter are efficient and very nice people! Original review:It's a convenient location for breakfast if you're staying at the Kauai Marriott Resort hotel. There are several seating areas to choose from that offers a view from above the pool and out beyond to the beach; or, you may opt to take your food back to your room. The food is packaged for "to-go" style which makes it easy to carry to whatever location you choose. We each had the Portuguese egg and fried rice bento which was just the right portion and very tasty...I could taste the butter used to cook the scrambled eggs...very good but I started thinking about calories and how many laps around the pool to work it off...oh, well... on vacation gotta relax a little. The price of each breakfast bento, $9. I also purchased a pineapple fruit cup. It was cut in bite sized cubes, sweet and fresh! Price $5. They offer croissants, breakfast pastry, oatmeal, breakfast sandwiches, juice, and coffee with one free refill.

While we stayed at the Marriott in Lihue during our most recent visit, Kukui's was closed for remodel (reopening September 1, 2009). The rooms lack cooking facilities, so we ate out most nights. This trip we choose to go places within walking distance, and that included Duke's Canoe Club, Gingbua Thai Restaurant, and Aupaka Terrace. I don't think of Aupaka Terrace as a destination restaurant for non-guests, but overall we were really pleased with the food we had there. Aupaka Terrace features: * Four nightly specials * Extensive sushi menu * Full bar * Outdoor (sheltered terrace) dining overlooking pool and ocean * Breakfast * Weekend brunch What we tried here: * Chicken chow mein * Fresh Hawaiian catch with banana salsa * Teriyaki ribeye with vegetable stir-fry * Unagi avocado maki (not on the sushi menu, but they made it anyway) * Chi Chi (Pina Colada with vodka) and Mai Tai * Chocolate Burst (dessert) * Bento box (breakfast takeout with scrambled egg, sticky rice, sausage, and pickled vegetables) * Cut pineapple (breakfast takeout) Positives: + The sushi bar is fabulous and top-notch. Sushi is super fresh and gorgeous. + My husband's steak was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. Very flavorful, and one of the best steaks I've tried in a long, long time. I'm not usually big on red meat, but I stole several bites. + My fish (I think it was opakapaka) with banana salsa and lemon grass was really tasty. + The drinks were great. + The breakfast bento box was interesting and a decent value ($7.50) for the amount of food in it. + You can watch the chef cook. + Friendly service. Negatives: - Dessert was a miss the night we tried it. We renamed Chocolate Burst "Chocolate Fizzle." It was heated and supposed to have warm fudge inside, but it was pretty dry. - The chicken chow mein was only so-so. The chicken was a bit fatty, the noodles uninspired. - It appears that for breakfast many diners (even those eating at the Aupaka Terrace) still use styrofoam. I'm not sure what's up with the excessive packaging. - Like many places in Kauai, it's expensive.

During our stay at the Marriott/Sonestra, we ate breakfast twice there and both times ordered the same thing: the breakfast bento.

The pudding was just a tiny bit greasy but the flavor was great and not overly sweet--I still ate the whole cup by myself in one quick sitting, yum! I would have loved more bananas in the pudding, but I did like how they were cut up into small pieces so the focus stayed on the pudding. Service was friendly and they had a whole tray of banana pudding ready to go. Free parking available all around the shopping plaza, conveniently located close to an ABC store and across from the famous Musubi Truck.

I got a banana matcha and a bagel sandwich while my friend got a banana bread and black coffee with coconut syrup. My portion was $21 for the matcha and the sandwich. I thought the matcha was decent! The banana flavor is a syrup and it reminds me of the banana candies. The matcha wasn't too milky. The bagel sandwich lacked flavor for me. I might just be too used to salt but I did find that the egg portion wasn't super flavorful. I did appreciate that the bagel was quite soft. Overall, it was alright! There is plenty of free parking in the area. The lines can get long even at 7 am on the week day.

The prices are very reasonable! We probably saved $3-10 off each plate coming from Maui. My dad got the LauLau Plate and said the meat was soft and moist and my mom NEVER annihilates her food and she literally ate every bite of her Steamed Fish which was Catfish today. It had this yummy soy or sesame sauce with some green onions and ginger on top. My Oxtail Soup with Rice was perfect for the cold rainy day. Delicious pieces of fall off the bone oxtail and I literally dumped all the cilantro and ginger in the hot broth. Mom and I had a bit of a fuzzy throat so we got the Calamansi Juice with Honey which was delicious! As you sip, you taste pieces of Calamansi and see swirls of seeds and calamansi skin. If you like pulp, you'd enjoy this refreshing drink. We ended the meal with 4 pieces of hot egg tarts! I'm surprised they had them because when I go to Oahu, there's some spots where you special order them on the weekends. Overall, a delicious local spot here in Lihue!

The Loco Moco plate was great. The gravy and beef patties were flavorful and the rice and mac salad were great as well. I get mine with sunny side up eggs and they were cooked perfectly. They give plenty of gravy on the dish so nothing is dry. Both versions of pancakes were large and the banana pancakes were the better of the two; they were very fluffy and had plenty of banana in the batter. The Ube were good as well. They also gave a lot of bacon with the meal, like 6-7 pieces. It's definitely a local stop in Lihue, and those are the places I prefer to visit. We would definitely return.

He was so friendly, so warm, and just one of those people who instantly makes you feel comfortable. You can tell how much love and passion goes into this shop, and it really shows in the way they treat every customer. The drinks were amazing -- seriously some of the best we had on the island. Everything tasted fresh, high-quality, and made with so much care. Pair that with the fun, happy vibe of the shop and it just made the whole stop feel special. It was sooo tasty, caramel and coconut creamy heaven. The coffee had great flavor and wasn't bitter or watered down. It was the perfect pick me up after landing in Kauai at 9:30am. We also tried the bagels, including the Jimmy Pesto on a rosemary bagel and the Brahvocado with added pesto cream cheese on an everything bagel. The bagels were fresh and had the perfect chew and crisp to them. The pesto cream cheese was full of flavor. There are indoor seating available and they also have a to-go window outside that you can pick up mobile orders if you're in a hurry. Parking is available behind the shop, it has signs letting you know it's parking for their shop. Definitely look forward to visiting again soon and trying a new drink option

Now what you see is their half-size portion of oxtail. I think I paid $25-30 after tax and tip. Something like that. But brah, even after a sunrise hike, my big back struggled to finish allll that. The taste was definitely solid. I will say I've had better oxtail soup in Oahu, even from Liliha. BUT no complaints, I'm glad I tried out tip top's! It was obviously a local favorite as the entire place was packed with straight up locals--don't think I saw one tourist in there.
