Stopped by again while getting car serviced at Reynolds GMC and while the food was great again, I wanted to highlight their service in this visit. My appt was at 1:30pm and I got to Yashima around 1:40pm. I didn't realize they closed at 2pm but I needed my fix so went in anyway. Not one mention of the time and never rushed me for my order. I knew what I wanted already and ordered almost immediately, but didn't get my food until about 1:50pm. Everything was still cooked to order and tasted great (lunch special with salmon teriyaki, tempura and sushi + an extra order of tako). I eat pretty fast normally and finished right around 2pm. I asked for the check when the server was asking me if I wanted anything else and mentioned that I saw they closed at 2pm and wanted to get out of their way. She was very appreciative but never once made me feel rushed or like I stayed too long. Anyway, I really appreciate the extra level of service and professionalism. July 1st/ 2026 6:02 PM 7:30 PM the singer started singing " horrible" Met friends for dinner. Our first time here. We parked in front. Plenty of Parking behind the restaurant too. Opened the dark door, very underwhelming! Small, stark white walls. No one to welcome you, our friend waved at us, so we proceeded to the table. Our waitress stood at the end of the table. We mentioned it was our first time and may we have sometime to look over the menu ? Ok and she left, she came back 30 seconds later, are you ready to order? NO the menu is huge and we need about 5 minutes please. One minute later she said OK what would you like to order ? My husband said, please can we have sometime to look over the menu I do not know yet. The waitress STOOD there staring at us waiting for us to decide what we want. My husband is on page 2 of the menu it is just so big you can't read it all in 30 seconds or one minute.! she wouldn't leave our friend. Finally looked at her and said just a few more minutes please and she just left.. she comes back and we asked for two separate checks before we ordered. I asked for my soup to go to the daughter and it came to me anyway I just gave it to the daughter instead.. the table area where I was sitting at was so sticky and dirty. It was gross one napkin and chopsticks. Never asked if we wanted more napkins or a fork or knife or anything else once we ordered, and our food was brought to us you never heard or seen her at our table again until we asked for our check & to go boxes as she was visiting customers at the sushi bar and very attentive to them. NOT a great first Impression.! When everyone was finished with their meal and needed two takeout boxes, we asked her for them she said OK but she really was interested in the people sitting at the sushi bar and hugged on them and talked to them and we never got our takeout boxes so then we waited 20 minutes 25 minutes comes and my husband gets up and goes to the owner and says can we have two takeout boxes please? Oh yeah sure so we get them we box up our food we asked for our checks. Another 20 minutes goes by. No check after waiting 30 minutes again we get up and ask for the check, you stand there and stare at us waiting to take our order but we never see you again once our food comes and you never finish what you're doing before you go to the next table if you can't multitask then don't do it please. When the food came, I was shocked at the size the tuna rolls they were so tiny. A snail is bigger. I was un impressed with the food. Nothing had any flavor to it. No salt wasabi that was on my plate was so small it was the size of a dime!!!!! and we love our wasabi! What a joke! The restaurant is so tiny and so loud and then they had a singer to celebrate their restaurant anniversary there which was beyond loud. Tables weren't full, but yet people were standing and waiting to be seated. That made no sense.. I am not a fan of TV's on the wall's at a restaurant. Sports bar's OK but not at a restaurant specifically when there is NO Sound. If you are a local and you come to this restaurant often, then the female waitress will love you! If you're new to the restaurant, she'll stare at you and until you order food and then ignore you once your food is handed to you. We will Never be back? Never ever again you couldn't pay me to come back to this restaurant ..! Do I recommend this restaurant in Covina absolutely not no way know how not even if it was free.!!!!! What was good about our experience, the beer, the company and the fact that we left.! Yay.!!!! FYI: my to box is in the trashcan. Once the drink and appetizer order is taken, Please do not approach a table until the menus are set down. Please clean your menu's and tables. Stopped by Yashima Japanese Restaurant and honestly this is one of those solid local spots you're glad you found. Definitely a bit of a hole in the wall, but that's part of the charm. This is a cute little hole in the wall for some traditional and classic Japanese sushi. It contains a small sushi bar area with few tables filled with wooden decor. We opted for a chirashi gold and a mix of various different nigiri sushi. The fish was really fresh but I prefer my rice less mushy and with a tad more vinegar. I've been coming to Yashima since I was a little kid and it truly is a small hidden gem in Covina. I've always wanted to gatekeep this spot, but it truly is a spot that deserves recognition! The owner Sachiko is the sweetest lady ever and it hurts my heart that she is retiring and ownership is changing. But she has been here for about 40 years, so she deserves the retirement. The sushi and food is always such great quality and everything is truly super fresh. I love how they also offer plate combinations on their menu if you want to try a little bit of everything. We waited about 25 minutes for the first roll to come out followed by the edamame. Please note it was only us 2 plus another couple. About 45 minutes into our dinner we're still waiting for the other rolls and then the crowd starts rolling in. The uni is amazing!!! Worth the market place price. We came as a party of 4, and arrived at a very unassuming quiet strip mall. We were a bit concerned when we parked in the back. (Lots of parking andn street parking by the way). When we walked in, it seemed pleasant and the place was popping. We got a very small menu, but our eyes were bigger than our stomach and we ordered way more than we could finish. Chirashi bowl was delicious, the nigiri was soft, the cut rolls were not rolled too tight, but flavor was there. I wish the rolls were packed a little more tightly because some of the innards fell apart after picking it up and dipping it. The tempura was nicely fried. The combo I got was teriyaki chicken along with a dynamite scallop. I would prob pass on the scallop, as it was mostly zucchinis and onions. It came with salad, soup and Mac salad. We have been dining at Yashima for 35+ years and enjoyed supporting Sachiko, Masa, and Hideo. The food was consistently excellent and authentic and reminded us of the food from our childhood. We were sorry to learn that Sachiko and Masa retired but wish them well. The new owners have retained most of the previous dishes and, for the most part, kept the taste the same. Sushi chef Hideo continues to consistently make excellent sushi and uses the freshest seafood. They've made improvements to the decor, menus, and signage that have enhanced the restaurant. The reason for the 4-star rating is primarily because of the poor exhaust system in the kitchen and the overly-sweetened sauce used in the donburi dishes. While eating there the other night, the dining room began to fill up with smoke, a strong fish odor permeated the room, and I couldn't stop coughing. Fortunately, we were finished eating and were able to make a quick exit to escape the thick smoke that engulfed the room. I've ordered donburi dishes in the past but won't be continuing because the sauce is too sweet and it adds nothing to the flavor of the food. Hopefully, something can be done to make the exhaust system more efficient. This would greatly improve an otherwise good restaurant that serves good food. read more

I stopped by this place to have dinner on Friday night before going to the Laugh Factory. Arrived around 7 pm and luckily got seated right away as there are 2 tables open. Placed an order for some sushi, a hand roll and 2 cut rolls. Also ordered a large Sapporo and a small hot sake. The servers were very attentive and even said that I can request for the sake to be more warmed up if it wasn't hot enough. Placed the order quickly as I'm trying to catch a 7:30 show. After the order was placed, about half the sake and half the beer were finished, the food still did not come out yet. One of the server noticed we waited a long time so gave some miso soup. Then 30 mins or so later the food finally came out little by little. The sushi tasted very fresh and the cut rolls had good amount of filling and the hand roll was pretty big. Unfortunately didn't get to take pictures as I was rushing to finish the food so I can catch the show. The beer and hot sake were a good complement to the sushi! This restaurant had a small lot in the back which is shared with a few other businesses. It's a small restaurant but there were a good amount of tables and also tvs to keep you entertained while you dined. I will come back to try the other sushi, but will have to make sure to give myself enough time as the service is slow during prime dinner time. read more

There were only two of us, so they sat us at the bar, when there was a whole table for 4 available (2 tables put together that could easily be separated), but we didn't mind the bar. The servers were attentive in the beginning, asking if we were ready to order, and were attentive every time we had to ask for things, but some items shouldn't needed to be asked for like soy sauce plate and small plates to eat on for the sushi. We ordered the Nabeyaki udon (their only saving grace and was delicious, soft shell crab roll, salmon sashimi that was fresh but cut too thick and chewy, seaweed salad, and a dragon roll that never came and we had to cancel it. I immediately ordered my favorite, the Chirashi Bowl, and I can confidently say it tastes the same, or maybe even better, than before! The rice was perfectly seasoned and the fish was exceptionally fresh. I noticed the proportion of the fish seems slightly more generous, which is a fantastic upgrade. Got the baked mussels and those were really good with nice mayo style topping baked on. Also ordered the yellowtail carpaccio and it was good also. Had a nice mix of ponzu sauce and white onions and jalepno if you opt for spicy. Their dynamite was good as well as it had more seafood than the typical ones at other places. We try to order something different each time we come, and today was no exception. For lunch they offer 2 or 3 choice bento boxes, so I tried the Teriyaki Salmon and Mixed Tempura (so good and so much food!). We ordered some appetizers, Shishito Tempura and the Fire Crunch (my favorite, but they typically forget to add the jalapeño and sriracha Mayo drizzle... but it's still so good). Very authentic Japanese restaurant experience! We had a party of 8 so it was a bit of a wait but the service was fast and very friendly! Plenty of parking in the back. The wait took about 40 minutes but it is a small restaurant so if you had parties of 2-4, you will be seated pretty quickly. Came here on a Saturday night with a reservation for 7Pm for a group of 7. Saw the good reviews so wanted to give it a try. When we arrived we parked in the parking lot behind the restaurant and came through the back entrance. When we got in it was packed, and stuffy. We were taken to our table and given some time to read over the menu. They only had 1 so it was difficult for a party of 7 to use. After we ordered we waited and waited, and took a while for even water to come. It took about 40 minutes for the soups and salads to arrived, part of the combos. Then another 15-20 minutes for the first main dishes to come. The charashi bowls that we ordered came last and took that one about an hour to arrive although usually those are the quicker dishes to arrive. We ordered some rolls, charashi bowls, baked scallop roll, udon, tempura, and a salmon collar. Food was alright. Honestly would have been a better experience if the food was spread out in arrival as we were quite hungry waiting. Additionally, we noticed that many tables around us who ordered after we're getting served quicker (multiple dishes) than our table. The servers barely came over even to refill waters. All in all, it took a really long time. So one think to know is that they're pretty understaffed so keep that in mind. The restaurant was nice, but quite crowded and a bit cramped. Eventually they opened the door for more air to come in and then it cooled off, but it was quite stuffy for most of the meal.
