The man who was on site that day was nice but not helpful. In emailing Dyan later, I wrote that perhaps we should have come when she was there, because she might know the memo books better, and could point us in the right direction to find an upholstery fabric in a lavender or lilac color. Her response was that "Lavender and lilac are not popular in today's fabric industry, but we do have a selection of white upholstery fabrics." First of all, she's wrong. Mills and fabric houses offer plenty of options in lavender, lilac, and other shades of light purple. Just look at Kravet's, Robert Allen's, or any other to-the-trade website. I worked in that industry for 20 years. Second, that wasn't what I asked. I asked for her help, and I was told the color I was seeking wasn't popular and I could try a white fabric. (Of course you have white fabric!) This was not helpful, and to be told that what I was looking for is not popular is borderline rude. Her response put me off so much that I've delayed the project for a year. I'm now beginning the process with another upholstery shop and am reminded of my negative experience with Dyan at Dan's. Maybe if you get a better salesperson, you'll have a better experience. But I'll never recommend Dan's.

I sent her a few inspiration pictures, and when I went to pick out fabric, she already had narrowed down the samples for us, which streamlined the selection process. A few weeks later Aby let us know our bench was ready. It was exactly what I wanted, and the fabric had the perfect texture and color. I'm sure I could have bought a new bench for the price of the reupholstering, but I don't think I can find one that's custom made exactly as I want.

It was either buy a new couch or get this one restuffed. I chose the latter because: 1. It's cheaper. 2. The frame and fabric are still in great shape. Mr. Kwong does really high-quality work, and at a fair price. He knew instantly what the issue with my old cushions was, what to restuff my couch cushions with, and got the job done in a week. I had these custom MCM chairs from the 1950's that I had worked on for quite a while but couldn't do the upholstery myself. It was hard finding a competitive price around the Bay Area but man these guys are an insane deal. All of these chairs were done in real leather from piping to side trims, every chair was consistent and completely redone in only 4 DAYS! I expected a week or maybe 2 at minimum but they really set the standard. If you're hesitant to find someone to do your upholstery, don't be, just go here it's worth it.

We tried to redo it ourselves, but we made it worse. So we decided to turn to experts and brought the table into John at Ciarlo Brothers. These guys are fantastic, the table that they returned looked better than the Berkeley Mills original (and that says a lot as they were a pretty great shop). True artists at refinishing!
