Mixed reviews from our experience. Overall, we had a fine time and everything was just okay. The chips and salsa are fantastic. I wanted to go here for pozole and found it to be a little flat. I've had pozole with more "zing" and dimension. I'm no pozole expert but I think this was pretty mediocre. The wife ordered more tex-mex style items like tacos and a burrito with rice and beans and, just like other reviewers have commented they were very average or below. Bland, afterthought, un-loved ground beef like it's from a school cafeteria. The spanish rice might as well have been from a box but the refried beans are very good. The waiter was pretty good but he omitted part of my order and then struck up a conversation with some regulars that came in for about 20 minutes and didn't check on us. I might go back if I don't find somewhere else that has pozole. read more

Came here for dinner on a recommendation. Place was pretty busy when I arrived and the crowd appeared to be all smiles both directions. I got my seat and although busy I waited almost 10 minutes before I got a menu. After I ordered a drink and food,another lengthy wait occured. My chips and salsa arrived and it was good. Later my drink order was retaken since it was forgotten. My food and drink finally arrived. The margarita s are served in a 1/3 size mason jar with a grip. The alcohol content was low even for a house blend. I expected more for $6. My food...the tacos were kid sized and the burrito was bland with no kick or juices. I have been going to this restaurant for 8+ years, I have consistently had great service and the food has been very good! They expanded to add more seating and a bar area, as well as a large room for big groups. The owner and his mother and family members are always so helpful and welcoming. Returned again, for the 5th time! Highly suggest getting the gorditas! Easily the best and truest Mexican food in Springfield. I got the chimichanga, steak taco, and shredded beef burrito. All had very tender and moist ingredients. The portion sizes were very fair and the sides were pretty standard in all regards. The salsa was good but is arguably less flavorful then el puente. Owned and operated by Jesus and his mother Maria Perches. Maria's delicious authentic recipes are from Durango and Chihuahua Mexico. Tortillas and chips are made in house daily. My hubby ordered the pork chili Verde with refried beans, Mexican rice and fresh corn tortillas.The chili Verde was very tasty and spicy, the pork was tender-this dish was delicious. I ordered the Friday special, chili Relleno, refried beans and Mexican rice. I also ordered a cup of Albondigas which is one of my favorite (Mexican meatball-soup) the soup was absolutely delicious one of the best I've had in a long,long time. The soup beef broth looks almost clear with large chunks of; celery onion, potato, carrots and a tender and tasty meat ball. Chili Relleno- poblano pepper stuffed with Monterey Jack or Queso Asadero, lightly battered and fried golden brown, served without sauce- it was absolutely delicious. Service was excellent and very friendly. Family owned and managed and they bring several dishes to the area not found in other Mexican Restaurants. Their beef tacos are excellent and chicken quesadilla's are a full meal. They try to make what you want so they accommodated me with a smaller quesadilla that allowed me to eat a taco with it. Very customer focused and ready to help! Prices are very reasonable and food was quick. We enjoyed and will return often. I cannot say enough good about my experience at this restaurant. First, I will start by saying the staff was excellent! They were all so friendly, had smiles on their faces, looked like they enjoyed working together, and was very attentive to my wants. Secondly, the food I ordered was delicious! I had enchiladas verde and the verde sauce was so flavorful with a spicy kick which you can't find in many places because they tone it down so much. Sat night visit. Clean and cozy cafe. Seated promptly. Menus chips salsa brought quickly. Waitress was pleasant and attentive. Numerous selections with some weekend only dishes that were mostly fish/shrimp and they sounded good but did not try. Frozen margarita special was a large one for the price. Apparently have a good selection of local beer. I had coke. Food looked like standard Mexican. Beans were extra creamy and flavorful. If you want actual beans then maybe not for you. Rice was standard with usual Mexican rice flavor. Tamale was good and spicy and burrito had nice flavors as well. Chips good, salsa was good/ not very spicy but that is a subjective thing Sopapillas we're good with ample honey. All food arrived hot and promptly. If i could have one star I would. There was a freaking fly in my tacos. Not to mention the smell of the restaurant was horrible. It smelled like rotten food, almost unbearable. Plus we waited 15 minutes for just our drinks and then for 45 minutes for our food (while being the only people there ) which was only a plate of 3 fish tacos for me and regular ole nachos for my boyfriend. My fish tacos tasted so nasty I took one bite an spit it out and didn't finish touch anything else. & the tacos Truthfully and honestly, they smelt like dirty old fishy lady bits if im being blatant. And the nachos weren't even warmed. Jsut sprinkled with shredded cheese topped with coke dry plain hamburger and then drizzled with chunky barely warm nacho cheese. He didn't even try a bite. We asked for the check and just paid it and left. It was so bad there was no sense in even arguing with them. We wanted out of this foul place as quickly as possible. This is hands down the best place to go in town for lunch or dinner. Everyone is always treated like family because it is locally owned family restaurant. Service is perfect and swift. Plenty of seating in a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of parking. We have tried everything on the menu and all of the dishes are great. The plates are wonderfully sized with the coldest beer on tap. The pulled pork taco was the best thing we ordered. The pork was incredibly tender and tasty. I couldn't stop picking it out to eat on its own. The rest of our meal was just ok. The tilapia fish tacos looked good but had a strong fishy smell, something I've never encountered in a fish taco before. Some of our green salsa was still frozen. We were passing through on our way back from Tablerock Lake and I was craving tacos. (What's new?? I know, right.) and while getting gas my fiance googled "Best Tacos in Springfield" and this place came up so we GPS'd to it. I am quite glad he knows me well enough to know the kind of tacos I want and wasn't suggesting that we stop at Taco Bell...... My only con was that the guacamole was lacking any flavor at all - but I cleared that up with some hot sauce from the table. Chips were fresh. Everything was spicy, just how I like it. Their steak and fish tacos were delicious and even though they look like street taco size, they are very filling. Three was too much for me. My fiance's Chico's Taquitos were delicious and the way they were served was definitely authentic. (In soup with rice). I ordered a spicy shrimp soup, and it took me two full meals to finish it all - and it cleared out my sinuses. BONUS! This might be the best Mexican restaurant in Springfield. Seriously, I only go somewhere else if the line is out the door and I'm on a time crunch. I've discovered late lunchtime is the ideal sweet spot to get a table, and I've been here a few times since. Their tamales are out of this world ($1 on Thursdays) and the tacos are amazing ($1 on Tuesdays). I recommend the pork on both, but honestly, it's personal preference. The salsa is top notch! Very fresh and refreshing at the same time. You cannot beat the prices and the staff is very friendly. Great authentic mexican. It looks like taco Tuesday is the time to go. Can't beat $1 tacos. I ordered the Guisado de Barbacoa- it was good but a little too much on the spicy side. My husband ordered several different tacos which he really enjoyed. My 5 year old ate all of her enchilada (which was a FIRST). That speaks for itself! The owner saw my daughter was getting fidgety waiting for her food and told us he told them to get it out here asap. He brought out her plate before ours and also brought two spoons incase she was to drop one of them. Very, very personable man and i loved how he worked right alongside his employees. The only cons were the limited space. They were very busy and it was a very tiny establishment so people were packed in there like sardines. I wish it had been a bit cleaner as well. Magnífico! What an amazing little place. Mexican is my favorite cuisine. To have found this little gem is nothing more than the ultimate in satisfaction. Having been a child living in the back alleys of Los Angeles and being of Mexican descent, this experience was a bit subjective and I am somewhat partial to these specifics flavors. Subjective or not, Perches does not offer the typical chili and cheese topped Tex-Mex you might find at the local 'villa' down the road. This is pure, simple, clean, truly authentic Mexican. Offering breakfast at times only lends to its value. Real chilaquiles, real breakfast fares like beef with eggs. I'm salivating at a harsh pace at this moment! Perches prepares fresh tortillas on-site. You are greeted with a rather bulky tortilla maker right in the lobby. What a difference these little corn beauties make. Did I mention the fresh homemade menudo, and yes, dare I say pozole on the weekends? Dios mio. You will also find beer and spices, candies and other delicacies as part of the experience... and there for purchase as well. The place is small and cramped, but not uncomfortable. This makes it all the better for me. Truly authentic. Perches does not feel like it is competing with the bowl of chips and salsa down the road; Perches is actually bringing you a real experience, and one, if you let it, that will take you well past the unguarded borders of Southern Texas. I'm only giving four stars here for the strangest reason you will probably see at Yelp. Too realistic; is that even a thing? This place truly is awesome but is true down-home Mexican style. None of this Americanized stuff, that I've experienced. If you like this style, that's terrific. When I was a kid, Grandma Figueroa would make food like this when she stayed with my best friend's family next door. It's great, but maybe a little bit of tempering for the local populace wouldn't be such a bad thing. Their style certainly hasn't hurt with the Hispanic population, which the place is liberally sprinkled with whenever I go there. I have been coming here ever since they opened. What more can I say they have some amazing street tacos and even better is the taco Tuesday specials. The carnitas burrito add rice beans and smothered with queso is to die for and I dare you to try and eat all of it. The red hot sauce adds a very nice heat to any dish as well as the salsa verde. I have watched it grow for a single store front with 4 tables to three spaces they occupy now. I have gotten to know the owners in that time and they are great folks who who work hard and have made a success out of serving great food at a good price. What a concept! Taco Tuesday is always lined up out the door. I am a big fan of dining local as is the owners Jesus Perches and we always compare notes on other restaurants in town. He is a great guy other than being a Broncos fan. I am really happy to have watched this business grow to what it is today. Heard good things about this place from a couple of locals and found it well worth the extra drive. Taco Tuesday gets a lot of PR in Yelp reviews but also apparently big crowds. Imagine our happiness to find out their Thursday special of the day was $1 tamales! My daughter and I came for a late lunch so we only ordered a couple each but they were more than enough! Two of them filled the plate. The corn masa in the pork tamales was fantastic--really the best we'd ever had. Sometimes the masa in tamales is a bit dry--but not at Perches. It was clearly fresh and moist. Tamales are her favorite and we both polished them off in no time. An added bonus for us was their salsa and chips. She's not big on heat and the salsa was perfect for her, with more tomato than peppers flavor. Wish we had more room to have another tamale but I am already looking forward to coming back for more. The food was very good. I wasn't too thrilled with their steak tacos. They were decent sized, but only one corn tortilla per taco, (they should use 2), and the texture and flavor of the steak was ok, just not what I'm used to back home in Chicago, Chicago Heights to be exact. A lot of Mexican stores and restaurants there. You know it's going to be good when most of the employees don't speak English. The tamales were really good. I will definitely be going back. I look forward to trying their menudo. Something most places back home only made on Sundays. I do hope the rest of their menu is as good as the few items I've had so far.
