They were involved in a partial remodel and the work left a lot to be desired - we had to hire someone to come back through and fix all the cosmetic issues and fix functional issues with sinks. Additionally there were numerous issues with the way they installed a tankless water heater and other companies refused to service the unit. Had to threaten them to remedy the situation and only then did they send out a tech who kept saying "I don't see why they didn't do this in the first place." We were incredibly disappointed by the work from Touchstone Plumbing. Hiring them resulted in water damage, an unusable shower, possible mold, and what will likely cost us thousands of dollars and countless hours of stress. We hired them and they sent "one of their best guys" to install new handles to our shower and tighten everything up. The next morning while showering the middle handle wasn't turning the water fully into 'shower mode,' and after a few right turns popped off mid shower and water poured out and into our wall for a few seconds. I've already dealt with mold in a past apartment and have had health problems because of it. This is the first home I've owned and have been so careful with. We called the next day after the handle popped off and they came by and agreed it wasn't done right. We asked for their insurance and he said they'd get back to us. They eventually gave us contact info to their insurance after weeks of requesting it. The remediation guys their insurance recommended ($100 out of pocket) said it wasn't good, agreed there was water back there, but it 'wasn't catastrophic enough for insurance to cover.' We now have spent countless hours trying to figure out what to do, and it's clear we'll have to remediate ourselves. We've been running a fan and a dehumidifier for over a month and recently scoped back there and the drywall behind the tub is still soaked. They have yet to reach back out or refund us for the original cost or anything. I'm truly disappointed, and cannot recommend them in any capacity. read more

I'm so disappointed. I was understanding when they didn't show up as planned, and didn't call me back. I waited then called again. The plumber that did the job was terrific. He was polite, he snaked the drain and was in and out of here in less than 20 minutes. It was the shock of the bill for $150 that bowled me over. Last summer, I purchased a new commode for my downstairs bathroom, from Home Depot. They set me up with ARS Plumbing to install the commode, and when I saw they were a 'subcontractor' I called Touchstone Plumbing -- less than 5 miles from my home, and the good folks at this family owned business offered to install the commode for a full $50 less than ARS Plumbing, who said they would rather not have my business at all, than install for the same price. I've had no trouble at all with the commode. It works perfectly. TODAY Touchstone came out to replace my garbage disposal and they were done in less than one hour! The price was $210 which seemed high to me, $140 to remove, and replace with no garbage disposal. I did get the replacement, for $210, and they are graciously billing me so I am able to pay in installments. If you want superior service, and you prefer to use Austin owned businesses, may I suggest you give the good people at Touchstone Plumbing your plumbing job. They do good work, and did not seem to mind my tears at the unexpected cost, and are working to help me pay -- as mentioned -- in installments. read more

This is simple. The service they provided was great. The two plumbers who came to my house worked very timely, explained the job to me and did good work. When I received my invoice, the cartridge required to fix my tub was priced at literally twice the amount that I could have purchased it myself from Lowe's or Home Depot. When I called to inquire about this, the person who took my call acted as if this was the most normal thing on the planet. She told me that, "of course our price is more, that's how we make money." When I said that I assumed you mad money off labor, she told me, "no way." Having worked with enough contractors in the past to know that no company upcharges on materials from retailers like Home Depot who already upcharge the wholesale price from the manufacturer. So if you want to be charged double for any potential materials you might need to get the job done, go ahead and give these folks a call. read more

So these guys, care nothing for quality --spend hours installing water lines and not having the right parts for almost everything. A bill for two thousand dollars is what they want for lack of project managerial experience. So after asking for an itemized invoice for "parts" that cost over $2000, (also the plumber disappeared at McCoys for two hours) plus all the smoke breaks Keith took on TOP of their office calling him incessantly--which of course they billed us for! I needed these guys in a fix and someone from Touchstone was here first thing in the morning. He was really good about explaining things and telling me all of my options. Nice guy too. Got the job done quickly and efficiently. There was one step that would have added a couple hours, had to do with an area that needed some caulking and cement, and he gave me the choice of doing it myself to save money. I said I could do it and he told me exactly what to do! End cost was not too expensive, not too cheap. Middle of the road I would say. We had Touchstone out again today. Called at 9:30am with a water heater that some lesser plumber had installed with braided rubber hoses, one of which sprung a leak and killed--via flooding--an otherwise perfectly good 6-year-old water heater and a nice water heater closet. We asked them to bring a water heater ASAP and get us hot water! By around 2pm, we had hot water coming out of a new, very nice water heater. Braided rubber lines were gone, a water heater pan had materialized, and after a nice, long bath, I'm going to sleep good, knowing this one isn't going to flood my house. Zach Touchstone is a third generation plumber in this family owned business and one of the rare Austin natives. The service from he and Larry was provided at the time expected, was performed quickly and economically, and came with advice of what to do until and after the thaw comes. I have used Touchstone Plumbing for at least 10 years for my plumbing needs, because they are cheap and my plumbing needs have been simple. After recent experiences, I won't use them any more. I called them to replace a spray head on a kitchen sink. I asked for the technician to explain to my tenant what he did, because generally the tenant will troubleshoot when there is a problem and not call if it is something simple he can fix. The technician did everything wrong: he left without talking to the tenant and the spray head fell off two weeks later. I called back, explained again to the dispatcher "please have the technician communicate with the tenant". Not only did that not happen, but the cold water side did not work after the technician left. Third time: "please communicate with tenant"-fix it right! No. Technician texted "all good" to tenant, but this time the hot did not work. Tenant was able to restore hot water flow this time and our frustration ended there. Maybe. I wrote to the owner to alert him to this problem with poor quality work and poor communication within his work force, and asked him if there was an explanation. No reply. read more

Just delivered an order of alcohol to this company, and had to manually enter the person's identification. They called the company that I work for to tell them that the alcohol that I left with them was not delivered. At our company we got a base pay, and it's not very much. They didn't even bother to tip-but they had the gall to call the company and let them know that the alcohol was not delivered. We had a plumbing emergency at work and I called a ton of companies and independent plumbers but, wasn't able to get anyone seeing it was the Friday of Memorial Weekend. Also, everyone was backed up for weeks and the water seeping through the walls couldn't wait. I contacted some contractors who had helped us in the past and they found this company to come out that day to at least assess the situation and shut the water off to the area. It was 3:00 p.m. when they showed up which was just two hours after the call. They were short handed so, I really appreciated it. The plumber cut into the wall and found there were 3 screws that were in the pipe. Left over from our old tenant hanging a rack on the wall and over time the sewage had eaten through the screws and they were now leaking. YUCK! He went out to the street and found the shut off valve and shut it off before he did the work and then turned off the water in the bathroom above and returned on the main so, our tenant could use their restroom. He said he would be back next week to fix the problem. They came back out on a Wednesday and he quickly fixed the issue and explained what he did in terms that I could understand. From start to finish this company gave amazing customer service from the lady on the phone to the actual plumber. I am very grateful that this company was able to help me out and the pricing was very fair considering the emergency situation I was in. Touchstone came out to bid a remodel for me. The guy refused to speculate as to even a ballpark figure, but said he could put together a bid in a week. That was more than a month ago. Every time I called their office I was told the bid information must be in the guy's truck. I still haven't heard back. Would have saved a lot of my time if they'd simply said they didn't want the work. I'm surprised to see several negative reviews, since my experience with Touchstone has been the best. Perhaps it's a matter of who the actual plumber is. Ask for Emmett. He's "my personal plumber" and I've been happy with him for at least 20 years. Here's an example. I am friends with an intellectually disabled man who recently moved into a condo. Within days of moving in, the knob that controlled the shower broke. My friend called me and I called Emmett. He came out quickly and fixed the problem. I called to ask the charge? He simply said "no charge--I was glad to give the guy a break." Will your repairs be free? Of course not. But when you're dealing with Emmett, you know you're dealing with a class act. read more

Good luck trying to get a hold of them. They don't answer the phone, nor do they return calls if you leave a message. After attempting to get them to communicate with me for two days, I finally spoke to the receptionist who told me the earliest they could get to me was in four to five days. I explained that I could not use my kitchen sink or dishwasher at all and needed a plumber much sooner. Her reply was the same--four to five days. I hung up, called Roto-Rooter and had a plumber at my house in an hour. read more

Our hot water heater went out and Touchstone came out and replaced the thermostat and recommended replacement. The fix lasted 1 day so we located a new water heater and called Touchstone back. The dispatcher said they would only charge us for installation of the new heater and would pick up our new heater for free. When Touchstone arrived they had 2 plumbers and therefore charged us $130 / hour labor. Their bill came to $750 for installing the water heater and included charges for the original call and for picking up our new water heater in spite of what we had been told. I have a friend in California who is a Master Plumber and he told me that a water heater replacement should never cost more than $400. And that is with California prices which are more expensive than Texas prices. We contacted Touchstone and asked for a refund for the charges for picking up the water heater and the initial call but they have not responded to our calls and emails. I do not recommend using Touchstone. They charge the maximum they can for any work they perform and the don't keep their word. They may send out 2 plumbers at a time to charge a higher hourly rate. They don't respond to complaints either. Avoid Touchstone and save money by using a better plumber! read more

Since my first review in 2008, I have had Touchstone out about 4-5 times. Everything from a remodeled kitchen, bathroom upgrades, to leaky hose-bibs, they have always handled each job quickly and reasonably priced. These are honest, down-to-earth folks that do quality work. read more

I've used Touchstone twice now. The first time was for a broken seal. They came out the same day and had it fixed quickly. I think that was $110. The next time was for a different bathroom toilet. Another plumber had explained that the fix was going to be time consuming and costly, and involve removing the tile in the bathroom around the toilet base. Touchstone's guy came out the following day and had it fixed in about an hour. It took a bit of welding and some plastic bolts were replaced with steel ones. I think this ran around $190. A few days later the toilet began to run so I called back. They were out the same day and had it fixed in less than 30mins at no additional charge. The office called back the next day to make sure everything went well. I think these guys are good ole' boys who get the job done well at a fair price. read more

CUSTOMER BEWARE - OVERBILLED: In the process of wrapping up a project, Keith broke a part and had to go to the shop to get a replacement. He said he would not charge for the time to get the part since he was the one who broke it. He was gone for about 45 minutes, returned, quickly wrapped up the project and went to write up the invoice. When handed the final bill, he charged 2.5 hours for what should have been about 1.5 hours of work. When I questioned the invoice, he said that there was an added 30 minute travel fee to get to the job - which I pointed out was never mentioned in my detailed call with the office or when I reconfirmed costs with him when setting up the appointment. His math never added up -- I should have continued to argue the bill but I was so stunned by the sudden "added fee" and blatant dishonesty -- it was just awkward. Keith totally took advantage and knows it. What a shame! I so wanted Touchstone to be my go-to plumber -- on-time, efficient, personable and good work. BUT PADDED THE BILL! read more

Called Touchstone because my water heater had gone bad. They came out same day and replaced it. The price was right and the plumbers were very polite and knowledgeable. They told me how to care for the new water heater, cleaned up the mess the old one had made, and completed the job very quickly. Definitely recommend Touchstone. read more

I do not recommend Touchstone. I called them to install a new gas oven. The plumber showed up with no supplies for the install. He said he wasn't told he would need supplies for an oven install. He did unscrew the gas pipe in the kitchen and screwed in a shorter one so the oven would fit closer to the wall. He was gone within 14 minutes. We ended up installing the oven ourselves after two trips to Lowes for parts and a lot of time and frustration. Then Touchstone billed me for an hour of work. I contacted Touchstone and asked if they would reduce the charges since they didn't do the job I hired them to do when I agreed to the hour minimum charge. They told me they would not reduce the bill. We will not be using Touchstone Plumbing again. read more

I watched the entire time and they were nice enough to explain the connections and basic instructions. I had a lot of other quotes more than $100 over these guys... Our gas was disconnected and the gas company left us a note that we needed a plumber to make a repair before our gas would be turned on again. Touchstone resolved the issue by making numerous phone calls. The gas company made all the repairs and Touchstone did not bill us even thought they made numerous phone calls and even one trip to our house. This was the worst experience I have ever had. I had John put in a tankless hot water heater and it has never worked. It takes 10 minutes for the water to warm up enough to take a shower and it is on the highest setting (140), and it often will only last 3-4 minutes. I have tried to get them to come to repair it and all you get is the run around. This last time I had to call every day for 10 days and was told that I would get a response as soon as John "came in the door", was told that they would come out on a Friday and then on Friday was called and told that Clarke Kent plumbing handles all tankless warranty work. It is now Tuesday. Clarke Kent is here and of course labor is not included and I am out at least 195.00 (no fault of Clarke Kent). Stay away from this company... they do not stand behind their product or honor their warranty, their word or work. read more

Touchstone was the company that could get to the job the quickest in the middle of August. They "fixed" the issue with my water heater in 3 minutes and charged me $94.50. A few days later, we were having the same issues with the water heater. I called them the next week, they came back out quickly. The water heater is in the attic, and the attic door is hard to reach and pull down without a step-ladder. I provided a step-ladder for them to use, but the plumber decided not to use it, saying, "I can do it!" As he brought the stairs down, he cracked the wood of the staircase door in two places. They fixed the water heater this time. They complained often to me about how hot it was in my attic while working on the water heater. At the end, I asked them what they were going to do about the cracked attic door. The plumber and I both took pictures. I followed up with a call to the office that afternoon. The plumber had already told the office what had happened. The company still has done nothing to fix my attic door, and it's October. I have called 4-5 times in the last two months. Each time the receptionist Susan tells me that the complaint is on the owner's desk, and she'll try to have him call me that afternoon. He never has called. I owe them $14 for a new part of which I threatened not to pay if I don't get reimbursed for the broken door. Still nothing. Poor customer service, and not really that good at plumbing. read more
