Since I couldn't choose one, I decided on the mixed grill plate. Kafta, taouk, beef kabobs, hummus, tabouli and a side of garlic sauce. The burger is made with Wagu beef and was cooked perfect. It was everything it should have been. The mixed grill was nothing that I would have expected to find in Bastrop. The taste, the portions and just the offering of menu items that was not the usual that is easily found in this town. The garlic sauce was perfect to put over the meat. I did wish I had a little more and should have asked for a side. The hummus was fresh, and the portion size of that and the meal was extremely filling. We were celebrating a birthday, and I needed to know whether I could bring my own food since I cannot safely eat food prepared in a kitchen where there is a significant risk of gluten cross-contamination. We were told that bringing my own food would be okay. When we arrived, everyone sat down, and I began eating my salad. The manager, Michelle, came over and told me that I could not eat my own food there. I explained that I have celiac disease and cannot safely eat anything from the restaurant. She repeatedly told me that they take precautions for people with celiac disease. I tried to explain that, in a kitchen where flour is being used, there are serious cross-contact concerns, and I was not comfortable risking my health. After going back and forth, she eventually said, "I'll allow it this time." The way this situation was handled was incredibly upsetting. Michelle needs to educate herself much more thoroughly about celiac disease. This is not simply a dietary preference or an allergy where someone can necessarily "take precautions" and make a kitchen completely safe. Flour can become airborne, settle on surfaces, and create cross-contact risks. For someone with celiac disease, even small amounts of gluten can cause harm. What made this even more upsetting is that I am pregnant and have other significant dietary and medical considerations. I am not willing to gamble with my health or my baby's health just to eat at a restaurant. I ended up crying in the bathroom because of the way I was treated and the things that were said to me. I have never had an issue bringing my own food somewhere when I have explained my medical situation beforehand. This could have been handled with kindness and understanding. Instead, I was made to feel embarrassed and unwelcome after we had specifically called ahead and received permission. I sincerely hope the restaurant takes this opportunity to educate its staff about celiac disease, gluten cross-contact, and how to respectfully accommodate guests with serious medical dietary restrictions. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I will not be returning.
