As mentioned numerous times already, they are highly inconvenienced providing service to "newcomers", The food is stuff you can make at home, nothing special. This place is beyond cliquish and new faces are ignored and lucky to be served I walked out after 15 minutes of sitting at the bar and being ignored. Owners might want to consider every newcomer might turn into a regular and return plus bring more customers. Clearly they don't need the business. read more

Townsend was a great spot to grab a cheap lunch. I got a spicy chicken wrap special for about $10. It included run of the mill chicken tenders with shredded cheddar, tomato, and lettuce in a flour tortilla wrap and came with a bag of chips. Nothing fancy but certainly did satisfy. My wife got a hamburger club - one layer burger the other layer BLT. It was a pretty big sandwich! The French fries were very potatoey, in a good way. I loved the onion rings featuring a thick batter. The vibe is local pub with decor such as street signs. Nice and homey. Do not come by if you want something fancy but do try Townsend out if you want comfort food in a comfortable atmosphere. read more

We had recently had an exhaustive mountain bike ride on a perfect Fall day at Pearl Hill and were looking for a place to relax and have lunch. Townsend House seemed to be close, with a decent menu and outdoor seating - and beer. Well, claims to the contrary (not sure where the info came from), they had no outdoor seating. But we had made our choice, and they were going to have to deal with seven sweaty guys. I must admit, we got off to a bad start. They sat us at large table in the back, and promptly forgot us. One of us asked for a beer menu - forgotten. I had to get up and inquire of the staff. We waited a long time just to get silverware and napkins. Then we waited more for the wait person to take our drink order. They only had two beers on tap, the rest in bottles. One of the tap beers was Shipyard Pumpkin, and boy was it good after a tough ride. We then waited some more and I noticed that one of the two (only two!) wait staff was bussing a table in the bar area. Weren't there any other wait staff? It was lunch time on a Saturday, one would think they would be more prepared, though there seemed to be more people in the bar than in the dining area. Waited some more after we ordered our meals for someone to bring water. Whew! Finally to the food. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen, I assure you. I had a cheeseburger basket with an additional side of onion rings. I love onion rings - good onion rings. And they had them, maybe the best I have had in a long while. Light and crispy on the outside. Yum! The burger and fries were also good. Basic fare, I know, but they did it justice. The only other thing I'll bring up is that they won't do separate checks for parties over 6, which frankly, might go against them tip-wise, since individuals may tip more (someone should do a study). So if I were rating on food alone, 4 stars, but the lack of wait staff, or their lack of attention, really was painful. We usually have a good meal here whenever we go- it has been a while though. Buffalo tender basket is always a good go-to. The onion rings are really good, too! One weird thing is that their bbq sauce is house made and more like a sweet and sour sauce. Also, I can't tell you how many Sunday evenings we just don't feel like cooking and would love to go there- but they're closed. So odd. read more

After months of driving past this place and never stopping because the (decent sized) parking lot was ALWAYS full, we finally spied an open spot and shot right in. WHAT WERE WE WAITING FOR?!?! OMG. The stuffed mushrooms are a wonderful blend of breading and cheese with perfectly prepared caps. The burgers were well ground with no gristle or other issues. Every bite was flavorful and juicy. My wife and I had never been to the Townsend House before and decided to try it for lunch today (Friday, April 8) around 1:15 p.m. I'd love to give a review of the food but unfortunately, the bartender (long, straight black hair, mid-30s+ woman) wasn't interested in serving us. We walked in, sat down, and the bartender never even acknowledged us. She tended to everyone else, cashed out a few other patrons, and made no effort to at the very least tell us, "I'll be right with you." After about 5 minutes, we decided to leave. We ended up at the 99 in Fitchburg and within minutes of sitting down, had a drink in front of us and were ordering lunch. I tipped our bartender $20 cash on a $47 bill (I always way over tip for good service). The Townsend House was a one and done for us. Won't ever go back. I'd say that it was the TH bartender's loss, but based on the look on her face and the fact that she couldn't be bothered to acknowledge let alone serve us, I'd guess she doesn't care. read more

Decided to try this place for a second time in ~4 years, and it has not changed. Food is barely edible, and resembles school lunchroom fare. This restaurant often has a full parking lot; I can only imagine most people are there for the bar, since it's the only townie bar-like environment I've seen in Townsend. I ordered take-out for this visit, since the service was mediocre when we ate there previously. Chicken was grilled sufficiently, and was mostly tender. No seasoning or flavor to it. Cole slaw actually had a good flavor, but was so wet and visually unappealing that I only took a few bites. The mashed potatoes and sliced white bread they included were the only palatable parts. The mashed potatoes and gravy were just fine. The sesame bread was soft in the middle, and seemed fresh enough. Italian salad dressing was pumpkin ORANGE, thick, heavy, and tasted like low calorie dressing. Maybe they only have creamy Italian? but it didn't even look creamy, just resembled an unknown sauce. Salads *did* use leafy greens (not iceberg lettuce) but were diced within an inch of their life. Seemed more like salad confetti by the cut. You'd have to scoop these, as spearing this level of shredded material doesn't work. My family ate some of the fries and didn't complain. Clam strips looked okay and were eaten in their entirety - perfectly adequate! The chicken wings were very dark and may have been fried in dirty oil; they were nibbled, but didn't match up to typical pizza parlor fare. May try again in a handful of years to see if anything has improved, but they seem to be holding steady at the quality of food...which I do not recommend if you're looking for something better than you can do at home. read more

This place is great! We sat inside the tavern, so we can't speak for the dining area. From the moment we walked in to checking out, the service was great. The bartender was amazing. She was attentive, genuinely friendly, and hustled! On to the food. My soup arrived lukewarm, but it was tasty. They were out of baked or mashed potatoes with the entrée, so one star off. The chef salad was huge! The stuffed haddock very good, but eating it with onion rings because there were no potatoes was weird. Overall, the service, atmosphere, attention to patrons, and the food was very good. We will return to try other menu items. I can actually see the Townsend becoming our new local goto for a decent meal and beer. The great service and friendly bartender won us over. read more

Been driving by this place for over 30 years, figured I would stop in for lunch. Love the decor, the menu was big , waitress was very friendly. Started with the fried jumbo shrimp, was good, it came with a weird spicy sweet and sour sauce and not the traditional cocktail sauce. Also tried the cheeseburger, the meat was frozen not fresh, onion rings were delicious though. Not sure I would stop in again. read more

This place has an old school New England atmosphere. It feels like it hasn't changed since it opened. Very charming. Our table had the fish and chips basket and the cheeseburger club. This place! This is probably my shortest review. Great wholesome food, great portions, great prices. Heavy pours. I got a shot of Jamison at a restaurant once it came in an old-fashioned glass and amounted to two tablespoons. And it was $13. Not at the Townsend House. If your in Townsend & you need a place to meet up with friends for a drink this is your ticket. Nothing fancy & nothing special, but Pete knows how to pour a pint and keep his customers happy. I used to spend many an afternoon after work drinking with my coworkers & had a little reunion before I move off to VT today. So it brought back a lot of good memories of both the people & the T house. The food is also much better than you would guess here although the options tend to be a bit limited. They only have 3 draft lines & they are usually Wachusett Country, Wachusett Blueberry & Bud Light. They have a full bar although I don't think Pete knows how to make much past a whiskey sour or gin & tonic. So keep it simple or stick to beer. read more

It was way to HOT tonight and coming back from Leominster I decided not to cook... The three of us stopped in... DECOR/AMBIENCE (4/5) - I like it! Its rustic like an old tavern. I could see hanging out int he bar area with the wife if she wanted to go out for a drink and some appetizers. Very nicely decorated for the season. ROLLS (5/5) - I'm not a bread person but these were very very good! SALAD (3/5) - Very fresh salad! Very small. The Italian dressing was typical. MY FOOD (2.5/5) - I didn't like the sauce on the my $10 chicken plate. The chicken was good though. FAMILY FOOD (4/5) - My son loved his hot dog with onion rings plate... I loved the price! My wife loved her French onion soup and the onion rings. They just wanted something small. SERVICE (2/5) - This was lacking. Now the food was served promptly but they were dead. Like 2 customers in the whole place. I would of ordered another beverage if asked and I desperated needed napkins. VALUE (5/5) - It only cost $30 for the three of us and I got a beer (more for tax and tip of course) We will be back... It's a tavern, and it does its job very well. That said don't expect anything a true tavern wouldn't deliver. Portions are generous, and prices are very reasonable. Service was standard.
