So here's my review on the newish Dollar General, that replaced the Family Video on Waverly…read more.. For starters, there ain't no way you'll walk through the front doors at the time they open. I have visited this store three times in the morning, and each time they are not open! It's ridiculous, especially when you are in a rush to get home after picking up some much needed groceries! You are better off going to Meijer in the early morning... The store itself has quite a selection of all sorts. It's pretty big inside as well, and much bigger than the place on W. Saginaw! Finding things is pretty easy! I'm quite surprised how they have a lot of items behind the counter, and the alarms that go off when you open certain things in the isles. It's sad to think that people steal this much that they have to do these things. The cleanliness of the store is negligible. I have seen pop cans out and opened in the isles. I'm sure it's from someone accidentally leaving it there after stocking. It's just nasty in my opinion! And the freezer section is dirty. Lots of dirt on the shelves inside the refrigerated area as well. I see a ton of shelves looking empty, but there's boxes of the stuff on a cart. Laziness at its core. The staff are always away from the checkout lane, and usually you have to get their attention so they can ring you out. Maybe their really busy and run a skeleton crew? Who knows? They are friendly with the customers! And they are very helpful when you need to find something. I used to frequent Dollar General when I was living in Glencoe, Kentucky. Nowadays, I pop in if I don't feel like driving to Meijer. It used to be "the store" to shop at, and get everything you need, fast! Now it's at just like a second chance store for items that weren't that popular, or overstocked... Some things just ain't what they used to be!

Don't waste your time. So, we've been pretty happy as Costco…read moremembers for most of the past 15 years. We recently relocated and the two closest Costco warehouses are each about 30 minutes away, and the BJs is about 15 minutes away. So, we decided to give them a shot. First off, the prices on the shelf are okay, but you have to clip coupons in order to really get the perks of membership. I know my grandmother got a bit of a thrill clipping coupons and earning extra savings, but I have a career, a home and a family; I don't have time to clip all of the coupons. But, okay, fine, we'll muddle through... In November, they offered a free turkey to any member who spent more than $100. We spent more than $100 (our first visit was upwards of $400). We clipped the coupon when it arrived on the app. I figured there would be some demand for a free turkey, so I arrived at the store opening that Saturday morning. As expected there was a little traffic; probably two dozen people lined up for the free turkeys. The shelf was almost empty (about 10 birds), the largest turkey was about 12 lbs. The associates working in that department seemed to be caught off guard, as they scrambled around wondering why there was a crowd, they mentioned there was a pallet of frozen turkeys in the back and agreed, after some pressure from the crowd, to get it out. About 20 minutes later they wheeled a half dozen turkeys out of the back. I imagine there were more that they had, but I got mine and got on my way. At the register, the clipped coupon for my free turkey didn't work and I had to have a manager override the purchase. All-in, kind of a hassle, they clearly weren't prepared for the predictable crowd, and did their morning employees a disservice by not stocking the freezer the night before, but okay, I got a free turkey. The last straw came when we made an online purchase with them for a Christmas present for my daughter. The item, a clamp for a phone for her bike was ordered through their website and cost about $25. When the package arrived, all that was there was the envelope with a slit in it and an empty box. We tried processing a return online, but the instructions on the website told us to go to the store. I did. At the store, the customer service rep was nice enough, but didn't know how to help. The assistant manager was short and unhelpful, and instructed me to go online to process the return. I made clear that I did not appreciate the runaround and that at this point it's less about the $25 and it's about good customer service. I pay for a membership here, so I can have access to relatively good deals on larger quantities of things I need to furnish and feed my family of 6. I expect that when a branch of their company gets something wrong, that the individuals in my local store who see me a few times a month can remedy the situation easily enough. Especially if the issue is as small as a $25 return. My request was met with indifference and disdain. I was given an 800 number to call and told that nothing else could be done for me in the store. I asked to speak with the store manager. He came over and was not kind. He first told me that he didn't need to hear what I had to say because he already heard it from his assistant. When I expressed that I felt disrespected and disregarded, he allowed me to speak and tell my story anyway. I finished, he didn't care, he understood that this $25 would cost his company my business, I left. I spent 40 minutes on the phone (I think to Mexico) to process my return. I was assured that once the vendor agreed to the refund I would get an email. We'll see. At any rate, save your time on the hassle, disappointment and disrespect, just get a Costco membership..

Back to #1 above-obviously due to lack of training - it's a free for all. 4. Pretty difficult to keep a monster sized place open when no one is darkening the doors...I wonder why? NOT

Anyway, the weather on my trip had been pretty mild EXCEPT the damn day we decided to visit Old Town. It was bitter cold and kind of raining but we tried to make the best of it. Old Town is comprised of mixture of local, small businesses and it is also the greater Lansing area's arts district. Indeed there are several art galleries and studios, as well as interior design stores. I walked into a couple of the stores looking for gifts to take home, but found that most of the shops sell tchotchkes. The interior design places had nice stuff, but most of the items were pretty expensive. Al in all, it's a nice little area to walk around in the afternoon. Some years ago I went to an awesome beer festival here; I assume they host a decent amount of festivals in the area. I think that there's still a lot of work to be done in the area, they definitely need more restaurants and a greater offering (and cheaper) at the stores.

They have a forever 21, lululemon, banana republic, pottery barn, sephora, gap, game stop, victoria's secret, bath and body works, loft, express, american eagle, dick's sporting goods, pandora, and many more stores. There is few hotels nearby, I stayed at the Hyatt directly behind all the stores. There are super stores nearby - Walmart and Sam's Club. There are quite a lot of food options. I ended up trying out quite a few really good ones. They have Bravo Cucina Italiana - a nice italian restaurant. They have Boston's restaurant nearby if you want a more sports bar vibe. Champps is a great bar as well - they have a few food options with alcohol in it (even dessert). I did not try Capital Prime as I dislike seafood but I heard great things from others. If you are into fast food they have a culver's too. There are many other options that I did not get to try out, but it is worth checking out reviews. Overall, we had a good time walking around. They had music playing one night when we went to Bravo. Everyone had their own lawn chairs too. People were laughing and smiling. Many were seated outdoors to eat and get a view of the fun. It seems like an enjoyable spot
