But so what? The value you can get for your money, even though you have to buy in bulk, is pretty exceptional. Costco is a staple in our house for the necessities, such as milk, eggs, yogurt, fruit, and more. We never get out of this location with a bill that is anything under $150 and that's just fine with us. Yes, we are privileged. Yes, we buy something that we did not "need" on every visit, though we have tried so many winners making these all very reasonable risks. A fave: Rao's frozen eggplant parm. Two trays for maybe $12, and that is two-plus meals for the wife & I when we make up a salad & bread to go with. The kids? Eggplant? Pffft. Sure, I could knock the parking lot, or sure, I could knock the lines at checkout. But I have come to expect that, and I don't have any real problem. My knocks are the "seasonal" or "one-time" buys that aren't marked that way, so if I get something that I like, and it's not there the next time I go, then that kind of irritates me. I'm not talking about Christmas candy; I'm talking about a cereal, or a vegetable, or even a bulk snack. If I like it and I cannot get it the next time, then it makes me wonder why I purchased things in the first place. But oh well, I enjoyed it while I had it. The membership is worth it, and so is getting a snack on the way out. Whenever I hear that the economy is bad, I just look at the parking lot in Costco and remind myself how much freedom we have in our country and how far disposable incomes might go. Yes, I am privileged and I am grateful for that, but I love buying 10 or so winter coats for kids and donating them. The cost value is there for me, but the real value is the availability of affordable goods that I can give to those in need. Without Costco, I may not be able to do that.

But when I really need something that is critical to finishing a project or a home emergency (like a specific size washer, actual plumbing supplies, or even the correct "bit" for my rotary tool) I go the extra mile to Westlake Ace Hardware. No, it is not a "home center" it is a "hardware" store! It shares a large parking lot in a strip mall on MO 291 North, across from the Lee's Summit Historic Cemetery. You are welcomed in through their large assortment of out door plants just outside of the door, and a serious selection of high quality grills and BBQ supplies, then the really "important" stuff lies behind that. Row after row of hardware! Not the prepackaged assortments of washers, screws, hinges, but individual washers, screws and hinges! Come on, do you really need a dozen 10 mm bolts or just one to get your back on the road? Or how about that spacer for your envisioned improvement to your lawn tractor? And then is the replacement rotary switch for your custom headboard going to be found in the plastic bagged parts of a normal home center? If there is any doubt, Westlake Ace Hardware usually has it, and staff that understands you pain and where to find the cure. From replacement door keys, to the proper paint brushes to use with the special paint you finally found for that perfect room color, Westlake has always come through with either what I needed or a recommendation for a replacement item that might work better or is lower in cost. I know that when I go there I am not looking for fancy packaging, but the "thing" I need. Westlake is my port-in-the storm, and sometimes my salvation when I am at a loss to finish that important project - and at a reasonable cost

But when I'm in the area and I need something quickly, I will come in here. I stopped in for some bird suet. The store is always clean and bright and the service is friendly and helpful. It's a smaller store so they will have a smaller selection. It's just local hardware type of things and some cleaning supplies and around the house supplies. I do think their prices are quite a bit higher. The suet was about $.10 higher than Walmart where I typically get it with my weekly order. They do have a reward program that I belong to and they will send a five dollars off coupon for your birthday and a variety of other coupons in the mail if you purchase a certain amount.

Today was the absolute worst, and the LAST time we will use Honey B's services. They assured me my groomer was available, and that they had my preference card. When I arrived, I was informed that my groomer had quit, and they had all new staff. I reiterated my preferences (shave down, poodle toes, schnauzer face and beard). I was called for pick-up and had to send her back because she wasn't shaved down. When she came back out, I sent her back again because her feet weren't done. When she came back this time, they had cut her beard off and she no longer has a schnauzer face. I am so disappointed. After I got to the car, I realized that I paid him cash and that he didn't give me my change. I returned in, and the lady said she needed to call the owner before she could give me my change. Are you kidding me?? Worst service ever. Worst grooming ever. This will NEVER happen again.
