Of the Oakland/Emeryville/Alameda area Trader Joe's, this location is my favorite. Yes, it is "small," but on par with the size of most of the other East Bay locations. During the shelter in place order, the line is LONG. If you arrive early (around 8:15am), you'll probably only have to wait 40 minutes or so... I shop here because during normal times, it's still a better shopping experience for me than the Oakland locations or the Emeryville location. They're doing the best they can during SIP and their systems are improving! Line dies down in the evening, but some of those highly coveted items (toilet paper, flour, etc) are guaranteed to be gone. Great selection of snacks and cheap wine. I do wish there were more plant-based options in some sections of the store, but overall, I can get all of my grocery shopping done here. read more

I understand that this whole COVID thing is making people on the edge but it doesnt give people the right to be rude. So this was my first time at Trader Joe's ever. My brother-in-law wanted to pick up a few things here and I went with him. Unfortunately we waited for almost 20 minutes outside just to get in. I appreciate that they want everyone to be safe, but what I don't appreciate is two things: 1. I don't appreciate that they tell people over the intercom to basically hurry up and get out because there's a line outside. Yes. We know. We were in that line. How dare you tell us to hurry up when every single person in there did there time just to get in. 2. I don't appreciate the cashier judging me for only purchasing 2 things by saying "that's it?" First of all, not even "did you find everything all right?" Or "did you find what you were looking for?" Or even, "have a good day!". No. I got a "that's it?" Second of all, it wasn't my intention to even buy anything. I came with my brother-in-law who had to. The fact I purchased something from this place should be appreciated because my purchase MATTERS to YOU. My husband told me later on, a worker pulling shopping carts back in hit his car and didn't even say anything. I dislike writing this review as I really like this Trader Joe's, but my experience today was not cool. Went to TJ's in the afternoon and noticed two customers not wearing masks. Not like I want to be the nag that brings it up, but Omicron cases are rising and for an immunocompromised person like myself, I've felt safe at this TJ's so far and want to continue to feel safe. I asked an employee if masks were still required and mentioned the two not wearing them, and he said "yes they're required but we're not going to make people wear them" or something similar to this line. So required, but not going to do anything about it? Look I get we're all tired of this pandemic, but even the Country of Alameda has a mask mandate in effect and it's on the Alameda.gov website stating: "MASKS ARE REQUIRED IN INDOOR PUBLIC SPACES Due to a recent increase in cases, CDPH has mandated that everyone in California wear a mask in indoor public spaces and workplaces. The order is in effect from December 15, 2021, to January 15, 2022." So not sure if TJ's was just unaware of this mandate, which I doubt as they haven't been so far, or if this one employee was just not wanting to do anything about it. It was disappointing as I was not expecting this at this location, or the dismissal of a county wide mandate to help take care of the citizens that really need the help during this time. read more

I love trader Joe's I really do, but this locations is way too small. I always bump into others, get in someone's way, and I feel like I'm a bother to other consumers. Other than the size of the location I love the selection of food and unique products. The employees are really friendly and prompt at the service. The return policy is very liberal and you can pretty much taste anything before buying it. Wish alameda had a much bigger trader Joe's in town. read more

This is such a big Trader Joe's compared to others I've been to! The parking lot has ample space, but on weekends (and weekdays after 4pm) it gets super busy! There aren't too many other places for grocery shopping other than this shopping center. I love that there's a Safeway next door as well! Staff is super nice and friendly and all the items always appear to be stocked. This is a great place to grab prepackaged salads or sandwiches for lunches! My favorite is the kale and feta. Other than being constantly busy, this store is the perfect location to get all your healthy shopping taken care of. read more

I have not been to this location in a really long time because it is a little far and parking is a bit of a hassle. However, since COVID happened parking is easier to find, BUT there is a long line to the side to enter the store. I really like that the line moves pretty quick so you are not waiting for too long. I appreciate that people were actually respecting social distancing and kept their distance from each other. It was pretty warm the time that I went the employees were handing out water bottles to the customers to cool them down. I really appreciated that because it was warm and I was mad about forgetting my water bottle at home. I was able to find everything I needed in the shop and was able to check out fast. The service here is great and I'll be returning to this location again soon! I highly recommend locals to come to this location! read more

I have a TJ's not far from my home on Lakeshore, but I find myself shopping at this one in Alameda more and more. The reason? They seem to take the safety of their customers very seriously. They only let a certain amount of people in at a time. And shopping itself is becoming a breeze. Yes, you sometimes wait in line for 15 minutes, but that is so worth it. I also like that they put the fruit and veg section outside, so there is more room inside to avoid other shoppers. Go, TJ's! read more

Trader Joe's Alameda has set an exceptional example of how a store can and should handle masking, social distancing, crowd control, and uncooperative patrons. I prefer to shop here but the staff is so helpful and friendly and also appear to be protected by plastic barriers. Hand sanitizer is always readily available at the checkouts as well as at the exits. I've been behind uncooperative patrons who refused to wear the right mask and make a fuss at the door while everyone else is waiting patiently. I was really impressed with how TJ's handled the customers, who insisted on entering the store without the proper mask. Though I think TJ's could have more organic produce, overall, I think the overall quality, selection, and prices for all the food there is second to none. read more

During this crazy time, shopping can be very stressful. I'd like to thank Trader Joes Alameda for being open and for the amazing crew that works there. They are all incredibly nice and helpful during this process. We came on monday to pick up a ton of food. They had pre sanitized carts and a line of (awesome customers) people who were following protocol. We went inside and were able to find all that we needed easily, with no worries on stock. They do have limits on some items but they seemed reasonable. They also offer hand sanitizer as you exit, which is a very awesome move. Thank you TJ's!!! read more

I just tried going back for the first time since the pandemic began. I had avoided this place due to the long line, and the toilet paper being gone before the end of "senior hour" each day. I was impressed by how the store is handling things. First, the line is somewhat long, but I didn't wait too long -- about 20 minutes. It was afternoon and warm, and an employee came through with a shopping cart offering cold bottled water to waiting customers. I was the only taker, but it sure hit the spot! It was pretty easy to keep social distance in the line, although it's a little tricky where the line crosses the path to go into Appleby's or into the stores in the middle of the shopping center. Near the front of the line, they have info painted on the sidewalk. When it was time for me to go in, I was given a sanitized cart. I was also given a piece of tape to put over the filter in my mask, and the employee was extremely polite about that. The store itself did not have too many customers; I was generally able to keep social distance most of the time. I did worry a little about the workers; there seemed to be a lot of them, and they didn't seem as able to keep social distance while stocking shelves. Shelves were well-stocked, and I was able to do my shopping relatively quickly. I did not have to wait in line to checkout and the checkers/baggers were extremely efficient. I chose to bag at my car, and I bought a lot, so the bagger went to get a second sanitized cart to pile my stuff in after check-out, so they didn't have to wait for my cart to be emptied before starting that process. Employees in the store were helpful and polite the couple of times I had questions or asked if they could move out of the way so I could get something (I don't want to infringe on their space). The store had hand sanitizer for customer use in a couple different places, and I was glad to see toilet paper back in stock. I will not hesitate to go back. read more

The way that TJ's has conducted the store and the sanitizing has been excellent during SIP. I always admired how they run this small but mighty store that is VERY busy in this typical suburbia (lots of moms, families, older folks, etc.). There's usually a line (sometimes not if you're lucky) but it goes pretty fast in the store. They sanitize every basket and cart themselves and offer wipes and sanitizer on your way out. I appreciate the friendliness and efficiency (you tend to lose one of those characteristics but they have both). Shout out to the Asian guy who cut down the outside line more efficiently in the recent weeks - before the line was always to Kohl's but now with this guy, the line is SUPER efficient and less intimidating to wait in (even in the rain, they provide umbrellas to borrow!). read more

Love this TJ's!!! The selection and variety is great. I avoid frozen food but their veggie and fruit selection is great. I buy the Artesian water each week, aka, the "ELIXIR OF LIFE". The staff are always cool and hard-working. Mostly, very helpful. But TJs should expand like Whole Foods and carry more organic products. I love Trader Joe's. I grocery shop here almost exclusively. I avoid going to any store, mostly because I know I will be paying more anywhere else and the quality won't be as good. Plus, Trader Joe's carries so many unique items, and they're always coming up with new ones. Things I love about Trader Joe's: - Fast lines, especially the "hand baskets only" line - yummy samples and coffee in the back - you can ask a crew member to open up anything in the store (unless it needs to cook) to taste a sample - you can return anything you didn't like - even if it's mostly eaten - for a full refund, no questions asked (I've done this twice total, and it's not an issue) - great selection of salads-to-go - really great selection of wines at a good price - local Alameda art painted on all the walls inside - there's always someone who can help if you have a question - they have an end cap in the back that displays all their latest products, and I check it every single time I walk in - always an adventure! The one downfall, causing me to dock one star is their produce. It is not fresh, and you have to use it up within two days if it doesn't already have mold on it. The bagged brocoli and carrots are an exception, but almost everything not refrigerated, is not going to be great. Just be careful. All the frozen stuff is GREAT. Some of my favorite/regular items: - jalapeño flavored hummus - sliced mango (frozen or fresh) - bahn mi inspired salad - TJ's vanilla almond milk - turkey bacon - RX bars - Epic Bars - Frozen naan bread - vanilla clusters granola (good with the vanilla almond milk!) - caramelized onion cheddar cheese - three-seed sourdough bread - TJ's coconut water - TJ's fruit bars (apple + coconut) - trail mix (the omega trek mix) - frozen mashed cauliflower - frozen blueberries - verde salsa - guacamole - dark chocolate covered pretzel slims - peanut butter filled pretzels (salted) And on and on! We came in and my son was excited to find the "stuffed animal" and left me to ask a clerk where he should look. Unfortunately, he was told they stopped putting it out since the pandemic. He was sad about it but we kept shopping and he found a someone near the sample table that quickly said to him "No! We are not giving samples as she rolled her eyes" I get that not all people are kid people but you don't have to be so rude. I told my son sometimes we have to go with the flow but as he reminded me you don't have to mean about it. I really hope this place becomes more kid friendly to kiddos. Local trader Joe's that's great on all days except Sunday afternoons. In general: - great salads and snacks - terrible fresh produce quality (go to Safeway or the Farmer's market) - dairy, meat, eggs, fish = better than the Safeway next door - they've been out of arugula (???) since January. How do you run out of arugula? Also be aware: if you forget your wallet, they don't hold your groceries for you (like every other grocery store), you have to get back in line, which to me is just weird and a bit cold. It's not like I didn't already wait nor am I asking them to wait for me. Just, put my basket to the side, and when I get back, you can run the receipt and I can pay. It's not like Trader Joe's is a local boutique store without an electronic system.. The cashier also told me she would have to rering up everything which also isn't true. Ask them to suspend and you can go to any line (and wait again), and they can pull it up. Ugh read more

I bought salmon from here twice and both times it smelled very strong like chemicals and very fishy even though I opened it immediately. I've also bought Jicama from here twice and had to throw them out within 2 days! I'm not sure what's up with this location, but this is my local TJ's but I'll be traveling to shop elsewhere moving forward. Like all Trader Joe's, it's always best to go on a weekday when the crowd's not as overwhelming...because everyone loves TJ products THAT much. I discovered TJ many years ago with the ex, and I've been hooked ever since. I love how their products aren't as processed as the usual fare you find in supermarkets. TJs have a wide selection of products, but this location in particular has a huge floral and refrigerated sections. What I tend to do is buy the frozen foods or ready to eat foods for dinner in sometimes. The parking lot is spacious, shared with the rest of Town Center. It amazes me how much the outdoor shopping center has improved since the overhaul. A total revival since those dark days as the rundown Southshore center. I still have to remember to call it Town Center and not Southshore out of habit. read more

As of today 7/8/2019, there has been a major problem. I'd like to make some suggestions to one of my favorite stores. The problem is shopping carts whose wheels lock up immediately when they are pushed across really rough bumpy areas, as one is transporting groceries out of the store back to their parking space. #1: Hope you'll give some consideration to adding a new location in Alameda near the Webster Tube area. I think that would reduce the congestion of parking, cars and traffic in the South Shore area. Less traffic, less congestion, less need for limits on grocery carts. #2: Have some type of mechanism so customers can unlock the cart's back wheels. Here are other suggestions: a) take the wheel lock off baskets, and hire enough staff( students etc.) to retrieve the TJ carts and take them back to the store area designated for carts. b) Arrange for more mid area( near Trader Joe's) expanded parking opportunities. The reason many people are pushing the carts so far from the TJ parking lot is because most of the best parking spaces, with no congestion, are at the far end of the lots away from Trader Joes. c) Place some TJ return cart areas, in the parking lots of adjacent stores. d) Hire people to escort people to their car, so in case the cart locks up on the way, they'll have assistance. ( not the most cost efficient, but at least this could encourage some ideas) My understanding is that the carts stop when moving across bumpy areas on sidewalks and in the driveways, and this was designed to keep people from stealing carts, for personal use, off the whole parking lot. I can see your concern; but on the other hand, please consider that seniors and those with limited physical strength could find themselves in the middle of a driving area vulnerable to auto accidents and tying up traffic. The other concern is that a car might back out of a parking spot and hit someone whose cart just stuck. Hope you'll take this issue under consideration. Otherwise, I appreciate the quality of the store, its employees and customer service. read more

I love this place. Yes, it gets crowded, but that's for good reason. They have great items, and the staff is nearly always super helpful and friendly. I love the cashiers, they are always very chipper and friendly, ask about your day, etc. The only thing I wish TJ's would take seriously is reducing plastic packaging - especially for produce. It's so damaging to our environment and 90-95% or so of the plastic that we deposit into the blue municipal recycling bins ends up in landfill (Google it). But that's not the fault of this specific store, that's a corporate decision. I'm sure they have some reason for packaging so much produce in plastic, and I know they've received consistent feedback about that from customers. read more

Staff members are busy yet ready and willing to help and they know their stuff. A mini cup of free coffee to make you feel like a million dollars and Bob's your uncle.
