Bought chicken breast, went home and this is what I got, black chicken! Went back to the store and they gave me a refund.

4-26-21 Always one of the last stops before checking in at the airport. No matter what city we leave from, if there is a Trader Joe's in driving distance, we will come by. Now that we are older we don't need a separate suitcase to bring omiyage back for family, work friends, hobby friends and other acquaintances. I sure miss those chocolate dipped potato chips much like Japan's Royce brand. Hint hint, please bring it back. I like their Jojoba oil, it costs less than Down To Earth at home. Usually buy the individually bagged nuts or trail mix. Also pick up something for the vet staff too as fur baby spends boarding time there. Always admire their reasonably priced flower bouquets.

Hedgy with scones from Trader Joe's for our drive to Washington State.

The Trader Joe's in El Cerrito Plaza is my favorite Trader Joe's in the East Bay Area. It wasn't too busy typically early in the morning, but was pretty consistently busy throughout the day. Lines/check-outs were well placed so that those standing in line were not in the way of merchandise. There are check stands for baskets only to help speed up the flow of traffic at check-out. When I first moved to Albany I was a little hesitant to come to Trader Joe's in part because I had become so accustomed to self check-out, but the prices, quality of food, and variety of offerings here were unparalleled so coming here became a habit. I tried a bunch of different things at this location and my staples were the breads/bakery items, meat, cheese, fresh produce, frozen meals and pizzas, frozen fruit, condiments, sweet treats, and prepared/to-go salads. I developed a set of regular favorites unique to this store and enjoyed both walking and driving to this location. The workers were kind and helpful if needing direction. Parking is plentiful, but during busy times I had to park on the street outside the parking lot or I would go home park my car and walk here. Periodically there is a farmer's market in the parking lot that takes up a number of parking spaces. This was one of my last two places to stop for food in California the day I moved back to Washington State. I got some fried chicken from the Albany Safeway and scones from here to be my nourishment during the drive. Hedgy and I both enjoyed the scones. They are easy to eat in a sit-down and on-the-move kind of setting. Made sure to pack a few napkins and a trash bag for the 15 hour drive so the crumbs weren't flying around the car.

Overall the best thing about this store is a Manager named Daniel. He realizes his store, for…read morewhatever reasons, does NOT have the selection or options of some other (perhaps larger) Lucky stores. Eg - when I went to get a raincheck on an item (then found out they didn't even carry it) he made it right by giving me the option to buy the same item in different size at a pro rata same price as the raincheck. Otherwise imagine - I would have had to drive maybe 7 miles or more to another Lucky. That might or might not have the item... Lucky chain seems to have taken a hit from the online ordering stores such as Whole Foods Market. So this is not a glamorous store. If rating just the store, I might rate it a 3 (I need to give them credit for being open in the area when other stores are closed etc...I know the Lucky off San Pablo Dam Road totally CLOSED... Hate to see that happen to this one). The 5 rating is for Daniel working to make things right. I observed him helping others, and trying to be patient with an employee who made a mistake. I think it's hard for retail managers to find good long term employees these days. And that likely makes it harder to be a manager. Ie - I would imagine few people at the top of the talent pool enter a Lucky grocery store expecting a long term career anymore....Anyway, Daniel is excellent / top of the talent pool material. If he ever needs a promotion or applies to another employer, I hope he can use this review as an example of his managerial skills.

Something is wrong with their freezers. Don't buy frozen food/ice cream from them. What a waste of…read moremy money.

I have a soft spot for this Richmond store - I almost always find it to have a chill atmosphere and…read moreit's rarely crowded, especially if you go a little later in the evening. They play fun music that sometimes makes people spontaneously break into song and dance in the aisles. Okay, maybe I'm painting an exaggerated picture here - it's not like a musical - you need to go to the Oakland store for that level of engagement ;) The Richmond store aisles also feel a bit more spacious than other branches of the GO and staff members are usually friendly. Anyway, the Grocery Outlet is becoming increasingly useful for anyone on a budget (check out Ethical Bargains) and especially anyone who's trying to adopt a more sustainable, plant-based diet. Meat and dairy substitutes can be expensive, so this is one of my main reasons for going. The other is red wine - it can be a lot of fun trying to find excellent wines there and some are on sale for a fifth of the normal price. Current wine tip: Sebastiani winery. Overall, I think that the Grocery Outlet deserves 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these factors: * Stocking food that would otherwise be in danger of being tossed out because of packaging changes, overstock, imperfections, or looming expiration dates, is part of a solution to the huge problem of food waste. Around 30% of food is wasted globally, contributing 8% of greenhouse gas emissions. * GO stores have been trending towards stocking more plant-based and organic food. * The Grocery Outlet stocks a good number of brands that rate well, ethically. For example, Miyoko's, Cascadian Farm, Dr. Bronner's soap, Treeline vegan cheese, Beyond Good chocolate, etc.) * The Grocery Outlet brings plant-based food (meat substitutes like Beyond Burgers) within reach for those on a budget who want to live a more sustainable life.

After having dinner at one our regular place, Google maps directed us north this time to get onto the freeway. After traveling two blocks, we came across this Grocery Outlet and had to check it out. It was a stand- alone store and it had its own large parking lot. This store is large, spacious with wide aisles compared to typical stores. Large displays of items and there were many hot buys and deals. The refrigerated section of produce, meats, deli and dairy covered the back wall of the store. The store was well stocked and carries a lot of inventory in each category, so you get a lot of options here. Scored on mangos at $.50, Guinness pretzels at $.50 and 22oz organic granola for $1.99. This is one of the better GO stores that I've shopped. A good store choice for you Grocery Outlet shoppers if you're in the area.
