Trader Joe's charges 25 cents per paper bag and keeps the bag fee. I brought my bags twice here and was told you can't use them. One time I don't bring bags they double bag and charge be 3.50 for paper bags. I asked I thought we weren't allowed to bring in bags? Oh! You can now, please take your bag and bag it outside on this nasty table everyone else is crowded around bagging their groceries. Who keeps the bag fee ?!! TRADER JOES! Store was 3/4 full of items. This TJs is a zoo - it amazes me that people actually try to drive here. I lived a few blocks away for a year, and would walk up here and take my life in my hands trying to get into the store. Why o why do designers insist on making pedestrians walk across parking lots to entrances instead of putting entrances right on the street and the parking adjacent to the building with safe walk ways for people to cross the lots? I always wonder this at places like the TJs on Masonic and at Berkeley Bowl. It's your basic TJs - it's always packed full of people and it has lots of packaged food and cheap wine. It's great in a pinch for cheap champagne and OJ for mimosas for that brunch you're dashing to attend -- but don't expect to get in and out quickly. read more

Inexpensive grocery and friendly staff. Good deals inside the city unless you go to Chinatown or Path Mart. They carry organic products as well. I come here on a weekly basis to stock up on snacks, dried food and sometimes yummy frozen food! Avoid after work crowd and weekends after 12PM. I wish I can say that the employees keep the line moving but I had the slowest check out ever. I asked my cashier to double bag it, twice, but he only did it to 2 out of 6 of my bags moving in a super drowsy state. Is there a paper bags shortage that I don't know about? Well thanks to him one of the handles broke on my way to a party so I showed up looking like I just went dumpster diving. We all know that TJ bags' handles are well... Not Whole Foods quality. Really disappointed by this unpleasant bagging and slow checking out experience but otherwise the produce and selections are the same at this location as any other. Decent size store, good selection. Nothing bad to say about the actual store, comparable with most other Trader Joe's. The issue I have with this location is the parking. Small parking lot for the amount of people that shop here. Huge pain to park here or pickup or drop off people. There are people directing and regulating traffic in and out of the parking lot. Sometimes it can be a 15 minute wait just to get into the parking lot. 5 stars for store, 0 stars for parking lot. read more

I like Trader Joe's stores and the value of what can be purchased compared to a typical supermarket. Stores also have a very clear layout and it's fairly easy to find what you need. This particular store location however seems to have a number of employees with a chip on their shoulders. If you decide to shop here, don't bother to ask any of the workers about any of the products or where to find something if you happen to not spot it. As a customer, the "service" I've received included being mocked for asking if a limited product had a purchase qty limit (at the time there was a run on the popular Ube mochi pancake mix) and the worker stating it's stupid people care so much about a dumb product that isn't even that good. Also, asking where I could find an item that happened to be covered by a group of people but the worker waved me over to the direction and told me to go find it. Not to mention, immature cashiers who are selective on who to be polite towards. I don't know what's going on with this store - I suppose if I return I'll have to remember to not bother asking any of the "friendly grocers" for help. Seems that while the company promotes being a friendly neighborhood store who doesn't see a need for online sales, this store operates no differently from clicking items on a website. This TJ's is a total cluster I've almost rear-ended all the cars that wait in line to get into this place on a Saturday. Imagine that on the Saturday evening news: Trader Joe's nightmare! So-- I used to shop here a ton but the last time I was in the staff was cutting off customers right and left. It was one thing when it felt like a zoo because of the number of customers but when zero etiquette exists due to congestion and staff are the ones being rude-- it becomes clear that a team meeting should take place. Also, the meat was all in bloated packaging which means refrigeration isn't low enough. How I picture hell to look like is a Trader Joe's parking lot. What is it about Trader Joes and their damn parking lots? Always so frustrating! Even in Minneapolis (St. Louis Park location) the parking lot is ridiculous. Waited in line just to park. While we were waiting we played "Count the Prius in the lot" which was fun. I think we got around 16. I would say 'park a block away and just walk in' but that would suggest their is street parking around and there is not. The hassle of getting in and out of the crowded Trader Joes store and lot...is arguably not worth the effort for Mochi, Ginger Snaps, and other assorted TJ snacks. I don't live in San Francisco, so what do I know? Maybe the hassle is just another day in the life. read more

I'm not going to write a review about Trader Joe's (TJ's), because we all know about TJ's. If you don't know about TJ's you'll eventually figure it out yourself and you probably don't need another know-it-all telling you what to buy or how to shop. Instead, I will post the recipe I made Sunday night using all TJ's ingredients. 2 boxes of TJ's mac & cheese 1 can of TJ's fried onion pieces (I am tired of typing TJ's, please note all ingredients came from TJ's) frozen peas 1 cup of 2% milk unsalted butter salt mild cheddar cheese cracked pepper canola oil can spray stuff 1/2 and 1/2 skinless maple chicken sausage Preheat oven to, um, 375? I have a gas oven and the numbers are worn off on the nob, so I am not really sure what temperature. How about -preheat oven until it gets hot, then turn it down a little. Liberally spray/oil the pan. I am not joking about this, this casserole is worst than napalm when you clean it afterward. Cook mac and cheese as directed, but in a cast iron pan (or suitable pan to oven cooking vessel). Meanwhile, chop up 3 of the chicken sausages. Chop the sausages like this: first cut in half, then cut the halves in half, then put them back together and chop them up so you get 1/4 pieces. or whatever. Bite size is fine too. Thinly slice about 3 oz of the cheese, enough to cover the top of the pan. Crack pepper all over the prepared mac & cheese. All over. Stir it in. Add a sprinkle of salt. Do more stirring. Stir-stir-stir. measure a 1/4 cup of the 1/2-1/2 pour in prepared mac & cheese while stirring. Sprinkle 1/2 a bag of frozen peas, stir-stir-stir, 1/3 can of the fried onion pieces and the chopped sausages. Stir-stir-stir. more cracked pepper. It is so very exhausting writing a recipe! How do people do it? I should have cut and pasted from somewhere. My brain hurts. Lay (lie?) the cheese on top until it covers the entire pan. Sprinkle fried onion pieces on top of the cheese. More cracked pepper. Cook in oven until bubbly. Then take out of oven, turn off heat and put pan on top of store to cool. Serve with more cracked pepper. read more

Well, if you've been to one Trader Joe's, you've pretty much been to them all. They typically share similar characteristics, and for the most part, the items on the shelves are consistent whether you're shopping in Burbank, or Burlingame. I welcome and appreciate most of those similarities, but some, I just don't understand. One of which, is why in EVERY Trader Joe's I've ever stumbled through, it seems like the isles were constructed for a village of malnourished midgets. Seriously, it's a complete pain in the ass for a grown ass man like myself to push a shopping cart through their isles without being in someone's way. It's so absurd, it's almost funny. Another miss is the lack of produce. Sure, they have all sorts of frozen dinners and pre-packaged boxes of Pad Thai, but how about some kiwis? I suppose you can't please all of the people all of the time.... Other than that, they'e on point, and this location is no exception. I didn't realize the prices were so low until I started working here and had the time to compare it to regular chain grocery stores (Albertson's & Safeway) and specialty stores (Whole Foods). Anytime I go elsewhere and see something TJ's sells, 9 out of 10 times it's at least 30% more expensive. When it comes to value and ready made meals, Trader Joes (TJ) has no competitors. As I reflect on all the $$$ spent in 09 on lavish meals, boozeathons, and general tom foolery, I get a sudden urge to jump off a cliff. Sadly, the past can't be re-lived, but luckily 2010 is here, and I'm ready to get frugal! I WILL eat more at home and stay in more on weeknights. (I thought those words would never come out of my mouth, I must be getting old) Everyone has their favorites at TJ, here are mine: All the refrigerated pizzas (perfect for my dorm style fridge) Various cartons of soup (my favorite is the black bean which can be enhanced w/ crushed tortilla chips and chunks of avocado) Ready made curries w/ tuna Ready made paloc paneer Alfredo/marinara sauces w/ gnocchi many many more.... Besides the great food, TJ's makes it a point to hire helpful foodies. I am always greeted w/ a smile and helpful the info I need. I only wish there was a TJ closer/more convenient to my place. I go there only once every two weeks and am able to get two weeks worth of groceries for about $100 (no, I don't eat like a bird... more like a cow... I chew!) 2. They pretty much get 5-stars on all factors mentioned above. 2a. Yes, parking can be ze royal b$%ch, and that's why I go there either Friday or Saturday nights (sad, I know... I have a busy social life you can tell). And if waiting to get a spot in the lot is too Zen for you, try across the street. 3. They are remarkably quick around restocking shelves and rarely have I seen a shelf that has remained empty for long. 3a. They do their major restocking Friday evenings a.k.a. best time to go coz everyone is out partying, so you get an empty TJs and you get everything new (me thinks I should not have shared this wee bit of juicy detail... hell! I love all you Yelpers). 4. They stock my all time favorite bread - Quinoa Bread which my best buddy insists on still calling bird feed. 5. Pretty good selection of wines, spirits and hoppy libations. 6. And folks, give them a hand by bagging your own groceries. They appreciate it so much and its a great gesture to get those good karma / brownie point scores up. 7. Their selection is decent, but I've found so many items that were spoiled the minute I got them home! Over the past 6 months, I've come home with spoiled chicken thighs, a rotten watermelon, moldy pita bread, rotten asparagus, and Brussels sprouts that looked fine until they were cut in half...they looked diseased inside. For many years this was my favorite TJ's location (store #100) when I used to live in the Richmond district. But then it became too popular with a long line of cars blocking a lane of Masonic Ave. Now it seems small to me compared to the other locations, and I think that I can get better variety at the other stores. The limited hours (closes at 9pm) was another disincentive to drive out of my way to come here more often. I really wish they could build a 2nd floor to add more parking, similar to how the 9th street TJ's location has 2 parking levels - that was nixed by complex building codes, lack of support, and regulations for this area. Another solution that didn't happen was moving to the nearby vacated Mervyn's space on Geary - more space, more parking. Too bad a different "TJ" (TJ Maxx) is taking over that Mervyn's space (Update: Target is now biding for that space too, don't know who'll get the nod). read more

But the parking lot is pain to get into! But Masonic is always backed up! But, But, But..... If these are the reasons you aren't going to Trader Joe's you've got issues. This is the best chain of grocery store i have ever been in, and I'm not going to drive any further than i have to to get here. The 5 minutes i might sacrifice waiting for the parking security to wave me over into a spot would be far less than it would take me to drive across the city to another more parking-friendly location. All i can say to that is.... Would you like some cheese with that wine? Well if you do, come to TJ's! They've got it all! A pretty fantastic selection of wines, all reasonably priced that leave you coming back for more. Unless of course you bought a case of two buck chuck that might last longer than two nice bottles you can get for the same price. But oh, the two buck chuck hangover....nasty. I recommend buying a few bottles of each...drinking the good stuff first and resorting to the Chuck when you aren't tasting the wine anymore anyway. Olive bread, baguettes, salami, brie, Havarti, chevre, blue, feta, grapes, grape tomatoes, watermelon, etc.....they have most of what you are looking for to have a nice picnic at the beach. Its all the best quality stuff too. Their store is so shopper friendly and they even have samples! I love samples! They are free! The staff is very accommodating and helpful, and they are everywhere! I always find the good stuff here that I never look for at a larger grocery store like Albertsons. Ginger snaps, veggie sticks, an assortment of awesome nuts, boxed soups, perogies, organic soap, frozen mochi, and so many different juices. Its way more fun to shop here. I spend less because its smaller than most other chain stores, but am always happier with the product i bring home. Their bags always come in handy later too. read more

Other items of note: The pesto is amazing, and I've never purchased a French wine with a screw top that was bad. Oh yeah - PhuKet Lager! Goat yogurt! 4 different kinds of dry ros! It's corporate, it's anti-union, it's a lot of bad things, but the good outweighs, just like the dude abides. UPDATE: I just went shopping and I won a free swag bag full of food - just because (TJ's is celebrating its 10th anniversary or something - I think that's the occasion).
