I never find the basics, like veggies or meat to be too great here. For one thing, all the veggies are entombed in plastic. This location in particular is a gigantic pain in the ash to get to. I think TJ's is better for their house brands of packaged goods like dog treats, dog vitamins, and for things like olive oils, spreads, cheeses, and stuff you need for appetizers at a party. read more

Parking is a pain in the ass here. This store is always out of mozzarella cheese sticks. I hate that they put fruits and vegetables in plastic packages. Apples are not good right now. But you can't beat the prices. And they do sell Fage yogurt, which I am totally addicted to. And the parking really isn't that bad. I mean, you aren't going to get Bob Hope parking (a spot right outside the entrance), but there is always a spot somewhere in the 5 acre parking lot. Okay. Stop your complaining already. The interior of this TJ's was surprisingly spacious...I guess I've grown used to SF shoppers ramming their carts into my ankles. The wine selection somehow omitted wines from Australia and New Zealand. this was probably a good thing for me, otherwise I would have been getting plastered in my hotel room in the nearby Marriott the night before the bar. read more

TJ - you've been my #1 since the first time my mom took me to you back in the 1990's in Daly City. I have loyalty to Trader Joe's - Such a great market! This TJ on Grant has a great selection of meats and frozen foods. Love that you can get food for bargain prices. If you're not shopping at Trader Joe's already, you should! The prices are affordable. I love Trader Joe's - not much more I need to say about that! BUT, the staff at this specific location are impressive. I was so grateful when I recently went shopping and loaded up my cart with $150 of groceries, a great haul! However, I found upon being checked out that I had left my wallet at home. The guys were great, they actually wheeled my whole cart into the fridge and paused the transaction. I ran to the bank, came back and paid, and we were all better off! read more

I love Trader Joe's and I probably go at least 4 times a week. I know it's small but I'm use to it and it's close to my house. My only request is that it would great if they kept their alcoholic beverages chilled. Wouldn't you agree? Oh and the sample coffee has kept me going when I've needed it most. That little cup goes a long way and I am so thankful for that on mornings that I didn't have time to brew my own. For about $40, you can come out with a whole lot of wonderful things, including a little something sip on. read more

I love this Trader Joes! Its a fun shop with lots of ORGANIC food for fair prices. They even have organic lollypops for my daughter. The fruits and veggies are great! Today when I got home from work I asked my Mother how her day was and what she had done. Her reply was that she went to Trader Joes down on Delaware. She went further on to explaine that whiel she was there one "Very pleasant and kind" employee had walked her around the store showing her where the items she needed were. She even got the items off the shelf for her. My mother is 89years old and suffers from rhuematoid arthritis. It's feels good to know that this woman took the time to look after my Mother the way she did. She must have spent a good ten minutes helping Mom. Trader Joes has been my favorite grocery store from the first day I walked in five years ago not only because of there vast selection of food but because of there employees. Despite the smaller size this TJs is always well stocked. Standard but good wine and beer selection, big dairy section (including the full fat mango Greek yogurt that should be illegal it is so good), and a large veggie area. read more

I notice that they now carry good USDA meat from local producers, so I now have purchased meat there. I tis costlier than the other but well worth the cost difference. I do wish they would carry BONE IN chicken thighs as I prefer them over boneless but, I guess one can't have everything. read more

The parking lot is about half as big as it should be and one of these days I'm gonna get bumped from all the chaos there...but once inside, I have to pick up their herb spring salad mix and a bottle of their strawberry lemonade, which is like crack in an all natural organic juice form. The thought of visiting a grocery store used to make me cringe. Not sure if it was the bad fluorescent lighting, long lines, or crappy service, but all of that changed when we started frequenting Trader Joes. It really does have a small town General Store kind of vibe. The staff is always eager to chat and pretty knowledgeable. The real bonus is the selection of one-off deals that you can find like a $14 bottle single malt scotch that's actually really good! They also have a great frozen Mahi Mahi that I've used to fool friends into thinking it was fresh. Great overall experience every time we go! read more

I like trader joes cuz their prices are mostly consistent. You never have to wonder whether your items are on sale for that week cuz you always get the everyday low tj price! They recently dropped the stone wheat cracker reduced sodium which i am bummed about. The regular full sodium ones are too salty for my palate. The price on those crackers were great... oh well. I still go for their yogurt, milk, crunchy peanut butter, cat cookies, 2 buck chuck, honey wheat pretzels, fat free half/half. I like the food preparers. I have been a fan of Trader Joe's for a long time, and to me, most of the stores are pretty much the same in what they offer and even the sizes of the store are pretty similar. I guess I'm normal in the sense that I don't like long lines, but other than that, I am happy with this Trader Joe's location. It gets a plus because it's located in a shopping center near other stores so I can shop beforehand and then buy some groceries afterward. And, there's plenty of parking to go around since there is a huge lot, so that's convenient. 11/25/2008 - Disappointed they did not have what I was looking for, which was the calcium and vitamin fortified juice called "Dynamo." I then went to the Trader Joe's in San Carlos and saw it there, thank goodness, but that made me realize how horribly understocked the juice section was at this Trader Joe's in San Mateo. read more

I came on a Saturday afternoon so it was busy, but it seems the customers here were much ruder than my local TJ. I prefer this location over the one at Hillsdale for multiple reasons the main one being parking here is plentiful at any time of day. In addition, this location is usually far less crowded and the staff here are quite friendly. This store is a good size and typically everything I am looking for is available. I usually come here in the early AM on the weekends and I can get in and out in about 30 minutes with a cart of groceries. Would recommend this location! read more

I love this store. They may not have everything a big grocery store has, but what they have is better. There produce is more fresh and tastes sweeter. They have a great selection of cheese and nuts. They also have in the back corner a little demo area for you to get cooking ideas. There pricing is so wonderful. My roommate didn't use to shop there because she thought with the store containing so many organic items would definitely be expensive. Since I have shown her how inexpensive it is, we both love going in and picking out some great items. read more

I live closer to the one in san carlos but the parking there sucks. People are always driving crazy in the parking lot, so we drive down to the one in san mateo. This place is so much cheaper than going to Whole Foods. You can find a lot of organic and healthy foods here. One pet peeve that I have is that they don't always carry everything. Sometimes they're out of ketchup or lasagna noodles, today they were out of beef broth. The checker told me that the noodles and broth were "seasonal" items. What's so seasonal about lasagna? I wish they carried more items...like cabbage or saran wrap! Then I could get all of my shopping done at one place! Oh well. I still love coming here. The service is awesome, and it's where I buy most of my groceries. read more

I do all of my grocery shopping at Trader Joes. Some complain that they do not offer the same items week after week. That's a good thing! It means that it's not a cookie cutter process to get the pesticide-hormone-GMO foods that Safeway/Lucky offers. The quality is great, especially when considering the pricing. Way less expensive than Whole Foods/Safeway/Lucky and the rest. Cool items that you won't find at most other grocery chains. Definitely try some of the frozen meals as well.. They probably should expand, but I hope they do just so they can offer more of the awesome stuff they currently carry. This TJ in San Mateo is about average size for other TJs that I've been to. read more

Just moved in the area and I love this TJ's. It is smaller than the one I was used to in MV but if you hit it at the right time you do not get stuck in the weekend craziness. I do my shopping during the week and have learned not to do anything like grocery shopping on the weekends. Crowds drive me crAzy. Produce is hit and miss with all TJ's so I really do not do much of the produce shopping at TJ's but when it comes for goodies for the kiddos TJ's cannot be beat. The staff here is super FRIENDLY and they are super helpful and Whole Foods should come over here on how to run some great customer service. All in all 2 thumbs up read more

I love everything about this Trader Joe's. The staff, the product, the samples ;o) ... My only complaint is with TJ's godawful supply chain. I went on Sunday for two things: toilet paper and cat food and they had neither. NO.TOILET.PAPER. How does a grocery store not have any toilet paper to sell? When you chang warehouses (warehouse computer systems? I'm not clear) and now you can't ship TP to the stores. Please Cap'n TJ, Supply Chain Management is MKTG101, don't make me go to Safeway for staple items. and don't get mad when I try to buy a case of the tuna for cats (with vitamins), it's the only tuna they like and I'll need to lay in a supply for winter just in case your suppply chain kablooies again. I like cheese. A lot. TJs has my favorites and at great prices. They always carry fun products to try, too, and the customer service is always really friendly and helpful. The only downside is it's so popular that it's sometimes hard to navigate. read more

I love TJ's!!! It's close to work so I often stop by and get a salad, or stop on my way home to pick up something for dinner. They have a good variety of food, but I often find that they change their products regularly so I get bummed when I go there and find out they no longer carry certain stuff.
