Stopped here after a hot, punishing ride up Goler Wash for some ice cream and it not only hit the spot, but was some of the best ice cream I have ever had. Maybe I am a bit biased, by my visit was five stars. read more

We arrived right before closing on 6/7/19 (we drove past the high school on our way thru town and it looked like graduation was happening). The counter girl was friendly. We all got swirled cones dipped in chocolate and they were perfect. Totally hit the spot on a hot night. My family stopped by this diner on the way back from Death Valley National Park. Though we initially stopped to get sodas, we ended up getting burgers, corn dogs and chilli cheese fries which did not disappoint. It was really good! The town has 1895 people here and I think most of them eat here! We went in for ice cream and the place stayed busy while we were there. I had a chocolate peanut butter shake. Tasted more like all peanut butter. I think next time I will have a dipped cone. The guys had strawberry shakes and Auntie had hot fudge sundae. The shakes very thick but tasty. Hot fudge sundae seems to be the way to go...it was yummy and a good sized small. The large shakes are HUGE...stick with the small. The restaurants claim to fame is an episode of ER was filmed here. I have been eating at the Trails Drive-In for about 30 years. I live about 30 miles away and always pass by on our way to Death Valley. Sometimes we just go there for lunch as it has the best burgers around. I highly recommend it. The Pastrami Double Cheese Burger is great as are the other burgers. There not excessively big but very tasty. Fries are always good too. It changed hands a few years ago but the quality has remained very high. I often top off my lunch/dinner with a mini-sundae. Place has been there since 1958. My only complaint is that they are not open on Sundays. Give it a try if you passing by. read more

Trona is usually just far enough out of my way that I don't make it out here, but the few times I have, I'm very glad I did. This place has the best french fries I've ever eaten in my life. I have no idea if it's because there's some kind of incredibly addictive drug mixed into the fryer, or if they just use some unknown magical desert mineral to salt their fries instead of, well, salt, but adding any condiment to these potato sticks of deliciousness was straight up offensive to our taste buds. A definite must-taste if you ever find yourself in the neighborhood. read more

Unexpectedly this burger joint in a rural industrial town on the path to Death Valley has my new favorite Reuben sandwich which is now one of my favorite grilled cheese sandwiches too. Perfectly grilled bread and just enough cheese meat and kraut to taste all of the flavors without losing any of them. Definitely stopping for another anytime I get anywhere near. read more

I give this place four stars only because we only had shakes and fries passing through. (I don't want to give it five stars until I try the food) The staff was very friendly and the lady who rang us up asked everyone in the dining room if the temperature was okay. I can't tell you if it was the thrill of coming off Telescope Peak, or being so unbelievably exhausted, or the magic of Trona, but I had the best chocolate shake of my life and the Trails Drive In. This place I used to do some custodial work a couple of hours a week. The people that own it have for over 30 years and for the anniversary which is in May, every year, they roll the proces back to what they were when they bought the place. It is really neat. The fried food is most of the time really good. The milkshakes and ice-cream are VERY good. I recommend eating here if you pass through. The place is very clean and refresshing , and BTW, it is the last place to eat heading to Death Valley for like over 100 miles! Kinda pricey, but good. fabulous place to eat while visiting the Searles Valley. Clean, tidy, and food is always excellent. Their ice cream cannot be beat and you can get an entire box of onion rings cooked to perfection. The outside benches have beautiful views across the dry lake to the Slate Mountains and Panamints. Also, this is often used as a movie set, so keep your eyes peeled in movies about the Mojave Desert. read more
