Deliciousness - 5/5 Happiness - 4/5 This restaurant is out of the way and I wasn't even sure it made sense to stop on the outskirts of the touristy areas. But I'm sure glad we did - this is a hidden gem with outstanding food and cool decor. We were looking for a reasonably priced, but still high quality, bistecca alla florentine (Florentine Steak). Note that a Florentine Steak is more than big enough for two, usually starting around 2 pounds. We eventually settled on this place and were really pleased. The steak was extremely flavorful and packed a big beefy punch into each of the numerous bites. Paired with perfectly seasoned potatoes and impressively plated, my wife and I really enjoyed this meal. I'm not usually a fan of rare steak, but when in Ro...errr Florence.... it's a must-try! We also had a liter of house wine (delicious and paired beautifully with the steak) and a very fresh and flavorful mozzarella and tomato salad. Every single thing was delicious and we were stuffed and happy afterwards. I also want to mention the decor, which itself is a treat. Decorated with hand drawn Disney sketches (I assume from artists who've eaten there) and some avant-garde art in a very rustic setting, my eyes never got tired of looking around. Limited seating makes this trattoria very cozy and homestyle. We had reservations(highly recommended) and got seated promptly. The bisteca florentine was good but the meat had quite a bit of gristle. read more

This is a nice, casual place near the train station or Piazza Indipendenza - it was recommended by our AirBnb host as well. I like that you can make reservations online and you should probably do that as they seem to be busy with visitors and locals alike. We had dinner early and it was full of local families with kids (so family friendly as well). We started with a charcuterie board which offered several kinds of cured meats, a few wedges of pecorino and local honey (which was incredibly delicious on the pecorino and bread!). And of course a liter of house rosso which was just fine for €10. For primi, the Mister picked carbonara which was creamy and wonderful and I envied him as he ate it. My pick was pici with a sausage and mushroom sauce which I thought was "good". I was sad that there wasn't a hint of sausage at all, anywhere in the dish but it was made up for by an abundance of tasty mushrooms which I normally don't like. I'm thinking they used porcinis because they were delicious. The Mister finished up with a good sized bistecca - I had a few bites and it was juicy and tender. Prices are pretty reasonable, the staff is nice and the space is inviting. Would return, but get the carbonara instead. read more

Stopped in this neighborhood spot for dinner. Very unassuming, but filled up quickly with locals including the utility workers from the neighborhood (which I always think is the best sign that a place has great food). I had the tagliatelle w wild boar ragu (my favorite) and it was delicious! read more

We found Guelfa while actually looking for another place via Yelp; however, we were so excited we found this little gem. You may have to walk roughly 7-10mins away from the touristy area heading north. You walk in and right away you find yourself stepping back in time. Arches leading down the stairs and such. We were served glasses of prosecco right when we walked in (free of charge) and because this is off the beaten path, you only find locals here. Bread was also served right away. We then ordered 1L of their casa rosso for 10euros. We asked for recommendations and were told that the seafood pasta and spaghetti with sausage and mushrooms were good. Of course we went ahead and ordered those along with a dish of gnocchi as well and we were very happy we did. All pasta dishes were between 9-10euros. Water was 1euro per .75L. Good wine, great food and company. Hands down one of the best near the touristy area. read more

We ate at Trattoria Guelfa on our first night in Florence. The kids were exhausted from running around exploring the city and historical sites and the heat. We just needed to get them fed and to bed. Our Airbnb was across the street and a few doors down. What luck! This restaurant is a gem! We were seated immediately. The service was kind and engaging. Vegan friendly pasta place. Tastes great. We had the regular spaghetti with tomato sauce and it was seasoned just right. It was much better than the other spaghetti we had in Italy. Another member of our party had the shrimp spaghetti and she said it was very good as well. The tiramisu was good as well. I like steak. I don't eat it a lot, but I like it. If this isn't the best steak I've ever had, I can't name the places that were better. Very, very juicy. And maybe all Florentino steak is great. But the ricotta and spinach stuffed pasta in a truffle cream sauce (!) was also just nuts. Incredible meal. read more

We had the bisteca amongst the table (delicious!) along with a couple pastas that satisfied my Italian-pasta needs. Not bad service, reasonably priced, but food was only so so. My wife and I were seated with our friends and our kids. 4 adults & 5 kids aged 8 to 13. They gave the adults a small glass of prosecco and the kids got the same glasses but with orange juice (no charge, or you could consider it included in the cover "coperto", which was €7.5 for our group). The menu covers a nice selection of starters, salads, pastas, meats, and deserts. One of my kids doesn't like pasta or pizza, so he had grilled pork. We also had the ragu noodles, tuna carpaccio, rigatoni al coccio, and a few set menus. The set menus were €20 & €25. For 20, you get pasta, steak or chicken, water, desert and caffe. For 25, you get pasta or cold cuts and cheese, 500g Florentine steak, biscotti, sweet warmed desert wine, and caffe. The tuna carpaccio (€10) was quite good. Thin slices on arugula. Nothing unusual or special. The pastas (€8-10) were all very good, with good flavors. They were 1st course sizes. The cold cuts and cheese were nice with a good variety of meats, and the Florentine steaks were very good and cooked perfectly to medium rare, as requested. Tiramisu was good, as was the biscotti and desert wine. The steak that came with the €20 set menu was just ok. It was only about 1/2 a cm thick. The big disappointment was with the grilled chicken and grilled pork (€10). Both were so dry that nobody wanted to eat them, and we left them only half eaten, if that. We were never offered caffe, and we left with mixed feelings. We had a reasonably pleasant meal, other than the complaints about the chicken and pork. Overall, pretty good value, and I would go back for pasta, and possibly the €25 set menu. Stay away from the grilled chicken and pork though. read more

Very homey, unpretentious food with good service. They gave us free house white wine and explained the specials to us (handwritten in Italian on the first page of the menu). Highlights: grilled branzino, ossobuccu, seafood pasta, and all the desserts we ordered (tiramisu, panna cotta with berry sauce, and cheesecake with berry sauce). We ate there tonight based on Yelp reviews and we weren't disappointed. It was a full house as they were hosting work crews from a local temporary project. These guys were hungry and demanding and the restaurant waitresses handled all the men with humor and grace, all while taking care of the rest of their customers. We had the Caprese salad, the parpadelle, and the gnocchi with a bottle of wine the waitress pulled right off the shelf on the wall. Everything was fresh, tasty, and delicious! Incredibly rude to tourists. We made an effort and spoke in Italian to order, ask for the bill, etc. We were snubbed and weren't given plates when needed -- I had to get plates from a center area while other tables were served plates. Waitress was rude throughout. Don't tourists support your city and bring you income? Food was great, service was beyond terrible. Wouldn't recommend. After 5 days of bad food recommendations from Monogram, and touristy salesman trying to drag you into their restaurants, we decided to go on yelp. We chose this restaurant because of the great reviews and boy was it well worth it. Excellent food scale for all four dishes we ordered, Osso Bucco, papadelli noodles with wild boar, fresh spaghetti noodles in cheese sauce and bacon served on a cheese crepe, walnut and pear ravioli in cheese sauce served also on a cheese crepe, ricotta cheesecake and butternut caramel pudding, 4 cappuccinos, and WINE!! $71 Euro!!!!! Right around the corner from where we were staying at, we found this amazing little restaurant. Quiet and quaint. The service was good and the food was awesome. You must try the mussels and clams!
