There are a zillion good Florentine restaurants in this old town neighborhood. What makes Trattoria Buzzino stand out? FOOD / DRINK - So there are a lot of things on the menu that look like what you can see at every trattoria around. But there are some small, subtle differences, tweaks in the descriptions and preparations and seasoning, home cooking and recipes, unique rustic elements. The tomato soup was chunky like a pasta sauce. The tartar was amazingly spiced. The beef stew (peposo) was heavenly. The octopus starter was a hit. The eggs in tomato sauce was enthusiastically consumed. And that's just what I can remember at the moment. Bottom line, there's some great food here that's a bubble off-plumb from the norm (in a good way). The wine list isn't monstrous, but covers all the bases. SERVICE - I walked there to put in a reservation, and the waitress who greeted me seemed sincerely happy that I was going to dinner (and not because nobody else was there). She wasn't around when we arrived, but the lady waiting on our table was friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and very welcoming. All the service beats were hit, and a bit of the "family" dining feel that makes an Italian restaurant so special. AMBIANCE - Here things are pretty conventional -- there's little about the decor to stand out from every other ristorante in a three block area. But there was nothing distracting or off-beat about it, either. It felt very homey and pleasant, which was just fine. NET-NET - Everyone really enjoyed the wide array of starters, entrees, sides, and desserts we ordered. It was all quite good and, despite eleventy-dozen other restaurants in the area, we may very likely return to this one before we leave town. read more

As one of our first meals in a wonderful epicurean food city that Firenze is, we had to try Pappardelle Pasta with Wild Boar Ragu. We chose Trattoria Buzzino for this specialty and it was worth it. While I had the above-mentioned dish, my dining companions had Uovo al Pomodoro and the Pici (Carbonara?). Along with a few glasses of Chianti, a couple of cappuccinos and a Bruschetta appetizer we had a great meal. The staff here seemed to be a husband and wife team and were very congenial and helpful. The wall decor had older menus framed from long ago. Apparently there has been one form of Buzzino around since 1844! There is a lot of character in Trattoria Buzzino with great staff and food. This was probably my favorite restaurant while visiting Rome/Florence. Small quaint spot near Uffizi, a few small tables outside and can probably fit 30 max inside. The (what I'd presume to be) owner was welcoming and while confused, didn't fully say no to me when I asked for tiramisu immediately before dinner as I simply needed it. It was awesome, creamier on top which I enjoyed and espresso plentiful. I got the "chicken nuggets" with lemon and spinach (lemon chicken breasts) which was well seasoned and tasted a perfect balance of lemon (almost a lemon cream sauce). My two friends split the florentine steak which they devoured (and loved). Felt very authentic here, staff rocked, would certainly return. read more

After being smitten by a concert from the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina at the Zefferelli Musem nearby, we felt as if we had walked into one of the Great Man's film sets. Early evening is all about the spritz in Italy as we learned on our 2 week vacation there. The most famous one is the Aperol Spritz with prosecco, club soda, and Aperol liquor which is a uniquely flavored orange liquor with gentian, rhubarb, and cinchona (among other ingredients.) We had several of these before wandering by Trattoria Buzzino one day and saw the words "Limoncello Spritz" handwritten on the chalkboard menu. Hold on now...we can combine our favorite Italian after-dinner aperitif, with our new favorite before-dinner spritz habit? Count us in! We came here just for the Limoncello Spritz (which we learned later is a little more pervasive throughout Italy than we realized...we even had a meloncello spritz in one place!) and loved the experience. Buzzino sits on a main-ish street (Does the center of Florence even have main streets?) on the way from the train station, by the Dumo, close to the river. It's been there since 1844! Despite it's central location it doesn't look or feel touristy at all. Had we come for a meal, having observed what was delivered to the tables near us, we would have been treated to fantastic-looking Tuscan dishes. Trattoria Buzzino is a not-so-hidden, not exactly off the beaten path, but easily unnoticeable historic gem. Well worth a stop. read more

We finished a walking tour of Florence and our guide recommended Trattoria Buzzino for dinner. OMG, I'm so glad he did. It's a bit off the busy streets, which was nice. It's a quaint and small place. Outdoor seating was just one row of small 2-person tables along the sidewalk. Nothing elaborate; but that's not why you go to small, personal restaurants, is it? You go for the charm, the intimacy of being served by (it seemed) the owner and, most importantly, amazing food. And, this place has that in abundance! The grilled chicken dish was tasty and cooked perfectly. The pasta and wild boar was delicious. Although there was only two choices of wine (red or white), they both were home made. I had red and it was delicious- a well balanced blend of Sangiovese and Merlot that paired very well with the red sauce. To top it off, the service was prompt, personal and friendly. Our tour guide, Natalia, recommended this place for its food and prices. It's centrally located and has a few tables outside, but we sat inside by the front left window to cool off from the intense August heat. Pasta is all made fresh in-house and was cooked al dente. Daily special octopus dish was cooked to perfection - not rubbery at all. Black truffle pasta was much more flavorful than the one I ate in Siena a few days ago. Panna cotta had a hint of lemon to it which was interesting but it worked well with the mixed berries sauce (alternative options were chocolate or caramel sauce). Everything was great! If I had one suggest for improvement, it would have been the bread brought to the table before the meal... we expected it to be crustier and crunchy, like the other bread we have eaten so far during our trip. All in all, we recommend this restaurant for its great food and fair prices. We would come back! read more

1st they tricked us with tourist prices (15 Euro) on the window flyer, and then when we were seated, they told us those prices are no longer applicable. Instead of paying 15 Euros for a meal our bill, together, at the end of the night was 54 euros. A pure scam for the tourist that comes and goes. 2nd the food was horrible. The meat was full of bone and gristle and there was a very little edible meat. It was very expensive. We also got a pasta dish that was worse then almost anything we've had at the cheapest of restaurants in the United States. I can't emphasize enough how disappointed I was in the experience and the the food. I've lived in Italy throughout my life and knows good restaurants in Florence. This is not one of them. read more

The food is amazing, I came back 2 days in a row. I've been all over Italy and this place ranks among the best. It's also incredibly affordable compared to lots of other places in Florence. Yet still very classy inside the restaurant. The service is great by Johnny the waiter, he speaks great English and makes you feel like you are at home. I also saw many locals dinning here too. It's right behind the exit to the Uffizi gallery and we were hungry after waiting 2 hrs in line and walking inside the museum for 3.5hrs so we went for the first restaurant we found, which is this one. First, service was terrible. The old man and his wife were extremely grumpy they were shouting and being annoyed bc one of us needs gluten-free dish. Then we found out that they were serving us tap water inside the bottle they gave us and pretended it was spring water so they could charge us for it. I ordered the insalata mare or the seafood salad and the mussels and octopus were not fresh that I got a diarrhea afterwards. Overall terrible service and poor quality food. Guests from other tables looked equally dissatisfied with the restaurant. One table walked away and left 3/4 of the wine they had ordered. I came across this fantastic trattoria on my way home after having enjoyed the view from piazzale Michelangelo. Although it is just around-the-corner from Uffizi museum, one of the most famous tourist destinations in Florence, the atmosphere inside was incredibly comfortable (clearly NOT tourist-oriented, given the restaurant has history of over 170 years since its opening) and we had literary GREAT experience here in terms of food, service and cost performance. Came across this place by accident when walking around downtown Florence. It's a little hole in the wall that has homemade pasta. I LOVED the salmon pasta I ordered - it was one of the best pasta dishes I have ever eaten. My husband ordered the wild boar pasta and really enjoyed it.
