Love love loved it! The limoncello cocktail was a great start to the meal, along with the warm, fresh French bread. My main entree of linguine with mussels, clams, and calamari (which I don't usually like unless it's fried) was DA BOMB. It's called fettuccine con frutti di mare, for my future reference. Super flavorful, well balanced, and that white wine sauce was chef's kiss. I looked forward to eating the leftovers the next day, without a doubt, and it's one of my favorite entrees anywhere. That says a lot! Michelle was our attentive and friendly waitress on our first visit. Husband got the chicken limone on both our meals here, and my kids devoured the cheese pizza and fettuccine Alfredo. We have yet to try dessert here because the allure of Graeter's across the street is too great. The dining room seats maybe 20 tables, and there's a small bar area in the back. Easy to make reservations online and recommend doing so, as we tried to walk in around 5:30pm on a Saturday and were turned away as all the tables were reserved, despite the dining room being 85% unoccupied. Oliverii is a cute place in downtown Northbrook. The atmosphere is warm, cozy and quiet, which our party appreciated because we could actually have a conversation! Our server was extremely friendly and attentive. Everyone in our party commented on how nice he was! I had the pumpkin ravioli which was on their special menu. The ravioli itself was incredible, but the almond cookie crumble on top was confusing and didn't add anything to the dish. Others got the meat lasagna chicken cacciatore which they both said was delicious! Someone else got the whitefish and said it was overcooked, but ate the pasta. The place was full and seems to do a good carryout business. There's a parking lot in the back which was convenient. read more

We went to Oliverli last night for dinner and, at first, it seemed like it was going to be a beautiful evening. We asked to sit outside, and the server told us to take any available table. Although there were only two of us, we sat at a four-top because there were several other open four-top and larger tables available. After we had been seated for about 10 minutes, received bread and water, and were looking over the menu, the server returned and told us that the owner wanted us to move to a two-top because they had reservations coming in. We agreed to move, but it felt strange given that there were still multiple empty four-top tables and even an open six-top available. Unfortunately, the food was even more disappointing than the seating situation. I was served what appeared to be a Caesar salad that had clearly been sitting for quite some time. The dressing was watery, the croutons were soggy, and the salad was warm rather than fresh and crisp. My husband ordered the chicken special, which tasted as though it had been cooked days earlier and reheated. The chicken was dry, and the potatoes were undercooked. I ordered a half portion of pasta, and the sauce was thin, oily, and lacking flavor. Overall, the combination of poor food quality and the way we were treated left us very disappointed. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this restaurant. read more

The service was good so I want to acknowledge that the people working at the restaurant were kind and tried really hard to make our dinner good. The food, that's a whole other story. We were a bigger group, 9 friends. They sat us in the bar area which was nice. We ordered bruschetta, salad and pizza. The bruschetta was awful. It was buttered toast with a lot of garlic and sliced tomatoes as if for a sandwich and dried powdered Parmesan cheese on top in a little mound. It was actually awful. The salads were poorly constructed and not dressed well. We had the pear and the Caesar. Both were not good. And the pizzas were the worst I've ever had. Sausage and cheese was sort of ok, the cheese was piled on and dripping over the side of the pizza and the sausage tasted not good. We ordered a tomato and onion and again got pale sliced tomatoes and white onions, so harsh, on top and sliding off. And the margarita pizza was crust with red sauce baked on til dry and blobs of mozzarella cheese that looked like goat cheese all over and unmelted. Absolutely awful. The bartender kept making some drink where he was lighting some sort of herb on fire over the drink and it made the bar area smell of a noxious smoke. At first we thought something was on fire in the air system. I wanted to like this local place and sadly the food was just terrible but the service was upbeat and friendly. So two stars for that and well, we won't likely be back. read more

A little peak of sunshine during this area's winter doldrums and suddenly it's like everyone has awoken from hibernation. We stopped by pizza place #1 and the parking lot was full. I said, let's try Yelp-suggested pizza place #2 and the line was out the door. As we were looking for parking I noticed Trattoria Oliverii (pretty empty - clue #1) so when we left the restaurant across the street I said, "let's try that place it's pretty empty." It's cute looking, from the bold neon name splashed across the window, cozy tables with tablecloths, wall of wine bottles in the front. The hostess asked if we had a reservation and we said no and she said sit anywhere you like (clue #2). The menu had traditional Italian entrees but since we were hankering for pizza, my companion said let's try the pizza. There were four pizza options (clue #3). We ordered the Oliverii Pizza Special which had sausage, pepperoni, bacon, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, black olives. The pizza was a disappointment (wah-wahhhh). The crust was doughy, chewy, tough. There was just a dab of sauce and the slightly cooked veggies were on top of the cheese. There were a lot of toppings stacked high, but they scattered all over the plate and table when trying to take a bite. We took one bite and I whispered, let's get ice cream across the street. We ate another slice to be polite and there was still 3/4 left. We asked to box it up to take away (trying to be nice). The server was polite and the patrons eating their pastas seemed to be enjoying their plates. Moreover some of them were probably regulars. I would not recommend the pizza. read more

This is one of three Italian restaurants in downtown Northbrook and I would say it's solid restaurant. The interior is bright and airy. There's a front room and a back room and the tables are jammed in the front room to squeeze every dollar out of every usable space. Our table was big enough to hold our plates and glasses, but if anyone ordered a side dish, they would have needed to give us a tray side table. Many different dishes were ordered and I wish I could remember what everyone ordered... My wife and I got a caesar salad to share. The salad was great, dressing was not overpowering (as is often the case at many Italian restaurants). As this was my first time at Trattoria Oliverii, I ordered the Pollo Limone (aka lemon chicken or chicken piccata). It was a really good dish. The sauce was not too thick nor was it overpowering. It was a great first impression! There was a fish special and my wife and two other people in our party got the special as well. All three said it was a good dish as well. Another in our party ordered the Lasagna Di Spinaci (spinach lasagna) and said it was very good. The restaurant was packed from start to finish and they let us stay and chat long after we finished our meals. I was very disappointed in the food. I had relatives in from out of town and decided to give it a try for the first time. The calamari was average, we did like the bruschetta. 2 diners had the bolognese and barely ate it and did not even take home. I had a salmon pasta and it tasted fishy and the red sauce did not mix well. The only diner who ate the dinner had the Fettuccini Alfredo so that was good. We ordered a piece of sausage to try and it was dry and had no flavor. Cute place and great service but they need a new chef or maybe we hit a very off night. read more

I took my mom after spending an afternoon at the Chicago Botanical Gardens in Glencoe. We ordered the chicken marsala which came with capellini - my mom raved that it was the best chicken marsala she's ever had. A complete disappointment. Our evening out celebrating my dear friends birthday we decided to try one of the other Italian restaurants within the 3 blocks Northbrook village. Upon entering we were greeted by the hostess, we were advised they were booked and quickly offered a seat at the bar. Which sounded fine until we entry the tiny room located near the rear entrance. We were greeted by the female bartender, who was also on the her cellphone. She gave us one food menu and one wine menu. She then explained their phones were down and she was trying to get help from the phone company. She came back to ask what we'd like, I ask for a second menu, she replied I only have one at the bar and she was on the phone. She gave me a scan code. I so wanted to ask her if her cellphone would allow her to walk to the front and get another, But I didn't. She returned after handing her phone to a man at the end of the bar. We order a bottle of wine and two appetizers. She quick turned around and never acknowledged what I ordered? She retrieve her cellphone from the guy. The hostess noticed us sitting there she ask if we had ordered I replied yes, but I'm not sure if she understood us, as she turned her back on us and never confirmed. The guy at the end of the bar, chimed in, "she didn't turn her back on you". ( I later overheard he was the cousin.) It was that moment I got Open table and found another restaurant in the area. We received our wine and appetizers, never once being asked if everything was okay until we had finished them. She asked we wanted to order entrées, and I replied I'll take our check, she seemed a bit surprised. The entire time she was juggling customers and her cell phone dealing with the phone company making sure everyone knew she was on the phone with the phone company. I get it we've all dealt with the phone company. Your restaurant guests don't need to know your phones are down, take care of it out the public's earshot, we don't need to hear your conversation with them. Our two appetizers were just okay, the calamari was over battered and the tomato slices in the Caprese salad were tough. Honestly it was a waste of $100.00. My wife and I dined there last night for the first time and it was fantastic. My wife ordered the veal Marsala and I the ordered the veal parmigiana. Both were delicious! The server, Emma, was friendly and diligent. The bread and the soup that came with our meal was also excellent. Ive been going to this place for 20 plus years, and once (90s) I went and had a dish with mussels. Boy was it good. The place been pretty good to me for a while. Couple of months ago I went and ordered the "same" dish but it looked so different. Just a lot of shells full of tiny meat. The pasta was ok, sauce,ok. But i struggled with the pointless shells. Until I bit into something that was not right, very very foul. I'm sorry to have to say this, but the food here is mediocre and not getting better with time. We've been coming here for years but I think that's it. Hostess is extremely rude. We had someone with a disability in our party of 8 and they would not let us take our seats until the 8th person, who was 5 minutes late, arrived... despite restaurants being entirely empty at 5pm on a weeknight. She also asked us to move our infant in a bassinet to the other side of the fence to make room. Completely ridiculous. The food is mediocre at best. If it weren't in Northbrook it wouldn't be anything to write home about. It's also right by the train crossing, so you better like hearing trains. read more

My wife and I have been coming to this local Italian restaurant for over thirty years. It was always great and reliable. Then things started to change with new people hired and it started to go downhill. I am happy to say that new ownership has brought it back to its old reliable self. I always enjoy the whitefish livernese and the salmon. All pasta dishes are great. The bread is crusty and delicious. Soups and salads and drinks also excel. Heartily recommended. Such a cute place with below average food. Confusing to park. It turns out you can park in back and walk in the back door. Started out with a caprese salad. Nothing special but edible. Went down from there. I ordered the grilled salmon with vodka sauce on the side. I got a plate of plain pasta and a bowl of bland vodka sauce with chunks of salmon in it. What? Why would the salmon be cut up and put in the sauce I asked for on the side?. I tried to suck it up and eat it but just couldn't. Got a personal pizza instead. It was fine but nothing special at all.
