Well I have been here twice in the past few months and both experiences have been very good. It was for car registration renewal and also have been here for title transfer too. First off plenty of parking here. You walk in and there's a kiosk that sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't so you get to talk to human being! Yay! You tell them the reason why you're here and they ask you if you have the appropriate documentation- which is nice because you don't have to wait for nothing if you forgot them. I ask you for your phone number and give you a ticket number and you get a text immediately. Plenty of room in the waiting area as it's wide open. Your number is queued up on TV and their PA system is loud enough where you can hear your number called. Every person that I've dealt with here has been very nice and professional and patient and courteous. Even when I have had to ask questions, they know the answers immediately, which is great. It's pretty straightforward. I like this location much better than the Airport Blvd location as it's a much more pleasant visit. The previous place was somewhat cramped, it had a very small waiting area, and sometimes you had to stand. It was also very loud and when they called your number you had to go walk through the maze of cubicles, kind of like a labyrinth. I never had any issues finding where I needed to go, but this layout here is much better and wide open, which is probably one of the reasons why they moved here. I'm not a fan of their new website which seems cleaner and less jargon, but there's too many clicks to get to your destination. Plus, it's also not that intuitive as it looks. And I'm also not happy that the State is now charging a $4.75 "fee" to renew your registration online, otherwise this would be a 5-star review. I used to pay around $55 to renew car registration but now it's $76. That's Bologna. But the worker bees here don't set the prices so it's not their fault. They just take your money and then you hear a loud "cash register chime" (cha-Ching!) soon after. I was just kidding about that - lol. read more

One of the better government offices in Austin. Although busy and understaffed, people here are polite, friendly, and efficient to the extent they can while short on hands. There was not a lot of windows open on Friday so I had to wait for about an hour, but it wasn't horrible. I didn't even care since I was working on my laptop while waiting. read more

Arrived on a Thursday at 720AM. About 12 people ahead of me in line. They open at 730AM which they did exactly on time. Once doors open they allow those with appointments to come to front of line, there were about 12 folks who had online appointments ( I checked the day before and the next one was early September). No problem parking in the lot either. So you enter, use your camera to scan a code and check in with Name and the service appointment you need ( i.e. License and Registration, Plates, etc,,) for you can choose to use the kiosk. Very easy to do. Lots of seating and a monitors all over to see when you number is called and what station number to go to. If you sign up on your phone they will also text you when a clerk is available to assist and which station number to go to. My appointment was called with 6 minutes, and they were super friendly and helpful! As I have always found the folks there to be. I was done by 748AM and on my way! So yes, depending on where you live, the drive can be a bit crazy with all the construction on 183, but once you get there, great service. Thank you! tried to pay property taxes online didn;t work, twice on the phone tried to pay, both times told an unknown error occurred and to call back later. Spoke to someone on the phone their attitude is this is your problem, come in person, but we might not be taking anymore people when you get here. read more

Besides the long waits. The service was fine for a walkin. There was plenty of seating while I waited for service. Just make sure you read the requirements ahead to make your trip there go faster. read more

New to Texas. Needed to get my car registered in Texas. Saw how many people favorably used this locations' services. Friday afternoon after 3pm when I arrived. 38 minutes later, I was walking out to my car with new Texas plates. Friendly, Efficient, Helpful, Knowledgeable, and Professional. That was my experience today. Wow ! Just Wow. David was the agent that helped me today, at window 7. He was absolutely all of the characteristics I described and more. Very impressive. read more

The last time I had to go to the tax office they were located on Airport Blvd in cramped quarters shared with the Travis County courts. They moved a couple years ago to bigger digs near the 183/290 intersection. You'll have to take a side road off the 290 access road and turn right after passing a few office parks. At first I was upset that they moved since the old office was just a little over a mile away but this location has way more parking and is allot more roomier than the older location. I couldn't find the drive-thru so a star off for that but since it was a one of those record cold mornings and the start time for most schools was delayed there was hardly anyone there and we only had to wait for four people ahead of us inside. Check in was simple just provide your name and cell at the kiosks. The touch screens have some lag so make sure to press slowly and accurately or else you'll have to redo the entry. There's someone up by the kiosks to answer questions. Plenty of seating and even some shared tables should you need more room to fill out paper work or work remotely while waiting. Just remember to read and fill out all paper work and make sure you have all the required documents to save future trips. If you need cash they even have some ATMs. read more

I've called a dozen times over a decade, and I've found people to be uniformly informed, patient and helpful. They know their stuff and care. Lately that's been Maria Gonzales, but I wish I had the names of all the people I've spoken with because they're great. Brittany must be doing a great job with her people. This takes forever. You should budget 4 hours. My first visit was 3.5 hours and the second was 4.5 hours. Chances are you'll need to come back anyway. Here's a way around it: Show up and take a picture of the registration QR box (link below). I've been to this office multiple times to get new license plates and for other issues, but I've never gotten around to putting up a review yet. Whenever I've shown up, I keep thinking of the quote "Quantity has a quality all its own." This is the main office branch, and appropriately gets the most traffic. On the plus side, it's relatively convenient to get to and the personnel for the most part do their best with a heavy caseload. On the negative side...the big issue is parking during the peak or near-peak times. It's also usually something of a wait inside, and be prepared to be rubbing elbows with strangers. But hey, they're your fellow Austin residents, so smile and say hello (or leave them alone if they're reading/sleeping/on the cell phone). Pro Tip 1: Highly recommend that whether you have an appointment or not, try to book on the off hours. Pro Tip 2: If you can't suck it up and prepare to walk in from far down the lot. Pro Tip 3: When I went, there was a $3 service fee for using plastic. Take cash or a checkbook. Pro Tip 4: Smile! You'll get better service if you don't take a bad attitude in with you to the government clerk doing their best to serve a grumpy public. read more

It was time to renew a placard. OK, made an appointment, and had a time set that was about 10:30 AM. Got there in plenty of time after getting lost a few times due to new construction. Then into the small parking lot. Around and around I go. No open spots. Then magically a spot appears and a car coming up the wrong way grabs the spot. It was not worth getting in a fight with someone twice my size, so I kept looking. I gave up and went into the drive up lanes. Now there are two lanes that lead into 3 drive ups. Which is faster? Actually, the folks directing the lanes pretty much equaled it out. Now, I was about 1/2 way down and realized that I would soon be having to go to the bathroom. No worries, I could hold it (I had no choice as there are barriers dividing the cars so once you are in line you are committed). Finally my turn. I have everything at the ready. There are tubes where you put all your stuff in and then punch a button and off it goes. Not in my case. I simply could not fit the placards, TDL, and paperwork in the little tube. Then suddenly my TDL comes flying out and goes under the seat. Rats. So I open the door and realized I had pulled up too close and could not get the door open far enough to get out and look under the seat. I could not back up as the car behind me was right on my tail and the one behind them the same. So I punched the talk button and said I would have to come back. Out I went. Tried the parking lot again with no luck and got back into line. Much later I had success since I had found my TDL and wrapped it in the paperwork and rolled the placards pretty tightly. In hindsight, I would have had a strong rubber band. Then zoom, gone and heading in the wrong direction. Turned around and finally made it home and rushed into the bathroom just in time. Learned a good lesson though! read more

Was dreading getting a new passport and realized nearly all of the post offices in my area were booked out for months. This tax office came in clutch with their ability to do walk-ins! Granted I made sure to wait in line starting at 6:30 to guarantee I'd be able to have a spot when they opened at 8, but honestly it seemed like people who had arrived much later than me were able to go in not too long after me. It's a fairly new, clean building and all the people I interacted with were friendly. Would highly recommend this place if you need a new passport application submitted/ renew passport if you can't book an appointment elsewhere! read more

Not sure how to write a lower review. The entire TCAD is the biggest SCAM in the state. The assessments are way off base - you protest them and they make up data without any evidence and the "independent board" who barely is paying attention on a zoom call just agrees with the lies. I guess we shouldn't be surprised that our government officials lie and those under oath make up stuff. For this particular office - I had an appointment to pay my taxes - which I made way in advance as I travel a bunch. When I got to the office they were closed. even though they kept sending me reminders about my appointment. The time, gas, wear and tear etc means nothing as they could not me more thoughtless in taking care of the citizens that pay their salary. read more

Wow! When I walked up to the building and saw the long line of people outside waiting to get in, I knew I would be blowing a whole day. I asked the lady at the door if the line was for people with appointments. She said yes. Nearly lost my balance, I said I don't have an appointment. She pointed to the glass window and said that I can make an appointment by calling the number or the website. I can't make appointments because I don't know my work schedule far enough in advance. She asked me what I needed. I said that I registered my car online but I've never got my tags in the mail. She said, oh well you can go through the drive thru. Thank God, cause that line was like 3 cars deep, not 150 people deep! Didn't take long at all to get to the drive thru window. I placed my paperwork in the tube and sent it. She gave my my paperwork plus the tags. And that was it. Simple easy, and she was super nice and understanding. Great experience. read more

Confusion and frustration!! The old tax office wasn't great, but it worked. If you had a long wait, someone could tell you. I arrived over an hour ago for what I thought would be a quick transaction. I need my auto registration renewed. Form the moment I exited the car there was nothing but confusion. A sign on the building pointed to a dark corner for the entrance. There were 2 doorways, both dark, neither marked. A policewoman out front pointed me towards the entry -- both lead into a narrow hallway. I stood behind people cued in line. After several wasted minutes I saw there was a QR scanner. Someone pointed Soren the hall and I saw the crowded waiting room jammed with people. After about a half-hour I realized the monitors were useless! I have an R number and the same R numbers are on the screen labeled "next up" and "now calling." I finally asked a woman at one of the numbered desks who wasn't serving anyone if she could tell me how much longer I would be waiting. She directed me to desk 1. It was there, after waiting for another confused person to get his info, that I was told there was only 1 person in front of me. That was a half-hour ago! So I'll going to stand in line again at desk 1 and hope someone will return to help all of us out with simple, basics information about how much longer we have to suffer this aggravation!! BTW, the same R #'s are on the next up and now calling screens! Major flaws here, I know you can do better! read more

I'll keep this short and simple. No one enjoys visiting the Tax County office for whatever needs they may need. The last time I visited one I waited 2-ish hours for a sticker so my car could get its new registration sticker. This time, I was smarter. My husbands sticker expired at the end of this month, so we figure we'd have to make the trek to the office. For some reason we never get the green paper for renewal to bring to H-E-B anymore... but never fear, make an appointment online, show up at said time, and presto, your appointment holds the power to bump you to the top of the queue. Because of that magicalness that is reservations, we were in line for 30 seconds and in and out! Especially with a packed house with all seats taken, it's not a fun place to deal with line waiting. 5 stars for effectiveness, note $3 service fee for using credit cards and none for cash or check. Ps. Use the south entrance, and left door takes you to marriage license and right side takes you to all other important things! Yay abundant parking. read more

Horrible experience. Set an appointment 3 weeks ago to get Clear title for a vehicle I own that I paid off 4 years ago to Honda financial. I found out after Honda telling me they weren't sending me the Clear title-just the Lien(and that I needed to fill out form 130-U and bring that with my DL and some funds to the tax office to get my Clear title. I did get called quick after signing into my smart phone but the clerk had No knowledge/experience and instructed me to go to the DPS off Parmer instead??!? After 3 weeks of waiting(3 weeks is the soonest they could set me an appointment), I'm handicapped so even then it was a day of it, it was so disappointing that on the phone they told me they could handle the title but when I got there, they said they couldn't and that Honda should have sent me the Clear title years ago. I kept explaining over and over, I understand, but they didn't, please help. No, he told me, you need to go to the DPS off Parmer. I asked if they made appointments for the handicapped and he didn't know. As it ended up, I was at the Right place to begin with-the Tax office clerk was just clueless as to his job and didn't know what he was doing at my expense. Hope you have better luck. I guess that considering the enormous volume of people who pass through their doors, the Travis County Tax Office is actually doing a fairly good job. The folks who work there are generally veterans in this field and fairly knowledgeable. I did also get registered to vote which is good. (I had moved so needed to reregister.) read more

After years of going here to renew my registration and waiting for ever for my number to be called, I found out they have a drive thru. Oh my goodness the drive thru is fast and friendly. I almost do not want to share this tip. This location is also very efficient for early voting as well as obtaining or renewing Passports. The only negative to this location is that parking is always at a premium. Best option is to look for a spot on the South end of the parking lot. Pro Tip: Bring cash or a check for registration fees and/or property tax payments. If you use a Credit or Debit Card you will incur a 3% fee. read more

I am shocked at what a good experience I had at a govt office...especially when it came to getting my registration sticker (which I never received in the mail!). I had come prepared for a battle royale w/disgruntled govt employees, but was greeted by the nicest receptionist who was actually HELPFUL and told me that the wait time inside was about an hr, but via the drive-thru it was only about 30mins. So I went through the drive-thru and the gal was really nice about helping me get my sticker AND waived the re-issue fee! Very pleasantly surprised by my experience here... read more

I mailed 3 checks for my properties end of Dec. I then checked with Travis county mid-Jan and they said they only got one check and 2 checks are probably lost and advise me to put a stop check on the other 2. I put in a stop check on the other 2 with my bank. I then checked with Travis County a few days later and they said all the taxes for 3 properties have been paid and gave me receipts. In Feb, they send me delinquent tax on 2 properties. I had to pay a fine of over $1500. I find it highly unjust that because of incompetence of Travis County I have to suffer. Highly recommend not mailing checks to Travis county they have a huge backlog and prone to losing checks and also applying checks to the wrong accounts. read more

My car registration needed updating after being expired, so I prepared to wait in the drive through line. I arrived at 8:50 and two very kind ladies told me if I wait in the walk in line which opens at 9, it usually is a quick turn around. I figured I'd try it since the drive through line had 30 cars. As soon as the office opened I was in and out with my new car registration in less than 10 minutes. I highly recommend getting there early waiting in the walk in line, as the appointment line didn't have any available appointments until a month later and the actual line was longer than the walk in line. So I have been here a few times and have yet to have a nothing but positive experience. I went months back without an appointment and it took about an hour to be seen. This time around I booked an appointment and was in and out within 8 minutes. I am not joking. Took me longer to drive there. The staff was helpful and nice and parking was just fine. I honestly think if you go in here prepared, you'll come out fast, satisfied, and all with very little stress. I'll list the most important things to remember before you stop in. 1. Make an appointment online. I didn't the first time and I sat and waited for 2 hours. 2. Read everything you can before you go in, or call, because if you are missing the smallest form, or ID, then you'll not be able to complete your mission. Be prepared, or even over prepared. 3. Go during an off time. This should be a no brainer, but the parking lot gets crowded and it's hard to find a seat. If you decide not to make an appointment, they have outlets to charge your phone and wifi for your laptop, get some work done or watch Netflix and wait for your turn. read more
