Honestly, although the food was a solid 4/5, the service on NYE was atrocious. We made reservations for 8:15 pm, and we showed up promptly on time. We had to wait another 30 minutes before we were seated. It would not have been another 20 minutes before we got our bottle of wine. Let alone another 1 hr after that before we got our food, which in that time we finished our bottle of wine. The food came out well, and like I said 4/5, however the kitchen was not ready for NYE, and what seemed like would be an hour meal, we spent till 10:15 in the restaurant, where 75% of the time was waiting on our food. In all honesty, I might be willing to give this establishment another opportunity and bump up the rating to 4/5, but based my NYE experience I would not recommend. We had a 10:30 event to attend to at Mohegan sun and it would've been more than adequate time had we been seated at our reserved time, and gotten served food promptly after. Even if we were able to finish by 9:30-9:45 it would have been more than reasonable. But, given the timing it was safe to say the kitchen, nor the staff were ready for NYE. read more

I came prepared to dislike this restaurant, and left a fan. I was in a group of 5 for a birthday dinner. The waiter was incredibly nice and patient. One person in my party asked if they could make a particular sauce for a pasta, and the waiter was more than gracious. We shared the appetizer sampler. The mozzarella wrapped in escarole & the calamari were quite wonderful (the calamari had this perfectly breaded, light taste to it; I only wish it had come with a lemon on the side). The swordfish dinner was also a complete hit-- I've never had restaurant-served swordfish cooked more perfectly. The squash risotto was a bit salty, but was still tasty. If I hadn't been stuffed by that point, I would have finished it all. I didn't pay for the meal, but even if I had, I would have considered it worth it. This is definitely a nice place if you're going to treat yourself. Afterwards, we stepped out into the warm night & walked the short block to Libbys for italian ice and cannoli. The appetizer, Palle Di Risotte, was the best we have ever experienced in an Italian restaurant . It was enough to split. My main course was the Vitelli Gagliardi and it was excellent. I love the area where Tre scalini is located- Little Italy! On a warm night, the place is alive with a buzz of activity. Parking was limited- so if you have reservations somewhere, give yourself some extra time to find parking. I came here for restaurant week and had a pretty nice dinner and left very full. Both my boyfriend and I agreed, though, that the meal wasnt anything worth bragging about and concluded that we could make the same quality of meals on our own accord. Food: For starters my boyfriend ordered the baked eggplant and pomodoro sauce, which was very very good, and came with a heavy helping of eggplant. I ordered the baked apple, rock shrimp & marscarpone cheese stuffing, balsamic vinegar drizzle. I was excited about my appetizer as it sounded amazing, but the overall taste fell short of my expectations. The apple used needed to be sweeter and the shrimp and cheese stuffing just didnt work for me. Overall , the tastes did not come together all that great. I dont know how else to say it, other than it was....weird. Moving on to our main dish. my boyfriend ordered Rigatoni Domenica: rigatoni pasta, classic sunday sauce served with a meatball and braised pork loin. According to him, it was just ok. The presentation didnt really make sense, because the pasta came in the bowl, with a single pork chop on top. you couldnt cut through the pork that well -being in the bowl and all- a flat dish would have been better. I ordered the Bistecca Pizzaiolo: braised beef, mushrooms, onions, potatoes, pomodoro sauce. This was like a stew on a plate...it was full of flavor and the meat just fell apart and melted in my mouth. I couldnt finish it, but it was pretty delicious, but again nothing that I couldnt make myself. Dessert time: we both ordered the Cioccolato Bianco Crostata: shortbread tart, white chocolate mousse stuffing, and fresh berries dessert. OH MY GOD, I want this everyday. with every meal. It was delicious. We were so full by the end of our 1.5 hours at Tre Scalini that we couldnt even finish our wine (sinful, I know). Other reviews have said that this place is the most romantic place in New Haven. I didnt get that vibe, but maybe it was affected because of restaurant week. maybe my boyfriend could have bought me flowers before to kick start a romantic night? Who knows. Visited for lunch again, and quality is still spectacular. I ate with 2 co-workers and we each left stuffed to the gills. Here's a quick run down of our meal: Started with the fresh bread basket, included pan bread and plain italian bread. Both were warm and slightly toasted. This came with butter and cured black olives. No olive oil was provided for dipping, but I can overlook that. Appetizer: Antipasti platter. This came with fresh mozzerella layered with tomato slices and fresh basil. Cheese and basil were great, you could tell the tomatoes are out of season and their flavor was not as good as it could be. Thick slices of parmesean cheese were paired with slices of prosciutto. These two strong flavored items matched well together. Pickled vegetables, including cauliflower/carrots/red peppers looked tasty, but I didn't try any of them. Salad: Fresh baby greens mix with a light, balsamic vinegarette and assorted veggie slices (cucumber, carrot, baby tomatoes). This was light and a good opening for our meals. Lunch Entrees: I got the Papardelle Al Telefono. This was papardelle pasta, 2 whole lobster claws and a few pieces of claw-knucle meat in a light pink sauce. Flavor was fresh and light, just rich enough. I did have to add a tiny bit of salt once the seafood bites were gone (a big portion of pasta), as they were providing a natural saltiness. Portion was more than I could finish, and I know this type of sauce doesn't reheat well so I didn't get a doggie bag this 1 time. One co-worker got the cavatelli bolognese. He was very impressed on the amount of meat in the sauce and said several times it was delicious. Second co-worker got the crab raviloi in seafood bisque. He didn't talk much but he was 1 step away from licking his plate. I think he enjoyed it. We were far too full to have dessert, although in the past I have had the tartufo and it was great. The bill for the three of us was $55 before tip. I don't think was too bad as there were two seafood heavy meals which drove up the price a bit. Excellent fare but rather expensive. My wife and I always choose to go to here on special occasions when we don't mind splurging on food. A typical night will set you back $75 or more, but it is worth it if you can find something that appeals. We have found two dishes that are well worth returning again and again for. My wife's favorite entree is a special request for the kitchen, Steak Au Poivre made with filet mignon. It comes with an excellent brown sauce, mashed potatoes and mixed veggies. It is usually far too much food, so I eat some of it off her plate. The filet is always done perfectly when we ask for it medium-rare. My favorite entree is Veal ala guiseppe. It is pieces of veal cooked within a rich mixture of onions, peppers and a salty brown sauce... I am no expert on the ingredients, all I know is that it is delicious and it reheats well the next day. Invariably there is far too much food, so it goes home for lunch the next day. Dessert can be hit or miss. The Creme Brulee is sometimes overdone, so we usually skip it and head to Sally's up Wooster Street for some expensive pignoli cookies. read more

My husband chose this restaurant to celebrate our 49th wedding anniversary last night. We have celebrated other occasions there and always enjoyed it. Last night when we entered the restaurant it was through the bar. As soon as we entered, I was ready to leave. The bar area was full. HELLO!!! COVID 19??? The people were all standing around... ok, no chairs. What one of the men was saying to a woman was so disgusting and crass he should have been thrown out. Then we heard he's a lawyer. Is that why he can get away with such horrible behavior??!! It was like being exposed to the scum of the earth. I DoorDashed this place. So this review may be a little inaccurate. My complete dissatisfaction was with the DoorDash driver and not at all with the restaurant. We ordered the eggplant parm, palle di risotti and the tiramisu. Let's start off the with appetizer. The Palle Di Risotti was nothing I have had before. A breaded cheese ball doused in vodka sauce, sign me up!!! It was crispy, soft and cheesy on the inside combined with the vodka sauce. Simply delicious. Next we had the eggplant parmigiana. I have had many eggplant parmigiana in my life, but this place does it different. It's not just a slab of eggplant and parmigiana cheese. It was thinly sliced in layers, and had cheese in every layer. If I had to compare it, I would say it's like a lasagna with eggplant instead of dough. Needless to say, it was so good. With every bite, you also have the penne underneath, the sauce was excellent. Finally we have the tiramisu. I am not one for sweets, but this was great. Great happy hour with fresh oysters and live music. We sat on the patio, listened to wonderful music and enjoyed the special happy hour menu. Definitely try the eggplant rollatini. The sauce was delicious and the whole thing was just so tasty. My friend is watching her diet so she had a really satisfying salad with grilled chicken. Service was prompt, cocktails were generous. Booked my mom's 96th birthday party for a private room for which I was told can be completely closed off. I week passed and mentioned that I'd like to drop off deposit for which I was told "not to worry. If there was a problem they had my number." I mentioned that I would be out of town and they assured me it was ok. Well, went there tonight to leave the deposit and had a lovely meal however, not only did they overbook but even if I was able to keep the private room the owner said they cannot close the doors off to main dining. The reason why I specifically chose this venue was because I was told they can close it off. So, even if they didn't overbook and I had the room I would have had to cancel because I was given erroneous information. To add insult to injury, I ordered 2 glasses of wine. With a F-up like that you would think that the owner would have comp'ed at least the wine. NOPE! I even overheard the lovely waitress ask him and he said no. That was a BIG, 4 star mistake. One of my favorite restaurants, still is. We went on Saturday night 2/28. My girlfriend and I have our favorite dishes. Filet Mignon with lobster and mushrooms and Crab cakes. I dream of their crab cakes. I do not enjoy reviewing my favorite dish with disappointment. They were made with claw meat instead of lump. This change for crab cake lovers is significant. The whole recipe changed. They were very flavorful, but, were mush. The aoli was great. It was served with a dressed green salad instead of the familiar wilted. Overall, tasty, but just not up to their usual standard. My friend absolutely loved her Filet Mignon. They could not make me an Alabama Slammer so they mixed me up a fantastic concoction instead. Service was fantastic! I went to Tre Scalini with my boyfriend on a Friday night and were seated promptly. We ordered half a bottle of wine which got us about 2 glasses each. We ordered calamari as an appetizer which was delicious; fried but not heavy. I ordered the filet mignon, medium rare which came with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. The steak was cooked perfectly. My boyfriend ordered Zuppa di pesce with white sauce which was very tasty. We were too full for dessert but ended up ordering another glass of wine each. My family and I have been Tre Scalini customers for the past 18 years. I celebrated earning my Master's Degree at Tre Scalini, and nearly every year, my husband and I have made it a point to visit at least once a year, celebrating special occasions such as birthdays or an anniversary. We hadn't been in a while; mostly because we've been very busy running our children all over the place for their various activities. When I saw that they had a deal with Living Social, I decided to purchase it, and we'd make it a point to find time in our schedules to get back and visit one of our favorite places. My best friend and I decided to leave our husbands home with the kids and head out for an early girls' dinner. Before we left, I checked out reviews on Yelp and Trip Advisor, hoping to stumble on a suggestion for an entree that I hadn't yet tried, but had received particularly high marks from a patron. Instead, what I was surprised (and disappointed) to find, were several poor reviews from recent customers that addressed concerns with everything from food quality, to ambiance, to service. We decided to go anyway, and give an old favorite the benefit of the doubt. What a mistake. When we arrived for our 5:00 reservation, we found the majority of the staff (waitress and 2 guys whose uniforms suggested they worked in the kitchen) sitting at the bar and watching tv. The host was polite and gracious, and led us through a completely empty dining room to a table by the window. When the waitress came to take our order, I explained that I had a Living Social offer to redeem and asked her whether she would prefer to have it at the beginning or the end of the meal. She said that the end of the meal would be fine. After she left the table to give us time to review the menus, we had a chance to really look around. Our menus were falling apart, and were dirty. The carpet in the room is filthy, and needs to be completely replaced. The waitress then sat another pair of women at a table nearby. They sat, took one look at the menus, the carpet, and the empty dining room and said to each other (we heard them), "We can't stay here! Let's make something up- we need to go someplace else!" I had read in the reviews that other people had recently had that exact same response! When the waitress brought over our appetizers (the RISOTTO CON PARMESAN E FUNGHI and the PANE COTTO), she also brought a bowl of grated cheese. After she placed the appetizers on the table, she used her finger to take all of the cheese from the edges of the bowl, and swipe it back into the bowl! My friend and I enjoyed the appetizers and decided to pass on the manhandled cheese. Our salads (she got the Caesar and I got the arugula) were well-portioned; however, they had far too much dressing. Neither of us finished our salads- the overabundance of dressing had ruined them. Here's what really wrecked the evening for us. When the waitress brought the check, we gave her our Living Social voucher (we went with the paper voucher). She took the voucher (which was worth $40), and cash to cover the remainder of the check. She came back to the table about 5 minutes later and said, "Yeah, here's the problem. Your voucher won't work. We've had this problem before. Living Social never entered your code in their database. You're going to have to pay for the whole check, and then call Living Social tomorrow and ask them for a refund." Ummm...what? A refund would only get me $20 back. This offer was for $40.00 off of the check. I explained this to the server, and then showed her my Living Social account on my smartphone, which showed that the voucher was active and had not yet been redeemed. I also explained that since I was showing that the voucher was still waiting to be used, that the redemption issue was between the restaurant and Living Social. She then said (are you ready for this???), "We didn't even want to do the Living Social. I don't even know why we did it. This is your issue. You'll have to pay the $40 and deal with Living Social on your own." When I asked to see the manager, she said there wasn't anyone working. I then explained that in actuality, I only owed them $20, as that was my portion of the Living Social deal. I also explained that in the interest of positive business practice, they ought to be handling this on their end. The waitress continued to be loud, inflexible, and most definitely not reflecting the level of courteous service we have always had at Tre Scalini. In the end, she called the owner on the phone, and he agreed to accept the voucher, but only if I wrote my address and phone number on it. This was the icing on the cake! We will definitely not be back. Due to the horrible service and poor condition of the restaurant, we have sadly closed the book on a place that has been a family favorite for 18 years. read more

I'll have to split my review into three parts. The food: I've been here 3 times, and the food is always delicious. They also have a pretty good wine menu with enough choices to make anyone happy. I saw some other reviews that didn't rank the food so high, but it was always good for me so I'd give it 4/5 stars. The decor: Hideous and outdated, but who cares when the food is tasty? Probably 2/5 stars. The service: This is why I have a one star review for Tre Scalini. As stated, I've been here 3 times, each time with my boyfriend. The first time we came we noticed our waitress was painfully awkward and confused, but the food was good so we chocked it up to an "off" night - maybe she was new, maybe all the other people that were weird and awkward (see: guy who greeted us at the door) and new as well. Oh well. The next time we went, the story was the same - except it was the same waitress from before. Since it was probably a year+ since our first visit, we now knew that she wasn't new or having a bad day, she was just a bad waitress. The food was still enjoyable, but we did spend a considerable amount of time waiting to be greeted/served/etc. We should have stopped with that weird visit - but, I stupidly insisted that we try them out AGAIN - probably another year after our 2nd awkward meal. This was the straw that broke the camel's back. The greeter was the same unfriendly dude, and our waitress was the same unfriendly lady. We ordered a half bottle of wine - and, I sh*t you not - she actually laughed at our order. She then said, "Uh, is that going to be enough for the both of you?" to which my boyfriend responded Yes, since we ordered it *specifically* because it would be enough, and because we didn't need more. If there's a problem with your customers ordering a half bottle, don't have them on your menu. The service lagged, the food took forever to get out, and I think we wound up being stuck in their 80s era dining room for over 2 hours total. My boyfriend emailed the restaurant to let them know about their awful waitress since this was our 3rd experience with her being a moron, and never got a response. I'm sure he was much more civil in his email than I'm being here. So, poor customer service on the part of management as well. So, therefore, you should skip Tre Scalini. L'Orcio has better food, better decor, and better staff - so does Goodfellas and Adriana's. Also - if you want to deviate from Italian on a menu, try Roia - great French & Italian. Don't waste your time with a "main-stay" restaurant when there's so many other wonderful places so close by! read more

So after just having ventured to Ralph N Richie's the other night, I am so tempted to give this 5 stars, even 6 if I could because that is how deplorable RNR was! But in all fairness, I must treat this review fairly and give it 4 stars. We had received a gift certificate to this place from our kids and we were slow on jumping on the bandwagon to go given all the many so-so reviews. The many times we have made our way to Wooster street to come here and have seen Sally's "line-ness" (I know not a word, but you get my point) we have veered paths but last night, although no lines in mid July for Sally's we stayed with our set course and made our way to Tre Scalini. From the outside, the place seems big...we were a little confused on entrance and walked around to find it to be a walk up entrance. Place is cute as you entered their sloped walk up to the bar and then a small room with tables then down a small flight of stairs to a bigger amorphous room with some serious window treatments, baroque like paintings and chandeliers. Maybe a little over the top for some but I have seen much worse--honestly place looked fine to me--in par with Camella Sopranos Home, put properly. I was just a little perplexed as to why they don't have their window treatments steamed since they're so wrinkled, but face it, it is a restaurant, not a sample floor sale for Calico Corners so lets get back to food talk... Waiter greeted us very polished and took our drink order and appetizers. Martinis are served in midgets glasses but they were good. Appetizer consisted of Fried Calamari with Garlic and Cherry peppers in a tomato sauce (New York Style Calamari)--for all you ANTI-TENTACLES, this dish is for you....rings, rings and then some....no sign of anything jabbing out of your dish with curls and such. This generous platter had some boost and flavor. We both loved it. Pane Cotta came in its own little baked in casserole dish with traditional broth, escarole, tomatoes and beans...very tasty--not the best but very good and would order again. Main course were the Cavatelli Bolognese which was true bolognese sauce with some great home made Cavatelli which was cooked to perfection and each piece sat individually in its red meaty sauce ready to be indulged--a sign of true AL DENTE. The Osso Bucco was served with a parmesan risotto--parmesan risotto was scrumptious and good--not mushy and had the right texture with that perfect creaminess. The Osso Bucco was good, but lacked a little flavor--wasn't disappointed but wished I had gone for the Vitello Farcito which was rolled veal stuffed with Parma prosciutto, mozzarella cheese, spinach, pignoli nuts, wild mushroom gorgonzola cheese sauce--waitress lured me to Veal, so I took her word (BTW, we had 2 people waiting on us...no, we are not demanding, this place just knows how to do it right!). The servings are BIG and we left with some serious leftovers, so for the price, you get a lot....their servings are Italian and not French! We opted for dessert because so far we haven't been wowed by many of the desserts at our favorite eateries but they had a nice selection and we opted for the Bread pudding which I thought was pricey at 8 bucks until it made its guest appearance....hot bread pudding with minimal raisins (didn't taste them), swirls of cinnamon in the right amount with chocolate and caramel sauce accompanied by some whipped cream and vanilla ice cream and some fruity sauce on the edge which is really not needed since it conflicts with all the other positive flavors of this dynamic dessert. It was fantastic! Great way to end a very good meal. We will be back for I need to try that Vitello Farcito and get me some of that kick arse New York Calamari! As for the lady of the house, she peruses her palace and mingles with her regulars which is great to see and the Bus Girl is one of the most attentive I have seen....very astute and always filling up your water glass with icy cold water and keeping your space crumb free from their Amazing bread which works dynamically better with butter rather than Olive Oil....needles to say, it was a bueno sera for us! The food is always good here. I had the Sea Bass and it was excellent. The wine list is good and reasonable.

Went to Tre Scalini last night with Robbinslist for ladies night. We started off with martini's; everyone raved about the one they chose. I had the espresso martini and it was great. The white wine, recommended by the barkeep, was delicious. They offered a fixed price menu for $22, and I have to say, it would be hard to beat the value for money! Great selection in each of the 3 categories. Each portion was more than sufficient, and the dessert (tirmasu) was fresh and very generous! It was a fun evening, great service; food was excellent; drinks complimented the meal perfectly. Will be back for sure! read more

Food is very inconsistent. The first time we went it was out of this world, last night it wasn't so good. Food was bland, our salads didn't come until after our entree and it was bitter. We were very disappointed and probably will try another restaurant. Great decor inside, clean and extensive wine list. Just not willing to take the chance for the money that we get another off night. read more

No question about rating this restaurant, second to none, the best in every category; beginning with the moment you walk into the place, the server, the quality and presentation of food, the wine paring, including the entire 3 hours we dined will be remembered for a very long time. My husband made 7:30 reservations for the two of us for a belated Valentine's dinner on a Saturday night. We were hoping for a nice, quiet, romantic dinner. Unfortunately, we got anything but quiet. The evening began with a 30 minute wait after miscommunication between the two hosts. We were told it would be a few minutes, but our name was crossed off before we were seated, hence the 30 minute delay. When we were seated, the staff realized the tight space with tables on either side would be tough for my husband who is blind. They kindly moved us to a table on the end which we were very appreciative of. But, across from us was a party of 25. I thought, since they were done their meals when we sat down, they'd leave quickly and it would be quieter. That didn't happen. So, we couldn't hear one another, and due to only 2 wait staff, serving our entire section, including the party of 25, we didn't get much attention. Our waitress was very kind when she was able to come to us and I did feel bad for her having to handle such a large number. But, I had to ask twice for water, we never got bread (said it would be out when it came out of the oven, after I inquired), my husband's meal was very hot, mine was luke warm. The meals were very very good and I can't complain about that. Our waitress brought our bill before asking if we wanted dessert. This seemed, again, like miscommunication involving a host. Our dessert was lava cake, but it was overcooked and burnt. We were very polite the entire 2.5 hours we were there, but I feel something should have been done for all the little issues we had. I always leave at least 20% tip, but didn't tonight. I feel bad, as I know it was an issue of being really busy. The were 5 birthday/ anniversary parties that we heard songs for. But, we really felt like we didn't get what we paid for this evening. It's ashame, but I don't think we'll go back and I'd been wanting to eat here for a long time. read more
