My sister and i grew up in Hermosa Beach in the 50s and 60s. At that time, Hermosa Beach was a sleepy, funky little town, an idyllic place to grow up. Neither of us have visited in over 25 years and were looking forward to a trip this month. We've had to cancel our trip three times due to covid. Sadly, we just cancelled again. Blessedly, Treasure Chest came to the rescue! I checked out their website and ordered two Hermosa Beach-related items to give to my sister. The owner Darren was incredibly responsive to questions I had and made sure I received my items prior to my sister's birthday. She is going to love this beautiful mug! And I wound up ordering a second coaster to keep for myself; and it comes with that cute little black stand! I do not recommend this gift shop. The items are way overpriced. They charge $45 for a basic t-shirt, for example. The tank top that I bought...runs way too small. Outside it has some Hermosa Beach souvenir type clothing and some souvenir stuff inside too like the coffee mug that has big boobs that everyone must have and they have costumes available 365 day a year. The upstairs area is full of costumes. You want to be a hooker? A pimp daddy? Cop? Stripper? They have hundreds of costumes. Check it out! It's fun! Oh, hell no! Is there any way to give zero stars? This place has terrible customer service and a non-existent return policy. I hate writing bad reviews, but they tried to screw me, so here goes: I mistakenly purchased a pair of polarized Ray-Ban sunglasses at The Treasure Chest and attempted to exchange them less than 24 hours later for an un-polarized pair. They were undamaged and I had all the original packaging and receipt. The sales clerk was polite and willing to exchange the glasses and refund any difference,but her when tried to get authorization from Grace Kim, the owner, she refused, telling him I could only exchange them for a pair of equal or greater value. Well, all of Ray-Ban's unpolarized glasses are $30 to $50 less than their polarized lenses, so I was being charged $30 to $50 to exchange the glasses for a less expensive pair! I am a sailor, and polarized lenses do not work well with my navigational instrument screens, making them unreadable - so it's a safety issue. So up on E-bay they'll go..... "All sales are final" Kim's policy, but of course, that is not disclosed beforehand. I should have expected this sort of attitude from the shop I suppose, It is full of cheap, tacky tourist type goods. Shops that prey on tourists are always a little shady. Still, as a local businessman myself, I try to support other local small businesses. Rest assured, I will stay as far away as possible from this cheezy, fly-by-night overstuffed tourist trap, and will buy my shades from Amazon or a local store with a reasonable return policy in the future. The one advantage brick and mortar businesses have over online sellers and big chains is personalized customer service - being cheap and greedy is going to cost them in the long run.... read more

My friends and I came inside to look for a hoodie since one of us forgot our jacket. Instead we were accused of stealing by either one of the employees or the owner, not sure which. When we told them we were completely innocent, I even offered to go through our bags in front of them, she got very defensive and looked embarrassed for suggesting we were (and I quote),"acting sus." Anyway we left without purchasing the hoodie and even if our motive was to steal, theres nothing worth it here. Now we have a pretty hilarious story though so thank you. read more

This shop has little Beach finds like sunnies and beer funnels and a million funny hats and regular caps. I stopped in because I was burning my head off and got a cute cap that was great quality. Treasure Chest is pretty much the staple of the Hermosa Beach party crowd. There is so much ridiculousness going on there I don't even know where to begin. There's tonnnnnnns of Halloween costumes upstairs and during the October season, they pretty much dominate the downstairs portion of the store. There's bikinis, flip flops, sunglasses (cheap), wigs, towels, hats, beads, tee-shirts, shorts, shot glasses and a plethora of various souvenir collector items of the beachy variety. The music is always jammin' and the staff has always been really laid back. I always feel relaxed when I'm shopping there. If you're ever in need of some last minute party favors, red bikini bottoms for 4th of July (I wanted to mix & match) or just want to do some fun window shopping for the hell of it, Treasure Chest definitely fits the bill. read more

Think about the store Spencer's. It's kind of like this but not as "adult". There are plenty of little knick knacks that you can buy, play, with and have some fun. They sell a lot of Hermosa Beach items. Shot glasses, ash trays, sweaters, shirts, hats, shorts and tank tops all sporting the Hermosa Beach on them. They have some beach toys you can get as well, Frisbee, plastic shovels, bats. All sorts of stuff that allow you to have fun in the sun. A small range of fun sun glasses too. The top level has a large assortment of Halloween costumes. The prices here are pretty steep though and I think it is only because it's on the pier next to the beach. Other than that, I usually stop by here just to take a look around and see if there is anything new. read more

Treasure Chest has stood the test of time at the Hermosa pier. This place is a lot like a museum that you can spend nearly all day in, without seeing everything. The large quantity of costumes, paraphernalia, junk, etc. etc. is amazing. I have gone in here a lot over the years, but more as a source of entertainment. It is worth the visit. read more

A lot of fun stuff are sold here! I love their hats. I got one that said, "Wanna scratch my 12 inch?" without realizing what type of pic was on it. My friends told me to get it. It had a dj on it, so it was referring to scratching some vinyl lol. There was a sale going on where it was BOGO 1/2 off. I got one that said Party, although my friend wanted me to get one that said Wasted on it. My friend plans to paint Monster on the bottom on it, since one of my friends nicknamed me Party Monster ha ha ha. If you like cool/weird things, you should check out this tore. Treasure Chest in Pier Plaza has lots of cool things. They have a great selection of Halloween costumes upstairs. Good Souvenirs too, great for tourist or just a place to get something. Hermosa Beach souvenirs and t-shirts, gag gifts, beach wear and gear - mostly for adults. Not too much selection for kids (all in the backroom). Point taken on the recent t-shirts I saw there: "I Like Shaved Beaver" and "Finish Your Beer, People in Africa Are Starving". Costumes are upstairs until after Labor Day, then pretty much the entire store is taken over with costumes, accessories, and Halloween festive stuff. Definitely a good store to browse and get a good laugh. read more

I love this place! They have such cool stuff, I use it pacifically when I have a costume party or when I need new NFL gear. They have everything from two for $10 sunglasses, expensive sunglasses, cool costumes for any type of occasion, and they even have a sneaky back room with all the sale stuff. It has some level of touristy stuff like some of the other shops on the pier but more locals shop here than tourists. They have literally every type of costume that you can think of when you want to dress up for holidays or bar crawls, and the owner will typically throw in some cute rub on tattoos or something if it's obvious you're shopping for a special occasion. Definitely go here for Taurus knickknacks, definitely go here if you're playing dress up for any reason, and definitely grab your sports gear here. CAVEAT EMPTOR As a fellow local business employee on the Hermosa Beach pier, I have always gladly refered this store to customers and out of towners in the market for Treasure Chest's merchandise. All up UNTIL I too mistakenly became a patron of their store when I purchased an adult costume early one October evening. I purchased a adult bunny costume that I shortly found on the vendor's OWN website for 60% LESS than the price (plus free same day shipping). www.forplaycatalog.com/ The next day after my discovery I cordially went back to the store to see if there was anything they could do such as a refund or price match. I even brought the website print out that displayed the exact same costume thinking out of courtesy and consideration as a local pier employee, they could work something out. If you ever want to purchase the costumes they have for sale there I strongly recommend checking online first. Not only did they refuse to refund my card or match the cost, they went on to try and convice me that the website's service was faulty claiming that "even if I ordered from that website, I will recieve the wrong costume/wrong size". In conclusion, I know my experience isnt something to write to the Better Business Bureau about, but there is a reason why all sales are final there. At first the money was the main issue that I felt I was wronged but it became the principle and manner that they handeled my situation that I share my personal experience with the "Treasure Chest". read more

overpriced tourist ish? check. I guess you can't really blame a business for cashing in on a market like that with a location THAT close to the beach. They've got everything from shot glasses to booty shorts, hilarious t-shirts to $30 towels. Like an @ss, I forgot to grab the towels from the truck and didn't want to walk the 1/2 mile back to get em. (We were there for the AVP not the beach... though the beach & weather were fantastic - hence the towel need). So we paid for the cheapest towel available: Iron Maiden for $19 and were on our merry way. If you want a touristy something-or-another, definitely check it out. She was so accommodating and helpful towards us and she should be running the place, if you need help go to her! However, the store owner was incompetent and inconsistent in what she was saying. I bought $79 worth of accessories and was never told I couldn't return them, however, the next day when I tried to return them I was told there's no returns but that I could exchange the items. When I went to exchange them the owner took back her word and said no exchanges. Wendy was so understanding and helped us out when she wasn't the one responsible for the confusion. They got those cheap, 80's style neon colored sunglasses along with an array of other party type gear. So if you're looking for stuff like that, this is your spot. The upstairs area is for traditional Halloween costumes. I went there this past October looking for something unique, considering the location and the name, but their costume selection is just like any of those regular Halloween warehouse type stores. A bunch of prepackaged costumes you can shop for online. Nothing unique or interesting really. So for what my needs were, this place really didn't fit the bill. Treasure Chest is the perfect place to go if you're at the pier for a holiday & somehow forgot to dress festively - Treasure Chest WILL have stuff to outfit you so you aren't the lame person not wearing green or red, white, and blue. They also have clothes (for men, women, girls, boys) with Hermosa Beach written on them if you want to send something back to your family...some of the girls tanks & board shorts are actually really cute. GREAT SERVICE !!! We were walking down the strip and my sweet boyfriend saw me make a beeline towards the long skirts they had on a rack in the front of the store and insisted he get me one :) We are both beach-people so we fit right in in this "beach shop". I found a really cool palm tree vase and a couple cool fridge magnets in here as well. The fellow behind the counter was our age and seemed to actually CARE how he wrapped the stuff up. The magnets were made of shells and fragile he wrapped each individually and took great care with the palm tree vase as well. They have an array of gag gifts, hoodies and t-shirts but a HUGE selection of costumes as well :) LOTS to look at in this store !!! I was impressed they had a cute little fitting room on the side of the store as well and I was encouraged by the gent to try the skirt on before I purchased it which was a nice touch rather than just "buy-and-go". He seemed to take pride in what he sold and seemed like he genuinely cared :) We will be back !!! I was very impressed with the service we got here !!! read more
