So if you've forgotten/need something for your morning *or* afternoon session, they've got you covered. Huge selection of all of a surfer's accoutrement. Rolling through El Porto Surf Shop was the kind of experience every surfer hopes for, and that's 100% thanks to Rudy and the rest of the crew. I'm visiting from Brazil and wanted to check out the Manhattan Beach surf scene, so I stopped by the shop to grab a few essentials before paddling out. As soon as I walked in, Rudy greeted me with a big smile and super chill energy. I told him I needed a new leg rope and some gear to fix a ding on the tip of my board, and he knew exactly what I needed. Rudy knows his stuff! He hooked me up with exactly what I needed and even gave me pointers on the repair so I could get back in the water without stressing. Big shoutout to Rudy and the whole El Porto surf shop crew. Cool little surf shop above a liquor store. When I first started surfing (this was probably around 2010 or 2011) I came here to drop off a board for repairs and I was a bit turned off by the guy because he was gruff and not too friendly, but when I came back again to pick up my board he was still a bit disgruntled but he gave me some good surf advice so I can't be mad. I recently came here October 2019 because I forgot my wetsuit so I needed to rent one and it was this young guy working who was very friendly and helpful. I wonder if it's a new owner, but the new guy was a lot nicer than the old guy from back in the day. The wetsuits for rent are rip curls and the suit was in great shape. There was also a pretty good selection of boards for sale albeit not a huge one but good variety. If I recall correctly they have a board demo program where you can rent a board for a day to demo and use that rental price toward buying the board. I may come back just to demo some boards. Keep in mind this place is small so there's not a huge selection, but if you're surfing anywhere near Porto this is the best location possible and the customer service is great. Parking is directly off highland and limited, though thankfully there's traffic lights on the adjacent intersections so there's gaps in traffic to pull in and out. read more

El Porto Surf Shop is lovely! We were able to rent four wetsuits and four surfboards with ease. The woman working on Thanksgiving morning was very friendly and helpful. The wetsuits worked great as well as the surfboards. And returning them was very convenient and stress free. The rates were also very reasonable. I would definitely recommend El Porto Surf shop! I'm in a good mood and I had a good day. I was looking for a wetsuit for rent for my friend on November 15, 2021. Those 2 kids working that day offered an oversized wetsuit, when I told them that it looks large it could fit me - one of them looked a little offended by my comment. He replied that this wetsuit will perfectly fit your friend, it will be a little longer but if you want I can find something else. He started looking, so I doubt myself, maybe he is right. I said: you know better, so I'll give it a try. We took the wetsuit, when my friend started to put it on the suit was wet inside and obviously oversized, other than that there were multiple holes in it. It was too late to come back, so we decided to try it anyway. The water was cold 62F, so my friend got wet and cold as soon as first wave hits. We spend in the ocean about 20 min and had to go back. When I returned the wetsuit, I politely explained that this wetsuit is a trash, it has multiple holes in it, and it doesn't fit even close. Looks like he didn't care at all, turned away saying "sorry about that", I said "so this is it?", he said "yes, I'm going to charge you now". I said, "ok, go ahead" and walked away. They charged me $17.71 (whole day) for some reason, I rent it hourly. I like supporting local businesses, but how can I do that if employees do not care. read more

I swear. This place sucks Beginning with the price for surf board rentals. $15/hr plus $5/hr for wetsuit so that's $20/hr We figured in order not to rush back before 3 hrs, we might as well get the day rental for each which came out to over $60. What really got me was that the guy wanted to initially charge by the hour, which, if he wanted to help us save some money, he would know to just charge the day's worth. I'm a bargain hunter, not being cheap (there's a difference) - and I didn't appreciate this. That's 1 thing. Also, the wetsuits he gave us were as if they had just been used, a bunch of sand on them. I immediately saw a hole in mine and changed it but they didn't have anymore Mediums so I had to go one size bigger which sucked. My friend had 3 wetsuits with holes!!! before he got a decent one. I usually go to Clint Carroll in Huntington Beach (no affiliation- I just like their service). It's like $15 for half a day rental and $25 for a full day, both of which include a wetsuit. They even have a Groupon for even cheaper. The whole staff is super chill and the rentals are good quality. Although they do prefer you reserve boards ahead of time because they are a surf school. So just give them a call before u drive. Plus I feel the water is cleaner in Huntington, I honestly don't mind making the drive out there specially if I know I can get better service overall there. Legendary place, best surf shop in LA! El Porto Surf Shop has such a huge variety of boards, but what makes it special is the amazing vibe and people. Pack and Rackquel are the chillest people and they really make your day when you visit the shop. I also love that they rent wetsuits, which not a lot of places do. Woah man this is a hidden secret along the California golden coast! They are literally above a liquor store on the second floor! You can't beat that! But you find out that you can! Cause the staff is amazing, take it from a total noob! I bought a board on Craigslist, and it ended up being a Channel Islands bob machado edition, and trust me I don't know what that means! Anyways, the staff checked out my board, told me how I can get it fixed. Hooked me up with some rip curl board shorts and and rash guard(thank goodness btw), they even waxed my board for me, cause I told them it was my first time taking out my first board! And that's what I did, fully equipped on the beach's of manhatten! Or manhatten beach! How ever you call it! Great little shop, head up the stairs to the right of the liquor store. Lots of hardtop and soft top boards for rent along with wetsuits and other apparel. New owner's super friendly and is a local to the El Porto beach surf community - you're as likely to see him in the water in the morning as the shop in the afternoon. He said they're not selling used boards just yet but will soon and they have a nice selection of boards from their own shaper including funboards and higher end foam boards which are both great for El Porto in the summer! There's also cheap public parking right next door if you're not planning to park at the beach (or if that lot's full). Check this place out! read more

Tiny spot right by the beach. They have the essentials if you need last-minute leash/wax/fins etc. Surprisingly good selection of ding repair supplies. But mostly I think they do rentals. Seems like you could probably get better gear or better prices some other places but that's because the selling point here is more focused around convenience. I usually rent from the surf van on the parking lot on El Porto, but due to the van not being there (inconsistent hours despite its yelp page saying that it is open) and I'm glad we got to give this place a try! So from the el porto parking lot, the walk is about 5-7mins, but you have to go uphill, which is definitely a challenge. Imagine carrying a surfboard, wearing a wetsuit up and down that hill. But as the next resort, it is great. If you have a car with a car rack and some ties, I recommend picking up the surfboard first from the shop and then driving down to the parking lot. That uphill climb is definitely not easy! Prices were great! So the wetsuit was about $6/hour while beginner surfboards (wavestorms) were about $13/hour. This is a cheap rate, compared to the on parking lot van which charged about $30 for the wetsuit and surfboard. (But it is close so there is definitely a convenience). Overall, if you're looking for a rental shop nearby (and especially have a car to carry the boards), El Porto Surfboards is a great option! Even with no car, it is doable! read more

This shop is killa my bru. I have never gone into this shop to rent a board. I go in here for wax from time to time and talk about surfing. The location is prime. It is almost beach front property. Located directly across the street from Skarkeez in Manhattan and located on top of a liquor store. The shop has not changed in years which is a very good thing. Walk up the stairs wetsuits always hanging out to dry. Lots of cool stickers and various different wax to choose from (like it hard for a surfer to choose wax). Parking is never a problem. Wax is a buck. Stickers are a buck. Surfing knowledge from old timers can not have a price associated with it. I hope this place stays around as long as the owner wants it to. It is located right down the street from my Bikram Yoga studio which is always nice when you want to do two things at once. Please if you are headed to the area give your local surf shop business. Rent a board, buy some wax or a sticker do not leave empty handed. read more

I picked up 2 boogie boards at 4 in the afternoon and I said that I would bring them back the next day. He told me to bring them back by 5. I agreed. I rented a wetsuit and surfboard for my 11 year old daughter who had never been surfing before. The owner and staff we very helpful with getting her in the right size suit and board - even giving her some pointers about how to stand up. She wasn't totally successful in the water but it was a great way to spend part of the day. Rental was very easy and hassle free. read more

The customer service was awesome but the wet suits and boards are trash. They shouldn't charge the same if the boards are nearly almost un-rideable. The guy told me is because most of the boards they have are from Costco and Costco has been out of boards since Covid hit. read more

Kind of embodying the spirit of the local culture. Anyway, I like them a ton, my board is from here and I feel I got a good price for it. I'm kind of a grom though. Come check this place out and get a sticker or something. They have good ding repair kits and cool store merch. They're under new ownership from a dude named Pac. Nice people, good prices. Tiny, but they have what have you need and are local and convenient. Rented a kid and an adult wetsuit, rolled the two blocks down the hill to the El Porto Beach parking lot and had a super fun day boogie boarding. Was able to stay in way longer with a full suit on. Note to visitors: Due the prevailing Pacific current coming from North to South, the surf in California is a lot colder than on the East or Gulf Coast. If you're going to be in the water a long time you will appreciate having a wetsuit. El Porto Surfboards is a great place to rent one. read more

I went well out of my way to drive down here to buy my first wetsuit because I wanted to support a small business. I'm a total novice surfer, and the guy completely took advantage of my naïveté. He only had a few L 4/3s. As a novice I don't know what 4/3 means and I'm not sure how it's supposed to fit. I thought the large fit OK but now when I go out in the waves I learn that the fit is way too big, and I'm burning up in the 4/3. The suit was $250. I get that businesses are struggling but this dude should have just told me he didn't have the suit I needed in stock. I hate writing a negative review on a small business but I feel ripped off. Players Surfboards now known as El Porto Surf Shop is the historical local shop brah. As with anything else, there is the good and bad. Good: -Mike gets excellent boards in there for sale. I don't know how he does it but he seems to get bizarre ...Lost boards that I have never seen anywhere else and they are dirt cheap. I think they are factory 2nds. I got a brand new 6'8" Blunt for $400 including fins. Retail is like $799+fins. He also gets some amazing consignment boards from the well heeled MB locals. You can get a top shelf ...Lost or Al Merrick for under $200 which is a world leading price. GREAT selection -Decent price ding repair, quality work. -Free stickers + wax when I have bought a board or wetsuit from him. Customer appreciation goes a long way with me. Bad: -Mike (the white haole) seems to have a bit of an attitude problem sometimes. Perhaps it's localism or whatever but occasionally I've caught a bit of attitude and I've seen him do it with other patrons. The Hawaiian guy who seems to work weekends is a complete asshole like most Hawaiians in the surf scene. That just pisses me off that some ignorant islander living on the mainland brings the snobby hater vibe with him from the North Shore. Were it not for the localist attitudes the shop would get five stars but the bottom line is this place has the best selection of quality boards at the lowest prices in LA read more
