I started becoming disenchanted with thrift stores on the peninsula. They were all way overpriced and the stuff was mostly trash. I felt this way until I discovered Pick of the Litter. It is a lot smaller than Goodwill or the Salvation Army, but it is stocked with great treasures and everything is cheap! I've found Ferragamo shoes for $5, amazing records for pennies and great jewelry. This place really is a gem, I almost wish I could keep it to myself, but considering that the profits go to the SPCA, everyone should know about it. I also love that sometimes there are cats waiting to be adopted that you can pet while looking around. They also have 50% off sales, mostly on holidays for you that are looking for extra deals. read more

Leave valuables at home.I had a 50$ brand new designer backpack stolen by the staff.First of all,when you come in,they will tell you to leave any bags you are carrying anywhere inside the room behind the counter.But they don't give you a ticket for your item,or anything like that.I figured the customers wouldn't try to steal my backpack,but I hadn't counted on the staff doing so!.After complaining that my backpack had dissappeared,I was told by a staff member that she had thought it was for sale,and had put it up on a rack somewhere,and now mysteriously could no longer locate the item upon said rack.A likely story!.This place stinks. read more

We ventured into this little shop while in the area to see if they had any small stuffed animals for our pups. The shop has a pretty good selection of housewares and a really nice book section in the back. I didn't see any stuffed animals and asked a worker for help. She helped show me around the shop and then even brought me back to where they were sorting items. Two ladies back there let me go through the bins of things they hadn't priced yet. Everything was so nicely organized. I found about 8-10 to take home and they gave me a great deal! I was so impressed by the store, their process, and the super friendly nature of the employees. Plus, they have an area in the middle where a cat or two can be placed for adoption. So sweet! read more

this is by far my favorite thrift store in the area and i love that all the proceeds go to animals. they are reasonably priced and i love that all the items are in good condition. Unlike other thrift stores, they do not try to sell junk. I looked at the other reviews and along with many i thought the staff was so friendly and nice. I give them props for sorting and managing the entire store, in my opinion, it takes a lot of time and energy to do that. Im pretty sure that they are all volunteers who work there so even more power to them. love this place and highly reccomend it. plus check out every 3rd tuesday of the month im pretty sure everything in the store is half off (yippeee) read more

This shop was packed with different items of all different qualities. The staff was friendly and I love to support a great cause, especially an animal related one. They have their own parking lot which made things easy. I didn't purchase anything but I would go back again in the future. read more

This place represents a very worthy cause in that proceeds go to the Peninsula Humane Society. Pluses: they usually have one or two dogs or cats from the shelter on site that is available for adoption. Smart way to increase exposure to the animals and get them adopted. They also have what appears to be a well-sorted inventory of things people might actually want, not a whole lot of useless junk. Minuses: it's very crampled and not in a very big place. Also, it is staffed by well-meaning but S-L-O-W elderly folk, which means that there was a long, slow moving line at check-out. We were going to buy something small, but bagged it because we didn't want to wait in line. Don't shop here unless you're not in any kind of hurry and are willing to wait. read more

Fantastic place. Have donated to and bought from alike. Tons of vintage finds and diamonds in the rough. Occasionally get to meet one of the adoptable cats that you're putting your cash towards helping. Great idea, and the lovely woman who works at the front always made me feel welcome. A lovely and surprisingly organized thrift store. Had a lot of good looking furniture. I went looking for sheets or some kind of material to make dog bed covers. I came out with two plant pots and a curtain. It was a tad high on the price range but I don't mind because the give to the spca! Ran by little old ladies. read more

I recently found out about this place from a volunteer at the Peninsula Humane Society. I LOVE the idea of helping out the animals at the shelter, so I went to check this place out. They have a meter parking lot, which is nice since finding parking on or right off of Broadway can sometimes be a huge hassle. It's pretty small, so it's easy to keep tidy and organized and you can make donations easily in the front. Every third Tuesday of the month is mobile adoption day where they bring in a couple shelter animals. To get more traffic this day in hopes of finding a home for one of the adorable dogs or cats, the whole store is 50% off. Shopping and donating at this place is a win win! I always find a couple good books or CDs here for pennies on the dollar, and know my purchase is helping out my furry little friends over at the Humane Society!! read more

I really enjoy coming here. Any chance i get on my free days i hop on over to this little treasure. I always head first to the books section to find some neat books to pick up. They have by far the largest selection of books in a thrift store compared to other thrift shop's... while probing for a neat novel to pick up i occasionally pet the cats that just chill on top of the cage waiting for a foster home. :( i wish i can just take them all home. They have the neatest treasures sometimes. I often look at their craft and arts drawers and find some neat things as well. I also got a neat steal for a Halloween costume during Halloween season. It was perfect for my best friend's costume. So i just had to get it. and got it i did. i also got some neat jewelry finds here. I was able to find a nice steal in the jewelry counter . i got a $5 ring that is adorable and to my surprise it is 100% silver. So i wear it on the daily since i am sensitive to fake metals. anyways. COME HERE IF U LIKE DIGGING FOR TREASURES LIKE ME :) :) . oh yes and cant forget ! ALL PROCEEDS GO TO SPCA! so yay! :) the old ladies working here are so nice :) especially the one with the nice nails! she always tells me about how she got them just done! lols read more

This is a fun place to stop and browse if you're walking by. My kids like to visit the cats that live here while I check out the books. Also check out the magazine selection. We've found brand new kids books here also. The clothes are just old lady clothes. Nothing really special or funky to be found. But I did find a really cool turquoise picture frame, very heavy. The good news is that you always find at least one cool thing when you walk in. And it probably costs a couple bucks. read more

At the recommendation of the other Yelpers, I checked this place out....and wow! What a great find!! Yes, you have to wade through a lot to find a gem, but I got what looked like a brand new/never worn Gap peacoat for just $5!! Simply amazing. And to echo the other reviews: the staff who runs this place is great, too. I will definitely be making this place a regular destination -- if not for the merchandise, then to visit the cute kitties they have for adoption at the front of the store. read more

Wide selection of stuff. Tons of books, clothes and glass vases. It's a bit cramped but it makes it feel more like a treasure hunt.

Love this store! It's much cleaner and better lit than most thrift stores. Prices are excellent. If you still have a VCR, you can find some great movies for $1 (or 50 cents on 1/2 price days). After you've watched it, donate it back and get a tax deductible receipt. Great selection of pet stuff. Also good books, furniture... I've even seen wedding dresses! Some of my scores: Two very fancy dog beds, $7.50 & $10, which would cost $60 and $120 new. Dinnerware for 4, $9. A couple of like-new purses, $4 each. A gorgeous Lane cedar chest, $50. The one negative is that check-out is very slow, but it's staffed with (mostly elderly) volunteers, so you have to be patient. I donate all my stuff here because all the proceeds go to help the animals. read more

This place is just wonderful! I love the fact that all the proceeds go to the Peninsula Humane Society (we got our sweet cat there couple years ago). I frequently donate clothing, housewares, and most recently furniture. You'll never know what you'll find. On my recent visit there I found a beautiful candle holder that was just perfect , a pretty basket, and a great stash of gift bags! The staff is great, and also you'll find a cat or two in the back up for adoption. I suggest you check this place out .. it's great! read more

I am a former resident of Burlingame and the thrift shop was getting started about the time I moved out of state. I was back in the Bay Area a few weeks ago and had to stop in. I think there's something there for everyone. The staff was very helpful, and a lot of items were being purchased. It's a bargain haven! I bought a beautiful crystal dish for LESS THAN THREE DOLLARS. This is one of the better thrift stores in the bay area. If you look through the racks there are many many items of clothing of high-quality brand names. The store is divided into departments: clothes, kitchenware, books, accessories. The pet section is fabulous, consisting of pet carriers, dog dishes, dog/cat beds, etc, for prices much lower than a big pet store. Yes, you have to carry your own donations into the store, but they do have carts available to wheel your things in. Please remember all of these people are volunteers, with a large number of them being older ladies, asking them to help you carry stuff in is a bit unreasonable. Please remember this is funding for the Peninsula Humane Society, one of the most progressive animals shelters in the whole country. read more

I always feel good after I leave this place. Either one, I've donated my unwanted stuff to a good cause and can see them put out my things right before my eyes, and if I'm lucky I'll also see someone else grab it and excitedly want to buy it. Or two, I find a great bargain here for myself to take home. Either way it's a win-win. My whole life I've donated to Goodwill, never receiving any kind of thank you and always wondered, where the heck does this money go to anyways? And shopping those stores always made me feel gouged and ripped off that I never bought anything. However, this is not the case at Pick of the Litter. You guys are awesome! I've never bought anything from a thrift store until I came here to drop off my donations and your store turned me around and made me feel good about thrift store shopping. Your prices are reasonable, I love your sale days (although it's crowded but 50% off is awesome), your store is fun and interesting to browse through, your staff are nice, and I love supporting you. I've brought friends in with me too and they also enjoy your store and always find something. It's a win win for me and the animals. I highly recommend both shopping and donating here. It was not easy for me to find this store, mainly because I didn't know the area and the street sign for Chulu Vista was covered by some trees, so I missed it, but eventually, I found the place, and I immediately liked the place upon entering. It's not the neatest of places, but it is a decent sized store, lots of clothing, although most were sizes too big for me, and shelves full of books. Today when I went, everything in the store was 50% off, so of course I had to take advantage of that deal, and I did not walk out empty-handed like I usually do. I found a pair of gray pumps for my sister, size 4 and with the discount, it was only 2 bucks. Ah, I normally don't envy my sister for her feet since they are difficult to work with when shoe shopping, but today, I did. =) I also purchased a couple of scarves, and two vintage-looking purses, whatever that really means. Alls I know, I am happy with my purchase and the deals I received. I think I would have made the purchases regardless of the discount, so prices were decent to begin with. Besides, all of the proceeds go to the Humane Society anyway, and I saw a black kitty for adoption...so cute! *Update* Scored 28 lovely scarves, and two pairs of shoes!! This is truly my FAVORITE thrift store... FYI - Every 3rd Tuesday of the month, they have a 50% off EVERYTHING sale, so that's when I like to go!! =D read more

I am disappointed in the management of this store. For the second time today I was met with a situation where a price tag had disappeared (been removed?) from a piece of furniture and then that price (which I had noted only yesterday) was raised by the management. Yes, I am aware that the monies raised all go for the animals, but that is no excuse for what appears to amount to deceptive, or at least sloppy, pricing practices. read more

I love this place! Sure, sometimes it's hit or miss, but there are definitely pieces with character here. My friend found a painting of elephants worth around $200 for like $10, and also a bunch of Allen Edmonds shoes which are supposed to be really good (?). Meanwhile, I found a pair of J. Brand jeans for $4. Yep, that's right: the perfect dark-hued, straight leg, already-hemmed-for-shortish-people J. Brands for less than a Lincoln. Needless to say, I was an instant convert to this place. I'd definitely recommend going on their 50% off sale days, the first Fridays and third Tuesdays of the month, which is when I score my best deals. I saw a pair of mustard Madewell cords on the $3 rack (which would be additionally marked down to $1.50), but they weren't my size, while my other friend bought a current season pair of 7 for All Mankind skinnies for $10. I've also found great condition Juicy Couture and Margaret O'Leary sweaters as well as oxfords, highwaisted jeans, and overalls here for less than $5. As with any thrift store, the selection changes quickly, so sometimes you get lucky and other times you leave empty-handed. It's all part of the fun. Bonus is that the proceeds go to the animals (who sometimes make an appearance, especially on Shop Adopt Tuesdays), and that the elderly volunteers are usually pretty nice! :) read more

Today was my first visit to this wonderful thrift store. I found so many great items at excellent prices. I did not get the man's name that was the cashier but he was very friendly & pleasant. I can not wait to go back for more treasures. I also like that the proceeds go to help the SPCA. This thrift store is worth a trip because the prices are so reasonable unlike the thrift shop on B Street in San Mateo. That store, you could buy similar things at Ross or Marshalls for less. read more
