Sometimes my single pleasure of the day is stopping in here after work. The whole staff is wonderful and friendly and it's just enjoyable to browse around. I've found items I need and have a solid use for .... and ..... items that are just neat to have, artful, or I'd never purchase at retail, but, because the price is so attractive, you can not pass it up. Looking around as I sit here, I have 5 or 6 lamps I love that were less than $10 each, beautiful paintings and other art. I have a good deal of clothing that would be way out of my league if I was to purchase it new. I almost hate to write this because others will look for them, but I've picked up 6 Tommy Bahama's silk shirts in the last year for little money that would easily cost $100.00+ each to purchase otherwise. These don't have the "Island" prints on them, but are useful (for here) dress shirts in both long and short sleeve. This just one example of the type of item you would never buy retail, yet you get "retail" compliments about (really, isn't that what it's all about). I stop in often because they put items out all day and you never know what will pop up. I have some beautiful furniture, plates and silverware etc. I have a little white doggie that tags along with me while shopping, so they are pet friendly. I post a picture of some nice chests I purchased at "Pick." Very useful to store more items. Seriously, my 27 year old daughter just visited and left with ... whatever she wanted - and it was quite a bit, all via Pick of the Litter as she sets up her new condo. Enjoy! read more

I used to drop off donations here all the time when I lived in the Peninsula. I was not able to go there when I lived in the East Bay but now that I 'm in the city, there's no excuse. Moving forward I will donate to Pick of the Litter because the proceeds benefit the animals. I've shopped here for the requisite ugly Christmas sweater but they have a ton of merchandise for everything else - furniture, houseware, children's clothes, shoes, men and women's clothes, etc I even purchased wrapping paper here for $2! Parking is relatively easy - only a quarter for half hour and they will provide a cart for you to transport your donations from your car to the store. The people working inside the store are friendly not like some other stores *cough Salvation Army Goodwill cough* Spring cleaning is around the corner, and if you need a place to donate, please choose Pick of the Litter. read more

Items are still marked at nearly 60% or more of the full retail price, and seemingly surcharged for "vintage" items. Their selection is decent, but if you're looking for a bargain this is not the place. The pricing system is so incredibly off, and this includes the sentiment that their proceeds are donated. A warning: don't you DARE ask about buying anything from their display window, they get the question every time Ive been in the shop and they will immediately dismiss you. Correct me if I'm wrong but... Why? Pick of the Litter has really good pet supplies and books for sale. I picked up a pet carrier, brush, harness and scratcher, all in good shape at inexpensive prices. They also have a decent book collection for just a couple bucks a book. However, they stock very little children's clothes and what they had wasn't very desirable. I can see why Thrifty folks like this place and I can also see why the vision my minds eye painted on my behalf, is not as I thought it would be. If you have ever visited New York, New Jersey, Philly and many other East Coast cities, you are aware of the blunt and direct nature they utilize as a means to communicate the truth. Now, if you live in San Mateo, Palo Alto and/or Burlingame, or countless other suburban cities in the Bay Area, you are less than familiar with direct blunt versions of the truth. You are more than likely familiar with the Passive Aggressive nature by which we avoid communication. Allow me to paint an example of each. Suburbs: Nifty little store with seemingly like new items that someone chose to part with. Wide selection of gently used items that could easily be purchased to enhance my new look. By new look,. I mean the look I am crafting as we speak to relate more to the trendy types at my tech job. Endless variety of funky, cool wardrobe options and clearly to be had for a steal. I mean, I was in a thrift store in Berkeley last weekend and they wanted $45 for a flannel skirt. Oh. M. Gee!!! I love everything about this store! I love the ladies who work here, I love that they have cats roaming around the store looking for loves, I love that the proceeds are benefiting more aminals who need loves ....and I LOVE the Burlingame castoffs!!! I have collected enough vintage dresses and hats to dress an entire tea party. I have found work attire, jackets and even a HAWT leather vest for my best gay. Like all thrift stores, I recommend you get there early for the best selections, but we've spent plenty of weekends going post lunch and always leave with treasures. Cherry picked. Prices are rather high and they sell their stuff on ebay. Not a true "thrift store" but rather a resale at the highest retail they can get for items. If you're looking for a bargain they got it first then marked it up. The store is messy and run down. You'd think they would hire a cleaning crew for the prices they charge. If you're going to charge $50 per sweater at least have a clean atmosphere. I'm not returning as there is no actual "treasure" they picked it all and inflated the price. I've lived in Burlingame for my entire life and have never actually went into this thrift store. I walked by with my boyfriend and we decided to go in and we found so many cute clothing pieces and were shocked to find out how cheap they were at checkout because of the discounts. I don't know if the sale is just for now but I had to stay even longer and shop some more! I plan on visiting weekly while on my morning walk! I love how all the proceeds go to the humane society. First off, we went there for my sister and mom who absolutely LOVE thrift stores. I am usually not a fan. But man oh man, this store was a store of TREASURES. Amazing items, high-quality items and for affordable prices too. I bought so much stuff I had to buy a new piece of luggage to bring it all back home to the great state! I came here on holiday even though California is not where I wanted to be(I enjoy my freedom as an American). I absolutely love this place, there are so many great finds. They carry a lot of Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, and a few designer pieces such as Burberry and True Religion. The store is clean and doesn't smell like other thrift stores. The clothes are sorted by color, which makes easier to shop! People prefer to donate their items here, rather than Goodwill, since all proceeds benefit the Peninsula Humane Society:) BTW there is a metered parking lot, so I suggest you bring some change. read more

This thrift store rocks! Not only does it benefit a great cause...but there seems to be ample parking (quarter for half an hour) & lots of interesting goodies. I dropped off a donation today & wound up buying a TON of baby/kids clothes for less than $2 a piece. i also saw a wide variety of furniture & clothes. The books...omg, the BOOKS! Tons and tons of great reads that are, get this, fairly well organized! Go on Tuesdays where everything is half off (except for jewelry). I bought two anthologies for $1 (total!). Ok so the cashier may have forgotten to given me the discount on a couple of items, but it's a great cause so I didn't mind terribly. read more

I give it a five star because we care dearly about animal rescue and the SPCA/Humane Society. I saw a few negative reviews about some of the volunteers/employees. Well I admit we have experienced some negative and slightly rude staff but I refuse to be so petty and give a low review to a nonprofit when they are here for a great cause. We have had some people thank us and some kind of indifferent people too but most important to us is not the thanks we get but their cause. My advice to anyone wanting to donate is to call there phone number and listen to the voice message/Announcement and follow the directions. They list everything not accepted for donation. As well as their hours of operation and their donation hours. If someone is a volunteer then give them a break for any attitude or rudeness because they are not getting paid or they are not getting paid much. BTW: We have been donating to Pick of the Litter for over 10 years and we are proud parents to a PSPA dog. read more

I am so glad there is a place where 100 percent of the sales go to the Peninsula humane society. I feel better donating to them rather than donating to Goodwill. The fact that the proceeds of a thrift shop goes towards helping animals, gets 5 stars in my book. Yes. Maybe VOLUNTEERS didn't give the best customer service for some customers, is a downer.. but really people? You try lifting heavy bags and boxes, lifting furniture, directing customers and pricing items in a very packed store, organizing, cleaning, selling, helping customers while stocking. Doing all of this while items are continuously coming into the store while it's really hot outside And doing all of this with a smile on your face. They obviously volunteer because they love animals as much as we do... Don't forget that. I for one am grateful for their service. For the last 15 years of me coming here, I've always got a Thank You from somebody working there, when really.. it should be me thanking them. And I do. read more

I found Pick of the Litter after shopping at the Burlingame Farmer's Market. Great shop with a huge selection of items.. wonderful CD collection and endless clothing racks. I love how the shop advertises its support of the Humane Society, seeing local businesses contributing to the community in that way is a major plus for me. read more

Wow it's been eight years since I've first donated here. A lot of people no longer work here all the old people and the friendly gay dude are all gone. The pkace is less cluttered and has more moving space due to less clutter ...clap clap... However .....This place has and identity issue. They don't seem to realize that they are a thrift store. (Go to goodwill a block away -they know they r a thrift almost all their stuff reflects that). The prices @ pick -have gone up Astronomically. They not realize people shop here are low inc? The delusioned upper middle class employees/volunteers here Need to go to Ross and TJ Maxx and look at the pricing there and then go back to pick and adjust their prices to reflect a fraction of what those stores charge -get a reality check! read more

I have been recently purging a lot of really nice stuff and donating it to different thrift stores around San Mateo County. I had a great experience at Turnstyle (https://www.yelp.com/biz/turnstyle-thrift-shop-san-mateo) -- the women there were waiting for me to drop off my donations, and gave me some background on what they do. SUPER NICE. As a long-time animal rescuer and caretaker, I was excited to drop off some bags to Pick of the Litter, which supports the Peninsula Humane Society. Here was my experience: -- Called to make sure they were open. The woman on the phone couldn't wait to get off the line with me. "We're open until 4 pm" was all she could muster, and there were no niceties on the phone. -- My husband and I brought several bags of donations to the store. As we entered, no one greeted us, and both women, one working the register and the one flitting about, didn't even acknowledge us. When I tried to find out where the donation drop-off was, some nice patron finally pointed me to the drop-off station. After my first impression, I had no interest in lingering or supporting their cause. I wish I had donated my stuff someplace else. As we left...no acknowledgement that we had even been at the store at all. No "have a good day" or anything. I'm not expecting them to roll out the red carpet for me or my philanthropy, but at least greet me when I walk through the freakin' door! read more

When I was little, my mom and I used to drive down to San Mateo to shop for furniture at the Pick of the Litter. Now, it's even closer to home, so my mom and I still bond over raw food from Que SeRAW down the street and a shopping trip into Pick of the Litter. I can't say enough good stuff about this place. Really, it should be more like a list: - They have cats. I'm SOLD. - They usually have some really cute antique jewelry in the front. - Rich Burlingame ladies continually drop off their Ann Taylor and BCBG stuff, so stuff is always ripe for the picking. - They have a great book collection at great prices. - You can usually bargain with the staff if you're feeling poor. - Great furniture and housewares selection - The proceeds go to helping animals. So this place is definitely worth planning your day around their limited hours. Get yourself a cute new purse and support kittens! Yeah! read more

5:00pm - Get off work. 5:20pm - Get home, change, look for local thrift stores online. 5:25pm - Call what looks like a great little thrift store to check store hours, get told that store is open until 6pm. 5:30pm - Depart for thrift store, looking forward to 20 minutes of bargain hunting and maybe letting my money go to help an animal shelter. 5:40pm - Walk into thrift store and head for the housewares section. I hope they have a blender! 5:47pm - Curt female employee announces the store is now closed and to head to the register. I don't even know where to begin, all I can get out at the moment is: I love this place!! Let's start with parking. Parking is super easy. There is a parking lot right beside the store. It is metered, however one quarter gets you at LEAST 25 minutes. Amazing! The store itself is very organized. Furniture in the front, books in the back, and racks of clothes in between. There is also both a men's and women's restroom as well as two fitting rooms. The selection is great! The prices stay around one digit. I walked out with a $4 Michael Kors lace tanktop and a $7 cream cable knit sweater. I would have walked out with more but my cousin beat me to the cash register with items we both wanted. There is a resident cat who wanders around but it didn't bother me one bit. I love this place!! I will definately be coming back very soon! read more

I nearly gave POTL four stars, then realized I would be cursed. And who needs that? So I'll simply describe the missing star instead. But not until you know the important stuff: Shop There. You'll be helping animals in need of homes. You may even see a few eligible felines around the store. Pick of the Litter has furniture, clothes, jewelry, purses, and occasionally animal cages (bird, small critters...), etc. I have found some great shoes and purses there, but the women's tops and sweaters I see are very out of date and often look worn. Fantastic little thrift shop that give all proceeds to the SPCA! (help the little homeless chihuahuas out! *wo0of* *meow*) Mind you, I am just not a thrift shop type of gal. People that shop at thrift stores LITERALLY come from all walks of life. -people who want new clothes but would rather buy used clothes because it's cheaper -hipsters and scene kids thrifting for the sake of trendiness -people looking for that hidden gem Then there's me, curious, but not quite into digging through old, used things that may closely resemble trash. Ah...I'm not talking shit, but that's the case with most thrift stores. Pick of the litter is entirely opposite and is always kept neat and tidy. I love walking through the store just browsing quickly... I rarely DIG because ... well maybe i'm just not that hardcore yet. For now, it'll be one of my fav thrift stores...(if i ever decide to go thrifting again) I think it makes me appreciate it more because it's proceeds funds the homeless animals. I love em.
