When pulling into the "Fugi" hibachi place next door, I had all anticipation of getting some desert there, maybe getting a pint of ben and jerries at home when we watched a movie after. However, we walked by treat, and I knew there was no other place. Granted we went at 8pm, the cupcake was big, delicious, and you can put any topping on it you want! i got chocolate on chocolate with sour patch kids, brownies, oreos, heath bar. My only suggestion would be to put a little more frosting on the cupcake, and maybe to offer a cream cheese frosting. Otherwise, the store was really presentable, had a fun theme and atmosphere, and if I were 9 I would love a bday party here! Service was very disappointing. We decided to take our two kids there to design their own cupcakes, not realizing that there was a birthday party going on. The employees told us we can still make the cupcakes in the room next to the party. However, from that point on they were surly and seemed reluctant to help us in any way. I went last week and spoke to Aiden, who explained there had been a change in vendor for an essential ingredient and that it created subpar cakes. This place was suggested to me as a great gluten-free bakery. When I walked in I was overwhelmed by the smell--I don't know what it was, but it was a plasticky, artificial smell and it was really unpleasant, though I think it was meant to smell like candy. I bought a box of six gluten-free, allergen-free cupcakes, each a different flavor, and brought it home. However, after trying a few bites of each one, I didn't want to finish any of them. They all have the same weird, unpleasant taste underlying whatever flavor each one is meant to be. I will not go back. read more

I wanted to give it two stars, but felt that might not be fair after a one-cupcake experience. Cake is probably my favourite food, so I'll try a cupcake or slice of cake just about anywhere. I use a chocolate cake with vanilla frosting as a benchmark, as most places make it, it's fairly basic, and it's my favourite. I purchased a pre-made cupcake here; the "bar" doesn't really appeal to me. The cupcake was only okay. I was expecting so much more. Pros: - Shop is really cute and friendly. - Staff was also friendly! - Cupcakes are nice looking - Frosting was okay. Cons: - Frosting was okay, but not great. Very light and creamy, which was nice, but lacked flavour. - Not nearly enough frosting to balance the cake, let alone satisfy a frosting lover. - Cake had a pretty good texture, but was slightly bitter. I say this as a person who eats dark chocolate plain. I didn't eat most of the cake. In all, I found the cupcake to be lackluster, and couldn't even eat all of the cake because of its slight bitter tone and the lack of frosting. I might try again for a different flavour, but I'm not counting this among good cupcakeries I know of. read more

So today I went into the cupcake bar in Needham. Addie is great and her staff is equally as nice but frozen cupcakes are not nor will it ever be okay. Due to the state of where things are at I certainly understand not letting people into the whole store. I realized that the young lady serving me was taking a bit longer to come back with a peanut butter overload cupcake and when I looked fully into the,store my cupcake was being taken out of a microwave. So I asked was the cupcake fresh and was informed that it was made yesterday but frozen to keep the fresh taste. Today was allergy free cupcake day. Well the cupcake was slightly warm on the outside but stone cold in the middle. The frosting was frozen solid and was not edible. The young lady mentioned to give it a few mins and it will be ready to eat. Well I drove to Randolph which is about 20 mins away and the frosting was still not edible. Very much disappointed. If they want to sell day old cupcakes then the least that they can do is sell them for less than $5 dollars. I will drive the distance and go to Georgetown cupcakes in Boston. read more

Well, we went(4/18/2011) because we saw it on the Phantom Gourmet, what a disappointment. The girl behind the counter never mixed in our toppings, as seen on the Phantom Gourmet so I figured maybe they didn't do that anymore, only to hear the next girl behind the counter offer to mix in the toppings for the next customer. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!! The cupcakes were dry and crumbly. The tops of the cupcakes were hard and crunchy. Over cooked or stale??? Not worth the 1/2 hour trip to get there. read more

Over the top. Heavy cake, heavy icing. Overworked flavor combos. A pound of sugar, eggs, and butter per item. (And it's reflected in the price.) Could only eat 1/3 of a cupcake and felt "yuck" the rest of the day, as did kids. I'm not a health food nut---by any stretch of the imagination. I'm so excited there is a place to get dairy free cupcakes! Unlike other places, they never run out of the dairy free options and they have so many great flavour combinations. Only down sides are: the cupcake base is hit and miss depending on the day. Sometimes it's moist and amazing and other times it's dry. Not sure if this has to do with how old the cupcakes are. Purchased a dairy free full-sized cake from the fridge and was very disappointed that the outer edges of the cake were extremely over-baked and inedible (the middle of the cake was still yummy). I would have tried to return the cake but it's too hard to do things like that with an infant in tow. Lastly, I was disappointed to learn that all dairy free cakes have to be gluten free, even if you special order in advance! I guess they don't have a separate recipe. Overall though this place is lovely and I'm so happy to be able to easily buy dairy free cupcakes! read more

I'm in one of those moods where I could go on a rant here, but I'm going to keep it simple. I was debating ordering several dozen for a party so my husband picked up 4 on his way home for us to try. The flavors were assorted, choc & vanilla, some had a filling, assorted frosting. They were all bland and dry although the choc was a tad better than the vanilla cupcake. They were pretty and quite large, but underwhelming in taste and freshness. For $4+ per cup cake, I'll bake my own. read more

What a very fun place! My husband and I each got a cupcake (which were a little normal-tasting, but good). The fun is more in picking your frosting and toppings. My 3yo son doesn't really like cupcakes and they were nice enough to give him a little cup of mini M&Ms at no charge. I hope they expand the menu a little bit, maybe include cookies or even ice cream. Another suggestion would be to have dixie cups and pitchers of water. Cupcakes make me thirsty and I probably would've eaten more of mine had I had a little cup of water with it. It's been three years since my last visit to Treat. I'm happy to report that the cupcakes are still amazing. We got the vanilla birthday cake confetti cupcakes with buttercream frosting and rainbow sprinkles. The cupcakes were unbelievably moist. The flavor was excellent; not cloyingly sweet with a subtle welcome note of salt in the buttercream. When I think of great cupcakes that are truly "worth it," Treat Cupcake Bar is the first place that comes to mind. read more

The pink lemonade cupcake is really good...oh heck, all of them I've tried have been good (the Needham is what a hostess cupcake wants to be). Too lazy to do the make your own thing, but be warned that they mix your topping choice into the frosting. I really had high hopes for Treat and drove about a half hour just for cupcakes. I was so disappointed. I bought two chocolate cupcakes both with buttercream frosting. First off, instead of the cake being light and fluffy, it was dense and tasted kind of stale. Secondly, there was not enough frosting on them. The frosting tasted pretty good and ended up being the only thing I finished, but why would you have such a large cupcake with such little frosting? I don't think I'll be going back. read more

I had high hopes for this place... I imagined it to be like walking into Charlie's Chocolate Factory. However, I was quite disappointed upon my arrival. The cupcakes were "slim pickins" and they had no mini cupcakes available. The reviews below talk about how the place smells like Cupcake Heaven when you walk in. I walked in and all I could smell was cleaning products. Meh, not the biggest deal. What pained me the most was taking a huge bite out of the cupcake I ordered as soon as I got back to work... I like cupcakes. I work in Needham Center. This place has been taunting me with a "coming soon" sign for over two months - and then they kind of opened, closed because they were having trouble keeping up with the volume, and reopened for real this past Friday. The store is cute. Very clean. The cupcakes - the regular ones - cost $3.25 per. The "make your own option" - which is why this is a cupcake "Bar" and not just a cupcake "Bakery" - is $4.25 per cupcake. I bought two of the regular treats: the Needham Cream Pie, and the Lemon Drop (a seasonal item), and an iced tea. This set me back $9 and change. The Needham Cream Pie is a vanilla cupcake, with vanilla cream filling and a dark chocolate ganache: essentially it's a boston cream pie in cupcake form.(I'm a sucker for a good Boston cream pie.) The Lemon Drop was a vanilla cupcake with lemon buttercream frosting and a candied lemon peel candy thing on top. The cupcakes are a good size. Moist, with a good crumb. Of the two, I preferred the Needham Cream Pie. The ganache was good, the vanilla filling was tasty. The lemon one was OK, not great: the frosting was too sweet for my tastes. Also, it overpowered the cupcake a bit. Overall, the place was OK - maybe even good. But it was pricey, and I'd rather have a basic cupcake from a place like Lyndells for $1.50 than a crazy expensive $3.25 one. Iced tea was good, but not as good as Starbucks. read more

The pre-made cupcakes looked good in the display case. However, I chose to make my cupcake combination. I was surprised by the cost of $4.25 ($4.55 incl. tax) for one cupcake. Since I was treating friends, my bill added up quickly. When choosing my cupcake flavor, I asked what the seasonal flavor was. I was told they didn't have one. As one of my three treats, I wanted the fresh fruit selection. I did not see the fruit on display, so I asked what fruit was in the fresh fruit selection. I was told that they didn't have any fresh fruit selection. Before frosting my cupcake, I tried the cake to get just that taste. It was a little hard breaking off a corner of the cake because the cake was so dense and dry with an outside sticky surface. I was not impressed with the flavor. Stopped in on Saturday evening and the selection was pretty slim. We tried the Bugs Bunny (carrot cake) and Sprinkle Me Silly (funfetti with vanilla frosting) and both were just ok. They were really heavy with thick frosting and the flavor wasn't great on either. When I was reading the reviews, I was expecting dry cupcakes. I didn't think the cupcakes were dry. I ordered a half dozen with my Groupon: red velvet, funfetti, mint chocolate, cookie dough, oreo, and a vanilla. I enjoyed the red velvet and it had a nice cream cheese frosting. Not too sweet. I disliked all the vanilla cakes especially the funfetti. They were nasty and after 1 bite, I threw them out. I like the mint chocolate cupcake but there was something about the mint frosting that was a little funky. The cookie dough was ok, the dough was a little salty. and the oreo had bits of oreo cookie underneath the frosting and the frosting was a little buttery. I like the chocolate cake better at Treat. I recently ordered 80 cupcakes with 2 custom logo designs on top of them. I had to place the order on very short notice and they were so easy to work with! They replicated the logo with buttercream frosting on top and they looked and tasted great. Everything was delivered on time as well. I would definitely order from here again! read more

I would like to think that the cupcake fad isnt dead...yet. Treat Cupcake Bar breathes life into the theory that cupcakes arent just for kids and can still be delicious/rich. I ordered the Funky Chunky Oreo and it was really good. Not the best cupcake i've ever had but still really what i was looking for as dessert. I think one way it wouldve been better is if they put the oreo frosting as the cream inside so it would explode when you bite into it. I chose to play it safe and pick from the standard cupcakes, but you can also go to the Bar and make your own cupcake with gummy worms and crazy concoctions like a mad mixologist. Overall great idea and alot of fun, but not sure if its sustainable to last the years with its prices. read more

I have read and learned a little about this space months ago but was waiting to visit when I was in the area since I don't live too close. I parked on the street across from the entrance, there are metered spaces along this street which makes it easy to park. The facade is a large glass window with their logo decal across the front, as you enter in front of you there is an under-counter display case with prepared cupcakes. there are about 8 different options. Traditional ones like vanilla or chocolate, red velvet, and also fluffernutter, mint-chip, etc... I can't remember them all. The cake all looks the same other than the color - very flat cake... probably a good amount of oil in the cake i imagine? Some of the frosting is dolloped on top by using an ice cream scoop. Not a very nice presentation at all. The size is appropriate for the price, but for such a stylized space with bells and whistles with t-shirts, snazzy packaging, glass front space, etc... you would expect to find a better or more finished cupcake... I'm just saying. To your right there is the cupcake bar with all the garnishes - not sure if there is a time that it is open or accessible all day? So, I ordered a chocolate with vanilla and the fluffernutter. The chocolate cake is light and not too sweet but the frosting is sweet and not very good. The fluffernutter has a nice peanut butter flavor, but again the cake is light and flavorless. Not much substance to the cake and the frosting makes up more than the difference on its end... If you live in the area why not stop in, but it is not worth an out of the way trip. One note about this business is that it does seem to have a mission on giving back, which is great. They have an event under the title "treat others well" when the proceeds will be donated to local causes. I hope that they improve upon the presentation of the cupcakes and work on the texture and flavor of the cake. Also, I was the only person there, but the girl assisting me was attentive and responsive. I am buying a cupcake not a car - don't need that much assistance. One other note is that my cupcakes were packaged in a nice plastic, protective container and then a handle was stapled around it to finish the packaging -- again, there is a lot more thought put into packaging and more needs to be put into the cupcakes. The cupcakes are yummy! I have tasted few equals to their vanilla buttercream frosting (it's great). As a native Needhamite, I went here on their opening day July 3rd. I had a fourth-of-July themed cupcake, which was almost perfect except that there was a rather large peppermint stick on top which took way too to long to eat: I want to enjoy the cupcake longer than the topping! I returned here recently and had the "Plain Jane" vanilla with vanilla frosting (my favorite kind of cupcake, so a good way to measure the quality of a cupcake place). As already mentioned, their frosting MAKES their cupcakes. They get points for employing teenagers (it was always impossible to get hired in Needham when I was in high school), but lose points for not training them to greet people. Because they are a new place and they have this novel "design-your-own" cupcake idea, they should really have employees that offer to explain the process to the customers. The cupcake bar was a lot of fun to bring my preteen and teenaged little cousins to for an outing. I ordered a premade red velvet cupcake and my boyfriend had the peanut butter bomb. The frosting on my cupcake was the best thing I've ever had, and that says a lot considering I'm not big on frosting. My boyfriend loved the peanut butter bomb, and the girls loved the cupcakes they got to make. They even had special boxes to keep the cupcakes from getting smushed and bouncing around. A friend brought me home a chocolate cupcake with a huge dollop of mint oreo frosting on the top. I don't care if the rest of what they sell stinks, this cupcake was pure heaven. The cake part was more moist and tasty than anything I've ever had. Pricey for a cupcake but not compared to a slice of cake you'd get for dessert at a restaurant.
