Great first experience at Trek Bicycle in San Rafael. I brought my electric bike in for a brake adjustment, something I've put off for a while. My brakes were making an annoying sound but it didn't seem to compromise its performance. I wasn't sure where to take my bike locally since I had ordered it online. I wish I had gone to Trek Bicycle sooner. The experience of making an appointment & receiving the service happened in less then 24 hours. Amazing. Better yet, the price was outstanding. Their price for the service was very fair. They also happen to be exceptionally friendly here. Thanks Cooper! Quick note in case you're wondering, they apparently take in any brand of bike in for repairs. Pretty amazing. The store itself also had great bike gear, some of the best selection I've seen in Marin and that's saying something. Give these guys a shot if you're in need of bike repair. We were visiting San Rafael about a month ago to ride China Camp when I realized my front brakes were done. It was a gorgeous warm Saturday and we thought the chances of actually getting a fix or replacement were very slim. They answered the phone, listened to the issue and had us come on in. Figured out a solution, left the bike there for about 90 minutes while we had lunch down the street, and shortly thereafter I was enjoying my new and upgraded brakes! Although a Trek store, they do not discriminate other makes lol... Friendly, plenty to do but not hurried with us, beautiful clean shop full of new bikes including electric hybrids. I live near here and sometimes they have been more helpful than other times, but today I got the nicest service and right before closing. Cooper was cheerful, positive, encouraging and helpful. He told me some useful tips I never knew after years of solo biking. He gave me 2 end caps for my handlebars for safety concerns and wished me well, all within 5 minutes of closing time. I am now thoroughly sold on my local shop ....and will go there for all my needs. I can ride or walk there easily AND they're right next to Chase Ace my other favorite neighborhood venue. After having a beer at Pond Farm, one naturally thinks of biking! This is a super clean, well-organized shop. I had a chance to chat with the owner, who spent a lot of time with me explaining the type of bikes and accessories they sell here. He went out of his way to explain to me the details about e-bikes, and the various options they have. He showed me one of the German ebikes, and explained how the mechanism works. The owner also explained to me the history of this shop, and its many years in the town. I thought he was super knowledgeable about this business, as well as the history of this area. I really appreciated him taking all this time with me. A really friendly place and a very clean shop. There is no high pressure sales tactics whatsoever. Just nice people. read more

This shop has gone downhill since Trek bikes took over. They no longer honor the maintenance policy that was sold under the ACME shop - which was for free tuneups for the life of the bike. They now only give one free tuneup and then call it quits. Don't even bother with the free tune up. DO NOT get your bike tuned up here. My bike gearing ran worse AFTER I took my bike in for a tune up. I had to go back on 3 separate occasions for them to attempt to "fix" my derailur they messed up during the initial tuneup. They were always nice about taking a look at it and fiddling with it, but never did apologize. Since it still wasn't fixed after 3 tries I went down to a shop in Fairfax and the mechanic fixed it in a few minutes. It seems the novice mechanic at the Trek store didn't understand how to setup the Shimano Ultegra trim settings. If you need a repair on a high end bike, go elsewhere or you're gambling with what you'll get back. read more

I spent a few weeks shopping for a new Road Bike. I visited a few stores and websites, and I thought I was going to buy a model online, until I walked into Summit Bicycles. I wasn't looking for race bike, or high end equipment or anything fancy at all, I just needed a new road bike for casual biking, nothing serious. Their selection is mainly Trek brand (for road bikes at least). Oh, they also do bike rentals, that's good to know! We first looked around, and the salesperson, Scott, came to offer help. I had a bad, pushy experience at Mike's Bike so I didn't really want his help, but gave it a chance. I told him what my needs were. He was very informative and helpful, gave me a few options. They had my size in store so I am glad I was able to test drive and walk out with the bike on the same day. Jack was in their workshop, and was going to tune up the bike. He was busy helping other customers, and apologized for having me wait. He was also very helpful and answered the maintenance questions I had. What I was going to spend didn't seem to matter to them. They cared about what would be the right fit for me. I asked Jack if they worked on commission, and he said no. That's why they are all so helpful, they are not fighting over customers) I found them very polite and knowledgeable. I am very happy with my experience with this store. I had been a dedicated customer to Acme for years, "Jim" took great care of my two-wheeled dog sulkies for five years, then my recumbent trike for two years. Recently I had a problem with the trike, and was told Jim was no longer working there. I took the trike in anyway, and for $115, they totally screwed it up! Not only was the problem I brought it in for worse, to the point where it was unusable, but even with both hands I could no longer shift my rear derailer. Two different people at Acme insisted that there was nothing they could do to make the shifter better. I took the trike to Sunshine Bikes in Fairfax and they fixed the shifter immediately, and fixed the initial problem as well. Acme had neglected to do a couple of vital, always-done things when replacing the chain, so it cost me another $100 to fix what they had screwed up (!). Needless to say, I will never return to Acme. read more

Jim and staff are great. A very clean nice showroom floor with a top notch selection. I stopped through here on my way to Calistoga seeking a part for my Trek Domane. They didn't have it in stock but helped me out by borrowing from a recently assembled bike. I wish I lived closer so I could have them as my shop but I live in Gilroy. Unfortunately my Trek dealer thinks since bikes are in such demand they can eliminate the need to provide friendly customer service. They are just clerking the tickets and they do not follow up, want to answer questions and act like they hate working there. Jim restored my faith in bike shops as he could feel my frustration and made me feel like a guy who just bought a 14k bike. Definitely will find a way to buy from them again. read more

Great people! I had some experience with them many years ago when my wife bought a bike from another (chain) dealer who really didn't care about the sale after it was made. She needed a basket. Acme took care of what she wanted, installed it and offered her any help she might need in the future. Skip forward several years. I just bought an E-Bike on line. I have re-built several 10 speed bikes over the years and know a bit about what I'm doing but no expert to be sure, and this is my first e-bike. This bike (from an on-line company, good reputation, no issue with them) came with a considerable amount of finish work to be done. No problem. Got it all together but it would not change gears. I adjusted the derailleur per manual...still, no go. I called Acme and they took it in that day, and had me on the road in less than an hour. Apparently the derailleur guard was bent during shipping. Great service from a local shop from whom I didn't even buy the bike! Scott was the gentlemen I dealt with. Go there. Buy stuff! read more

Well, I had an experience that runs counter to the majority of posts here. I'm moving to Novato and need a shop that services Trek. Summit was closest, I needed a new chain, deraileurs needed adjustment, head was squeaking, brakes were wearing down, etc, etc. Time for a tune up ($70), the perfect opportunity to check out the shop. I was a little surprised by the final bill ($130) but figured the chain, new brake pads, maybe that's the cost in San Rafael. But on my ride to work today I discovered the deraileurs hadn't be adjusted, the brake lines were loose, and the front brake pads were noisier than ever. The head, OTOH, was silent and there was the nice new chain... Those were worth a star each, I suppose. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, though there was no one else in the shop when I dropped off and picked up. In any event, I won't be going back. read more

I'm in the market for a mid-range road bike and stopped decided to check out Summit. I worked with a man named Will who took great care of me. He was very knowledgeable about the fine details of their line of Trek road bikes. He took extra time to fit me to the right size and even checked out my shoulder position as I pedaled the bike on their indoor bike machine. The bike that I'm considering definitely seems like a good deal. I have not decided what to buy yet but if you are looking to buy, Summit is a great place to start. read more

They have a good selection of bikes and parts and most of the staff is super friendly and ready to help, but unfortunately one bad experience spoils all the good sometimes. I needed a spoke wrench but didn't know what size would work. I went in with my wheel to find the right size. The young guy that helped me was great, but then he brought it to a mechanic in the back (I think his name is Bill), who was short and abrupt with the kid helping me, and a little snippy with me too. Spoke wrenches are color-coded according to size. He determined that it was a size 0, the guy helping me rang me up and when I got home to true my wheel discovered that it was too small! I was absolutely dumbfounded as I witnessed the mechanic put it on the truing stand. I don't know what he was measuring... I came back and while I was returning the wrench the mechanic. I informed him that the wrench was the wrong size. The other staff confirmed it as well. He insisted that it was the right size, but sometimes has to be "worn in" to fit. (!?!). I have never heard of a wrench that would change sizes as it gets worn in - I don't know who would find that acceptable When I tried a multi-size wrench, it turned it was a size 1; quite different from a size 0, (which I reminded him he insisted it was). Undaunted, he helpfully asserted* that I should get the multi-size wrench. I have no plans on returning as there are tons of bike shops nearby. All it would have taken is a short apology... *(Sarcastic narrative) read more

Unfortunately I had a similar experience as Ed V. with apparently the same mechanic - Bill. I brought my bike in for service and fairly quickly found myself arguing with him. Besides the arguing, he didn't listen to me when I was describing the issues I wanted him to investigate - evidenced by the fact that it didn't get fixed. So for me, mediocre work and a bad attitude mean I am not going back. read more

I was a long time customer of Summit/Acme and had an outstanding order for a new crankset and derailleur (GRX) for my Trek Checkpoint - after a long delay due to Covid-19, parts finally arrived, and Trek Bicycle contacted me and did a nice install at a reasonable price. Kudos for continuity from previous owners. Ian at the counter was very helpful, and quickly fixed a disc brake rubbing issue we noticed when I came by to pick up the bike. Service team was polite and friendly. The store is definitely stocking a few more things since Trek acquired it (although mostly Bontrager brand). They have a lot of e-bikes in stock, and you can rent them to try out. Hope the store succeeds in its new incarnation, they're doing a lot of things right, but you never know in Marin with its preference for non-chain stores. read more

I was looking around for a new bike at the various bike shops around the North Bay, Mike's Bikes, Performance, etc. until I found a good deal on an entry level Trek with an aluminum frame and carbon fork. The great staff here helped me out and while they suggested a hybrid I really wanted to go with a road bike and I don't regret my choice one bit. Sure the components could be better but the frame is good and you can always upgrade components. Instead of using the bike for commuting I've mostly been using it for fun rides on the weekend and at lunch or after work, with the recent excellent weather it has been difficult to stay inside. The only issue have been a cut in the tyre but that happens so I bought a better tyre to replace it. When I've been back they're always happy to help. One great benefit with buying the bike at Summit is that you get free tuneups. Yeay :) EDIT: So I left San Rafael and moved to Canada and was using the bike here and it was nice. However after about a year it got stolen outside a shopping mall. Which obviously made me quite unhappy and the security staff at the mall couldn't help me. Also I hadn't written down the serial number but I called Acme as they are called now and they were able to find the serial number of my bike so I could report the bike stolen to the police here with a serial number. The police found it in their regular check up at various pawn shops and I got it back. So thank you Acme. read more

After moving to California two days before Christmas we came in on Christmas Eve as the store was closing just to buy a couple of baskets for my daughter's bike. There was one person in the shop, doors closed, but he invited us in. He was extremely friendly and gave us great information regarding a kids bike we had just purchased off Craigslist. He asked us to bring the bike in and cleaned it up for us in addition to helping us select bells and baskets for the bike. We were so impressed and happy with the experience we ended up buying our other daughter a bike on the spot. We were very happy with the experience especially since we had just come from another Marin bike shop where even though there were several employees milling around none seemed interested in helping us lowly non-mountainbiking types. read more

My husband and I have been customers of Acme Bikes for over a decade. They tune up our bikes and we buy gear there. What puts Acme Bikes at the top of my list for bike shops in Marin is the 5 star customer service I experience every time I walk in the store. I often pop in because I am having an issue at the moment and need help figuring it out. Every single time this happens someone takes care of me. It is a small place with just a couple people working at any given time. Don't expect a person to rush on over and wipe the sweat of your brow, it ain't that type of place. Employees are genuinely interested in helping you as soon as they can but will continue helping the customer they are with before helping you- the way it should be. It feels like family, like home. I wouldn't consider myself a bicyclist. I primarily ride my bike to work and occasionally for an early ride on the week end. Customer service is very important to me. I will pay more for the same item in a store that treats it customers like they want their business. I need a minor tune up on my bike, so I headed to Summit Bicycles this morning at 10:00 and they were not open yet. I went down the street to Mike's Bicycles and waited at the counter for a good 5 minutes while one employee never turned around and the other had a personal conversation on his cell phone. When I was finally acknowledged I was told they couldn't even look at my bike until Friday and the cost would start at $75 and go up from there depending on what was needed. I gave them my name and number and headed back to Summit. I got there right when they opened the doors. There was a couple at the counter in front of me with two bikes. I was acknowledged and told to go get my bike out of the car and that they would start working on it Tuesday. I went and got the bike and another employee approached me and asked if I was being helped. I told him I was waiting in line and he immediately took my bike and asked what I needed. He told me my bike didn't need a tune up, just some small minor adjustments and the bike would be ready this afternoon. This is my third experience at Summit and this is where I will go for all my biking needs. Oh, I was informed they were shot staffed that day because of a bike race. I will pick friendly short staffed service over a store full of employees that could care less whether you patronize them at all. read more

To preface this review it is my first. I am entirely too busy to bother but in the case of SUMMIT BICYCLES I was so appalled I felt it my duty to write about our experiences. I bought an overpriced seat from SUMMIT BICYCLES that I've subsequently seen for less online. I thought, well it was convenient and why not support the local folks and pay more right? So I didn't feel too bad about it. Then my girlfriend went in to purchase a basket from SUMMIT BICYCLES after being in a few days earlier to buy a light. Again, things were overpriced but we've just moved to the area and wanted to get to know our local bike shop. BAD IDEA! A man in his 30's literally got in my girlfriend's face in a confrontational manner right as she walked into SUMMIT BICYCLES and demanded to know what kind of shades she was wearing. As you would imagine, she was confused but answered that they were cheap knock offs she got from some department store. Before she could finish her sentence he accused her of going behind the counter and stealing his "brand new shades" the other day when she had been in the store. Then a second employee came at her and joined in on the accusations. They were both acting in an intimidating manner and unbelievably and unjustly harassing a petite female customer and accusing her of being a thief. She was in shock and so taken aback and upset at this verbal barrage she didn't know how to react beyond insisting she had not taken the man's sunglasses. After calling later that afternoon and speaking with "the manager" of SUMMIT BICYCLES I was surprised to hear him defend the 30 SOMETHING employee by saying that "she WAS there at the exact time the sunglasses went missing." I was completely blown away but keeping my composure I then asked if I might speak with the owner and left my name and number. As you may have guessed and as is the case with other aspects of their poor customer service and price gouging I have not heard back from the owner nor do I expect to. PLEASE heed this cautionary tale and take advantage of the other bike stores in San Rafael. Save yourself money and frustration by steering clear of the feckless and HIGHLY UNPROFESSIONAL SUMMIT BICYCLES on 4th Street. read more
