Bruschetta

Pros: Upstairs seating with outdoor patio and bar Enjoyed bruschetta and fresh mozzarella Caesar salad dressing was tasty and I added shrimp Friendly staff Cons: Can be very noisy with large groups. The acoustics isn't great. Many dishes came out cold and their timing wasn't great. Half our table finished their meals before the other half got theirs Pro tip: Nice family owned place with good food. Maybe go with a smaller group and don't go during a busy time.

Spinach salad with salmon! Fantastic!

Absolutely delicious cuisine From Chef Gabriel! Jorge was an excellent & friendly hospitality Professional! Curt the Owner even said hello! Of course Freddy is awesome! Ambiance could use a little romantic touch but overall was nice!

I've seen this all the time, everytime I'm at Stanford University. Today, is the day I check-it-out. Today, I'm in the South Bay Area. I felt like going for some more Italian cuisine. Tonight, I'm here at Trellis Restaurant near Palo Alto. When I got here, I happen to actually meet the owner. The owner, asked me what I do for a living? And I kinda laughed. Then the owner goes and ask me again, what I do for a living? And I was like, I'm just in the neighborhood. There's some good people Working here. I was sat down in the Dining Room for awhile, when suddenly they offered to show me the Upstairs on the 2nd floor. So I took it. It's a very beautiful Banquet Room, and a perfect Venue or Event Space to throw a Party or Celebration. I appreciate, and glad they showed me around. And I saw something that really caught my eye on the menu, it's intriguing. I just got to have that Susan's downfall (TM): Cheese & herb Raviolis w/ Gorgonzola Cream Sauce & Toasted Almonds. I can tell the Ravioli was made fresh and In-House. The Pasta was Al dente. The Gorgonzola is so velvety, and Luxurious. I like how they put it under the Broiler for a moment. And the slivers of Almonds, was a nice touch, it makes it stand out. They even showed me how to dip the Bread in the Sauce at the end, that was the move, it was brilliant. It reminds me of the first time I had a Cheese Fondue 23 years ago. They get some points, for originality. I was thinking this was going to be a 3.9-4.3 stars, I was thinking I was going to give this 4.3 stars, I want to give this a 4.4 stars, this could be a 4.4 stars on a good day, but I give this 4.3/4.4 stars out of 5 stars. Bellísimo.

Went here on a Friday night with my homie. Not too crowded and opted for upstairs outdoor seating. Pretty hot day but there was a slight breeze. Definitely get the Riesling (5/5) so refreshing and I opted for the Parxxx Sole Fillet, orzo was a bit on the salty side. Homie got the prawns and finished it all. Highly recommended for italian feast with a nice outdoor ambiance.

Very nice decor and feel. They have a great outdoor seating area on the roof. They have a full bar and the drinks are good. They do take reservations as well as OpenTable reservations.

Trellis is a hidden gem. Food is consistently delicious...always tastes fresh and perfectly seasoned. They have the best carpaccio, also a fan of their lamb chops, fet prawns, and veal parmigiana. Staff is extremely friendly, very old school which makes for great ambiance! Check out their patio! Shout out to Gorge and Omar for always making me feel welcomed and being attentive.

Aside from very nice service this place was pretty dismal. Sat on the patio. It was pretty dirty. The food was not good either.

One never really knows when any restaurant will close, really, but this place just felt like such a Palo Alto institution that it couldn't close, but it did. I had been here at least once before, in the 1990s, when I was in college and my brother worked in Palo Alto. That era feels like the zenith of this upscale chain's cultural relevance, which made my most recent return that much more interesting. I expected things to have changed or at least to have felt different, but my experience in 2025 was eerily similar to my previous experience in 199x: I was expecting to be annoyed by pretentiousness but was instead wowed by the food and the service, which was excellent. But because it felt exactly the same, it didn't feel timeless; it felt dated in a way that I know rationally things are dated, but I'm a very nostalgic person by nature, so I love old things. But Il Fornaio felt too dated either to catch up with the times or to care that they were passing it by. Our large party was originally seated in a cramped area, but they were happy to re-seat us in the patio, which was covered and had heat lamps. That change made all the difference in our experience, because I know my mom, brother, and I would have been itching to get out of here as soon as possible if we had eaten inside. Instead, we enjoyed our leisurely meal, and even though my nephew (a Stanford student) had to bike back to campus, we took our time and relaxed. I can't say I'm sad Il Fornaio is gone. I didn't come here for almost thirty years, and it's not as if the entire chain is closing--at least I haven't heard that it is.

The focaccia bread and dipping sauce was very good to start. We also ordered the bruschetta trio. I hadn't read the menu clearly and they were large pieces of one with arugula, cherry tomatoes and an eggplant and onion bruschetta. I think if the bread was toasted better it would've been tastier. It is a bit difficult to eat as it is packed and wished the tomatoes were chopped up. I ordered the Carbonara Calabrese and never had carbonara with artichokes. It is a smaller portion for an Italian restaurant and unfortunately it was just okay. I really needed the crushed red pepper for more flavor. The guanciale had a bit too much fat for my liking. My friend had the gnocchi pomodoro and we thought the gnocchi was overcooked as it was quite mushy. Unfortunately I was disappointed as I had high hopes for this restaurant but have had much better.

One of my favorite things about this winery is the table-side tasting experience, it feels so much more relaxed and elevated compared to the traditional tasting bar setup. You can truly sit back, take your time, and enjoy the wines at your own pace. The wines themselves are fantastic, and I appreciate the variety they offer. It's clear there's a lot of care and quality behind every pour. I also love that they have food available, which makes it easy to turn a tasting into a full experience. Their patio is another huge plus--spacious, inviting, and dog-friendly, which is perfect for me. Bringing my dog, Chanel along makes the experience even better. On top of all that, the service is always warm, attentive, and welcoming. You really feel taken care of here. Unfortunately, this visit felt like a restaurant that's lost some of its spark. Happy hour was actually a pleasant surprise. The prices are excellent and make it easy to sample a variety of dishes. The Polpette and prosciutto with melon were enjoyable, but the croquettes were forgettable. The mussels and shrimp didn't taste particularly fresh, which was disappointing. The chicken had an unusual texture--somewhere between a chicken nugget and a crab cake. It just wasn't for me, The biggest letdown was the Bigoli e Coda. The pasta still had its signature chewy texture, but the sauce felt oily instead of rich, the braised oxtail lacked the deep, slow-cooked flavor I remembered, and the entire dish desperately needed seasoning. It used to be one of those dishes I'd recommend without hesitation. Not anymore. The seafood entrée was probably the strongest dish of the night, but even there it fell short. The fish was properly cooked, yet the skin lacked the crisp, golden finish that makes a skin-on fillet so satisfying. It was another dish that felt underseasoned and never quite came to life. That was really the theme of the evening: almost everything felt underseasoned. Nothing was inedible--it just lacked the vibrant flavors and careful execution that made Donato stand out years ago. I'm hoping this was simply an off night because Donato has earned a lot of goodwill over the years. But when a longtime favorite no longer tastes like the restaurant you remember, it's hard not to leave a little disappointed.
