The food was delicious. We went for an early lunch. We have been eating out in Santa Fe for all of our 62 years in New Mexico. We come from Central Illinois where the two main spices are ketchup and black pepper. It didn't take long for us to fall in love with New Mexican food with red and green chile. This place offers New Mexican and Southern Mexican specialties. We focus on their New Mexican dishes. My wife got the breakfast bowl with calibacitas and Christmas chile. I got the Huevos Rancheros, green. We were both impressed with the quality of the food and the friendliness of the service. We definitely will be back to try some of their other offerings. Before we left we bought a package of 6 bischochitos. We ate one in the car before we left. It was definitely the best we ever had. The anise flavor was just right and the cookie had a nice flakey texture. We also bought a package of frozen pork/red chile tamales. The man behind the counter said, 'Steam them for an hour." That told me the masa was ot pre-cooked, but sounded like an interesting think to do. It didn't sound like too big a deal since the tamales were wrapped traditionally in corn husks and tied with a corn husk strip, just like we learned to do years ago when we found out how much work it was to make tamales. After the steamed for the alotted time, I put one on a plate and unwrapped it. I was expecting a lot of masa an was surprised to see that there was a generous serving of pork and red chile and a layer of masa on the bottom. The filling was outstanding and very much like I was accustomed to in Northern New Mexico. The masa was flakier and not as heavy as what I hav e experienced before. On the usual masa-heavy tamales I end up discarding half of it or more and feel cheated on the filling. That was not the case wit Tres Colores Tamales. There is a generous amount a filling making them well worth the cost ($24 for 6). We will be back for more. They have a variety of other kinds, including green chile chicken, mole chicken, an vegan calibacitas I intend to try the chicken mole enchiladas on our next trip out. We discovered that we have been stuck too long in our circle of 4 favorite restaurants and need to be more adventurous. For now we have five favorite Santa Fe restaurants and this one takes first place. The place has the feel of a local favorite inspite of being just one block of the Plaza. While we were there they did a brisk take-out business with people who I assumed were local workers. Some have complained about the prices, but we found them to be in line with what we've become accustomed to, and considering the quality, well worth what we paid. It is clear that the owners value quality and taste. Their overall rating is well deserved. We are happy to have discovered them. read more

My son and i came for lunch on a wednesday around 12:00. We chose to sit outside. We were quickly greeted, given menus and told to order at the counter. I ordered the mole enchilada( calabacitas not meat) ( same price as mole chicken enchilida). and the house margarita. He ordered the mexican torta and a fanta soda. We got a house salad to share. I love to sit outside &watch the people. It's a bit small & tight fit on the sidewalk, but worth it! I do wish they had more storage inside to sit for rain / cold weather.... but that has never kept me away. ;) Try the specials! Always delicious! And why decide!? Located in downtown, this is a small restaurant on the corner. There's a couple seats inside, but most of the seating appears to be outside. They have a customer bathroom, but it's back behind the kitchen. I ordered the tacos. You get 3 for the meal. I liked the salsa options. The tacos themselves were okay. I was hoping for something more authentic being in the south west. Our server was friendly and the food arrived quickly. I did appreciate the multiple umbrellas that protect the customers from the hot sun when you're eating outside. read more

I don't remember this place from when I lived here, but my stepmother took me for a lovely lunch- and of course I had to order breakfast- as Mexican eggs with chile are my go to anytime any where. Huevos Rancheros was one of two breakfast items still being served at lunch, and the plate was perfect. Mostly I liked the "private" outdoor seating hidden away under big shade umbrellas in calming muted colors. Lovely visit and next time I'll explore the menu even more. The good: Staff was friendly & service was quick. The bad: I opted for the Tamale plate. The 2 tamales had far too much masa and not much filling. The beef had more filling than the chicken. The tamale seems to have been made from a 3/4 inch thick paddy of masa, made with course ground corn, w/ little or no additional herbs and spices. Then a small amount of shredded beef or chicken is placed in a row along the center and then folded in half like a tortilla. There may have been a heaping tablespoon of beans, and about the same amount of rice in two corners of 9" square plate. Look at the close up photo of the chicken tamale and you can see the large amount of masa compared to the filling. I am from South Texas so maybe that is the way the make "tamales" up here. Very disappointed, especially since there were a lot of rave reviews of the tamales. The cost for the plate was $15. Expensive for what I got. read more

I'd walked around Santa Fe looking at the sites and museums and wanted to try some authentic New Mexican cuisine. I sorted by rating and distance from the Rail Runner and it led me to Tres Colores. While it wasn't New Mexican - in fact it talked about Southern Mexican cuisine, I decided I wanted to try it. I came in at 3:45 which gave me 15 minutes to try their lunch specials. I was about to go with my usual enchiladas when the tamales caught my eye - I asked what was the day's tamale flavor and it was Green Chile Chicken - sold. It was ready in literal minutes (I was the only customer when I ordered) and it was as delicious as it looked. As I ate, I learned from another customer's line of questioning that the tamales were made at 9 and 2 pm each day -that's as fresh as you can get in my opinion. The staff was really friendly and one of the owners, Pedro, was working the register while I was there. If you're in Santa Fe, check them out - I get the sense they are relatively new because they were in the process of purchasing the parking spaces directly in front of their building but the permitting hadn't gone through. This is another small place, but they serve alcohol and the food is good. I recommend it if you are near some of the museums or galleries by the Plaza. read more

Was in on 4/1 for dinner takeout. Just wanted dinner and it was late. Ordered the chile rellenos and the veggie tamale. When we got to our hotel and opened our dinner we were greated by some delicious smells frrom both plates. Gotta say the rellenos were soft and cheesey good. The tamale was even more flavorful filled with veggies. The tamale masa was so light and flavorful it was not grainy like so many other tamales I've had. The beans were not refried, which was a good thing, full of flavor along with the perfectly cooked rice which had every grain separated not all mushed up. This is food so good not to be missed while in Santa Fe. One must also try their anise flavored sugar cookies. This place is outstanding. read more

Best mole I've had in the US. Service was efficient and the patio was lovely today. Husband had the fajitas and said those were ok. This place is insanely good. We are so lucky we just happened upon it. We'd just arrived in Santa Fe and had reservations for most nights of our trip, but we were free to explore our first night. Thank goodness we did. Our entire group was impressed. The service was fast and super friendly. Someone in charge -- the manager or owner? -- greeted us so warmly and chatted with us like we were friends. The dining room is basic, but modern and spacious. Not too loud. And the food! Wow. The enchiladas were on time, as were the Chile relleños. Just delicious. The guac was fresh and outstanding. The blue corn crust on the tilapia in the fish tacos looked solid, too. Margaritas were excellent. I tried the perfect and the signature and couldn't pick a favorite. Both rocked. My buddy said his skinny was terrific, too.
