The steak frites were ok but they should have been incredible considering they were twice the price I pay at our local French bistro in Chicago. We were here for their prefix Thanksgiving dinner. What a great experience. It is situated in the historical hotel. We arrived a bit earlier to our reservation. While waiting for our table, it was great to take some time admiring the architecture of this building with all the details all around. Plenty of seating available. We were guided to our table. Brian was our waiter and he was wonderful. He took care of a number of tables and we were all well cared for. I got the corn chowder, the seabass and the chocolate lava cake. Each kids ordered prime rib dinner, one with cheesecake and the other got brownie. I had a couple of bruts and kids had lemonades. My Brut was very crisp, good body and some floral note. My kids enjoyed their lemonades. I really enjoyed my corn chowder. Balanced flavor and the right type to kick off dinner. The sea bass was fresh and nicely flavored. I loved my lava cake. My dining companions said their tex-mex dishes were very bland, despite the "Christmas" (green and red chiles). I had a beet salad and the beets were miniscule, but the salad was fine. Ordinary. Everything high priced. If I could go for just guacamole and a cocktail, I would return. The server who made the guac table side was not at all friendly. Ordered the chile rellenos with the additional filet. The filet was cooked well, but absolutely no flavor. A little salt and pepper would have elevated this tremendously. Chiles were both very underdone and difficult to cut. Sauces (red and green) were both okay, but not very savory. Ordered the flan for dessert. Caramel sauce was the kind that was squeezed out of a bottle and not traditional sauce made during baking. Flan lacked traditional flavors but was okay. Again, service was spot on. Our server for the evening, Angel, greeted us and got us set up with glasses of Pellegrino with lime wedges. I ordered their Silver Coin Margarita. It is made with Mi Campo Blanco, Cointreau and fresh lime. I opted for the tajin rim. My sis-in-law requested a dry martini with a lemon twist. We perused the menu and made our selections. This was my daughter's first time being able to order an entrée "Christmas" style with both red and green chili smothering the dish. She chose the enchiladas with chicken, pinto beans and it included pazole, sour cream, guacamole and pico de gallo. She enjoyed every bite. My sis-in-law selected the Coctel de Camaron, a combination of poached shrimp, spicy tomato broth, avocado, cucumber, onion, cilantro and lime. It came with tortilla chips. She also had the Strawberry Spinach salad. This creation had baby spinach, strawberries, goat cheese, green apples, red onion and roasted piñon all in a white balsamic-bacon vinaigrette. She thoroughly enjoyed her choices and it went well with her martini. I am a fan of a good stuffed chile. I chose the Rellenos De La Fonda with cheese and Christmas style. Mine came with a choice between black and pinto beans. I selected pinto. It also included pazole, guacamole, pico de gallo and sour cream. What a treat! The Hatch green chiles were meaty. I enjoyed the sides and toppings. The red and green chili smothering was delicious. It all went well with my margarita. After dinner, we chose to share the chocolate mousse which came topped with a scoop of prickly pear sorbet, garnished with fresh raspberries and raspberry coulis. My sis-in-law and I both ordered a cup of coffee with this treat. I went for decaf which was quite delicious. We all enjoyed the dessert. Overall great experience. The service was very slow even though there were several servers standing around and talking to each other. Pros: the table side guacamole was delicious and flavorful. Cons: the chips with the guacamole came straight from a bag, likely Tostitos. The sea bass was extremely bland. My dirty martini tasted like water and vodka, no vermouth. We went to the hotel to look at the architecture and were so charmed by the atmosphere in the restaurant that we decided to have breakfast the first morning. Everything was really delicious and the service was very attentive. The restaurant is historic and it's in a historic building + many famous people have traveled through this space. I loved it! The first morning I ordered bacon and eggs with country potatoes and toast. The toast was delivered with homemade orange marmalade which was out of this world. Good. The second morning I ordered huevos mortulenos, which for me was a step out of my comfort zone. It was absolutely delicious! Again, service was on point this morning as well. A fountain in between two ficus trees. The service was really great. Super friendly. We didn't have a reservation and walked right in on Sunday evening. Shared the shrimp cocktail and the steak frites. Shrimp cocktail was served in a tall glass with saltines and tortilla chips. A little sweet and tangy with cucumbers, avocado, and chunks of shrimp. Was delicious and refreshing. The steak frites was cooked rare the way I like it, cut into pieces, and served with some kind of coffee chili type of sauce that was excellent. The shoestring fries were crisp and hot. It also came with roasted turnips and Brussels sprouts which were nicely charred and crunchy. Great meal. Would definitely return. The La Plazuela is located in the La Fonda hotel right off the lobby. The decor is very bright, cheerful and done in the local Southwest style. We had breakfast twice during our stay and lunch once. The food is delicious, and funny enough all three meals we ended up with the same server, and once he recognized us, he was very friendly and we had great service. The ambiance is nice, the fountain in the middle adds a very nice touch, and we sat next to the fountain once and it was lovely. The short rib tacos were really tasty and the shredded short rib was so tender it melted in your mouth. The tacos were served with green rice with pine nuts and black beans. For breakfast we enjoyed avocado toast, unlike any I have had. It was wheat bread with almond fig jam, arugula, avocado, onion and a scrambled egg on top. Mr. B had the Huevos Motulenos, two eggs over easy on top of two corn tortillas covered in Tomatillo salsa, Queso Fresco, black beans on the side and a delicious grilled plantain. It was so delicious I ordered it on our last morning and Mr. B went with the Breakfast Burrito which he said was wonderful. I am in Santa Fe, NM. La Plazuela is the primary restaurant for The La Fonda hotel just off the central Plaza. This space was formely an outside venue in the early 20th century for special events surrounded by the hotel. La Fonda opened in 1609, the current structure dates from 1922. Now it is a wonderful relaxing place to dine with a flagstone floor, natural wood columns and stained glass. The center fountain has operated for decades. I came for dinner on Sunday. Nice menu of seafood, meats, vegan and northern New Mexican specialties. My server was Carolina Z. I got sparkling water, a liter bottle of Pellegrinno for $10. I started with the Pink Mademoiselle, a non-alcoholic beverage with Prickly Pear puree, fresh lime, ginger beer & bitters. I added a chilled English Pea soup with extra virgin olive oil. Very smooth and refreshing soup. Next was a Spinach and Strawberry salad. Fresh spinach and ripe strawberries. Nice piped in music, but was interrupted by a mariachi group serenading a wedding party. Nice local cultural flavor. My entree was an off-menu seafood choice. Salmon stuffed with shrimp and scallops with creamed spinach and lentils. I paired it with a glass of Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay. Awesome place! We got our reservation wrong, so we had to sit outside of the main dining room, but the ambiance was still great. Inside was gorgeous. I loved the giant indoor trees with the fairy lights, the warm lighting, the tall wooden chairs, and the stained glass walls. It was cozy, yet elegant. They did a pretty good job at isolating the restaurant from the busyness of the surrounding hotel. I got the cucumber lemonade which was delicious and refreshing. We also ordered the tableside guacamole which was super neat; an employee rolled up and made the guac in front of us. We were able to customize its ingredients which was cool. The guac definitely tasted fresh. I got the steak frites as my entree, and it was the best steak I've had in a long, long time. It was cooked perfectly and was oozing with juices/flavor. Man it was just so good. The fries were also exactly how I liked them. It was an all-around perfect meal for me. Our waiter was also really nice. My only grievance was that once we had finished, it took nearly 20 minutes for us to find him/ask for our bill. Other than that, great service. Located in the historic La Fonda Hotel, this was just about the only place that was open during a recent snowstorm that shut down most of Santa Fe. The La Fonda and their lunch restaurant La Plazuela was a welcome break. It is worth the visit just to see all the woodwork and the artwork in this historic building. Wow- this restaurant is stunningly spectacular to look at and even more special to take a while to enjoy a relaxed and delicious lunch. ($21) The LIME COCONUT SOUP (Coconut Milk, Lime, Shredded Chicken, Micro Cilantro, Chile Oil) ($13) and SPIKED CUCUMBER LEMONADE ($15) were both excellent. The seasonal PINA COLADA cake was good. The STRAWBERRY GOAT CHEESE SALAD is my favorite salad anywhere. The combination of bitter organic Arugula, sweet Strawberries, savory Goat Cheese, and sour Apple Vinaigrette, with Candied Walnuts with Balsamic Reduction was perfect with a little cracked pepper. He not only steered me away from the entrée I originally wanted and made some fantastic recommendations, but he also went above and beyond by making us drinks that weren't even on the menu -- drinks the lobby bar had just told us they couldn't make! I'm so glad we listened to him because the Chilean sea bass and osso bucco were absolutely outstanding, some of the best we've ever had. Visited La Plazuela in mid-October right after the balloon festival with a large party of nine. We picked it on a whim while walking around the neighborhood, which was packed with tourists. The dining area is in a large atrium within the La Fonda hotel. A calming fountain sits in the center of the room, surrounded by two mid-size trees, stained glass windows, and various other classic Sante Fe-style architectural design elements. A stunning atmosphere, albeit in a very tourist setting. The wait staff was pretty attentive. I was impressed that they were able to sit a large party of nine with only about a ten-minute wait. The food was pretty good. My wife and I split the chicken enchiladas with green sauce and the French dip. Both were tasty. I preferred the enchiladas, my wife liked the French dip. I will say that it's not a great place for kids. Although there is a kids' menu, the items are overpriced and underwhelming--even by kids' meal standards. Overall a good meal, but next time I'm in Santa Fe I'll probably check out other options. read more
