I spent 17 years in New Mexico and was diligent about searching out the unique and absolutely delightful cuisine using red and green chile sourced exclusively from this state. While I was more than excited to see this menu just 11 miles away, my experience was 1. Nice ambiance as long as it is not cold out because the smallish interior is easily overwhelmed. 2. I realize a premium downtown Ojia property brings a big investment, but it ABSOLUTELY should not be at the expense of ridiculously SMALL portions for a realitivly large cash outlay. 3. Flavors are accurate but not nearly bold enough. That's why it is called "chile" in the first place. Was looking forward to a healthy Sunday small lunch with my close friend. And we sure did get small. The 2 tacos lunch was just that: 2 small street tacos. No sides and minimal toppings for $16. Yes that's right. $8 per tiny taco. The only choice of meat was shredded beef, shredded pork, shredded chicken. We had the beef and chicken. Very bland. However, the server did bring 2 bottles of Char Man sauce and some lime wedges for the tacos but for this price I was hoping for house made salsas. Oh and the food is served on disposable plates. I was stunned that such a charming restaurant in a great location did not serve food on pottery or at least melamine plates. The bar was fully stocked and the cocktail list was varied but with prices in the mid teens our lunch bill would have been $70 to $75 m, including tax and tip. We asked if we would be served complimentary chips and salsa as is the custom in all the Mexican restaurants I've eaten. Not at Tres Hermanas. Chips and salsa were an al la carte option for $5. Make sure you bring a credit card as they do it accept cash. Something about not having a place to store it? Perhaps a safe? Thought that was rather odd to not accept cash post Covid. Anyway... We won't be returning any time soon and do not recommend Tres Hermanas. read more

I have eaten at Tres Hermanas a few times before but today I have decided the food is pretty bad. The vegan pozole was very acidic not much hominy. The popular New Mexican food is made with oregano and not cilantro. It's a dish that is difficult to ruin. I ordered the dessert sopapilla as a side. Again hard to ruin. The bread was flat and lacked puffed and they charged $11. I was so happy when Tres Hermanas opened but I can make posole and sopapillas for a fraction of the cost and it would be delicious. I hope they get a new chef and start over. I believe this restaurant doesn't care and is more like a bar. I won't be back. Ever. read more

This is a must on your ojai list! As an Ojai native and we stopped in & couldn't be happier with our experience and to welcome this amazing addition to downtown Ojai. My partner loves a spicy margarita and often has to send her drinks back for more spice, outside of her crazy desire to drink liquid fire, it's often a great indicator of service. Not your average Mexican food place and I enjoyed it. Only negative is the staff isn't the friendliest. They made it clear we came at the end of a busy day which was not what we needed to hear. The staff is great, and the ambiance is lovely. That said, the food is really bad and the cocktails are really weak. The first time I went there, I ordered the chili. It was basically the vegan chili with a scoop of ground meat added on top. The vegan bean base had very little flavor, and the scoop of meat didn't add much more flavor or appeal. I've been there a handful of times, and I love how welcome everyone is. It's a great location for people-watching and is very close to everything downtown. I could buy chili at the market and get a bag of Fritos and save myself a whole heck of a lot of money! I would say the food is similar to grocery-store level organic-section canned food, but with farmer's-market level blue corn tortillas and produce. Out of several menu items upon opening, basic stuff that they could run down the block to the farmer's market and cook within 30 minutes of opening if they weren't so unprepared or could care less. To charge those prices for food you can get 1/3 of the price elsewhere and stick the food on those really tacky disposable plates is just annoying. We had the stew which was a soup really. A couple pieces of pork and a few potatoes. Very scimpy and the broth was ok.. not very complex. Also had a dish with roasted corn and squash and pintos that was ok but not anything I would come back for. The corn was barely cooked. Ok, the folks working here from our experience were so sweet and lovely... the food, bland, overpriced, and wayyyy too small of portions. Honestly we were confused and asked if we actually got what we ordered.. we did, and we were pretty disappointed and still hungry upon leaving (spent way too much to still be hungry). When asked how we were doing I asked why the food was served on single use plates, I received the answer that they are 'fallen fronds plates and are eco friendly, saving water'.. I respectfully disagree. These sorts of plates are falsely marketed as being eco.. yeah perhaps for a backyard party, instead of plastic, but for a restaurant serving many people everyday and fully capable of having dishes and a washer.. no. So silly honestly. I don't want to spend that kind of money and have my food soaking into the plate making it warp and wither. Y'all have gotten soooo much feedback on this. Don't ya think it's about time to listen to your customers? I want to love this spot, AND deer lodge.. but honestly.. ignoring so many customer requests is pretty ridiculous. The portion size is horrible... you have to ask for EVERYTHING. Ordered food and drinks (soda and beer) and the food came out before the drinks even arrived. We were almost done with our food and finally the waiter came by and we had to ask about our drinks. We also had to ask if they offered chips and salas, they said they now do... so like why do we have to ask for them if they are complimentary. They only give it to the people who ask.. oh yeah and they give you warm water... no ice... in 90+ degree weather like really? Had the posole and it's 6 dollars to add chicken. Like what? So the chicken is not even cooked into the soup it's literally scooped in. The food has no flavor, like at all... if I could give it a zero I would. No, a straight up "no". I gave them 2 stars just cause the physical layout was okay. Here it is, short and sweet: Lunch: we ordered the tacos - visually (and price frankly), a disaster, we felt like suckers. plate came with 2 tacos that included 2 blue tortillas and 2 fingers worth of mush meat. There was so little tomato etc. as to be symbolic only, utterly irrelevant visually and, worse, absolutely, tastewise, added nothing to the food or aesthetically. just looking at the plate made us feel like fools, gross. All in all very unappealing and really cheap on their part - $7 per taco. Friends ordered a dish that included a small bag of fritos, splayed open, with esstially, good old american chili on top - fast food is what it was and nothing more. suckers is how we felt when leaving. read more

I gave them a 3-star rating based on my perception of overall taste, quality, and value. To preface things, I grew up in New Mexico, by kids were born there, and I visit at least once a year (mainly to eat and get my "fix" from some of my favorite restaurants (if you know, you know)). I cook and prepare most of their menu items regularly using NM made base products sold here in SoCal (Bueno Red & Green Chile for example) and authentic recipes. So here's my take: The food is good, but overpriced and could benefit from someone who knows how most NM restaurants prepare and present their food. Rice and Beans on the side would be a start. Sopapillas should be served as a complement, with Honey on the table, not a $14 side with Honey all over it (the "Sopapilla" is basically Indian Fry Bread). Red sauce should not taste like a combination of perhaps red Chile & Chipotle BBQ sauce. The Carne Adovada tasted as if it were beef (a no no) and if it was pork, it was not lean enough IMO. The Queso was lacking in Green Chile and had a grainy consistency, which again is not really authentic. I'll reserve judgement on the Green Chile sauce, as they ran out the night we were there. The drinks were good, but a bit heavy on the mix, and forget the Tequila flight, it's basically one shot split among three tastes for $18. We joked that the bartender probably uses an eyedropper. The ambiance is quite nice, although on a cold night it might be an issue since there is little indoor seating. The staff is very good. So, all in all a decent, if overpriced, place. The food was good, but don't expect authentic New Mexican cuisine, but rather "New Mexico Inspired Food" as our waiter put it. read more

Comidas incompletas! My wife and I got super excited for this menu as it looks amazing but the execution and delivery left much to be desired including my still hungry belly. I ordered the green chile stew and it was pretty good but not great. The problem was that for $18 you would think I might at least get a couple tortillas served on the side or at least some garnish, let alone beans and rice. They just plopped down a very lonely small bowl of stew. My wife asked for hot salsa and while I do like our local Charman hot sauce it's essentially store bought jarred hot sauce. The restaurant has nice decor, theme, logo, ambiance, etc... It's a nice place! You would think they would at least put a little effort into having one signature salsa or house made hot sauce (fresh). The tacos were tasty, but overpriced without any side dishes.
