Very friendly proprietors, reasonably priced (nay, inexpensive!) good wines. It's a bit farther out Foxen Canyon Road than most of the other wineries there, but is worth the few extra minutes' drive. I hate to give a small winery a less than stellar review but I'm sorry to say that Tres Hermanas really left us less than impressed. The winery was cute from the exterior with a nice big porch. We were immediately greeted with the resident wine dog which was a great first impression! Inside we were greeted by a woman I felt was not having a great day. As we moved forward with our tasting she never really went into great detail about the winery. We had to really pull the information out. It just felt like we intruded on her weekend. The wines were different. If not a little funky. The only wine I truly liked was a butterscotch-like Chard. The reds were not for my palate, nor anyone in our group. We poured several of them out. The smell was like an old sock, and the flavor was next to nothing. Almost like the wines had been stored too hot perhaps? I am not certain. The tons of knick-knacks for sale was distracting and strange. It cheapened the winery in my opinion. I would likely not return to this winery unless friends were intent on it. read more

On an unsuspecting little bend in the road between Los Olivos and Santa Maria lies Tres Hermanas, which at first glance looks more like a ranch than a winery. You won't find the manicured, well-watered, golf-course-like lawn of a Fess Parker here, but that's probably a good thing in dry-as-a-bone California in the summer. Save the water for the grapes! :-D Of course I loved the Syrah, but you knew that. The rest of the wines were pretty much standard Santa Ynez Valley fare, which is to say excellent. I had been to a few tastings by the time I rolled around to Tres Hermanas, so maaaybe my judgement was a little impaired, but nothing truly stood out - just another excellent wine tasting in the valley. And the server was so friendly - I'm embarrassed to say I forgot her name - was a great host. It didn't hurt that I was the only one there at about 4pm on a Wednesday. We discovered this winery around the bend of the road bt accident back in 2011 and we have been a wime club member since and try to visit them often. The sisters greeted us every time by our names. Their tasting menu with quite a number of reds and whites and also whatever we asked was the most generous we have found. Their garden which they rent out for weddings and events is available for a quiet and peaceful picnic. We have brought friends here and have had wonderful picnics with wines we purchased from them (whites are chilled). We are very clean and never leave the place a mess. What a joyful way to spend some time and take a break. We love their sales which put their really good wines at such a bargain. We usually buy an extra case in addition to our wine club purchase. We loved the 2005 and 2006 sarah (one of them with sediment and tasted peppery). We still talk about these two wines with the owners and mourned that they are all gone. Their wide range of varietal was breathtaking and they are all really good. All these years i can only remember one or two that i tasted that i didn't care for. We moved further away but we come back as often as we could. It was always like comimg to see old friends. read more

South of Foxen vineyards and north of Zaca Mesa, Tres Hermanas is located near a bend in the road and is pretty hard to miss. The tasting room was spacious but had a lot of knick-knacky stuff for sale. They had a small rat terrier (similar to a Jack Russel) greeting people as they entered. The room had a very rustic/barn look. I was really expecting to find something interesting among the 6 wines we tasted, but alas, nothing really stood out; nothing really popped! So, we left without buying anything. This is probably not a place we'll revisit, but I don't regret giving it a try. read more

Best winery in the area. Paulette is wonderful and knows everything about this part of California, she is a native. This is a working ranch and 100% authentic and not owned by corporate interests like a lot of the "fancier" wineries in the area. This is the real thing, think "Bottleshock" , but for the 21st century! If you want authentic California wine, this is the place for you. Their Syrah, Sangiovese blends are my favorite, but their Muscats are a nice surprise. Tasting pours are generous, and if you join the wine club, free. Wine prices are so reasonable, we got 1/2 case of outstanding 06 Syrah for 8 bucks a bottle. The poor reviews on Yelp seem like the types who are easily impressed with the fancy-schmancy psuedo-European-styled tasting rooms. If getting lit with a bunch of girlfriends is your #1 reason for visiting this winery, they are right, you are better off going elsewhere. read more

Tres Hermanas Winery has perhaps most unappealing tasting room I've visited. It desperately needs a facelift and soon! Tthe server was friendly, but I wasn't too keen on their wines. They had mostly shiraz and chardonnay. Nothing really stood out. The shiraz wasn't as full-bodied as I'd hope. Tres Hermanas was the first winery we visited on our tour and I was a little disappointed. There are tons of wineries to choose from in the Santa Ynez valley. My verdict? Skip this one. read more

Not up to the standards of the Foxen Canyon trail. The wines are awful and the tasting room is kind of chintz kitsch. We had never been there before, but went for a wedding ceremony and reception. I will say that like all other Santa Ynez wineries, the setting is beautiful. The area that had originally been set up for the wedding was idyllic. Sadly it poured with rain that day and the wedding had to be held in the barn where the reception was set up. The barn was roomy and surprisingly warm considering how cold and blustery it was outside. As an event site, I'd say it meets local standards. As a winery, not so much. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Get a new master wine maker and update your tasting room and you've got yourself another Santa Ynez winner. This was our last stop on our long drunken day of tasting in the area. We really only stopped here because our designated driver needed the bathroom. But, I'm so glad we did. This was the best winery we visited in the area. It's a small, family-owned place, which was a nice contrast to the huge places we visited earlier in the day. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and had a great sense of humor. I fell in love with the Dos Blanc, a mix of Chenin Blanc and Savignon Blanc and wanted to guzzle the whole bottle. If I weren't prohibited by the price, I would have bought much more of it. The reds were also quite good and, in the end, we left with half a case and a membership to the wine club. read more

Tres Hermanas was a convenient stop on Foxen Canyon Rd, so I decided to pop in and see how their wines were. Let me start with the tasting room itself. The place is cluttered with a wide variety of cheap knick-knacks for sale. Some winery tasting rooms have a small section for selling various items (usually olive oil, jams, wine openers, etc), but Tres Hermanas was absolutely packed with this stuff. The nail in the coffin for me was the children's mechanical ride in the middle of the tasting room; very distracting, completely inappropriate. The wine itself was very bland, especially considering other offerings in the area. Nothing stood out to me, and I did not buy anything. The ladies working in the tasting room looked bored, answering guests with simple one or two word responses, never smiling or making an effort to make people feel welcome. While nothing inherently bad happened during my time there (hence the two stars instead of one), I have no reason to come back. read more

This isn't high end but I'd say it's a good place to stop in if you aren't looking for anything high caliber and don't want to spend a lot. This is a great little winery along the Foxen Canyon trail. If you want a winery where the owners pour and you can actually talk about winemaking and the whole experience you get it here. There are a lot of wineries in the area so to compare one to the other just shows ones lack of knowledge of wine in general. As far as the service? They have always been friendly to us but I can certainly understand how a crappy attitude from your pourer can ruin the experience...been there done that. Tres Hermanas does not make super jammy Central Coast wines but rather produces numerous wines in a more European style...lower in alcohol, higher in acid and basically more food friendly. I will have to say I enjoy 90% of what they produce. Their Tres Hermanas Cuvee is incredible as is there Nebbiolo, Refosco, Syrah/Sangiovese blend and Muscat Cannelli. Not every winery is for everyone and I personally can do without the chachki's but I am there for the wine and it is worth a stop along the trail. read more

A cool little place. Had a lot of fun shop talking to Paulette. Lots of Italian varietals to choose from if you a Red person. In general, the list is huge. There is a ton of wine to taste here. So chose wisely. The GF was in heaven with the sweets stuff. She was in love with all the sweets. The '09 Malvasia Bianca Muscat Canelli, '10 and the '11 Her fav was the Cuvee Haliegh, a blend of 65% Riesling, 35% Gewurztraminer. From the Whites, I tasted the Cuvee Sadie, 60% Vionier, 40% Chardonnay. Interesting feel for that one. Yup, I'm trying to like Cali Chards. AS for the Reds, I was in heaven myself, it was just hard to choose which ones I wanted to try. I did notice a Refosco, a varietal I was not familiar with. Had to taste that one. It was incredible. I love discovering new grapes and this one was a stand out. Walked out with this one. A major plus for us and we will revisit. read more

This place is really nice, the tasting room is a good size to probably hold about 50 people at a time, and they have one table and a counter for tasting wine. I say 50 for the whole store/tasting room area. The staff is very helpful of course and they tell you everything you would like to know about the wine you are about to taste and its origin. Actually got to meet the wine maker himself and he signed a few of our bottles, not sure if that was a good idea since once the wine bottle is empty, who will save the bottle? The place has a very country feel, humble and quiet... Don't judge a book by its cover. Sure the tasting room is rustic and not as fancy as others, but you're there for the wine, right? We arrived before a couple of large groups came. I credit the lady behind the counter for managing everyone's tastings. There was a lot to taste, so we opted for two tastings of 5 wines each -- one combination of whites and reds, one all red. We were able to trade out whichever on the list we wanted. We loved the Refosco, a varietal we were told is not commonly grown in California. They were planning to have a convention of sorts with all the wineries that made Refosco, an event they were very excited about. The 2008 was what we tasted, but the lady offered us a extra tasting of the 2009 that was not listed. We LOVED the 2009. When asked why there was a difference between the two, we did not get the canned, "There are so many variables." Instead, the winemaker explained that she thought that the big difference was the rainfall between the two years. I certainly was happy with my experience at Tres Hermanas. There is quite a variety of wines which I think is a bit overwhelming and seems overkill to me but we settled on some delicious syrahs. What's best however is a bunch of the wines were for sale as they were trying to unload inventory and we were able to get a bunch of the syrahs for ~$10/bottle. Worst winery I have ever been too. In my entire life. The place is musty. But let's focus on the wine since that's the biggest disappointment. We got 2 mixed tastings and on the fourth I just couldn't drink it anymore. The wine smelled bad, had a horrible taste to it, before and after taste. I told her it was bad and I just couldn't drink it and she offered to switch it to something else. My boyfriend will drink anything and he just could even handle it. And the pouring were so skimpy. Which would generally be a bad thing but since the wines were so bad I just wanted to get it over with. read more

I noticed this relatively new winery between Zaca Mesa and Foxen and was interested to give it a try, especially when I heard they had a Refosco. This was by far the most enjoyable winery of my most recent trip, thanks especially to the friendly service. We were fortunate enough to be the only people in the tasting room. Our pourer was exceptionally knowledgeable, personable, and generous. She pulled out every single one of their wines, so we got to try much more than what was on the tasting sheet. We were also able to do several vertical tastings: the 2005, 2006, and 2007 roses, and the 2003, 2004, and 2005 syrahs. We learned a great deal about the history of the vineyard as well as the local area in general. Our pourer also used brilliant descriptors, really nailing it on the head when we were stumped for the right words to describe what we were tasting. Apparently the winemaker is usually on site, but since he was out this particular day, he had signed many of the wine bottles in an effort to leave a personal touch. The wines were fairly decent, though none of them blew me away; I especially enjoyed the Refosco, the Syrah-Sangiovese, and the 2004 Syrah. I would certainly come again, if not for the wine then for the friendly, family-owned, non-corporate vibe of the tasting room, which is a pleasant contrast to many of the other wineries on the trail. Terrible, terrible wine. Poor customer serivce. An all around avoidable place. The pretty view of the area is the only redeaming value of stopping by. Other than that.... ugh. A group of friends and I stopped by here when we were doing some wine tasting in the area. Coming from Cotton Wood Canyon to Tres Hermanas was like night and day. The place was packed with people who were looking to get drunk, not actually taste the wine. Guess who the pourers were paying more attention to? While I patiently stood at the bar to get my next pour, drunk know nothings squeezed their arms through like children asking for more soda. It was disgusting. Any questions I asked from the pourer were met with confused looks. It seemed as though they were not very knowledgable at all. I understand that the place is still fairly new, and perhaps that's why the customer service wasn't all that great. But that really shouldn't matter. It's a winery I will not be going back to. The owner was doing the pouring in the tasting room which always is a good thing cuz the owners tend to be friendlier and more knowledgeable when you have questions. We opted for the food pairing and the Syrah Rose with strawberries and cream were beyond what baby seals are made of. The 05's are much smoother and crisper compared to the 06's and we bought a few bottles. This is by far the worst winery that we (the girlfriend and I) have been to in our several wine tours in the Solvang area. Let me begin with the positive part of this winery. It has one of those penny horse rides you found outside of grocery stores as a child. You can sit on it and take hilarious pictures, but that is where the fun stops. The negatives at this winery are hard to count. We had a very similar experience to Angeleno - except we were with a group. I have not met a less friendly group of hostesses at any winery anywhere. Not only were they EXTREMELY stingy and strict with the tasting, but they definitely seemed to want you to go away... as quickly as possible. On top of that, much like Angeleno, we found the wine to be sub-par at best. You get dragged to a lot of iffy wineries on these wine tours and this was definitely one we made a mental note to not return to... we even kept the glasses to remind us of the name of the winery! Actually, we went to this winery 9 months ago and just now wrote this review to warn others of how bad it was! The final and most disgusting blow was the bathroom. Our group had a lunch at this winery and the restrooms were FOUL. It was so bad that it was a running joke within the group, but it was not funny while you were in there. Survival was based on how long you could hold your breath. If the wine didn't leave you with a bad taste in your mouth, that certainly did. read more

I wish I had read these reviews before going. The woman who assisted us was cold and barely interested in talking about the wine or how it was made. I'm giving this winery no stars. We were charged $10 tasting fee - which would be fine except it doesn't indicate anywhere that there is a fee. Usually this might be found on the tasting menu or behind the counter - nothing. When we brought this up, she answered loud enough for other customers to hear (and in a very condescending tone) that this was the common fee in the area. It was quite offensive in tone. On top of that, we did purchase a bottle of rose which was rancid when we opened it on Thanksgiving. read more

The good: the woman pouring wine in our late November visit was warm and knowledgeable. The bad: unmitigated gall in not waiving tasting fee with a purchase. I've tasted in many places in California, Oregon, Washington, Ohio, even Texas of all places, and have routinely had tasting fee waived with a purchase. My Foxen Trail winery brochure shows four wineries that don't follow this policy. I will patronize and taste with them. The wine: OK but in my opinion, no better than that and generally not worth the price they ask. The bottom line: check first to see if they continue to waive fees, then patronize Cambria, Curtis, Koehler, or Riverbench instead of this one or any of the others with no fee waiver. read more
