It was incredibly difficult to tell my dad that I could no longer manage his growing caregiving needs, but Merife and Michelle made the transition easier by assisting me when I shared the news at his home, where he had lived for 60 years. Our first lunch at Villa Fontana was nothing short of serendipitous--my dad was reunited with a former co-worker he hadn't seen in decades! The meal was so delicious that he kept saying "oishi" (Japanese for "delicious"). It truly felt like a home-cooked meal, starting with a cream of potato soup, followed by a bountiful salad with hardboiled eggs, olives, and more. The main course featured chicken parmesan, spaghetti, perfectly prepared vegetables, and a berry pie à la mode for dessert. My dad's room is bright and cheerful, overlooking a gorgeous courtyard. It was recently remodeled with new carpet and granite countertops, making it feel fresh and inviting. To help ease his transition, Merife arranged 24/7 caregiving services from Harmony for the first three days--an unexpected but deeply appreciated gesture. Each caregiver was kind, attentive, and communicative with me, which made all the difference. Just 3 days after moving in, my dad had a small accident during the night, falling on the bathroom floor. Thankfully, he wasn't harmed, and the staff immediately provided me with pictures to reassure me that he was okay. Their attentiveness and quick response gave me so much peace of mind. Perhaps the biggest change has been in my dad's daily routine. Before moving in, he spent his days watching TV from morning until night. Now, he participates in group morning exercises, and when I asked what he liked the most about Villa Fontana, he replied, Bingo! He also loves that he can enjoy ice cream every day--a small but meaningful joy. The entire staff at Villa Fontana has been incredibly friendly and kind. In addition to Merife and Michelle, I want to give a special shoutout to Jefferson, who always greets me at the front desk with a smile, as well as Allyssa, Maryann (the activity director), Maryann (the med tech), Manny, Marycris, and Roselily. I know I'm still learning everyone's names, so my apologies if I've left anyone out! Villa Fontana has truly exceeded my expectations, and I'm so grateful my dad is in such a caring and supportive environment. Toured Atria Willow Glen as a potential independent living community for my mother. They also have…read moreassisted living and memory care, should she need it. Atria is a gorgeous place with huge trees, gardens, koi pond, and creek. The person who gave us the tour was the memory care director. She was very warm and knowledgeable and genuinely interested in getting to know my mom and her current living/health situation. The dining room is clean and spacious and there was a friendly warmth from the staff and residents. I was pleased to find out in addition to three meals a day, they serve coffee and breakfast all day until 5pm. When a resident is sick or just doesn't feel like going to the dining room, they can have food delivered to their apartment. There is also the option of cooking in the small kitchen in their apartment. Atria has lots of activities and events for residents. They go to interesting places like San Francisco, Monterey, etc. There are groups to join, too, like a knitting or writing group. Garden plots are available in the community garden and there is a heated outdoor swimming pool. My mom loved the apartment she was shown. Since this was the first community she looked at, we are going to tour a few more before making a decision. It's hard to imagine a nicer place.

However, I find it very unsafe to not have personnel on site monitoring their movements in the shopping plaza. I just encountered a resident who forgot where she needed to meet for pickup. I give credit to how quickly they arrived, but even the man who answered the phone seemed rude and lacked compassion. I worry because the Almaden plaza usually draws homeless as well as thieves. God forbid they lose their memory at the wrong time. I hope this is an issue with rapid resolve for the sake of others' elderly loved ones.

My brother and I had looked at a number of possible assisted living facilities and Golden Heritage was my first choice. It is relatively close by to where I live and work, has an Asian staff with many speaking Mandarin (as well as I believe Catonese). There are also some Japanese and possibly some Korean residents as well. We had also considered Aegis Gardens in Fremont, but it was further away and higher cost. The place is independently owned and run by a very nice family with experience in running health care facilities. The place also felt less "corporate." The facilities were converted from a "European" style hotel - with each of the resident floors having a big common space - so it doesn't look like a typical assisted living facility or hotel. The place is clean and the staff is friendly. It took a few months for my mom to adjust living there, but she's come to enjoy living there. My mom enjoys the activities including simple daily exercises, some crafts, weekly outings to pick up small groceries (like fruit for small fridge in room) and household items, and bingo. And, often on the weekends there are small performances by local groups like youth or senior church groups I think. There is free wifi and my mom regularly streams videos from her iPad which I understand is common. Having just broken her hip my mom started off in the assisted living floor of Golden Heritage, but a few months after transitioned to an independent living floor which helped keep the costs down. Despite being in independent living they do check in on her and have called my brother or I when they have noticed problems such as falls or strange behavior; we monitored more carefully and eventually had a medical issue taken care of. It definitely gives me piece of mind knowing that she's being watched over. All in all I'm very satisfied with Golden Heritage. I think if you're looking into senior facilities for you elderly loved one you should definitely check out multiple places as they will each feel a little different to you. I wouldn't state that Golden Heritage is for everyone, but it's been working very well for my mom.

UPDATE ON MY DAD My…read moredad is STILL in the hospital after being discharged from The Terraces because they determined he was "sufficiently better." The reality? He couldn't even walk. We were told that Medicare requires a patient to be able to walk 21 steps before being discharged from rehab. Yet my dad was sent home when he was not even capable of walking safely. Now he is in the hospital at El Camino Hospital, one of the best hospitals in the area, and we have learned that he has E. coli--an infection he has dealt with before and that we had specifically asked The Terraces to test him for two weeks ago. I cannot understand how this happened. We trusted a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility to care for an elderly man who was vulnerable and unable to advocate for himself. Instead, I feel that his condition was seriously underestimated, and I am extremely concerned that he was discharged before it was safe for him to leave. I am filing a formal complaint with Medicare and the appropriate regulatory agencies and will be requesting his complete medical and therapy records. This is not just about my dad. This is about how we treat our elderly and most vulnerable people. Families should not have to fight this hard to make sure their loved ones are safe, properly evaluated, and receiving the care they deserve. What has happened is absolutely heartbreaking and, in my opinion, completely unacceptable.

They give family members two free meals a month, which is a brilliant way to promote family & friends visiting. My brother seems to enjoy inviting me to join him in meals. Often when l get there his tv isn't functioning and he is sitting in a snarl of his sheets. Pedro in maintenance is very nice and helpful when I visit if l ask. Mary, the evening supervisor was extremely prompt and efficient last when there was a hygiene issue. However I have had a request in for them to replace a doorstop for months, the one he has is broken and has punched a hole in the wall, which later allowed the knob to punch a hole as well. The door hinge is out of adjustment, causing the door to slam loudly. These things that take a little bit more work are just not getting done. Transportation to medical appointments is efficient and timely. I wish I could say the same for things he would like to attend like a luncheon out.

We visited several places, however Marbella ISL stood out above the others. The sales associates welcomed our multiple visits and answered our questions. We noticed a welcoming atmosphere with each visit. Marbella was the only senior community where we observed staff members engaging residents in a cheerful, respectful and caring manner; staff spoke of residents as "family". Mom is delighted with her decision to move into an Independent Living apartment at Marbella. As a family, we are delighted that she can "age in place" at Marbella, who also offer Assisted Living and Memory Care services. Mom has made many new friends and enjoys her conversations with them in the dining room (She enjoys the appetizing dishes to select from). Mom participates in a wide variety of daily activities offered at Marbella. We are pleased to see her actively investing in her health and regularly attending fitness classes led by instructor Cyrus T., who motivates residents through his encouragement and humor! Our family frequently visits Mom at Marbella and staff members always welcome us to participate in activities and events with her. Mom feels at home!

We were all either born there or had lived there for a long period, such fun. It's so easy to do things like that. I plan a big party for my birthday, and reserving tables for any occasion is just done online. Imagine, a place where dozens of geriatric grandmas and grandpas are still enjoying life. The worst rehabilitation facility I have ever experienced…read more The staff seem to work together against you rather than with you, and I rarely receive clear answers when something happens. At times, it feels as though they are trying to hide what is really going on instead of being transparent with the family. This facility has gone seriously downhill, and I feel terrible for anyone who has to depend on it for their recovery. The physical therapy has been inconsistent and, in my opinion, inadequate. My mother walked into this facility and is leaving in a wheelchair, no longer able to walk. That is extremely concerning and heartbreaking for our family. Families should be able to trust that their loved ones are receiving consistent, appropriate care and rehabilitation. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience here.

Not knowing the first thing about these facilities, I reached out to Alan Brauner at Senior Seasons. I can't even begin to explain how helpful he was. He listened to our situation, provided me with insight and contact information on the local facilities, explained what I needed to know, and what to consider when reaching out to these prospective places. His advice was invaluable. He was always there for me, whenever I had questions. He was super responsive, emailing back or calling right away. And through this process my mom kept changing her mind about where she wanted to live (mid-peninsula near her friends, south bay near me), and so our requirements kept changing. Through it all Alan was patient and positive - something I really needed during this stressful time. I seriously have no idea how I would have handled this whole situation without him.
