Called dealer. Was told "they forgot to smog the vehicle" to get it registered. Major DMV violation. Vehicle is now in Phoenix and after $1,270.00 in repairs, we learned the vehicle has major emission problems and will not smog or make it back to California. Now what do we do. As of this time & date, we have a vehicle with major mechanical issues that we do not legally own even after paying $3,500.00 CASH!!! The dealers is delaying, wanting to "make payments" to us. After a quick test drive around the block, just my husband and I (we kept it low-key because this was our moment), we took a closer look. This thing was 2013, but looked like it was born yesterday--shiny, sleek, and had this mysterious diesel engine. Did I know what a TGI engine was? Nope. Did I care? Also nope. It was one of two in the U.S. and the other one was in Florida. So basically, if I didn't buy it, who knows what might happen? It could get swept away by a hurricane and I'd never forgive myself. The car didn't start right away (which was a bit of a "hello?!" moment), but I figured it was just being dramatic. Maybe it was like me after a long nap--just needed some time to wake up. Sam was super chill about it, though, and even credited us for a new battery and an oil change. It was like he was paying me to take it home. Fast forward to 4:30 p.m. and I'm cruising down the road in my new baby blue Beetle, top down, wind in my hair, feeling 16 again. It was like I was on a high-speed chase... except I wasn't being chased, and the speed limit was involved.
