What an incredible spot for great quality ingredients without the frills. I dropped in with a friend for lunch and was immediately greeted by a smiling an behind the counter. He took the time to explain the menu and offered to mix and match if we couldn't decide. The food is clearly prepared with high-quality ingredients, the tomatoes and mozzarella had great flavor and you could tell time and effort has been spent sourcing ingredients. It's a casual spot with plenty of seating but friendly, authentic service that feels like a real family run business. It's also surprisingly affordable given the location and quality. Since the pandemic began, a lot of North Beach restaurants started betting big on takeout. While this definitely increased options, often times it essentially means the dine-in menu is now put in a box. Which translates to smaller portions and higher prices. Meanwhile, this joint is North Beach adjacent and was takeout focused before the pandemic. That means you get really large portions for a reasonable price. Not quite at the same level as some of the fancy Italian joints, but still very tasty in a comforting way. Rosso Calzone: This was HUGE! The large was basically like a large pizza folded and half. And there was no shortage of filling. A generous amount of ricotta and mozzarella. Also, a pretty good dose of prosciutto. The were a bunch of fresh diced tomatoes inside too. Wasn't a fan of those since they tasted raw/undercooked; might have been better to use stewed tomato chunks instead. Not sure if it's standard, but I made sure to ask that marinara sauce was included. Great for dipping, especially the edge pieces which had more dough. Beef Lasagna: Pure comfort. Thick layers of pasta, lots of cheese and lots of ground beef. I realize a lot of fancy places are into the thin pasta layers, but I always feel cheated on filling with those thin layers. So this more traditional home style with thick pasta and thickly filling was more my speed. read more

Oh Tricolore! How have I not found out about you sooner?!?!? I found Tricolore while browsing through my Ritual app today while looking for a new lunch place to try out, and the menu items looked pretty tempting. While the pizza and pasta items sure sounded tempting, I figured it would not be such a good idea to pass out from a food coma in the middle of work. So I tempered my rumbling tummy, and opted for the Salmone panini instead. At first, I thought a half panini looked rather small from the Yelp pictures, so I opted for the full instead. Little did I know when I got back to the office that each half panini was actually pretty decently sized, so a full panini made QUITE the meal! The salmone panini consisted of smoked salmon, mascarpone cheese, and slices of lettuce, all inside the most beautiful, perfectly toasted, soft yet crispy panini bread I have ever tasted! And even at $11 (markup through the app), it was definitely still well worth it and a great value for the cost. Service was pretty friendly, and they made sure to greet me even though I was just doing a quick pickup. Would definitely come back and will definitely be recommending this place to all of my friends and coworkers! read more

New to the San Francisco area, so I walk the streets looking for a place to have some lunch. I came across this small café, I decided to give it a try. After a few moments of staring blankly at the menu, the gentleman behind the counter asked if he could assist me. I told him I did not know what kind of pasta I wanted, and he suggested I choose 2. I told him I would try the lasagna and tortellini. I expected to pay a little more, but was nicely surprised to find it I was charged the regular rate for one dish. While the tortellini was good, the lasagna was outstanding. It was loaded with different types of cheese, and the sauce was very flavorful. To cap things off, the staff was great. The young woman who was working the cashier didn't stop smiling the entire time I was there. A good experience for my first lunch in San Francisco! read more

Great little cafe with soups (usually vegan), sandwiches and salads, as well as pizza by the slice and fresh made pasta. The prices vary wildly with really awesomely cheap for the soups, salads and sandwiches, to being a bit on the hefty side for the pasta (at least for lunch). We like to come here at least once a week (or more!) during the work week and it can get pretty busy. Not a lot of seating since it's small but it's great for picking up to eat outside or at your desk. The guys that work behind the counter are also awesome and are always cheerful and happy to serve. I love this place I will eat here almost every day for lunch when I'm in my office. I love the Mediterranean and Cesear salad combo with Pelleogrio water the most because of the health benefits for me personally. It comes with bread and I love it. What a cute little Italian deli! I've had this place bookmarked for some time now, and finally checked it out on a rainy lunch break. We popped in for a quick lunch. Luckily for us the rush hadn't started yet (around 11:30 am or so). We were able to walk right up to the counter and order. Our food was ready in about a 3-5 minute wait. The nice thing about a quick lunch here is the combo options. Customers can pair salads, pizza slices, painis, and soup to accommodate a unique lunch. I went with a salad and a slice of cheese pizza. My coworker ordered a panini and a salad. The pizza slice was ok- not the best I've had (I'm sooooo loyal to Tony's!) and the salad was fresh and delicious. The panini was a generous size. One of the best pizza places I've ever been to. When the office wanted pizza we went here. It is only one - two blocks away and always super crowded. The workers are so nice and friendly especially if they remember you! The pizza is amazing, I honestly always grab two slices for myself. Sometimes, I wish I grab a third slice. I brought the office team over for a Friday lunch. Arriving at 12:00, the line was still short and tables available. By 12:15, the line was to the door. So my advice is to try to go early. The staff is very friendly. We all ordered something different. I think the best looking dish was the pasta with chicken and mushrooms and a cream sauce. The Vegetarian Lasagna was approved by the vegetarian in the group! I had the Penne Bolognese. The sauce was not as flavorful as I expected and I needed to add some pepper flakes to spice it up. The portions were a good size. A couple of people in our group couldn't finish their plates. Overall rating 4 stars. 3 1/2 for the food and 4 1/2 for the ambience. The décor, music, and friendly staff make this someplace I would return to. I will try the pizza next time. read more

I've been to Tricolore Caffe & Catering a couple of times while visiting a customer nearby. Tricolore is your standard Italian restaurant with pizza, panini and a couple of pasta entrees. It has an online ordering link on their website that is a convenient option for ordering. During my first visit I got a slice of pizza and half panini combo ($8.95) to-go and went for the chicken pizza and salmon panini. This is another restaurant in FiDi that has not signs for picking up online orders. Anyway the line starts from the left for ordering with the pay station to the right. For on-line orders you can directly head to the pay station which makes others waiting in line feel that you are cutting in line. A little more organization is warranted. During the first visit they were very busy so I had to wait another 10 minute to get my order. The short review would be that the pizza and panini are both average at best. The pizza has a little too much oil which literally drips out of the foil and on to the paper bag. It is like a regular chain store bought pizza with a thick crust. The panini on the other hand was not heated (or toasted) even though I had asked for it to be while ordering. I was also not a very big fan of the bread that was used. It was tough and crumbly. I decided to give them one more try. This time I got the Pesto pizza slice and chicken panini. This time they were not very busy and my order was ready when I reached about 20 minutes after ordering. Again the experience was the same. Oily pizza, dry bread for the panini. Pricewise this is about 30% cheaper than other lunch places in FiDi, but the quality shows in the food. If I'm around I'll stop by but Tricolore is not a candidate for my lunch rotation. read more
