Worst haircut I have received in my life was from Johnny the owner. At a basic level, he couldn't have been less excited to be there and made that very clear. However the real issue was with the cut. For some reason, he only cut the sides of my hair, jagged, uneven, and poorly. During the cut I was going to make a joke about the several old dried blood stains on his barber cape, but when I got home I saw that too had been victim of his butchering and my blood was dripping. I do not have any bumps or acne that he cut by accident, it was strictly just his razor in to skin. The red irritation was all his haphazard prowess. Another review mentioned him stumbling and being visibly intoxicated and I believe it. The entire time he was either watching the tv or stumbling back and forth. Did not cut the top of my hair despite my request, which is probably for the better. He "finished" in all of 10 minutes. $46 later, I could not recommend him or this place less. read more

I've lived in Hell's Kitchen for years and just moved a block from your shop. There are FOUR barbers between my apartment and your shop. Silly me for going the extra distance today. The first time I went in, the guy in the second chair was pleasant and took care of details. Today, in the owner's chair,I never felt like I was taking up someone's time as I did today. I don't need or want a conversation, but barely a greeting and I don't recall a thank you at the end. $40 for a cut/buzz and didn't start with a small area for me to confirm. No shave close to my ears. Just did the spray and the hot towel dropped on my head. Then no mirror for me to see everything before I got out of the chair. To which I had to fix my own shirt collar. That 20% tip wasn't earned. The one star is only earned for my first visit. read more

Johnny is THE BEST in Hells Kitchen. Hands down! I had been bouncing around from barbershop to barbershop never getting a good cut, unable able to convey what I wanted and never truly feeling comfortable with the barber. That is until I landed in Johnny's chair 5 years ago. Since then I have seen only him and was extremely happy for him when he opened his own shop. It also happens to be the best looking barbershop on 9th Avenue! Johnny is a great listener and will know exactly what you want. He will make you feel comfortable and relaxed and talk you through something that might not be the best idea. At this point I never really have to say what I want, he just knows. Hes also a great listener and conversationalist. As someone who loves to talk this is probably why we hit it off and I kept coming back. You can make an appt online via instagram so gone are the days of having to sit and wait for an opening! Cuts are extremely reasonably priced considering the quality of his work ($25 for a cut). Lastly, as a barbershop run by a straight man, they are probably the biggest supporter of the LGBTQ community in the neighborhood which can be attested to by his huge gay following which says a lot of about him as an artist and an individual! read more

I've been going to this barbershop for half a year and I'll start with the headline: Johnny gives a really good cut and a fun guy to talk to. He gives attention to detail, asks questions to ensure what he's doing is what he wants, and able to take direction if you feel you want something different. Second point: I'm a gay Asian male and have always found him not only professional, but an LGBT ally. I was referred to him by my gay friends who equally like him. He is always interested in how my husband is doing and he tries to understand gay culture both out of curiosity and just because he feels it's interesting. He's straight - And it's pretty apparent when we talk about our lives that he is. Yet, he has told me stories of how proud he was when he stood up to someone who was homophobic - and he should be proud because taking money from gays is one thing, putting your neck out to defend minorities is another. He also made me feel at ease the first time I got my hair cut telling me how shameful the current administration is to immigrants and LGBT people in order to let me know I can just be myself. This was the weirdest hair cut experience I've ever had.... The barber I requested Johnny (the owner) that was recommended through a friend was odd... I think this dude was on "one". At first I thought it was because this dude was eccentric and overwhelmed, it was busy after all. However this dude could not focus! He kept pausing and looking out the window, he would stop and step outside a few times in the middle of my cut, then after a few minutes of trimming he would stop again to close the blinds. Come back and worked a few jagged strokes. His hair shaving technique felt uncoordinated, he was using a weird swiping motion on my hairline (think of ripping a band aid off quickly but with electric clippers). It was effing weird. At one point he fidgeted and dropped his comb right before trimming the top of my head which was modest. I had to close my eyes I was like terrified at this point. The barber next to him was jokingly condescending my barber Johnny in Spanish to his client that made me laugh but made me realize "damn even this guy thinks he's boss is a joke". I felt like I was already in too deep. I basically let my expectations go. I don't know what the "blank" was up with johnny but he was so uncomfortably tense and uncoordinated. He didn't use shaving cream when lining me up and basically half assed it. He cut me while lining me up. Johnny didn't even see the blood until I pointed it out after he asked me if I had ever came in before because I looked familiar and questioned me. This dude made me feel so uncomfortable at this point that I almost wanted to jokingly say "Do you watch gay porn maybe that's why I might look familiar." I let him trim my eye brow line to the bare minimum. I really needed it but I made sure to look at a mirror so he wouldn't fuck it up. Oh I did get treated to the weirdest half assed pseudo spa treatment where he grabbed a warm moist towel and tossed it on top of my head for a minute. Didn't massage clean wipe nothing. No joke he just had it tossed on top of my head covering part of my face.... why? To hide my embarrassing experience and cut.... Ok Johnny I understand now, you were right to do that. In the end I paid and I tipped Johnny $5, I felt bad for Johnny. Like my hair will grow back but idk about Johnnys barbering skills. Like use the 5 to buy a Prozac or addy so you can chill and/or focus. read more

Hands down best barber in town. I'm from Miami and moved to NYC about a year ago. I never knew how hard it was to find a good barber that didn't jump around until I found Trimmed HK. At first I did not what to expect, but when I sat down and got my haircut/beard done, I knew I found the right place. I am not difficult at all, I only want my cut and beard to look good. That wasn't hard to do, as Johny expertise is in beard and making you look good & feel good. Love everything about this establishment. My two dogs love coming in with me. These guys give good haircuts. I'll give them that, which is why I can't give them one star. It's everything else that's pretty problematic. An asian guy further up the comments said he had a bad haircut from them. Maybe that's because they're racist. I brought in pictures of the hairstyle that I wanted. Two out of the three models in the pictures I had were asian. My hair is bone straight, and I think asian fashion is often on the forefront of style trends, and that's honestly just what I wanted my hair to look like. Midway through the cut the barber (the owner) asks me if I want to be asian and uses racist language. I was furious, but I had to let him finish my cut. I'd also spent the first half of the cut staring at his "Official Seal of the Pussygrabber in chief" sticker and a comic sticker of Donald Trump hulking out of his clothes. Don't be fooled by the "LGBTQ friendly" yelp designation. Just because a business is in Hells Kitchen and they're willing to make money off of gay people does not in any way make them LGBTQ friendly. You couldn't make me go back there if you paid me and if supporting LGBTQ friendly businesses in a gayborhood is important to you, I wouldn't either. In response to your comment, if you're actually interested in a dialogue, I'd be happy to discuss why I think the terminology you used was not just inappropriate, but racist. I'm also happy to explain why I think it's inappropriate for a business that claims to be LGBTQ friendly would openly support a politician who is actively working to dismantle my community's rights as citizens, a community you claim to support. I'm not trying to run anybody out of business, but I am trying to protect my community from unprincipled businesses that profit off of them and support them only as long as it keeps paying the rent. read more

The team has a super positive attitude but they do not know how to cut asian hair. The person didn't know how to blend my hair and the whole haircut was a total disaster. Overall it was uneven, and I had to go to another place to fix it the next day. I had a traditional slick back look and now it is going to take me 6 months to grow my hair back to that length before it got ruined. This was the worst haircut and worst experience getting a haircut I've ever had. Where do I begin. I went to the barber closest to the window. Tall gentleman with a goatee. I sat down and explained to the barber what I wanted and showed him some reference photos. It was a simple cut. A skin fade and a little off the top with some texture. He seemed pretty confident about doing it. He went in on the right side of my head and then switched off the the left. The back to the right and then stopped. I thought something was wrong. But he was just staring out of the window. He seemed very distracted. And he kept doing this for the entirety of the haircut. He would do three strokes with the clippers and then stop, stare out of window for about 10-30 seconds and then touch the back of my head then jump to another side of my head and then repeat that pattern over and over again for almost an hour while randomly opening and closing the blinds. It was very strange. Then he started doing this weird flicking motion when shaping up the sides with the clipper. Then he took a big piece of my right eyebrow off while doing this weird flicking motion. He then proceeded to hack at the top of my head with texturizing sheers. It looked crazy. So I just told him to cut it all off. And he still messed that up. The left side of my head was 1 1/2 inches long and the right side was a half inch. The fade on the left side of my head so so unblended there was a harsh line with where he separated the hair. And he seemed confused as to how to fix it. I came in with alot of hair and I ended up with no hair at all. I had to shave it all off that night. And I still had to pay. He gave me a $10 discount for shaving a chunk of my eyebrow off. I wasn't going to argue with him because he seemed a little off and was combative even when I asked him to fix the fade. This whole experience was just strange and upsetting. I'm not going to assume his state of mind but even the other barber was giving him a weird look while he was doing my haircut. I hope he is not the owner of the shop. Whoever the owner is needs to have a serious conversation with him because that was not ok. I would think that you'd have to be a really exceptional barber to work in an area like Hell's Kitchen and charge $40 minimum for a cut. I work in the beauty industry and if I ever conducted myself in this manner I would be fired or not be paid. Go there at your own risk but never go to that barber. I wish I could have recorded this. Something like this would have went viral. It felt like I was being pranked. It was unbelievable. read more
