I think it's time to get off this rollercoaster. This place used to be good, then it got bad, then it got better. Last night it was awful. We're done. Our dinner last night was disappointing, and it was the worst of the many we've had here. The service was slow. The food was tasteless. We had to delay our departure while they corrected our check. The details are below. Maybe the first clue was when a waiter dropped a butter-coated knife on my back right after I sat down. That would have been a good time to cut our losses, but we persevered. , and it was the worst of We sat for a while before anyone came by to take our drink and appetizer orders. 15 minutes after that, our drinks and four slices of bread arrived. My Trio Manhattan tasted pretty good. (Hold that thought.) 15 minutes after that, the manager stopped by and told us that they had sold the last of the appetizers we ordered and asked us to order replacements, on him. (Hold that thought.) The replacement appetizers arrived. Our beef carpaccio had almost no flavor, except for the drizzle of sauce on top. We ordered our main courses, sides, and another round of drinks. The food showed up, but not the drinks. After asking several waiters, several times, my second Manhattan was delivered. It was warm (probably from sitting on the bar, waiting to be picked up for half an hour) and nowhere near as tasty as the first one. (You can let go of the first thought.) Back to the food... My Boneless Ribeye was boneless and also flavorless, except for the salt they had sprinkled on. The whipped potatoes were OK. The Jumbo Asparagus was asparagus and anything but jumbo. When the check finally arrived, we had to send it back (probably should have done that with much of what had been brought to our table during the meal) because they wanted to charge us for the appetizers that the manager said were "on him." (OK, you can let go of the second thought now.) To me, it's never worth paying for bad food. Being expected to pay a premium for it makes it an even worse value. I ordered the shrimp cocktail along with the New Frontier bison New York strip, served with short rib and potato hash, red wine jus, and habanero mustard... and every single bite was perfection. Finally stopped by TRIO Grill in Fairfax and was impressed by the casual yet upscale ambiance + friendly and attentive service. The food was also outstanding. The tuna tartare nachos were scrumptious (still thinking about the wasabi guacamole), the bison NY strip was perfectly cooked, and our side order of fries was thicccccccc (yes that many c's). Our server surprised us with the chocolate hazelnut dome and every bite was super rich, chocolately and delicious. Great for a girl's night or dinner with parents. They also surprised him with a mini birthday cake dessert lit with a candle - how special! Restaurants don't do these things anymore and that really showed a level of service needed. The chef heard my dad saying he didn't see bison on the menu and debating if he should forfeit his "no red meat until next week diet". The chef served my dad's fish he ordered with a side of the bison hash and it made such an impression! I ordered the bison as a first time try and enjoyed it. Oh! And loved the flavors in the butter served with the bread! Seemed to have mustard seed and honey or some spice. Very nice. They both ordered the fish and found it tasty. Great food and great service! I came to Trio Grill on a Friday night and it did not disappoint! My fiancé and I came here to celebrate an anniversary, and the staff were so nice. They wrote a card for us and gave us two glasses of champagne on the house. All of the servers and hosts were so attentive and checked in on us frequently to make sure we were enjoying our meal. We also didn't have to wait too long for our food after ordering. We got the calamari, seafood cioppino, scallops, and crème brûlée. The calamari was lightly crispy and had a good amount of seasoning. My fiancé ordered the scallops, which were nicely cooked and perfectly seasoned. I got the seafood cioppino, which was a pretty large portion of mussels, shrimp, and other seafood in a delicious broth. For dessert, we got crème brûlée which was delicious. The food and service were all a 10/10. If you're looking for your next spot to celebrate a special occasion or just go out for a nice meal, I'd definitely recommend Trio. read more

I would give the restaurant a 3.5/4. We came for a birthday celebration on a weeknight. They brought us out 2 pieces of bread for 3 people. Service was pretty slow honestly. We got a chopped salad which was delicious. The mains were also pretty good. I enjoyed the scallops in brown butter and Chilean sea bass but the short rib was incredibly dry. We tried to order the mousse dome as it gets good reviews but they didn't have any prepared. Overall, I thought the dinner was good but it didn't live up to my expectations for the price. read more

We were quickly greeted at the door by a friendly face and lead to our choice of seating. The restaurant is elegantly appointed, right down to the bathroom. The oldies R&B playlist enhanced my good mood. We were expecting more from the food and it missed the mark for me. The brunch menu was fine, but I'd had breakfast already. I would've liked more choices on the lunch section of the menu. We started with the shrimp appetizer. The tomato-laced broth was good. It came with points of toast that we dipped in the broth-- Yum! I'd asked for toast when I ordered my omelette, but we were told there is no bread service for lunch. Our server brought us more toast for the shrimp, though... so... I got the crab and spinach omelette. I was expecting an overstuffed (or at least stuffed) omelette for the price I paid. I'm glad I asked for the hollandaise sauce on the side-- it wasn't my favorite. It was served with a small salad. My sister came specifically for the Chilean Seabass. It was good, but we've had it cheaper and better tasting at a chain restaurant. The star of the show was the wagyu burger served with an egg and long, thick slices of bacon. My niece said it was good. If you come for brunch, order something with the bacon-- you won't be disappointed. Service was slow-- we waited about 45 minutes for a burger, a couple eggs, and a small piece of fish. They only had one server for the entire dining room at around 2pm on a Sunday, but they had only a few patrons. By the time our food came, there was more staff. This was my first time here. We went here for early Valentine's Day and it was a great experience. There was limited parking in the parking lot but valet is also available. Our table was ready a bit before reservation which was nice and they were able to accommodate our booth preference. We had Soy Glazed Pork Belly, Soy Glazed Chilean Sea Bass, and New Frontier Bison New York Strip and complimentary bread. Pork Belly- 11/10 likely the best we've had. It was so crispy on the outside but tender on the inside with a perfectly seasoned sauce on a bed of seaweed salad and scallions. Chilean Sea Bass-9/10 very fresh and had a crispy thin outer layer, the citrus with spinach bed was nice but there were a couple pieces of citrus that looked like onions and was very sour. Perhaps just citrus juice in the puree of citrus garnish would be better. Bison NY strip- cooked very well on a bed of potatoes, steak bits, peppers, corn. I wish the mustard had a more sweetness to it and not as tart Bread- I typically don't comment on the free bread but this one was particular good and their mustard seed butter was a great pairing Atmosphere was very nice, suitable for business dinner or romantic date. If I were to describe the service, it would be: polite, attentive, and welcoming. Our server did a wonderful job waiting our table and was very much informative for the questions we asked and he made sure that we had everything we needed. The ambiance was as one would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. It was dim, quiet, and cozy. The food - from the appetizers, to the main course, all the way to desert exceeded our expectations. I am always looking to try good French onion soup whenever I see it on a menu and Trio's did not disappoint. It was sweet, caramelized onions, topped with gooey cheese and served piping hot. The calamari was good as well but nothing I haven't had at other nice restaurants. Moving on to the main course - I had the red wine braised short ribs and it was decadently fork tender and hearty. It was served over a bed of mashed potatoes with vegetables and all of the flavors were like a melodic symphony on my palette. My sister had the filet mignon medium rare. It was cooked to perfection and the Chianti sauce served over it was delicious. This was also served over a bed of mashed potatoes with grilled asparagus. For our sides we had the triple cheese macaroni and the trio fries. Of the two, the trio fries didn't really have a "wow" factor and tasted nearly the same as any other fries you'd get elsewhere, with the exception that these were a thick cut French fry style. The mac n cheese was pretty good by being gooey and cheesy, topped with breadcrumbs to add some texture. If anything, I think the mac n cheese could've used some salt. Other than that it was great. And lastly, the dessert. The chocolate mousse dome was absolutely decadent when paired with the vanilla ice cream which was velvety. The chocolate mousse was rich and the toppings of tuile and hazelnuts added a nice crunch component to the dish. All in all, our experience with service and food at Trio Grill was spectacular and we will definitely be returning to try something new on the menu. I would like to point out that we went on a slow day so we hope that when we return (if on a busy day), our experience with the service and the quality of the food are still at the exceptional level we experienced. read more

Place gets great ratings and recognition. Me: Only comments as a local is that I would wish they would change menus more often. Her: Likes the consistency and dependable quality. I don't know why it took me so long to review this place. I've been a few times now and have enjoyed every time. I think I was waiting until after I went with a larger party. Sometimes the service changes with more people. I've gone with one person, I've gone along, and finally I went with a group for Father's Day. The ambiance was classy and slightly dark and mysterious. I felt like I was going to meet someone I met on the Dark Web about a sketchy file. Everything is clean, art is fun but not overly busy, they have a cigar bar separate from the dining area, and they even play live music on certain days. It is a great place for special occasions and for a date. The party room made me forget I was dining with others. The food, ugh it's been a while but myself and those in our party tried things across the menu from: Mussels, Shrimp, NY Strip, Roasted Chicken, Braised Short Rib, Seared Tuna, Beef Carpaccio etc. Everything was delicious, I don't have any complaints. My relative tried Mussels for the first time and didn't care for them, so the server brought out different mussels with a better seasoning or something and the reception was much better. Our server was a slender fit, young black man. He was outstanding. I had him another time when we came for Father's Day and the wait was taking too long, so everyone started to get restless. Well this same server came out of the back with champagne for everyone, and upgraded us from a table to a private room without being asked. I haven't had that kind of service in a long time. I mean before anyone could truly get mad, he showed up with gifts and accommodations. I don't know if he is still there but if he is you'll know by the service you receive. Trio is excellent! I came here for a birthday dinner on a Saturday night. We had 6pm reservations and were seated promptly. The restaurant was busy and there was live music playing on the piano. Such a lovely ambience for a special occasion! Our server was friendly and attentive, which was very much appreciated. My girlfriends and I shared the shrimp appetizer, the brisket, the bison, and the special for the evening (which was a fish over lobster risotto). I highly recommend sharing a few dishes so you get to try a little bit of everything. I can't say enough about the food or my experience at this restaurant. 5 stars! I will say I think the scallops were slightly overpriced but they were absolutely delicious. We split French onion soup to start, I got the scallops and my partner got the pappardelle Bolognese. Her pasta paired beautifully with the $59 bottle of Pinot noir we got. Our server was excellent, personable and friendly. We also had who I presume was a manager pop by our table twice. We also had someone on water service. The place is low lit and has darker color scheme. Doesn't bother me, but isn't everyone's cup of tea. It feels more intimate I think because of the low light. Fantastic restaurant and bar! First of all the service is exceptional. I had one of the friendliest waiters I've ever met. I wish I could remember his name, but he gave such thoughtful recommendations and was a pleasure to talk to. I had the tuna tartare which was very tasty and then had the New York strip. I visited here for Mother's Day brunch. This place is typically not open for lunch except on Easter&Mother's Day. They offer two menus, Mother's Day Brunch & regular dinner menu. I tried Tuna Tartare, Seabass, Seafood Choppino, Scallops, and chocolate mousse dome. Overall, flavor is AMAZING like Michelin star restaurant that combination of multiple ingredients creates unique flavor. However all foods were a bit salty. I had to drink water in between every bites. I gave 4 stars for services because oh man... service was SUPER slow. It took forever for waiters to come to our table and get our main after the appetizer. We had to wave at waiters for almost everything we do because no one came by for 20mins for us to order. They also messed up Mocktail and included alcohol for my mom who was allergic to alcohol Aside from that, ambiance is really GREAT for special occasions and there are plenty of parking space by the restaurant. Food - 4.25 Service - 5 Ambiance-5 This is one of my favorite restaurants in the immediate NOVA area. Their prices have gone up over time, be ready to spend a lot if you go. I like their sesame seared tuna dish, it's a little bit on the salty side but really delicious. Tuna tartare is good, as is their fries, short rib, mussels, scallops, shrimp cocktail, etc. I haven't had anything I don't like to be honest. Most recently - I did think their gnocchi was a little too soft, I prefer it a little chewier with more bite. The ambiance is a little "old" feeling but very comfy and good lighting, great girls night and date spot. In warmer months we like the outdoor patio. For special events they have smaller separate spaces in the back inside and outside too. Parking can be a challenge only because it gets busy there but it's right next to the restaurant and they also have valet if needed. read more

There is additional parking offered in an adjacent lot after 5 but fortunately I didn't have to park in the alternative lot. I came here for a birthday dinner that was held in the private room. The private room is very nice and has artwork. We were able to utilize a portable speaker the restaurant had and play our own music as well. It created a nice ambiance. Antonio (I think that's right lol) was our primary server who was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The appetizers came out family style and I enjoyed the pork belly much more than I anticipated. The calamari was really good as well. I had a potato style soup that was really good as well. Others got the Caesar salad but wish they had tried the soup! For my main entree I had the salmon but honestly I was so full from eating the appetizer I couldn't finish it! The general manager Sam checked on our party several times and was really hospitable. Overall this a gem in Virginia I'm glad I found and will definitely be back! read more

I went to the restaurant last week for restaurant week with my daughter. She loves the wedge salad and it really was very good. I ordered the handmade gnocchi which came out burnt on top. The dish was tasty overall, but definitely, the gnocchi was not light and fluffy. She ordered salmon. The skin on the salmon was burnt. She doesn't eat the skin so didn't send it back. The salmon tasted fine. The scallops were okay, but they spaghetti squash they were served with was clearly the star of the dish. Dessert also was just okay. I have had better creme brulee at educational conferences. The service was good, attentive. I would not be pressed to go back anytime soon. read more

The calamari appetizer was standard, no complaints. My husband got the prime rib special, and he gave it 3/5. It was too chewy for me. My sister got the roasted free bird chicken, which lacked flavor. I got the red wine braised short rib, and it was probably the best out of the entrees. The meat was tender. I enjoyed the potato puree and vegetables. I think $47 is a bit steep for this one dish though. To be honest, the three cheese mac and cheese side might have been the dish we enjoyed the most. I wanted a quiet, nice meal and this place provided exactly that as I sat at the bar. The bartender was attentive yet also not overly imposing. Service overall was great! I ordered a drink that I thought I'd like, but just wasn't for me. I believe the manager came by to ask how I was doing and noted that unfortunately the drink wasn't my cup of tea and without hesitation, the bartender helped switch it out for something to my liking. Food wise - solid, but not necessarily going to blow your socks off. The highly touted nachos are good, but perhaps described in a way where you have higher expectations. The bison was something that intrigued me and was enjoyed with the hash. Ideally I would give this a 4.5, not quite the 5.
