The cheese filling in some items has an unexpectedly refined flavor. The bread pudding is my favorite, moist and eggy with plump raisins and a dark caramelized crust. Pan Lourdes is strictly no-frills. Along with basic coffee, you'll find the Hispanic classics, plus a couple of doughnuts. You have to ask for bread, which they keep out back. That being said, don't be surprised if the person assisting you knows little or no English. The pastries are all behind glass cases, and things didn't look disturbed from day-to-day, which gives me the impression they aren't removed overnight, but I am making a broad generalization (thus, my assumption should be taken with a grain of salt). The pastries are of great quality, though. They are flaky, light, and tasty. I was surprised, since it's a huge departure from the sugary, syrupy concoctions offered in most malls, airports, and coffee shops. The real star here is the price, though. Two pastries (one a pineapple empanada, the other a large equivalent to an eclair or canoli) cost less than $3 with tax. If I ever happen upon this neighborhood, I definitely know where I will satiate my morning sweet tooth craving.
