I'm in the DC area for my birthday and I needed something with flavor and heart; Dodah's Kitchen delivered both. I went to the Mount Rainier location and ordered the drum plate with mac and cheese and collard greens; and I'm not exaggerating when I say this might be the best vegan soul food in the area. The drums were crispy with a one of one batter; I have never tasted anything like that before. Crunch on the outside, seasoned through, not greasy, just right. The mac and cheese redefined vegan; creamy, flavorful, and comforting without trying to imitate anything. It stood on its own. The collard greens took me straight back home; tender, seasoned properly, and full of soul. I also tried the ribs; and they were so good they honestly do not even need promotion. Food was amazing but the lady behind the counter clearly needed more help, she was alone in taking the orders and making the food. While I ate there with a friend, several people came in and stole stuff- we tried to tell the lady but she was too busy. Aggressive panhandlers also came in looking for food at first (which we gave them, and apparently they didn't like vegetables), and then asked for money, and we don't carry cash. But again food was great, but next time I'm going to take out. Such a shame because the window gives you such a nice view of the neighborhood. read more

Good--let's start at the top and work our way down... Get the FRIED FISH. That's my whole review...I tried the ribs, the fish, mac and cheese, seafood mac and cheese, potato salad and garlic kale. And they were all worthy of a mention. But the "FISH" was nothing short of EPIC. It was made fresh (the rest was pre-made and sitting on display). It was hot, flavorful and had a nice little CRUNCH to it. If and when I rerun, I will get just the FISH and maybe the candied yams. I made the mistake of eating in the restaurant...I could not enjoy my meal for that incessant BEEPING of the Fire alarm. I mean, get a ladder, get up there replace the battery already! Looking for a quick vegan meal? Doodah's is the spot for you! I ordered an entree with two sides which included the cauliflower chicken candied yams, and old bay fries. I immediately dove into the cauliflower chicken, the best item from my meal. I was super surprised that it actually tasted like General Tso's chicken. The candied yams, unfortunately were mashed sweet potatoes with zero seasoning, definitely NOT candied. Old Bay fries were a hit, crispy and full of flavor! As a sweet treat I ordered the strawberry cheese cake, it tasted less like cheese cake and more like a lemon bar with a gelatin texture--not my favorite, but it kept my taste buds intrigued for sure. The ginger lemonade was mostly ginger with the color of lemonade, so be ready for a big kick if you choose to add this to your meal. The main con I noted was the limited menu offerings, other than the cauliflower chicken, the only other "meat" option was short ribs. Yup, they were out of nearly everything else (every other meat and all sandwiches), which was super disappointing. The food is often hit or miss and I've been going pretty consistently for over 2 years. Sometimes the Mac and cheese can be a little sour. The greens or string beans salty--so it's best to try a sample before ordering. You cannot sample the Lasagna, but that is typically fine. They do not make the drummies to order so they are often not very crispy. The general Tso cauliflower is good ONLY when it is fresh from the fryer. It easily falls apart and becomes mushy when it's been sitting too long in the hot tray. It's small and intimate so not always the best space to dine in. The service is also hit or miss. Over the past years I have seen many changes in staff and understaffing. Many times newer hires are not aware of all the foods available. I think this is perfect for To Go orders. read more

Just dry vegan meat and dry vegan ricotta. I had to put slices of Violife vegan cheese in between the dry pasta sheets and reheat it to make it edible. Never again. The plan originally was to order to go.. but after we had a few taste tests.... boy we sat there and ate. The place isn't that big either. To the food: General t'so had really good flavor, & the cauliflower was cooked perfectly. Sweet kale was good too! The ribs reminded me of a smoky meatloaf flavor, they were good too! As a vegan, I was thrilled to visit an all-vegan restaurant for the first time and decided to try Dodah's. The food was served quickly after I placed my order, which was a plus. The cafeteria-style setup means the food is on display and not made fresh to order. The mac n cheese was good and reminded me of NuVegan's version, but if you're not vegan, don't expect it to taste like traditional mac n cheese. They use a homemade cheese sauce rather than store-bought vegan cheese. The General Tso cauliflower was decent, though a bit too sweet and could have been crispier. The green beans were my least favorite and could have used more seasoning. The cookies n cream cheesecake was just okay--not something I'd get again. I decided to give Dodah's another chance and ordered through Uber Eats the next day, hoping to enjoy their mac n cheese again. Unfortunately, this time the mac n cheese tasted off, and I couldn't finish it. The General Tso cauliflower was even sweeter than before, as if they had dumped an entire bag of sugar into the sauce. Ordered through GrubHub for a friend. My friend enjoyed the meal, however the restaurant messed up the order and there wasn't a way to easily get it fixed. I ordered from Dodah's Kitchen because I've been trying various Vegan restaurants in DC. This place is a bit out of the way, so delivery does take a while. However, the food is very good. I got the meaty lasagna, which tasted like a standard lasagna. The crab cakes - although they admittedly looked a bit weird in terms of color - tasted excellent and just how I would expect crab cakes to taste. The potato salad was nice and sweet and creamy. I also got the Mac and cheese since they were having a buy-one-get-one free deal. The Mac and cheese tasted very nice and rich, though I wouldn't really say it tasted like cheese (and it wasn't creamy or anything). Nevertheless, the food here is pretty good, but I doubt I will be ordering from here anytime soon just because of how far away it is and how long delivery takes. read more

The venue is quaint located in one of Maryland's smallest cities, Mount Rainier. There's paid street parking available. The service can sometimes be slow (they may be understaffed) but the servers are always pleasant. There are roughly 3 tables that seat about 4ppl for dine in. I love dodahs normally but recently i visited the district heights location in which no one spoke any english and could barely understand the patrons so i stood there being a translator then i visited my normal location in mt rainer and the same was happening. No one speaks english. I am not angry just a little bugged out that i didnt further my Spanish so i can order get my rewards and do as i normally do at dodahs. One of my best good friends let me I know about Dodah's Kitchen. She is a pescatarian and knows that I'm a meatarian who likes good food. Okay first things first DK is located on the corner of the street, bright white. So happy that someone else took a picture of the outside or I would have ridden right past it. Parking is on the street and is metered. The interior is quaint with a small seating area; although I believe this is closed because of the 'vid. Food is cafeteria style on warmers. They also have a refrigerated case with juices and their desserts. They have a nice selections of cakes and cheesecakes, etc. They have lots of options IMHO, for sandwiches, entrees and sides. They even have brunch items all day. I got an entree with two sides a piece of cornbread and because I wanted this to be a well rounded review (ha) a piece of sweet potato cake. Don't y'all love it that I took one for the team? Well rounded indeed! The sides were deliciously seasoned. If you're not a fan of garlic, I'd stay away from the kale, but I thought it was perfect and super fresh. I have no idea what the drummies are and was taken aback by the stick (because duh drumstick) but they were good too. You have a choice of dipping sauce if you like, but I don't think it needed them. The cornbread is about $2 extra with an entree. Can't say it tasted really like cornbread, but more of a sweet bread. I could probably do without that. The sweet potato cake was awesome, not too sweet and had just the right amount of sweet potato. I was really surprised at how good it was because I have had bad experiences with vegan desserts. The portions of everything were huge, I was able to get a couple of meals out of this. The staff was friendly, changed his gloves in between guests (yes!) and was helpful. I've purchased Dodah's cake slices and cupcakes at local groceries for a few years. The new, retail brick and mortar presence in Mount Rainer, MD is a logical expansion of the business. My ambivalence with vegan cake recipes is that they result in a dry outcome; the absence of butter is a loss when it comes to moisture and taste overall. Dodah does a good job of addressing this with both her chocolate cake and key lime cupcake. At the Mount Rainer spot, there are numerous hot and cold prepared vegan foods available for eat-in or take-out. The one side dish that gets my "thumbs-up" is the seafood mac & cheese. It's got seaweed in it and this ingredient does a nice job of flavoring it as if there were fish in the casserole. I could eat that every day. The Mount Rainer space has an interesting history. Located on the city's major roundabout, the triangular structure was home to a long-time thrift store, then to the recent, short-lived Bird Kitchen & Cocktails Restaurant. The selections that I got were delicious, so no complaints there. My issue is that they don't seal the bag when you order through door dash or another delivery service. This is a big safety flaw. We live in a world where people, unfortunately, don't do the right thing and can tamper with someone's food. Fix this. It's easy. Get a stapler if you don't have fancy stickers to seal the bag. I called the restaurants and asked them to seal my bag, and they simply said, NO! We don't do that. Such a big disappointment. read more

Inside, there are a few tables and chairs and a buffet of good vegan soul food like dairy-free mac and cheese. Located right at the corner of a busy circle, we got ourselves another treasure! It took a while for us to figure out what we wanted. I initially wanted the quinoa sausage, but it's been out for a while, so I decided to go with General Tso's Cauliflower. BEST DECISION EVER!!! I got seafood mac (which was mad heavy for a side) and carrot tuna. The Cauliflower had so much flavor and if not for the fact it was fried, I'd eat it everyday! The seafood mac had mad Old Bay vibes, and I'm not quite sure it had chunks of 'seafood meat' or if it was just the spice that made it seafoody... but regardless it was tasty! The carrot tuna is more liquidy and veggie-like than I'm used to... I usually get a bunch of sweet flavors, but I tasted the peppers in this one. Not bad, just different! And of the 3 things, I think it was my least favorite. Despite that, it was some REALLY great food and I cannot wait to return to try other things, including their ALL DAY BRUNCH! Absolutely love this spot, a relatively new addition to Mt. Rainier. Great place for a quick service lunch. There's a hot bar when you walk in where you give your order, and some entrees are made to order depending on what you want. We've been twice during a busy lunch hour and the service was quick, about 10-15 minutes from start to finish and we ordered to items that were made fresh by the kitchen. Plus the service is friendly and attentive. Love love love the mac and cheese, the collard greens are great and not too salty, and don't miss the philly steak. I usually don't like a super sweet breakfast but this was perfect. The syrup, the waffles, and those chick'n tenders hit the spot for sure!!! Literally one bite of Dodah's Kitchen's vegan spinach lasagna had me racing to my computer to look at their full menu and wondering how I can order more. It's that good y'all! I am vegetable deficient and vegan adverse (butter + cheese is my middle name) but after taking a stroll of my local health food store, I noticed Dodah's Kitchen items in the prepared food aisle. It looked good enough to try, so I went with the spinach lasagna and brought it home. Spoiler alert -- it is delicious! Who knew that tofu and soy cheese could be so good?
