So delicious we had to come back twice in our trip. All the flavors were made by them but everything was delicious. The lychee dream was my favorite with chunks of lychee in it. I love ice cream, and for the longest time, I was convinced that nothing would ever out-do Lappert's for best ice cream on the island. In discovering Tropical Dreams, I was a little hesitant as to what I should expect from a small shop inside a strip mall next to Safeway, but in tasting their ice cream, I know now that Lappert's has some serious competition. In trying their Chocolate Coconut Macademia Nut ice cream, it'd be the perfect way to describe Kauai in one bite. My family also got around to trying their Butter Pecan and Blueberry Cheesecake scoops and it was all just so heavenly...and dreamy. Gets 1 star because I couldn't give it a zero. Owner was more interested in forcing you to believe his product was good that he took forever to serve it. Customer before us asked for a sample. "A banana tastes like a banana. A coconut tastes like a coconut." They didn't get to find out if his banana or coconut ice cream tasted like either. I guess you're an idiot if you'd like to try before you buy. The ice cream is all covered so you can't judge you're choice by taste or appearance. The owner was so busy bragging about how he was about to open a store somewhere else and how great his ice cream was that he took forever scooping. Next customer said something about shave ice. "Shave Ice is just sugar water." My ice cream is gluten free lactose free all natural blah blah. Really? Your product can't sell without having to bash something that Hawaii dessert industry is known for? Instead of walking out (my first & second impulse), we tried it. Started to get the sales pitch. "All ingredients are grown locally." Paid & escaped. Expensive, dull ice cream. No flavor. And in a my opinion, premium ice cream should melt out in the outdoors. Ours didn't. Lastly, while we were finishing, a truck pulled up and started unloading cartons of ingredients clearly labeled some kind of 'cream' and 'PRODUCT OF CANADA'. Chuckle. That said it all. Embarrassing story: We came, ordered our ice cream, accepted our ice cream, and didn't have cash/check to pay (they only take cash/check). The manager was one of the two employees serving the ice cream and had a very Hawaii-laid back attitude of "no problem, enjoy your ice cream and take care of the money later." I couldn't really enjoy the ice cream because it was our last stop before we left the island and now had 2 hours to figure out how to get her $10 with nothing but credit cards... my wife actually ended up in tears because these situations can stress her out to no end. We ended up setting up a bill-pay check to be sent to her via USAA's app (I showed her) but WOW I couldn't believe how nice the manager was and understanding... she was going to let us just go without paying but I insisted on sending the money via check. The ice cream was good, but it was unfortunately overshadowed by the looming stress of making $10 appear out of thin air. I had macadamia nut and chocolate. They make their own ice cream, of course, so I can appreciate the quality. I highly recommend trying this place out if your are coming through the lovely Kapaa! read more

We sampled so many great flavors...macadamia nut, ube (a lightly sweetened purple sweet potato ice cream), pineapple coconut and the lychee/strawberry sorbet. I came about 3 times over my 8 days in Kauai and although, yes the owner Dan is one chatty character, he means well. One time I got extremely annoyed as it was already 8 pm and I was waiting for ice cream and he kept telling two guys in front of me different places to go hiking...and here I was...waiting to get ice cream and get out. The ice cream is unbelievable, lots of selections and oh so creamy! They used to be in Kilauea, so the new location is closer to the concentration of hotels, condos and population. It's very easy to find and lost of parking. The store a few doors down from Starbucks. The reason for the 3-star rating is the proprietor, who is a variation of the "soup nazi" from Seinfeld. He will not serve children until the adult gets their order (in fear of them spilling their creamy goodness on the floor) and he seems to be reluctant to give you a sample taste of the flavor that you are considering. He is willing to tell you his opinion of how the flavors taste instead, which does nothing for me as I prefer to experience flavor for myself so that I can determine if I want to eat a whole portion or three (if I'm feeling it). read more

We went in because we heard they had dole whip, but I guess it wasn't available that week we were in town. I know this because I went in every day to ask and the owner kept saying he didn't have it. The lychee cream is the best ice cream I've ever had, hands down. It is solely the reason I give the place 5 stars. The owner is extremely talkative, but kind of freaks out if you ask for a sample of something. It's pretty obnoxious. Of course we want to sample the ice cream, that's what you do at an ice cream shop before you buy! Since we went in there every day that week, we heard the same stories over and over again...so maybe it wouldn't have been obnoxious if we only went once. I took one of my friends one day, and she said she couldn't go back because it was too stressful! Great vegan options! Finding vegan ice cream can be hard sometimes! The owner here is very very chatty, but friendly and helpful. He told us about his Dole Whip machine that cost him $42,000 (yikes) but turns some sort of dairy free powder (contains some soy) into a fluffy whipped soft serve. We got vanilla pineapple twist and it was really great! I liked the vanilla a little bit better, but both were good. It was nice to have some vegan soft serve, that's usually pretty rare to find even on the mainland. They also have some passionfruit sorbet, mango-lychee sorbet (sounds delicious) and tons of dairy ice creams to choose from. A plus, this place is always open. There were a bunch of unusual flavored, which I heard repeatedly, that were made with only fresh ingredients that were sourced from Hawaii. I asked to sample a few and he almost seemed hesitant as if he would rather describe the flavored to me instead of letting me try it and deciding on my own. In the end I got a pretty hefty scoop of premium ice cream. You know, the kind that you can feel the texture of the butterfat. It flavor was good and the portion was also great. Four solid stars. Great ice cream, I was not use to pay $8 for two scoops of ice cream but i t is Hawaii and it was all home made. I had the Summer Berry Cream and the Mango Cream. The summer berry was delicious but the Mango Cream was just ten times amazing than the berry. This place had long lines but it moved quickly and the ladies who served were polite and thanked us for waiting. Dan's a character and the reviewers who warn you about asking for too many samples are probably right. So two pieces of advice from a certified family of TD Junkies: 1.) BE NICE! What a concept, huh? Ask him what the heck a Poha Berry is. Or better, get a sample of something that isn't a mainland flavor and then... order it! Advice 2.) EVERYTHING ON THAT MENU IS OUT OF THIS WORLD GOOD, and the more exotic, probably the better. Ginger Cream is sinful. Mango Lychee is like nothing else you can get on the mainland. And the aforementioned Poha Berry is impossible to describe. Think Nectarine and Cherry, but tropical, super creamy... and then remember that the fruit is related to a tomato and has no business being in ice cream, let alone tasting that divine. Dan's got a complicated business for an ice cream store, he has to order it a week in advance, they ship it by barge from the Big Island, and he has to treat it with great care because it melts wicked fast. He can be paranoid, late to work and an all-out East Coast character smack in the middle of Kaua'i. For some reason, that makes me love the guy all the more. read more

This ice cream was a bit pricey but worth every penny! I really enjoyed that they had an assortment of flavors I've never seen before: purple sweet potato, matcha green tea, thai iced tea. I ended up getting 1 scoop of thai ice tea and 1 scoop of cherry chocolate chip. Both were delicious! My husband got the pineapple coconut and pineapple guava sherbet. The sherbert was too tart for him but he really enjoyed the pineapple coconut. The people running the place were really nice. Definitely recommend! Also it is one of the few ice cream places near there that was open late, just FYI! read more

It was totally meant to be for me to try the amazing, delicious ice cream before I left paradise. I was actually on a mission for some shave ice (never got any during my 9 days in Hawaii). Somehow I ended up in this big shopping center off the busy Kuhio Hwy and showed up right as Dan, the energetic and chatty owner, was setting up shop. He opened a bit later than usual yesterday so if we had showed up a little earlier, I would not have been seen him and left. I got to try 3 different flavors, fresh ginger, lychee, and banana macnut fudge. All three were seriously so good. It felt like I was actually eating lychee, banana, and ginger. Dan said one of the things that set him apart from other ice cream shops is that all his stuff are made with fresh ingredients and that he NEVER leaves his ice cream exposed in the freezer. He asked if he I would ever do that to ice cream in my own freezer and I realized that he had a solid point. Prices were really reasonable and portions were huge. My eyes lit up when he handed me my cone of awesomeness. My partner-in-crime usually hates it whenever I choose ginger ice cream bc he thinks it tastes gross, but this time, he actually asked me for second tries. I was reluctant since it was so good. I am so happy that I won't have to come allll the way back to Hawaii for Dan's ice cream because he is opening up a lot of chains in different parts of the mainland. He told me that within 90 days he will have a spot inside the Ferry Building in SF and in about 2 weeks he is opening up somewhere in San Diego. So stayed tuned! read more
