We had some time before we went to a luau. Our tour drops us off in the town and we walked to JoJo's shave ice. Oh dang! Their flavor combinations are the most refreshing I've ever had on this island. My favorite are the ones with macadamia nut ice cream. And lets talk about their syrups... they have more flavor in them than other shaved ice competitors! I would stick to the tropical fruit flavors, as they seem more refreshing on a hot humid day. I came here a few years ago when I visited Waimea. Today, after a long hike, I decided to make a pit stop for a well-deserved treat. I got the mango, Lilikoi, guava shave ice with li hing mui drizzle, which was amazing! I've had the powder, but never the drizzle. It was the perfect sour topping for a very sweet treat. I'm removing a star solely because the sign out front said they had 1/4 lb all beef hotdogs, but my boyfriend got a dog and it was tiny and sad. My mother-in-law recommended JoJo's to my husband and I, and I'm glad we were able to stop in. I really just like the shaved ice without any toppings or ice cream, so I just got blue raspberry, cherry, and coconut flavoring and it was so yummy. My husband tried the POG'd up. My husband asked what the li hung mui was the girl explained it's like chamoy but it's sour instead of spicy. He decided to try it and was glad he did. It added an interesting flavor. He really enjoyed his. Also they have a fridge with soda. I originally didn't see that they had Diet Coke, and when I mentioned that the girl was very nice to point out they do have it but it was just in the back of the fridge. Really great service. Wow there were a lot of different combinations of shaved ice. My wife and I were having a difficult time deciding which one to order. We ended up going with the North Shore, just because we hadn't seen the Melona flavor before. It was refreshing and I love how it all sort of melts together with the macadamia ice cream at the bottom. The haupia cream didn't have too strong of a coconut taste, which was good for my wife because she dislikes coconut. I will say that of the various shaved ice places we tried, JoJo's had the most artificial tasting bowl we tried. That's not necessarily a knock, especially since they do make their own syrups, but it is something we noticed. (For reference, we tried another shaved ice place immediately after JoJo's, which is why this stuck out so much). I learned that the Waimea location is the original location, with the original sign still in front of the store, which is a fun touch. read more

I highly recommend the Colada Special over the macadamia nut ice cream with the Haupia Cream on top. It's even better than having a Miami Vice. My wife and I are on vacation and took a drive around the island for some sight seeing. Along the way we stopped at this shave ice spot. It's a small place that packs a bunch of flavors. It was very refreshing and the staff are friendly. This is a happening spot as one for the staff member stated we got lucky it's not busy now 10 mins ago she had a line out the door. It was around 11am and she said that it's gets busy again around 2-3 pm. After having their shave ice o can see why. So many different flavors so little time. This little shaved ice spot has a quaint homey feel located in a small town of Hanapepe, which just happens to be the hometown of Lilo and Stitch. It was too small for tables and chairs inside but they had 2 side benches and a side tent with chairs that customers can chill out of the rain (it does rain a lot there) and have their desserts. I love how the menu is also posted outside in case we had to wait in line for a bit, we shall already know what to order. The small sized shaved ice is good for 2 to share which we did. Yum! 3.5 stars. Might have been higher if I got a fruit flavor combo since they make their own syrups. Some unique flavor combos at Jojo's. If I were a visitor not from Hawaii I would get one of the fruit flavor combos. But since I'm an Oahu visitor I got the #5 Jojo's Special of chocolate and butterscotch syrup with vanilla ice cream, topped with vanilla cream and chocolate drizzle. It was different and pretty good! I enjoyed it. Ice is not as fine as it could be but it's not coarse so it's "ok." Since it's served in a paper bowl and you are outside, eat fast. Also only put the paper straw in at the end to slurp up the yummy liquified goodness because the straw will get soggy otherwise. There's quite a bit of street parking but if it's really busy you may have trouble finding a spot. We were lucky because it was just before noon. My experience with most shave ice places is it gets crowded right after noon. read more
