I decided I was going to buy my very first dinning room table from Tropical Salvage. I was drawn to them because they are local business and make beautiful furniture. Tim, the owner, worked with me to order a table with specific dimensions to accommodate my needs. I was extremely excited. He claimed the table would arrive within 3 months. The table didn't come in. Apparently, there was a mistake on the shipment order. I was completely understanding (probably a little too understanding). He told me another 40 days. I tried calling to see where my table was (2 more months had passed) and left a message. A women who works there left me a message claiming they were too busy for me and that I needed to wait until they called me. They never called. I heard they are selling to Costco now, maybe that is the reason they forgot about me. read more

Pretty cool business actually and a very interesting idea. In its simplest form: the company salvages wood from Indonesia and other SE Asian countries. The wood comes from scrap sources (land slides, old homes, etc.) so they are chopping down a living forest. The furniture is constructed there by the locals, shipped here and sold. Pretty simple business model that is green and helps people. I went in looking for a desk recently and like what I saw. The've got a pretty big warehouse to explore that is packed with different types of pieces (almost anything for your home). The pieces are a little spendy comparable to other stores, but I suppose that's the cost of being green. Some of the pieces are really cool, and according to the staff there some of the wood has been carbon dated and is really old. Staff are polite and helpful. They only have one small delivery truck it looks like so when I asked about delivery I was told it was another $80 or so and was arranged with a third party. That was a downer for me but certainly not their fault that I own a small car. I had to pass on the desk I was looking because of the delivery fee *but* will definitely come back and look for other pieces. read more

My wife and I have purchased three items from this business over the past 5 years. EVERY SINGLE PIECE HAS HAD SPLITTING AND FINISH PROBLEMS!!! The most recent piece, a table which cost us just under $500 is separating at the seam. We called and no one returned our call. We went in and the owner acted surprised, however other friends of ours who have also purchased pieces from this place have experienced similar problems. Now just to make sure we explain the other side, we did return one piece and the owner took it in. Apparently they filled it with an ugly dark fill of epoxy (he said) that doesn't match the wood color. We weren't asked about a color choice and in the process the entire finish was removed and an uneven and much less smooth finish was returned to us. The wood is beautiful, the concept for using salvaged wood is cool however, the products, customer service and what we paid for all of the hassles make it a place we go out of our way to NOT recommend. Sorry! We WANT to like the place, but we didn't get an honest deal or good workmanship so we aren't going back and we will tell others to not go. KR - Portland read more

I bought a beautiful dresser from one of the shops they contract with in Seattle. It had a finish smell I was told would go away after awhile. When it didn't I contacted TS directly. They were great at first by coming to get it, saying they could make it smell less and better. Unfortunately they returned it with different drawers that don't fit and it still smelled. I tried call but they just stonewalled saying there was nothing else they could do for me and that I should contact a handyman to fix the drawers. NEVER BUYING FROM THEM AGAIN. read more

About 10 years ago, I purchased all my household furniture from Tropical Salvage (except my sofa, since they don't sell upholstered furniture). I can't say enough good things about this purchase. Things just aren't made to last anymore! You might spend more money on a piece here, but it's real wood, not that fake Ikea stuff, and will last 100 years if you treat it right. This is also the most environmentally friendly, green furniture in all of Portland - they don't cut trees down and the furniture will last 50-100 years. Talk about sustainability! Forget about FSC-certified wood, that's for wood that is still being cut down. I just orange oiled my furniture for the first time in 10 years and it all looks Gorgeous and Brand New again, even 10 years later! That is insane...especially in a modern world where your iphone won't last more than 2 years before breaking. So happy I bought from here. read more

Cool and Funky Furniture store located at the end of NW 23rd district. Awesome looking furniture made with salvaged wood from Indonesia. According to Tim, the showroom shares area with their event space and warehouse so the showroom can look a little rough at times depending on the activity of the other spaces. Will be back when I have more time to explore. They also have a excellent social mission that they are working on in Indonesia. Took a bunch of pics that I will post later. read more

Sorry! I WANT to like Tropical Salvage, the setting is cool (actually freezing if you go in the winter - seriously! Take a jacket), the sales people nice, but hardly anything was priced and while I was there I heard two different prices quoted from two different people working there (I think one was the owner). My issue is that after purchasing three different pieces, all three have split within a few months of my getting them home. When I called they asked me if I had it in the sun, WHAT??? Yes, I guess I did, it was near a window... Does that mean it shouldn't be in daylight? Many of the pieces are beautiful, quite a few unique or odd designs, but ultimately not completely durable or reliable. I have a table which is not only splitting, but also twisted and no longer even close to being level. Sort of takes the fun out of cool furniture. I can't recommend the place. read more

I ordered a dresser from these guys 5 months ago (9/16) from a re-saler. Unfortunately, that shop has now gone out of business but the owner was very good in making sure I had all the contact information I would need to make sure I still got my piece, even though they were out of the equation now. Well ... I have contacted Tropical Salvage 4 times now, phone and e-mail, and they won't call me back to just give me an expected delivery date. That's right, they won't even call me back!! After 5 months of having my money. WHO does business this way?! I've been very cordial and very patient in my messages but I'm thinking I might have to get some legal advice on what to do. They're furniture is beautiful, I love the business concept and what they're trying to do, but they are EXTREMELY unprofessional. read more

Went there yesterday to look at furniture. The warehouse is very cluttered and is very difficult to see what they have.You have to dig through stuff, and most of the furniture is covered in cardboard. The woman working there was a bit unfriendly and didn't seem to want to help us. Also, she couldn't answer basic questions about the furniture. Maybe they are just too busy to help customers. However, when tables start at $800, it seems that they would be a bit more friendly and helpful. We may have to spend our money elsewhere. read more

We bought our first piece of furniture, a 3-foot square table, for our living room from Tropical Salvage about 10 years ago. The top is a single slab of wood from a tree once buried in the volcanic earth of Indonesia. Each corner has a beautifully carved head. The age and mineral activity surrounding the wood when it was in the earth has produced astonishing variations in the grain patterns and colors. There simply is nothing like it anywhere else. Tropical Salvage uses only salvaged wood - no trees are cut down to produce their furniture. One has to wonder when walking through a place like the Joinery how much wood was cut and rejected as not good enough before the remaining picture perfect pieces were selected to make their picture perfect furniture. We have since bought 9 more pieces over the years from Tropical Salvage, each with unique carvings and beautiful wood grain. They also made a vanity for our bathroom remodel. We have developed not only a business relationship with the owner, Tim, but a friendship also. He started in a small space in southeast Portland, but has since moved to a much larger warehouse in the northwest business district. If you love wood, it is just a great pleasure to go there and look at truly exotic, beautiful wood - some of it buried for centuries, much of it now extinct--and be helped by nice people who know about their woods and are committed to protecting the Indonesian environment and providing living wages to their Indonesian craftspeople. read more
