I called a week in advance to make sure my wife and I could get a taxi the morning of our cruise. I was assured I didn't need a reservation, just had to call the morning of. Tropical Taxi service in Galveston seemed like a decent business, based on some of the reviews. Unfortunately, the service we were provided both ways to the Festival of Lights at Moody Gardens was awful. The first driver picked us up and proceeded to drive us all the way from Tremont house to the Sea Wall area, which was completely packed with people. He obviously wanted a bigger fare, ripping us off by taking us as as out of the way as possible to our destination. In addition, he was talking on the phone practically the whole time on personal business with his bank. Super unprofessional. Once we were done at the festival, we were very apprehensive to call for a return taxi since we already had a terrible experience with the first one. However, because of the horrible decision by the city of Galveston to not allow Uber or Lyft, we were stuck with a horrible company with terrible service yet again. The new driver to our surprise only accepted cash (we had already waiting over 30 minutes in the freezing cold for this taxi). The dispatcher should've asked us about our pay preference. Another fail. Fortunately, I had one last $20 bill in my wallet. Unfortunately, the smell inside the cab was nearly unbearable. It smelled like stale old food and body odor. We were nearly gagging the whole time on the drive back to our hotel. Stay away from this horrible company and their terrible service. But not sure if anyone has much of a choice until the city of Galveston rethinks their ridiculous decision to let Uber and Lyft into this city. read more

My wife and I spent the night in Galveston while waiting to board a cruise. When we were ready to leave the hotel I asked the manager to call us a cab to the pier. The company's phone was busy so I checked Yelp and found Tropical Taxi had good ratings. I called them on my cellphone while the manager was still trying to get through to the hotel's favorite taxi service. I was connected immediately and had a taxi on the way in a short time. The driver was very familiar with the pier area and took us to the best spot for us to enter the terminal quickly. I would call Tropical Taxi anytime I am in Galveston again and would recommend them to anyone needing a ride in Galveston. read more

My partner and I were coming out of the ER at around 2:30am-3:00am and asked the front desk lady if they could call us a cab and it took 20 minutes (not bad) to get to us. The guy seemed very out of it when he got there. He didn't open the door for us, he swerved the entire drive to my home, went 30 mph the entire time, even checked his phone for some reason that wasn't even GPS related, and didn't even try to make conversation with us during the drive. I would have chosen another taxi if I had that option. read more

I recently stayed at pointe west resort which is at the far end of the island and could not get Uber or Lyft tried couple of taxi companies but the despatch lady was great took my details called me back 10 mins later to tell driver on the way. The driver was friendly took me to the auto repair shop told me that as I was normally a flat fee being so far out but as he couldn't get that confirmed he charged me the meter rate which was very reasonable . I arrived safely. I called at 506 am. They arrived 40 min later after multiple phone calls to check on where the driver was located. He said his gps didn't work but never asked for my help. Then the driver asks me what the $ was for the ride. When I didn't know he said we will use the meter. Then I find out its cash only. read more

My son and I walked up to the taxi que at the Galveston port December 15th, after returning from a Royal Caribbean cruise, and the first cab in que was a Tropical Taxi. Lucky for us. Even though I already knew the standard fare to the Mall of the Mainland in Texas City, I asked anyway to see if the driver would try to gouge us. Our driver, John, quoted us exactly what I had been told when I called ahead. Cab was clean and in good condition. John was an excellent driver, and deposited us safely at the rental car counter at the mall. Next time we cruise out of Galveston, we'll probably call ahead for John. Don't know if we could get as lucky again just walking up to the taxi line. Thanks again John! read more

We have now used this cab service on three occasions while on vacation. The cabs are extremely dirty and it is hit or miss with the drivers. We had one that was extremely friendly and two that were extremely rude. Unfortunately, cab service in Galveston is non existent at most times. Until the city allows Uber or Lyft in the area there are limited options. My advice...rent a car. read more

Worst cab ride ever. The cab was extremely dirty, reeked of smoke. The front door was broken and the back door wouldn't open from the inside. The only reason they got 2 stars was that the driver was fairly nice, although she was a crazy driver. Also, 18 dollars for a 3.8 mile ride, give me a break. Galveston, allow Uber back. I miss clean, safe rides with drivers who don't scare me with their driving. I've heard they are the best on the Island. What a sad state of affairs for cabs in the area. read more

We called to leave from our hotel to the cruise port. Very promt answering the phone. We called earily and they told us to call back within 30 mins of when we needed to leave. On time and very clean! Would definitely use again! read more

My husband and I hired Tropical Taxi for transportation to the Lone Star Rally this past weekend....first of all the driver couldn't seem to comprehend over the phone as to where we were....after 4 calls he finally arrived. The moment we got into the car I noticed his eyes were very droopy...he then began texting/messing with his phone....I told him I would appreciate him putting his phone down or pulling over if he needed to use it. Before we even got off our street I knew he wasn't sober. I asked him what he was on and he responded "nothing".....I told him he better crawl to our destination for I was concerned about our safety but just as concerned about all the bikers. We arrived at the Strand and he couldn't get the doors to unlock. Finally, we exited the vehicle! We take Uber alot! I have never been more afraid for our safety and the safety of others on the road! I reported to the owner without any response! We received a ride home from a different company, I told the driver about our experience and he knew right off who I was talking about and said this individual has had issues with herion and other narcotics! I used tropical taxi to try and help a local business. This was a huge mistake. They were prompt in pick up to their credit. After that however, this is a cash only operation, that does not have gps. Dispatch can not find local addresses. I explained the route, which was argued by the driver, and I am assuming to drive the price up. This drive was 3x what Uber charged only an hour earlier. The meter was running and I was quoted a price higher as a flat rate fee. The driver did apologize and honor the rated fee after a few minutes. I am a very dissatisfied customer. I recommend using Uber, yellow cab, or walking as an alternative to this so called business. read more

Came to Galveston this past Weekend and need a Cab for My Family of 5. When I called Tropical. Taxi a man answered and said it would. Bo about 10 minutes for a Cab, We waited about 18 minutes before the Cab came to the Hilton. The driver was a tall white male and we asked to be taken to the Pleasure pier and oh my god, this driver smelled so bad that we asked for him to roll down the windows, He said that only the 2 front went down. We were so happy to get out of this HUGE van that's smelled like the driver Mike hadn't shower in days or weeks. We call Yellow Cab Bach to the Hilton, and what nice clean vans they have. This cab business is CASH ONLY. The employees there will fail to mention that to you. I spoke to a "supposed" manager who failed to mention this to me. This "manager" also told to call back after 6 pm to schedule a cab at 2 am to get to my 6 am flight. This employee guaranteed me a cab as long as I called back after 6 pm. However, when I called back I was greeted with a different, also incredibly rude and condescending, employee who said that is when all the bars get out and that he could not guarantee me a cab. If you NEED a cab to be ready to pick you up, I would not recommend this cab service. Extremely disappointed, especially after reading such positive reviews. read more
