Was exploring the area for a new lunch spot. Passed by Tropicale and liked the vibe. The outdoor patio was festive and bright on a gloomy day, so I stopped in and checked out the menu. The staff member at the bar where you order was friendly and helpful with suggestions. Went with the happy hour "2 tacos and a beer" deal. Took my order number to a table, along with a Victoria Cerveza. Chosen solely for its beautiful label, it was light and refreshing. Not long later two colorful chicken tacos arrived with a side of a deliciously smokey sauce. These were great tacos! While I don't love the lack of option to sit indoors, I can see how this would be appealing in the summertime! They have a small but intentional menu of food and drinks. Unfortunately no drinks for us during lunch on a workday but my friend did mention coming here for drinks before and being impressed. You order inside and they bring food out to you. I got the octopus and the NA pina colada while my friend got the tacos. We shared a chips and salsa plate. The flavor was fantastic for all items. The service was nice, they brought the food out to us and we cleared our tables. The restaurant has open door seating which was nice for the warmer weather we're having. There are also other restaurants next door (our other friends liked their food from Friendship kitchen - Vietnamese, rollin fresh - sushi, and the pie spot) and nearby so it makes it easy to have everyone try something they enjoy. Given the good reviews, I decided to order takeout from here. Unfortunately, this wasn't a good experience. I purchased an order of chips and guacamole. I also got the Los Maduros Con Carne. First I was given the smallest amount of guacamole I've ever seen for an order of chips with guac. It isn't as if I ordered a side of guac but the actual appetizer. The guac was also just off. Had an odd taste, no spice or even a hint of salt. The chips were really good so that's one plus. I've had Maduros Con Carne (and similar items) before. This was by far the worst I've ever had. The plantains were barely fried and were extremely slimy. The cochinita was super dry and again had little flavor. Though there was a lot of it. They put a dollop of salsa that was alright. I wish there was more of it to bring some moisture to the thing. Maybe this is a one off. Or perhaps it's not the place to get delivery from. read more

We planned to stop in just to get drinks on the way to a show at Alberta Street pub but ended up getting some food as well. This place is awesome and we decided it's definitely worth a second visit. The drinks were great. I really wish that I got the pina colada because that was the absolute star of the show. From our antojitos order, I loved the smoky ranchera salsa while my husband loved the guacamole. We shared the pulpo; it was great- cooked to perfection, and there was a really nice, chewy flavorful chorizo that it was served with. If we had more time we would have ordered more. We definitely plan to be back. Note that the area is not very large, so you may have to wait for a table after ordering. This is not the type of place you hang out after you eat because of that. Stopped in for some late lunch tacos. The line wasn't too long and the service was pretty quick. I really enjoy the walk up bar vibe and their little covered patio area is quite nice. We did not have to wait for a seat which was for sure a plus. I got pork tacos and they were fantastic. I won't lie $10 for 2 tacos feels a little steep to me but oh well. I also got a virgin pina colada, I got the 16oz and it was amazing. I guess you have to get the largest size for it to come in an actual pineapple but mine was still very cute and yummy. Of course, we were all snackish so we had some chips/salsa/guacamole as well as some tostones. My friends all grabbed some tacos but being vegetarian, my option was arepas or maduros. I went with the arepas which were good, but not great. They were filling and the plate was huuuge but they could have definitely benefited from some seasoning, even a little more salt? They just needed some little zap of flavor -- which I achieved by using the dipping sauce the tostones came with. Parking is street parking and can get quite tough so plan accordingly! It seemed like everyone was having their cocktails in the table area, so we decided to place an order too! We got three mocktails, a Pina Colada, a Whole Piña and a chef's creation. We ordered mocktails since each of us coulnd not have alcohol for different health reasons. Out of the 3, our favorite was the Whole Piña. It was fun to receive a drink in a pineapple shell, and the refreshing pineapple slushy was what summer is all about: it's delicious, not overly sweet and full of pineapple flavor. If you have tried all the drinks on the menu, you can always ask the chef to bust out a custom drink for you as well. The custom drink that we received had an orange/mango flavor, and it came in a dainty cocktail glass with a slice of orange. Found this lovely little Mexican-flavored hideaway on my way to see a band at the Laurelthirst pub down the street. Really nice happy hour, with a tacos n beer combo special for under $15 the night we went. My chicken adobado tacos were excellent, with a nice portion size, pickled red onions and a killer salsa that had a nice heat yet not overpowering. So good with my Pacifico. Super casual, picnic table-heavy setup - the only seats are outside under one of those wood and clear plastic roof type pergolas - but that's pleasant enough on a warm summer night. But that's also why I took a star off. This is kind of a glorified food cart in a sense; go inside and order at the counter (behind which is a kitchen) and a genial server will bring it out to you on the patio. It works great in good weather and there are two other food businesses that share the patio space so you have options too. Caveat: I haven't eaten much food here -- yet. We have a new bar in our repertoire! The outdoor heated space is super cozy and cute, they've really done a nice job boxing it in but leaving open air for circulation. I was warm enough without my jacket, both times I went, which is so rare on heated patios. The drinks are GREAT -- I've tried both the alcoholic and alcohol-free version of piña colada (omg), the hibiscus toddy, the champurado, and the Oaxacan old fashioned. I was so excited to see they had champurado on the seasonal menu! It was thick and delicious and warming on a pouring Sunday evening. I've had the chips, salsa, and guacamole (twice) -- super fresh chips, I love the pepitas on the guacamole, and one of the salsas was smokey and so tasty with the guac. I'm also a huge fan of their service system, where you order initially inside, but they give you a number with a QR code that links back to your table, so you don't have to get up again to get more drinks or food. The pina colada was alright, everything was very expensive and the portions were small. The pina is $17 and it tastes like pre mixed and barely any liquor. The presentation of the food is nice but the portions are too spendy and too small. Trying to be upscale but having us sit on sticky broken wood tables outside. My experience was just okay. Tropicale is a fun spot to especially meet friends to. Their drink selection caught my eye as I'm a huge tequila and rum drinker. I got the The Whole Pina $17, which is a whole pineapple filled with pina colada. As well as, the spicy mango $11 which has habanero mango. I also got the La Torta Ranchera $13, I unfortunately didn't like this which I'm really sad because I love torta's. I wasn't to keen with the bread and the sauce that was paired with.
